I have not had thumbs up in well over a decade. Around college time this was the spot. Then the service and food fell off, and I found out with my own two eyes they were not using/cracking real eggs. They were using premade liquid box eggs for omelettes etc. I don't like that. They use to have these huge thick pecan pancakes that were really good, and one day I didn't like it. Thumbs up is a great, no-frills, breakfast spot in the city. It's consistently good. I guess that's why it's always packed. No big expectation for perfection but very clean. There was a large party... maybe 10 people that were super loud. Thankfully they were on their way out so we only had to listen to them for about 15 minutes. Whew! The omelette was great. I love that I could order turkey bacon. It many places offer that. The food was really good, definitely surpassed my expectations. As far as the menu there is so much to choose from but you can't go wrong. Our waitress was very nice and sweet. They don't accept cards, only cash which really isn't a big deal. The wait was about 30-40min. We did go on a Saturday around lunch time. When you walk in you have to sign in on an iPad then they will text you when your table is ready. You have 3 MINUTES from the time they text you to show up. I love that you can get sides of pancakes or waffles for cheap and the portions are huge (sorry, forgot to take pics of these but they're all over other Yelper reviews). The catfish portion is pretty big and seasoned well. I love hot sauce so I added some to mine (they have Tabasco and Texas Pete as options). I flew down to Georgia for a graduation ceremony and the graduate requested to dine at this restaurant and I can happily say I left satisfied. Our waitress was nice, friendly, and attentive. I have to get better at notating names so I can include them in my review. Our party of 7 sat at a booth and neighboring table around 1:40pm on a Thursday. Our food came out in a timely fashion and hot which I appreciated. I ordered the spicy chicken sausage grits and the Kav's omelette with a cup of hot green tea. I enjoyed the thickness and consistency of the grits and loved the blend of the spicy sausages and peppers. The omelette was topped with pico de gallo which added a nice touch. The prices are fantastic especially for the large portion sizes. I would come back to this restaurant if I am closer to a location. Staying in Kennesaw, this was a bit of a journey to get here which I will say was a second choice given the wait time at the first choice was over an hour wait. You don't find out until you get the bill. Seems to me, they should tell you there are no substitutions without an additional charge. I ordered grilled pork chops plate. Huge portions come hungry and come with cash. Only cash accepted. Parking can be tricky, learned side lot is for their parking, street parking is also okay. This is a tiny spot. Check-in when you arrive, or join the wait list if available. Don't plan on just grabbing seats at the counter, you have to ask the host. No seating unless your whole party is present too. Once we got the ground rules handled, you were able to snag two seats at the counter. As we were on road trip home mode, we were hoping for a bit quicker service at the counter. Well, this is the south, so being patient and courteous are required. Once our server Gwen came over, she was a nice as can be and was kind to stick that seeming hot cup of coffee under my nose. That made a huge impact on my kindness meter for sure! The coffee is strong and hot. The other folks, mostly if not all were locals and as nice as can be. This place is jammed packed with folks waiting too. Orders are made to order, so be patient. And when the food came out the portions were huge, hot and delicious. The bonus of sitting at the counter was to observe not only the wait staff manage the numerous to-go orders but to watch the cooks prepare the food. There are three back there that we could see and it was like watching a symphony. Where one begins the next picks up and moves the food out to the waiting area. There are quite a few menu options so really come hungry. The only thing I didn't love were my lumpy, dry chucks of spud potatoes. The spuds include onions and green peppers. Discriminatory Behavior and Poor Service I had an extremely disappointing experience at this restaurant. I came in to order takeout for a hungry, needing person and was shocked when the server, Shane, refused to let me do so once he learned who the food was for. I politely asked for a reason, but he was incredibly unkind and dismissive, refusing to offer a reasonable explanation. His behavior was not only discriminatory but also completely unacceptable. Additionally, Shane was very slow at the counter, taking nearly 10 minutes to check out a simple sandwich and fries order. I remained respectful throughout the interaction, yet he showed zero professionalism or courtesy in return. He didn't even hand me the food, just putting it on the table and went off. As an international student at Georgia State, I find this experience ridiculous and deeply concerning, both socially and personally. It's frustrating to see such poor service, and I believe the server does not deserve the service fee included on the food price and mandatory 20% tips in specific situation (more than 5 people, etc) for his neglect and lack of basic respect for customers. I am not saying restaurant itself or other employees are evil. I just want to say that if someone else see this comment, don't give service or tips for a person who don't deserve it. read more

This has become my go-to spot for that good ole' hometown southern breakfast. Let me add that we have been to several different ones but we always come back to this one, even commuting from Roswell just to get here. I'm almost certain it's because of the warm and attentive welcome you get when walking in the door even when there is a wait, or the interior of the restaurant that gives that - at home feel or it could be the politeness of the staff especially Ms. Kav that makes you feel extra special even through the hustle and bustle of getting guests in, fed and out!! Or it could be the enormous portion of food you're served that might I add, tastes sooo delicious and is seasoned oh so well, hey and this is coming from someone who isn't a foodie and who is a borderline vegan (oh yes, did I mention that they have those options?!) Anyhow, if none of that blows you away, it will definitely be the price! We have toured as I mentioned many restaurants were we have paid a considerable amount only to walk away still feeling hungry and sometimes wanting to give our hundred brunch leftovers to the homeless because the taste just wasn't there and the portions were so small that in the end we only truly end up paying for the ambiance. BUT HERE, IT'S THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE and we would gladly PAY WHATEVER because although they don't have the fancy tufted seating, vines spewing from the ceiling, or whimsical archways they still roll the red carpet out for you through their service, food and the pricing. Ok, our last meal on our way home. We started off going somewhere else and the wait was ridiculous. I went on Yelp searching for restaurants with a wait time and BOOM! We arrived about 10 minutes before our time and within 5 minutes, we were seated. We sat at the counter and Kav took our order and assisted us in an excellent service manner. We watched how the cops were preparing everyone's dishes so fast and precise. I can tell they take pride in what they do because I saw stuff that others would just pass off but if they messed up, they would start all over. We had the chicken biscuits with sausage gravy, over easy eggs, cheese grits and the low country heap. The low country heap was a skillet filled with potatoes, cheese, spicy sausage, shrimp and seasoned with peppers and onions. This was a great melody of flavor. The chicken and biscuits were two fried breasts on top of some of the best biscuits then a fresh sausage gravy just engulfed the whole plate. They make everything in house. Even the jelly!!!!
