In this intensely transactional and bland part of the city, Timgad is almost oxymoronic. In the basement of the federal triangle metro stop, it serves as a spot of warmth and charm, from its friendly staff to the bright and cheerful orange walls. Timgad feels like the kind of place you could just as easily take a date, a laptop to work on, or your parents. It's a place that feels both communal and personal. Extremely disappointed in this place. Was excited because I saw that have Compass coffee, one of my newest favorite local blends, but the customer service was horrible. The customer service rep taking my order clearly didn't listen to me when I ordered an iced latte (not a complicated order!) with light syrup, and instead charged me for the most expensive item on the menu that I didn't order. I was super confused about why my medium latte was over $6, and when I saw my receipt and questioned it, instead of making it right, she argued with me and said she actually charged me less than she should have. I was among the first to visit Timgad Cafe this morning and ordered a chai latte. Although I'm not super impressed with the drink (not very flavorful) I will definitely come back to try more of the coffee and food (sandwiches & salads) menus and see how they work through first-day kinks. I enjoyed the super friendly staff and up-beat African music! They also sell handicrafts from Gone Rural boMake, a community development organization from Swaziland, which empowers women artisans. This is likely a welcomed addition to the routine offerings at the RRB. read more

The personnel were incredibly efficient and helpful, ESPECIALLY the afternoon crew of Jasmine, Latrice, Lamar and one other whose name unfortunately escapes me. I tried this place the first day it opened. I had the Parma sandwich for lunch and it was very good. It was prepared while I waited. The prep time was acceptable. I am giving this 2 stars because when I went back for a second visit during lunch they had run out of bread --- really? I can't understand how a sandwich shop runs out of bread during lunch hour on a Wednesday.....I question the adequacy of the management. I hope this place survives. read more

I came here because reviews said it had great vegetarian options - well they were out of the one vegetarian sandwich, and weren't at all helpful with suggesting any alternatives. Walked in around 10:45 a.m. yesterday, through the one door the sign said to use. Almost all the seats were taken, but no one was in line except one lady waiting for her espresso drink to be made, so I walked in. I got in line, ready to place my order. No one acknowledged me. Two men were chatting with each other behind the register. One woman was understandably busy working the espresso machine. I tried to get someone's attention behind the registers; but they kept on chatting away - not even a "we'll be right with you." So, I walked out and gave my business to Saxby's Coffee inside the Ronald Reagan Building instead, even though I didn't want to deal with building security and the food court crowd. Hands down best coffee I've had in DC! Finally a proper espresso. On par with Seattle and most of Italy. The baristas know what they're doing and always ask how my coffee is after the first sip. They really seem to mean it. Parma sandwich is also excellent. This is my go-to lunch spot. read more

It's location is extremely convenient if you're looking for a quick bite, but I was disappointed given the high ratings. The employees were munching on their snacks behind the counter and took their time with our orders. The coffee is decent, the smoothies were terrible. Just discovered this little bitty cafe yesterday. Tucked under the EPA near Fed Triangle metro in an open food court below street level. They only do a few sandwiches but wow! They do a Parma and a Genoa and a veggie and a few other things on a baguette. Had the Parma. This sandwich transported me back to Italy. It was delicious. My family ended up here for lunch, not coffee, as our museum touring plans changed for the day and we didn't go to the place I'd otherwise selected for the day's lunch stop. I was aiming for something pretty close to the mall and chose it based on the reviews and the menu of sandwiches. Finding the cafe was a challenge, though. It's below ground level in a circular space in the Ronald Reagan Building's courtyard that is connected with above by stairs and leads to the Federal Triangle metro stop. The cafe is nice enough and has good light though it's downstairs. The guy I'd say is the owner was very friendly and treated us like we were usuals, which is who else was there eating, drinking coffee, or working on a laptop. The sandwiches were really good, though they were not huge for the price. We chose to forego and of the bags of chips, soup, or baked items that were also sold. The name, by the way, comes from a Roman town whose ruins are in Algeria. read more

Excellent coffee but downgraded rating because: 1. Overpriced for standard coffee ($3...) 2. Cleanliness. Walked up to order today and there was multiple cups of coffee sitting around. I get that this happens during rush hour and normally would not be an issue for me. BUT. When I walked up to order my $3 standard coffee today I was asked medium or dark? Paid, tipped, waited. waited. The barista then said "ma'am" and pointed to one of the cups of coffee sitting out at the register. No thank you. That could have been a returned cup of cold coffee or worse decaf. When I mentioned that cup had been there when I ordered there was a bit of snippy attitude as she said "well if you want a fresh one.." as she poured. (Doesn't everyone want fresh coffee?) Oh well. This was definitely a fluke so I'll still come back but heads up to definitely be alert that you see them pour your coffee. read more

Friendly folks and great food and drinks but, in case this matters to you: 1) they don't serve non-fat/skim milk and 2) they don't say so. I understand why they don't like to use skim but, for integrity, they need to let customers know when they're ordering a non-fat or skim drink that they'll get low-fat instead. The owner/manager team know what's up (and falsely claim they always tell customers) but, honestly, some of the staff don't even know the difference in the milks. read more

Surprisingly good cafe for being just a few steps from the Federal Triangle Metro stop. I had a chicken and pesto sandwich, with nice tomato, in a fresh baguette. Coffees are also very good with staff who take the effort to make a good capuchino. Nice (non-starbucksy) African music playing when I went in; artwork on the walls. I work at the RRB, so I used to go here frequently. This review is based on customer service; the coffee and ambiance would probably get a 3.5-4 stars from me. However, yesterday morning I had the worst customer service experience of my life with a woman named Alex (or was it Alice?) Trying to make a long story short: They got my order wrong, no big deal, it happens. I even tried to just drink it, but it was too strong for me (it was made with an extra shot of espresso) So I told the barista that my drink was wrong. She immediately asked both of the other employees who had taken my order. The woman who had taken my order quietly admitted to it. Then the barista (right in front of me and all the other customers!) said "This woman claims she didn't order an extra espresso shot, did she?" The poor woman who rang me up looked around sheepishly and said "Yes, she did" So the barista turns to me and says "She said you ordered the extra shot so..." I was very taken aback, and couldn't believe she was being so confrontational. I said "Well, I didn't, so I am not sure what to tell you" Then she asked her co-worker AGAIN if I had ordered the extra shot. To which, the other employee replied yes again. Then the most rude barista on the planet turned back to me and said something about it being really important to communicate clearly and honestly about this, because it slows everything down if they have to remake a drink. I replied that I didn't order the extra shot and I didn't know what to tell her. I also remarked at this point that I had never felt so harassed for asking someone to correct an order. She scoffed "I don't know what you're definition of harassment is, but I am not harassing you" As she re-made my drink she asked me again "so just to clarify, you did actually order the extra shot, right?" I replied "Are you kidding me? NO" Then as she made the drink she talked loudly to her co-worker about how she hadn't done anything wrong, and she was just trying to address the issue in a direct way. Then when she finally gave me my drink (after like 20 minutes in there at this point) and she just had to get in the last combative word and said something along the lines of, I am not harassing you, just trying to have open communication about what happened. I said "Don't worry I won't be coming back" And I won't. This post is already long enough, so I'll stop here. But I think the description speaks for itself about the level of customer service and even just basic respect of others at this place. read more
