Sichuan Impression serves some of the most authentic Sichuan cuisine in Los Angeles. I've visited this restaurant many times over the years, and one of my all-time favorites was the Bobo Chicken (钵钵鸡). Unfortunately, it is no longer on the menu. I really wish they would bring it back because it was one of the restaurant's signature dishes and a favorite among many customers. During this visit, I ordered the sliced pork and the jelly noodles. The sliced pork was incredibly tender, with a clean, fresh flavor that let the ingredients' quality shine. The jelly noodles were refreshing, spicy, and full of bold Sichuan flavors. The combination of heat, seasoning, and texture was simply delicious. The dessert was also surprisingly good. It reminded me of mochi, topped with puffed rice that added a pleasant crunch and contrast to the soft, chewy texture. It still had plenty of flavor without being overwhelming. One dish that kinda threw me off was the Couple's Sliced Beef. Since it's served cold, the texture of the beef felt a bit firmer and hard, and less tender than I personally prefer or expected. We went with a mild spice level, which was perfect for us, but if you're more sensitive to spice I'd recommend going one level lower. In a nutshell.. we went here looking for peppercorns and medicinal spice.. did we get it? No.. sadly everything was not as spicy and sichuan as we hoped it to be. The service was your typical Asian restaurant where they don't really look at you I. Its Good! Real good. Expensive but good. Tucked in an older strip mall in Tustin, lies, for the past ten years. There are few other locations popping up around SoCal, but this one is most proximal to me. They are famous for a few dishes but I'll highlight a few of my favorites. One unique aspect of their seasoning is the use málà (麻辣) or peppercorn. It can have a bit of a numbing sensation on the lips too! The Stir-Fried Lamb with Cumin 孜然羊肉, Onions and Scallions is super yum and the Ginseng Tea with Red Dates and Longan 红枣桂圆西洋参茶 is tasty, soothing and really has red dates and Longan inside. I've been to two locations and at both, service left much to be desired. Each time I go, after I order, you won't see your server again which is a bit of a shame in case you need something. Here's what I ordered for takeout: Boiled Fish with Rattan Pepper ($23.99), Tea Smoked Pork Rib ($27.99), A-Choy Taiwanese Lettuce with Garlic ($13.99), Tender Bamboo Shoots in Chili Sauce ($9.99), Mini Lamb Skewer ($22.99), and Intestine Noodle of Shuangliu ($12.99). Every dish was flavorful and delicious. The Tea Smoked Pork Rib was a bit pricey for what it is, but it was still tasty and I'm glad I tried it. Everything was packed very well, and ordering over the phone saves you some money compared to ordering online through their website. When I arrived, the people who helped me with my order were friendly and efficient. Overall, the prices here are comparable to or slightly less than my usual Sichuan place. There are definitely things this place does very well, and they offer unique dishes that I'd come back for. I ordered 5 dishes, that being the Cucumber, cold noodle, stir-fried chicken, fish soup, and the taro rice dessert. The dishes are so flavorful and are definitely made to be shared family style. With these dishes, we even had leftovers to take home! The cold cucumber appetizer is a lightly pickled and salted cucumber that blends well if you wanted a pallet cleanser or just a refreshing bite. I ordered it since it was a popular dish on YELP and I would say order it and let it speak for itself! The stir-fried chicken and soup were a great combination as you can double up on protein! Came in on my own for dinner while in town for a work trip. This is right in my old neighborhood but was not here when I lived here. I wish it had been! Best kung pao I've ever had. This is kung pao done right. I ate the whole plate in one sitting because I just couldn't stop myself. Service was fine. I didn't need it to be more than what it was. And prices are fair. My tolerance for spicy is not the greatest, but every time Sichuan Impression has one of their special set menus (which seems to happen at least 2 or 3 times a years), I have to pay a visit. Most recently, in celebration of their 11 year anniversary, they ran a $78 combo (that serves 4-6 people) that allowed you to pick 5 courses. And the best things is that some of these selections include some of their most popular dishes. My absolute faves include: Boiled Fish with Rattan Pepper Stir-Fried Chili Chicken (although I wish their set menu includes the intestine version in addition to the chicken) Mini Lamb Skewer Tender Bamboo Shoots in Chili Sauce For the amount of food you get, it ends up not being a bad deal, especially splits amongst 4+ people. But instead of seating us, the restaurant made us keep waiting because people ahead of us on the waitlist had not arrived yet. If the restaurant requires a party to be fully present before being seated, then parties that are not fully present should not hold up everyone else. One of my fave sichuan places! I crave the lamb skewers and picked fish soup at least once month so bad. The service is super quick here too. I came here on a Friday got sat right away and scanned the menu and sent in our order and the food was out within minutes. The only bothersome aspects were having to order from a kiosk, so no questions being answered, and picking up the order was not at the entrance, it was in the back, but no signs saying so. Crunchy cucumber and string beans, that tingling, numbing feeling from the peppercorn. Hot dishes, cold dishes, beef, lamb. Everything is delicious. Great thing too, just scan the QR menu and order directly on your phone. It tallies it up and assigns the check to the table on the browser. You can tell that the sausage has been aged so it's got a nice firm texture on the outside but the fat inside allows you to savor all of the spices you get from the peppers and chilis. I was able to taste high notes of the chili bean paste and heavy chili oil. So so so good Mama's Handmade Noodles - 5/5: These noodles are straight from heaven... In fact my mouth is drooling just writing this review. I am convinced that they did not settle for noodles anything less than hand pulled. You get 2-3 chews of the noodles before they completely melt in your mouth. These noodles were immaculate. I like how the noodles were paired with daikon for that perfect firm-chewy texture combination. Broth was good as well - rich but also light! Good sharing dish. Oh and the egg was a nice choice haha I feel like anything else wouldn't have felt right. Tea Smoked Pork Ribs - 7/5: EVERYONE PLEASE ORDER THESE!!! These were some of the BEST RIBS I've ever had in my LIFE!!!!!!! They were so flavorful, delectable and tasty. Slightly sweet - honestly whatever they marinated these ribs in with tea is such a killer combination. These ribs weren't pull-the-meat-off-the-bone-effortlessly type of soft, but just a notch above and would slide off the bone when you eat them. These were smokey, a little sweet, and SOOOOO SAVORY!!!! I got the umami vibes from these. The tea is subtle enough but not overpowering and I was really able to identify the ingredients individually - soy sauce, ginger, tea, brown sugar, vinegar (these are all assumptions but the ratio of all of the ingredients in their marinade was such a perfect balance that I am confident that these were the the one) To pull it all together, they had these crushed peanuts and fried garlic bits on top which absolutely blew me away with a contrasting texture change. They really shine here and these ribs are the reason I am coming back Toothpick Lamb - 6/5: Guys you could taste ALLLLL the chilis here! Honestly these were my favorite until we got the ribs haha. There was a nice char to each of the pieces as well which provided a nice crunch on the outside but revealed a softer inside. This is a must have as well especially if you come in with a party. If you are spice averse these are a good intro to Sichuan cuisine. Not too spicy but spicy enough to have a tingling feeling between the corners of your mouth. Like the name says each piece of lamb has a toothpick in it so it so perhaps this would be a good fingerfood type of appetizer as well. Came here on weeknight evening to try out their spring menu. The last time I visited, this restaurant was probably over 10 years ago. Wanted to give it a try again. It was enjoyable at that time, but will not go back. We were disappointed with the small serving size of the spring menu entrees. It does not seem like the regular size and so between the four of us, we were still hungry and ordered two more dishes, which turned out to be a good size for us. Would recommend skipping their promotional menu items because their portions are a lot smaller. The dumplings were not impressive as the name says. There was barely any filling in it, and it was almost flat as a pancake. Left feeling unsatisfied in my stomach was not happy with me afterwards and the next day. Taking an anti-acid beforehand didn't help me. The service was severely lacking. I am accustomed to this type of service in many similar type restaurants, but this was not acceptable. Flavors held up over the years, never gets tiring coming here. The Tasty Chicken dish here is normally quite heavy on the MaLa spice but this place uses very little which is good for people like me. Hope this place never changes! Decently lit inside and plenty of room for large parties. Food comes out pretty quickly too so not much wait time, very appreciated. This places runs pretty well as a restaurant. read more
