The Bagel Pub is a quaint corner bagel spot in Sunset Park and while I've known about it for some time, its not the most convenient for me since I live in Bay Ridge and there are plenty of bagel stores for me to choose from on any given day. This past Sunday however, I took a ride with my friend to the also nearby Costco as she and her family needed some things and while we were planning on the Dunkin Donuts that is right there, she wanted one of the tasty muffins from Bagel Pub. Once inside I viewed the cozy space which was mostly a food preparation area with a small corridor for the customers to line up and get their goodies. The bagels looked great but my own mindset was fixated on the DD "Meal Deal" today but my friend did get their muffin but nothing else. I didn't see any area where the customer can go and sit but from the outside there seemed to be an adjacent area that looks like its unused at this time. The COVID times changes a lot of places mode of operation and sometimes what used to be open isn't anymore but I digress. My friend and I did end up in Dunkin and she shared half of her poppy seed muffin so I can say that its super tasty and filling. I just wish that I had thought of taking a photo before it was in devour mode. This does seem to be a popular spot if you are a nearby neighbor but for me its on the distant side and I felt that it might be a little pricier than some of the places that I already go. Had we not been going to Costco I wouldn't have even been at this particular Dunkin Donuts. Maybe next time that this is the mission I will try something more substantial and update this Yelp.

Whenever I come here I'm served pretty quickly (except for once where I was ignored for a while) and I usually dine in. I love how there's outlets to charge your device while you dine. Typically, I hang out after eating to digest my meal and kill time before running errands or heading to an appointment.

I'm a huge pretzel lover, so I knew that I had to give this bagel a try and I'm pleased to say that it did not disappoint!! It was soft, salty and very flavorful - combined with my favorite (egg and cheese), it was a delightful combination that was oh so satisfying after running 3 miles. The bagels were good but competition is stiff and I can't say this was the fluffiest or softest or most inventive bagel I've ever had. It was fresh and it was good. I do think it's a great bagel place to come to with kids as my 7 year old was thrilled to see cream cheese options like birthday cake and Oreo (what she settled on). The price point was good and the space is well designed with a few seats inside. I was surprised to see it so empty on a Saturday morning but guess it'll take awhile for people to let go of whatever their other favorite bagel is in the neighborhood to give this one a try. Grabstein's Bagels is new to me (evidently it's a local mini-chain with a few locations in…read moreManhattan) and new to Smith Street. This past Sunday I saw that they'd opened their doors, and I had to give them a whirl. The shop is new and clean and bright, with a little bit of seating and a beautiful counter displaying all the schmears and smoked fish that you could want on a bagel. Their menu is surprisingly extensive, with many options beyond the typical bagel things like burgers, wraps, salads, and more. There's a sandwich on the menu called "The Murder" that comes with chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and barbecue sauce...and I like those things, and will one day get down with murder. The Murder, I mean. However, that's more of a second or third date sandwich. For my first venture with Grabstein's, I rolled with the Lox 'N' Loaded. A classic combo of nova lox, scallion cream cheese, capers, and red onion, and I think a good barometer for a bagel shop. I think they were a little busier than they expected for one of their first days open, so they were out of a lot of options. Most importantly, there were no everything bagels (my go-to) and no flagels of any kind (despite them being listed on the menu), so I went with a whole wheat everything. NBD. This was a good bagel sandwich. I would've appreciated a little more lox and a little less tomato, but I enjoyed it (as I do all bagel sandwiches). I will say that while it was tasty, the bagel was not exactly hot out of the oven (it was around 11 am). I know that it's impossible for a bagel shop to always have hot and fresh bagels, but I tell you this because it relates to the extraneous anecdote below. Read on if you'd like, but know that these are solid bagels in a nice new shop for the area. Extraneous Anecdote: When I stepped up to the counter I said, "Hey, how you doing?" Before I could tell the older gentleman manning the register what I wanted (if we're being honest, I wasn't truly wondering how he was doing), he launched into a bit of a diatribe about how a lot of people seemed to want their bagels toasted that ended hilariously with, "Shoot me now." Now, I can only assume this man was Mr. Grabstein himself. Only an old Jew who owned the shop could be this cranky about people toasting bagels, and I say this as a medium aged Jew who has known many cranky old Jews since I was a young Jew. And I get that many people are bagel purists who don't believe in toasting. I generally do not get my bagels toasted, as a warm, fresh bagel doesn't need any toasting. But I also think it is super funny to complain to a new customer about other customers wanting their bagels toasted, when for all you know I want my bagel toasted.
