However comparing this meal to our first time we can see the staff made significant improvements to the quality of food. It was already good and now its better! Tigawok is a cafeteria style Chinese restaurant offering mini-bowls. Think of it as an upscale Panda Express with robot-assisted cooking to help control the quality of food. The bowls are environmental friendly and to go bags here are super fancy. Their condiment station includes radishes and chili sauces. Bowl pricings range from about $4 to $7 and items switch from week to week. Some of my favorite ones were the zesty shredded chicken ($6) and orange peel chicken ($5). I can handle spicy dishes but found their kung pao chicken ($6) to be a bit too spicy. The hunan spicy beef ($7) was way above my threshold. Another really good veggie dish was the garlic eggplant and green beans ($4). Overall I was impressed with the cleanliness, service and a few of the items. My daughter wanted something quick and small before heading to a school musical performance, Tigawok came out as one of the options on route. We arrived around 5:45pm and thought the place seemed empty. Well, I spoke too soon. Right when we picked out our dishes and paid, there was a fleet of people lining up to come in. The indoor tables were quickly filling up. Like me, a lot of the people were first time customers and fascinated by what they have to offer. A lot of people asked for samples. We were a little pressed for time so just went with what we thought looked good. We were going to get the rice but seeing the chow mein was a decent portion we decided not to get the rice. We picked kung pao chicken and pepper kurobuta pork. Both dishes were super spicy but very flavorful! I especially enjoyed the fresh peanuts in the kung pao chicken. I really wanted to love this place more, but I'd give it a 3.5 if I'm being honest. Here's what we got: Taiga Wagi curry - very good with the rice. Orange chicken - okay, hit the spot. Hunan Spicy beef - the beef was fine but the entire dish was almost inedible because it was 60% chilis, 20% celery and the rest beef. Chow mein didn't taste like anything & I wish the veggie/cabbage had been cooked more. Good value, variety and fast service. Parking was horrendous because that lot is a hot mess at no fault of the restaurant! Just be prepared to wait for a spot during peak hours and weekends. **Update - I am moving my rating to four stars because Tigawok acknowledged my concerns and I'm glad that they took the time to read my review and will look into those concerns I pointed out. For that, I think that this place deserves more credit. After having tried Tigawok for the very first time through a Yelp Elite perk and loving it, I decided to revisit this past weekend. This time around, I was pretty frustrated with my experience. I think their 2 to 3 item bowls are a newer thing because I don't see any photos of that here on Yelp and don't remember that being a thing the last time I was here. It is super confusing when you order the bowl instead of just picking your base and sides and paying for them individually. There were so many "exceptions" and pricing differences when ordering the bowl. They charge extra for "premium" items if you order it in the bowl. The problem is, they have a million different type of pricing for every side, so depending on which side you pick, it's a different premium price. The type of base you choose to go with the bowl is also a different upcharge. I was pretty frustrated because it was confusing and it really seemed like the bowl wasn't a good "deal" that they made it out to be. After all that explanation, the fried rice that we were willing to pay an upcharge for was sold out and we had to wait. I lost it at this point and just wanted to hurry through and get out. The food is tasty. I ordered all the same things I did the first time I was here with one new side dish I didn't try before - Hunan Spicy Beef ($7.99). This thing was expensive for how much it was filled with chilis instead of beef and celery. Also, unless you are eating the chili directly, I did not find this dish to be spicy. You're better off with the Spicy Basil Chicken ($5.99). At the end, where you get your drinks, lids, etc., it's a mess. Sauces and liquids are all over the counter. There was no place to set my tray down without getting wet and dirty. I wanted to give this place four stars, but the more I think about how confusing their pricing is and how frustrated I was, I decided to lower my rating. I'm so glad Tigawok finally opened in Orange County, and I was excited to try it. They have two other locations in LA. They serve authentic Chinese and Asian cuisine, cooked by robot woks. It was a little confusing for me when I walked in... and reminded me of a cafeteria style line. You go in, pick up a tray to your right, then select mini bowls of food. There are several bases to choose from: rice, chow mein, etc. I got the rice and chow mein. For main mini bowls, I picked the ORANGE PEEL CHICKEN, Tiga cola chicken, Kung pao beef, and stir-fried garlic eggplant/green beans. The workers place all your selected items on the tray, and then you go to the cashier at the end to pay. There are about 4-5 tables to sit at. The place is modern and casual, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Most mini bowls are priced at $3-7, which is very affordable. The food was fresh and tasty also. My favorites were the rice base with orange peel chicken. It was nice and crispy, with a hint of tang. The Tiga cola chicken tasted like teriyaki chicken. However, I found it to be a little too sweet. The kung pao beef was super spicy and in the dry side. The garlic eggplant/ green beans were good, although they were extremely oily, which made the green beans soggy. Everything about the concept is cute. It was efficient. I went with my kids when it wasn't that busy. Note: You start right away when you enter the storefront, and read the paper on the tray for the directions. On my first visit there, I thought I was supposed to walk all the way into the store to get in the line, but it's not like that. Again, you get your tray and start right away once you enter the eatery. The taste of the food was not my favorite which is why I scored it a 3. The dishes were on the sweeter side. They were on the oilier side, and the chow mein noodles were on the harder side. Yikes. Something about the seasoning they use was not my favorite, but I'm sure many people love it. Ingredients go in, and after a quick spin cycle, a tray of food heads to the counter. Every dish is reasonably priced around $3-7. While the lines look long, they efficiently keep things moving. If they run out of an item, you're handed a beeper. Then, it's a 5-10 minute wait it's ready for pickup. Pepper Kurobuta Pork: This is their best dish. The thin slices of pork belly are rich and flavorful. Shishito peppers are crisp and delicately seasoned with a tasty black bean sauce. Hunan Spicy Beef: If you enjoy heat, this is the dish for you. The sliced beef is tender enough. There are a lot of fiery peppers in this mini bowl. They won't burn your tongue off, but they pack a mighty punch and they're almost citrusy. Wagyu Mapo Tofu: The mapo tofu could use more flavor in its sauce and probably more spice. The wagyu is crumbled and added as a topping. It's good, but you wouldn't know it's wagyu. First time trying Tigawok in Irvine. Went there for lunch around 12:30 and was a little nervous seeing a pretty big line. When I got into the store the line was actually not that bad. It's just really cramped in there so it looked like it. For foodI got the steamed rice, mapo tofu, Tiger Cola Chicken, and the Orange chicken. People say this is the premium Panda Express and they're right. - Steamed rice is great. - Mapo tofu was delicious. Not too spicy and didn't have much numbing spice which was nice for me. - Tiger Cola Chicken was alright. Didn't taste much cola. It was a little sweet but no strong flavors. - Orange chicken was very crispy and fresh. Had a hint of orange flavor. Shout out to the workers. They were struggling to keep up with in person orders and online orders. The one negative I'll say is we were waiting in line and wanted to try to Chow Mien but they were out. Had to check out the hype. I've never been able to make it to their original Sawtelle location. The new spot runs like a well-oiled machine. My order came out right on time, and the whole operation feels efficient. I'm still firmly in the Panda Express camp for the best orange chicken. This version isn't bad, but it doesn't come close for me. I also got the beef and minced pork rice bowl was genuinely really good. The braised sauce mixed into the rice was a homerun. Have been waiting to try this new Chinese take out spot. Quick tip avoid peak hours. I dropped by a little after 1:30pm so the crowd had died down. The set up is pretty simple. Grab a tray and just get in line and tell the server what u want and he or she will get u a bowl. I opted for a mix of Chow mein (decent not too greasy), mapo tofu (next time I will do without the beef on top) it looks spicy but it isn't, orange chicken gotta try it (still like panda and PF Changs and Siam Station more) and of course the eggs and tomato (a bit too chunky for me). Server was nice enough to let me sample the cola chicken which was basically teriyaki chicken. After u pay u can eat there or pop on the lids and put it in one of their nice to go bags. All in with tip and tax it was just under $20. Which I think nowadays is pretty reasonable. I was only able to eat about a 1/3-1/2 of everything so the rest was dinner. If you're looking for something quick and affordable, then you found the right place. I've seen many posts and reviews about Tigawok of other locations, and now they've made their presence in Irvine. Upon entering, you grab a tray and follow the line to order your food. Each of the dishes range from 4 to 6 dollars, with rice being about three dollars. You also have the choice of ordering fried noodles instead if you are looking for carbs. There's a variety of choices, but mostly when you would expect from a Chinese restaurant, including compile chicken, orange peel chicken, mopo tofu, tomato, egg, and more. In terms of quality, it's not bad, however, you get what you pay for if you're looking for comparison to panda express, this seems more affordable, but in terms of taste, and I might be slightly ahead of tigawok, just ever so slightly. The tomato egg was solid. So was the mopo tofu. I've been here twice now and the white rice, if you're looking to supplement your meal with carbohydrates, is a hit or miss, sometimes too hard and undercooked. Sitting in first come first serve, and although there are about 10 or so tables, it is pretty limited inside. However, you can also eat at the tables outside the restaurant. At $5 a scoop, the servings in my last visit was shockingly skimpy, The containers for both the orange chicken and eggplant were barely half-full. I would have ordered the pepper Kurobata pork, but it was swimming in a sea of oil. I enjoyed the flavor of the dry pot brussels sprouts, except that I would bite into some of the sprouts and have oil shoot out of it. So much for trying to be healthy! The garlic eggplant and green beans were way overcooked, and the green beans were mushy. Maybe those robot cooks need a bit more refining. The containers are nice touch, but I'm guessing that most of them are winding up as landfill, as opposed to being reused. The peppery pork is super tender and full of umami flavors that goes well with white rice and the spicy peppers are nicely spicy! Braised minced pork: my daughter's favorite-- they use good quality pork and it has good ratio of fat to lean meat. It's savory, melt in your mouth, and definitely a comfort food. Cold shredded chicken: this dish is so refreshing and tasty. Love the symphony of flavors of this dish-- has a little lemony, sweet with savory, with fresh crunchy vegetables. It's a good dish to wake up the palette. The menu is really confusing but the line moves fast and the food is better than Panda Express. It looks like a cafeteria for Chinese food, where you choose which items to get. 3 entrees, but only those specific three, can be made into a combo, which comes with side rice (or upgrade) and side vegetables and drink. One of those is the Mapo tofu (another is orange peel chicken and then I think sesame chicken). The mapo tofu is a solid is solid, can opt for ground beef on top. It's slightly spicy, rich in umami, variable texture from the beef and tofu, and can always be topped with pickled radish and chili sauce. The side vegetable is broccoli and carrots in garlic sauce, served cold and was quite tasty. Possible to upgrade side rice to lomien noodles or wagyu pork belly rice. The pork belly rice is very robust umami, worth getting. The pork belly can be fatty, but does provide flavor and there is some sauce that will cover about half of the rice in the bowl. Drink options are Pepsi products and either unsweetened oolong tea or sweetened black tea. We were allowed to sample the Cola Chicken and selected that over the Orange Peel Chicken. The orange peel is fried while the Cola chicken is closer to a teriyaki, grilled and then covered with a thin sauce based on Coca Cola soda. It was not as sticky as a teriyaki although it might pass as one, and I didn't taste and soda to it (I don't drink Coca Cola often anyway). read more

The restaurant is sandwiched between Starbucks and Omomo Tea Shoppe at the corner of Culver and Walnut in a shopping center anchored by a Trader Joe's. Parking is limited and may be hard to come by, especially during peak hours. There is almost always a wait outside of Omomo, and you can expect one outside Tigawok too. Seating is also limited inside the restaurant, but additional tables can be found outside. The Tigawok menu is fairly basic but when you see the dishes served in front of you, it's hard not to want to try everything. If you're dining in, Tigawok recommends the following 4-step process: 1 - Take your tray 2 - Choose a staple 3 - Choose your mini bowls 4 - Pay for your order Between our family of three, we ordered the Braised Pork & Wagyu Beef Rice Bowl and Chow Mein as our staples. Our mini bowls included the Steamed Soup Dumplings, Wagyu Mapo Tofu, Hunan Spicy Beef, Potato Shreds with Bean Sprouts, and Pepper Kurobuta Pork. This is a new concept place next to Omomo tea shop. It is set up like a cafeteria, you pick the dish, they scoop into an individual container that is made of plastic. You take the four or five container on a tray to your table and eat. You can also take everything to go. The staff is friendly, and the place is very clean. The prices are reasonable with each dish costing around five dollars. I would have given the restaurant four or five stars if not for one huge issue I have with the concept of this place. I want to support new businesses and watch them succeed, and I want to be fair and kind to new owners. However, there is a problem here with the design of this restaurant. It could be fixed very easily. It is not about how they cook the food, or the taste of the food, or the quality of the food. The problem I see is with the environment. This place creates a huge amount of waste that goes into landfills. Each item is packed in its own plastic container, which is thrown away when you are done. I've been seeing some great reviews so finally decided to come check it out. I came here on a Wednesday lunch and the place was still packed with people! The concept is similar to Panda Express where you pick a base and choose your entrée. They come in mini bowls which gives you the flexibility of trying different items. I got the orange chicken peel combo which comes with the rice (set measurement for each rice bowl), the bowl of chicken, the chilled garlic broccoli, and a drink. I also got a side of tiga cola chicken to try. I was very pleasantly surprised that the food was actually quite tasty! The orange chicken had a nice crunch and tender chicken. The tiga cola chicken tasted like braised chicken, no special taste. Not too greasy and flavors weren't too overpowering! The downside is the food wasn't that hot, and was more on the warm side. I wish the food was hotter as it'll make them tastier and enjoyable. As I sat there, I was able to see the food being quickly replenished. I don't eat pork, and they didn't have many beef options. All the beef was also unfortunately not being sold the day I went, so I was only left with the chicken options. This place is so good! Since they opened, I've already visited twice, once for takeout and once for dine-in. The prices are super reasonable, especially for the Irvine area. We spent about $34.40 for two bases (rice and chow mein) and five mini-bowl items -- plenty of food for two people! I really love their concept, you get to try multiple dishes in one meal instead of having to commit to just one entree. Every mini bowl we tried was flavorful and satisfying, and the chow mein was excellent too. On top of that, the food tastes authentic, like true Chinese home-style dishes done right. Only complaint I have about this location specifically is that the trays in the "clean" pile didn't seem very clean to me. My daughter sent me an Instagram ad for this Tigawok so I got really curious. Stopped by today to pick up some foods. The line was very long, which is expected for any new restaurant or business. Eggplant & green beans: green beans are good and not extremely salty but eggplant is super salty, Brussels sprouts with bell peppers: good. Mapo tofu: very oily and salty, Hunan beef: very spicy. Chow mein: okay, like any other chow mein. Pork buns: meh. Quite honestly, I was disappointed as I had high hopes for this place. We came on a weeknight around 6pm and it was pretty busy, but we were able to snag one of the few tables available inside. This was my first time trying this concept, so I'll admit I was a little flustered while in line choosing my sides. They had fake versions of each mini bowl on display, but I kept looking at the actual dishes in the serving containers (sorry to the server for my confusion)! Despite the food being precooked, everything tasted super fresh and flavorful. I highly recommend the sweet tomato & egg. It was perfectly mixed, with soft, gooey scrambled egg and a delicious sweet tomato flavor. The Hunan beef was bold and spicy, and both the eggplant and green beans were excellent as well. Their plain white rice is dispensed by a machine according to weight. The only downside is that the food is quite oily, but overall it was really tasty and I love that you can sample a variety of different dishes in one meal. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy authentic, flavorful Chinese food. read more

Basically ordered everything on their menu for takeout to eat with three people. It was easy to order online and the food comes packaged in nice containers and bags. Service was quick and efficient, and the store seems new and clean. Taste wise, it tastes very authentic and may appeal to those who enjoy authentic chinese cuisine. I particularly liked the orange chicken, fried rice, and pork belly. The spicy beef and thai chicken are really spicy so if you can't handle spice i do not recommend getting it. The mapo tofu was a bit bland. The green beans and eggplant were too fragrantly seasoned for my taste. Overall it was nice to try but not sure if I would visit again. read more

Saturday dinner, not too busy and the line goes fairly quick. Ordering process is fairly straight forward like going through any Chinese take out places. You start with noodle or rice and then pick various entrees. Decided to try a little bit of everything, nothing stood out but all were decent. The flavors are certainly more authentic than panda but some dishes were heavily sauced. I like the concept but I don't know if there was anything worth going back for. Tigawok has a cool concept of having robots helping to cook the food! This is my second time back, the first time was during their first week of soft opening for their mini bowl coupon. At that time when I went around early dinner time, they didn't have like 2 things but I got two mini bowls, the wagyu mapo tofu and the tiga cola chicken. Both were really good, I forgot to take pictures at that time when I took it home so that probably shows how good it was haha. The mapo tofu was actually quite spicy in a good way and you can't go wrong with it. The tiga cola chicken was unique, never expected that coca cola would be incorporated somehow, but I actually really liked it as it had a slight sweetness to it and the chicken was tender and soft. Anyway, back to today, as I was in the area for lunch around 12pm, I was able to walk in with no wait. They also had everything available, which was good to see! There were two main staff members, one at the first area and the second at the second station. The second staff member offered and asked if I wanted to sample anything, which I appreciate the gesture. The ordering process was quick and efficient. There is not a lot of tables though, so if it gets busy, the tables will get filled pretty quickly, but it's not too bad since many people get it as takeout and there is outside seating shared with other restaurants. This time, I got the wagyu and kurobuta pork rice bowl as my base, and for the mini bowls, orange peel chicken (since I wanted to try this last time but they didn't have it), and the tigawok pork bun. Also got a drink from their third week of soft opening special deal, which I got the honey scented black tea (refreshing and just the right amount of sweetness). I can see why the wagyu and kurobuta pork rice bowl is popular, it's very flavorful and was both savory and slightly sweet in the sauce so it paired well with the rice. People may say it's too fatty, but honestly I think it was fine. The orange peel chicken was good too, not too sweet thankfully. But for chicken, I'd rather get the tiga cola one. The pork bun was just alright for me, honestly adding some of the sizzling wagyu spicy sauce from the self-service area saved it but I probably wouldn't order again personally. Overall, very affordable and authentic food! The bowls may look small, but I think it's pretty generous and you can order multiple things if you want to try different dishes. I also think it's nice that they come in containers that are reusable and they have a self-grab area (must get that marinated radish!) Personally, I think just getting a base dish plus two mini bowls is plenty enough for me. Most importantly, I like how affordable they are, making it perfect for college students or families. Mapo tofu was the only thing that stayed warm. Was okay, they use that schescuan pepper. 5.8/10 probably wouldn't get this one again Green beans 7.5/10 valid, good if u want some veggies. Very oily tho. Overall love this place, solid spot for fast Asian food at amazing prices. Everything is super oily but hey lol. At least I don't have to do dishes??? Came on a Monday at 7. Line out the door, maybe waited 10m till ordering. They run out of food constantly it seems like but are making food constantly. Whoa amazing prices with big portions! I ordered a la carte chow mein, Brussels sprouts, and Wagyu mapo tofu and it only cost me $13! I loved the Brussels, very crisp and flavorful. Mapo tofu was bland however. Chow mein taste was good and chewy. Definitely coming back again. It's a great option for fast Chinese food. I stumbled by this place during its soft opening because a friend took me to O Mo Mo next door. It's only open from 5-9pm sun-Thurs for now and 11am to 9pm Fri and sat. Workers were very enthusiastic and happy to help especially if there were any questions. Of course it's soft opening and the line is out the door but only waited 15 min. There's several tables inside and outside so there's plenty of options. I also loved how the utensils, drinks, sauces, and to go containers are in the back and out of the way. It's been a while since I've been excited about a new place opening up, but somehow I was excited about Tigawok even though the food was just what most Chinese/Chinese-American grew up eating. It's the same but different in a good way? I went during the 1st week of their soft opening and they looked pretty much 100% up and running. The line was about 8 people outside the door with a full line inside, that took a bit over 20 minutes before I started ordering. Simply grab a tray, then tell them what you want as you go down the line, each dish is shown on the display above the food. The cool factor is that the rice is measured/weighed by a machine and dispensed into a bowl, and all the dishes are cooked using an automatic cooking machine that stirs/tosses whatever you put in there. Their rice bowl is larger than their dish bowls. It's a healthy amount even though I wish there was more for the price (because I'm a fatty). Essentially for a two item plus rice meal, you are looking at roughly $12-14 depending on the dishes you pick. Quantity is not box busting like HK Express, but it's a healthy amount and definitely better quality. Everything we got was delicious and filling for the three of us, plus I portioned out one bowl for my kid's school lunch for the next day. And it's great being be able to get a small portion of a dish instead of having to order several full family portion like at a traditional restaurant so you can order more options. While walking down the line I noticed the green beans and mushroom? Was running low and saw that the bottom of the metal tray was pure oil, there was like 1/4 inch pool of oil sitting there. I feel like they should add a draining grate under food like that so people are not consuming stuff soaked in oil when it gets to the bottom. It's cool that all the bowls are square so they fit better on the tray, all the dishes are plastic, microwaveable and reusable, you can get lids at the end of the line after you pay. I love that design of the lids, because of how the holes are made, let chance for saucy things to make a mess when sloshing around while driving. read more

Love to find places that serve gluten free dishes and this one is one of those winners! It's hard for me to find any gluten free chinese food and especially orange chicken! Need to do gf due to my allergy/intolerance. You know who you are -- orange chicken or sesame chicken lovers. So when I find a place that does gluten free orange chicken, I'd jump on it and try that place out. I happened to be around orange county that day and needed to find a place to eat - was craving chinese food so I did some yelping around :) Surprise to find Tigawok and went there to try their food. They clearly note their allergen on every dish. So happy to see that orange chicken is gluten free. So here are what I tried: - hunan spicy beef (the staff warned me that it's really spicy). I do eat spicy so I went ahead and tried it. They were not kidding, it's flavorful and really spicy. - orange chicken. it still has that crispness and not overwhelmingly sweet. I'd get 2 bowls of this for myself - mapo tofu. This is really good, like authentic chinese mapo tofu - I opted for white rice for the base but ordered this as separate bowl. - later on, we bought extra of a plate with 2 items and tried eggplant string bean and another orange chicken :) Love their concept. People can try some dishes with the mini bowls if they're not sure. The lids are available in the utensils area (Irvine loc) if you didn't finish the bowl and wanted to bring home. The to go bag also is provided and it's insulated with velcro closure. Definitely going back and have more orange chicken and other items. Loving it ! read more

Finally got to try out this place. It's a quick Chinese takeout spot that's affordable. I ordered online for pick up but if you go in, it seems there were some other items and combos I didn't see online? Each dish is about 5-6$ and a side is like $2-3. The chowmein is flavorful and definitely much better than Panda Express. The orange chicken had great flavor though a little heavy on the batter. Kurobuta pork and pepper was actually quite spicy but I loved the flavor. The cola chicken I would skip next time. It was a sweet flavor but had so much oil. Also tried the wagyu beef and braised pork rice bowl. It had a decent traditional flavor but wasn't really worth it for me. There are also on the side pickled radish and a spicy chili paste. There were couple other dishes I want to come back and try! The workers' service and attitude really blew me away though. I had to wait a couple extra minutes because they were still making one of the items I ordered. Because of the wait they offered me a free drink. I also saw their kindness to a woman whose card didn't seem to be working either because she didn't activate it or something else. The worker was willing to pay for her meal out of their pocket and I just was touched but their kindness. The lady said she will be back to pay and they tried to say it's okay.
