I am basing my reviews versus tacos in Southern California. I have in my lifetime been to over 100 taco stands/restaurant. This may be a solid option for Boise, but in my personal opinion on being a foodie, this is possible for tacos. I ordered the chicken, steak (asada), and pork (carnitas). They all came out individually in little paper boats, which was cool. The flavor were decent, but I wouldn't say authentic. They did not serve rice there. I did order chips and salsa. I was disappointed that the salsa looks like Pace Picante. Service was excellent and the place was clean. Overall, a good place to eat, but if you're looking for authentic Mexican tacos, that has to be other places around here. read more

I recently visited Tin Roof Tacos in Boise for a 6-taco to-go order and found it to be a spot with high highs and a few notable lows. Atmosphere & Community Impact The vibe at this Broadway Ave location is undeniably cool. The industrial, "sticker-covered warehouse" aesthetic feels authentic to the local scene, and the outdoor covered patio is a major highlight. On a nice evening, the rustic charcoal fire pit adds a great communal warmth that makes you want to linger with friends. A particularly unique touch is the collection of military patches displayed along the bar area, which adds a personal, respectful character to the space. However, I found it quite surprising that while the decor clearly honors the military, they do not currently offer a standard military or veteran discount. For a place that wears its support on its sleeve, it felt like a bit of a disconnect for us vets. The Tacos: A Deep Dive We sampled a wide variety from the menu, and here is how they stacked up: #5 Picadillo ($3.00): Our absolute favorite. The spicy ground beef was perfectly balanced with soft potatoes and green chilis. It had a "home-cooked" depth of flavor that really stood out--I'd come back just for a tray of these. #7 Beef Fajita ($3.50): A very close second. The grilled steak had a nice spicy kick and was topped with well-charred onions and fresh cilantro. The meat quality was excellent. #1 Pulled Pork ($3.00): This taco was "not bad," but the ratio felt a bit off. The pickled red onions, while bright and fresh, were a little overpowering and tended to mask the flavor of the shredded pork and cotija cheese. #14 Baja Shrimp ($3.50): Unfortunately, this was the low point of the meal. While the chile lime batter sounded promising, the shrimp itself was significantly overcooked and tough. It was difficult to chew, and I ultimately couldn't finish it. Overall Verdict Tin Roof Tacos offers great value and a fantastic casual environment. If you stick to the beef options--especially that Picadillo--you're in for a treat. Tin roof was amazing! The staff was very friendly and they got my order out (two fried fish tacos) before I could even fill up my drink. The food itself tasted delicious, my only complaint would be that the portion of fish provided was quite small, making it a little more imbalanced than I'd prefer. Still grest however. read more

We were by the hospital downtown today. Hungry but didn't want anything crazy big so we decided on Tin Roof Tacos for dinner. Walking in, this joint was poppin!! So many people out on this beautiful Friday. It was nice to see so many people out and about. We checked out their menu board and ordered our goodies. We found a spot at one of the communal tables and hung out till our food was ready. The tacos were in their own individual container which was nice. Everything looked delicious on the tray. I grabbed a few different tacos to try. Shrimp, beef fajita and fried chicken tacos were on tonight's menu. The shrimp taco was good. I wish that the shrimp was fresh fried. I can tell it had been previously fried cause it was cold and the batter was really hard. Adding lime and salsa helped a bit but the batter on it was so hard. The beef fajita taco was my favorite. The beef was tender and flavorful. I enjoyed the sweet grilled onions of top of it. Adding the salsa made it that much more tasty! The fried chicken taco was pretty similar to the shrimp taco. The chicken was previously fried so it was not warm and hard. It had a cream sauce to it which helped the extra crunchy chicken. It was good but I'm sure it would have been that much more fabulous if the chicken was fried fresh. I was still hungry after the 3 tacos so I decided to grab a corn taco. That's probably one I would not reorder again. The corn was dry and then paired with 2 tortillas, it was was like eating cardboard. It was nice to come in and eat with everyone. The beef fajita was legit and I would go back for that taco. I really wish I would have enjoyed the other 3 tacos as much as I did the fajita. I am forever on the search for a great fish taco, so I landed at Tin Roof Tacos. The line was long, yet moved very quickly. Ordered the fish taco, fried chicken taco and chips with queso. My daughter and her friend also ordered the chicken fajita, beef fajita and shrimp taco. Would have loved a combo option, but all tacos, sides and drinks are separately ordered. This place is bustling! Luckily, chips and queso is served upon ordering. Tables are shared with other guests and the patio outside was packed, so we had to side inside and share. Tables and chairs weren't wiped down (nor were they during our entire visit despite several table turnovers), so we had to clean up our eating space. Food came out relatively quickly, those cooks were hustling! The chips and queso were exceptional and for $5, it's a bargain. The queso was spicy, but in a sexy way, and those chips were perfectly salted, which complimented the queso. I could not get enough! The fish taco (4.5/5 stars) was tender, slathered with cilantro and crema was delicious...just wish there was a tad more crema. Fried chicken taco (2.5/5 stars) was a tummy filler, but the chicken was desperately dry. The best part was the jalapeño ranch, by far. Made another visit to Tin Roof Tacos while passing through Boise. It's still a great place. The fried chicken tacos with ranch sauce were excellent. The brisket taco was not as good, but my kids really liked the BBQ brisket tacos and my wife liked the street corn taco. I'm hoping I can remember the types of tacos I've tried in the past so I can cycle through them and pick out my favorites (the fried chicken will definitely make the list). I liked all the options they had and even some veggie options. Ordering was fine but we went to find a seat and all the tables were dirty. No big deal it was pretty busy so I get it. While they were making the tacos I asked for some cups so I can put salsa in them. They told me no just take the squeeze bottle to the table which annoyed me. Then while at the table I was putting salsa on the tacos and the bottle got clogged and sprayed all over my 12 year old daughter. She freaked out and made a scene. Squeeze bottles are a terrible vessel for salsa. On top of that the tacos were mediocre at best. Maybe I'm spoiled living in Southern California but there is no way this place would be able to survive in the south west. They use grocery store quality tortillas and pre shredded cheese. I ordered grilled shrimp double checked with the cashier. After waiting, they brought me breaded shrimp. Then I told him that was wrong and they were going to replace it. 10 minutes later, they had cooked me more fucking breaded shrimp. Then when I asked my money back, I still never got the two dollars. Pro-tip: Don't forget to grab your own salsa and sometimes they forget to give lime slices, but you can ask for it. Highlights: Really affordable tacos especially inside a restaurant and I was surprised to see how many different options they had. Lots of seating options too and it's not in downtown, so there's a big parking lot to take advantage of. Lowlights: There's not a ton of protein in each taco, but at that price point, it kind of makes sense. The grilled fish was very fishy and I probably wouldn't recommend. First time coming to this location and while these tacos don't blow me away the service and food was quick and accurate. Inside was very clean and well kept. I had my usual #4 fried chicken taco, #9 texican which is ground beef and #8 beef brisket. In addition I got a cup of their street corn. Everything was good and fresh and what I love about this place are the prices. These are probably some of the best valued tacos in the area. Always fresh and tasty and whole nitro stuffed definitely not skimpy. The chips are actually fantastic and if you have read any of my Mexican food places you know I judge them 1st by the chips and salsa because to me you have to nail this part of being a legit Mexican joint. The homemade salsa is also a perfect compliment and each of the salsas are uniquely great in their own way. Plus the queso is also good and always get it every time we come here. The only complaint I have is that when you order as a family they mix up all the tacos so it can be kinda a scramble to figure out who's is who's. I'm part of a running group that occasionally meets up at Tin Roof and we all love getting to enjoy these tacos after our outings. I've found that Tin Roof's tacos are flavorful and unique and service is usually fast. They do get pretty busy on weeknights so prepare to wait in line and have your order ready, but it moves quickly! Tin Roof also serves beer, wine, canned cocktails, and frozen margaritas. Six minutes after sending that web form message, I received an email from co-owner Susan Loyd saying she was disappointed to hear of my complaint because the staff had been trained on the proper procedures. She said she had already called the store manager to make sure the issue was addressed. What great customer service. We will be back. ----- We love Tin Roof, but we got a whole lot of attitude from a worker when two parties of customers left on a relatively quiet late Saturday morning and none of the eight workers they had on duty jumped out to wipe down and sanitize the tables. After two or three minutes, my girlfriend walked up to the counter and spoke to one of two woman standing there with nothing to do and asked whether wiping down tables after customers left was part of the reopening protocols as part of the coronavirus pandemic. That's when the attitude got heaped on thick. The woman asked what tables we wanted wiped down. Kristy told her two parties had left and that she thought that was part of the new protocols. Maybe I should quote from the Rebound Idaho website: "Dedicate certain staff members to disinfection of high contact surfaces throughout the establishment and disinfection of tables between parties." Obviously, she either hadn't been trained on the new world order procedures or she just didn't care. Contrast that to our experience a few weeks ago when Tin Roof was still only doing takeout orders. A person took orders outside, there were markings to keep parties 6 feet apart and the staffers were very friendly in taking orders and handing out takeout bags. read more
