Every city has its luxury first level, high quality antique and artisan jewel shops. Unfortunately, Tiny Jewel Box is not one of them. It disappoints. My experience is that it does not possess the quality, level of staff, or provides the experience one expects. If you have to purchase an important piece of jewlery my suggestion would be to go elsewhere. One would think things would operate on a higher level, especially for the prices, which seem excessive for the quality and items. My experience of the service was that it ranges from lukewarm and phony to downright awful, with the exception of perhaps one or two family members. I am looking at my engagement ring as I type this, and I'm almost at a loss for words to describe how much I love this ring. My fiance proposed with a beautiful ring of his mother's, but the setting was worn and too small for me, so we set out to find a setting of our own. We went to Boone and Sons on a recommendation, and had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had anywhere. So I started this journey out a little wary. I didn't want to plop the diamond into a mass-produced platinum prong setting. I wanted yellow gold, bezel set...something different, something that would need to be designed from scratch. We went to a few other small jewelers, but none inspired the confidence I needed to take a leap of faith that they could build the ring I wanted. When we got to Tiny Jewel Box, all my fears were put to rest. They have a gorgeous collection of jewelry, and had a ring in the case that almost matched the one I'd envisioned for myself. Alicia spent a lot of time with us, sketching out my vision, and then brought me in again to see a computer-generated model of the ring. When the finished product came back two months later, I couldn't have prepared myself for how beautiful it was. With the help of Alicia and everyone at Tiny Jewel Box, we created a ring that is unique, gorgeous, and makes me so happy every time I look at it. Thank you! read more

TJB seemed like the ideal place to get my family heirloom silver locket fixed. It's more than 100 years old, with photo of my great-grandfather and perfectly braided lock of hair inside. The glass was broken on the side with the braid, and needed to be replaced. I took it in along with two sets of earrings, one of them antique, that needed minor repairs. First, the staff was supposed to call me when the pieces were ready. After the first call, for one of the pairs of earrings, I heard nothing more. I called after a few more weeks, and the other earrings were ready, but not the locket. Eventually I was told I could pick it up. But when I went to retrieve it I found that the braid was no more; there was just a bunch of hair under a new piece of glass (actually, polycarbonate). No attempt had been made to even make it look neat. I complained, and Alicia asked me what it had looked like when I brought it in for repair; she had no clue, apparently, and I guess nobody else there did either. Luckily I had taken a picture and was able to send it to her. At least another month went by. When I was finally able to pick it up, the hair was in a neat braid. I'm still not positive it's the original hair -- it looks much darker -- but short of DNA testing I'll never know for sure. TJB didn't charge me for the repair. But I won't be going back anytime soon, nor will I recommend it for this sort of thing. Really disappointing experience. read more

My fiancé and I visited several jewelry stores in the DC area when looking at engagement rings. Out of all the places we visited, Tiny Jewel Box had the best selection of high quality diamonds. We worked closely with Brian Ehteshami and he took the time to listen to us and show us a variety of different diamonds and styles. We never felt pressured into buying anything and although our budget was a bit flexible, Brian didn't try to push us to spend more. Over the course of several visits, Brian showed my fiancé a specific diamond that she fell in love with and she ended up getting a simple design to show off the one diamond. They also stayed in close contact with us and sent us mark ups of the ring's design as it was being made and also helped resolve questions from our insurance company when we got the ring insured. Like MJ, I have not purchased anything at Tiny Jewel Box, but my experience there today definitely warranted five stars! I recently acquired two family rings and wanted to get them cleaned and resized, and see about polishing one with a slightly chipped stone. The man at the repair counter was extremely friendly and helpful--he cleaned both rings while I waited, gratis, gave me the name of a local business that can resize for me (their equipment would melt the silver), and gave me an estimate for sending the other ring to be polished. He provided just the right level of information without pushing any services or goods on me. I will definitely be back when I'm in the market to buy! read more

My experience with Tiny Jewel Box was great! I was interested in their estate/vintage section so my review will affect only this part of the store. About 6 months ago I saw a wonderful vintage diamond ring in the Tiny Jewel Box website, however, the price was enough respectful so I was only watching and admiring it. For 6 months I was monitoring this particular ring and finally I accumulated enough money so I decided to call them. The phone customer service was easy and efficient, first, they had to be sure that they have the ring in hand, after that they answered all my questions. Luckily they had Mother's day sale so the ring price was discounted. I made an appointment and I went there 2 days later. They validate the parking so parking in DC wasn't an issue. The store is luxury looking with friendly atmosphere. They showed me the ring that I was interested, and it was as beautiful as the pictures presented it! However, to be sure that this is "my ring" I browsed the entire estate/vintage section, but finally I decided to go with my first choice. The customer service that I received was outstanding, they were very friendly and accurate. Moreover the jewelry that I purchased there is one of a kind! I definitely will return if I spot another piece of jewelry that I'm interested in. One small detail impressed me too - the luxury jewelry box that my ring comes with! Jewelry store owners have to know that even small detail can ruin the good impression. Saving money packing expensive jewelry in a cheap jewelry box is bad idea. We almost bought my engagement ring here, so we went in several times. The service is very good (esp. Matthew, one of the owners I think) and their selection is not huge but very eclectic. They had some beautiful pieces. The only reason I wouldn't give them 5 stars is because they are really freaking expensive. We were looking for a vintage ring, and for the size of diamond we were looking at, their price was about double what the ring was worth, and about 50% more than we ended up paying at another store. read more

I went to the TJB mostly because it is near my office and I was in the market for a pair of diamond studs (my very first piece of diamond jewelry). I was a little intimidated at the prospect of making such a purchase given that, at the time, I knew absolutely nothing about diamonds. Enter Rich Spero. He patiently explained to me color, cut, clarity, and even what a culet is -- all with examples under the loop. Since I wanted an Asscher cut, which TBJ did not have in stock at the weight I was looking at (about 1 ct tw), Rich set out on a search to find my stones. He stressed that I was under no obligation to take any stones that he got in and that he would look until he found stones that fit the bill. He quickly found the perfect stones for me, and I really appreciated that during the entire process, there was no pressure whatsoever. Given what I have seen in their display cases, this was not a huge purchase in that store, but I did not for one second feel like a second class citizen -- quite the opposite. Also, I have been back in several times (and made one additional minor purchase), and everyone on the first floor is just fantastic. I have always felt extremely welcome even when just browsing. Read this if you are interested in custom designed jewelry. I reached out to over 20 jewelry stores while trying to put together an extremely specific custom jewelry project as a gift for my wonderful girlfriend. I can not emphasize the phrase "extremely specific" enough- it was a tough project that I'd never heard of before. No stores replied to my request except for Alicia Arnold from TJB, who impressed me with her professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to it from the start. She took on this entire project with me while I was in Greece, and so every correspondence was over email, without any in-person appointment or phone calls. I still can't believe how great of a job she did, considering everything happened over email. She encouraged me to ensure that detail of the project was executed perfectly and in the way that would look best, even details as specific as spacing between engraved letters. She sent me multiple PDF previews as the process progressed and talked me through details of the project that I would never have known to think about before talking with her, often replying to my emails over the weekend. I cannot speak for other TJB employees or services, since Ms. Arnold handled everything, but I can tell you that if you take your custom design idea seriously, you should contact Ms. Arnold at TJB (or whatever store is lucky enough to have her) for your inquiry. I was happy that the price ended up being quite reasonable, and my girlfriend gasped in shock at how nice the gift looked when she opened the box. Worked with Steve on getting an engagement ring. I already had a stone from a family ring and Steve worked with me on a step by step basis of doing the process properly. I had no idea what I was getting into as I don't know anything about jewelry. Steve was informative and gave me all the options. As well Steve made sure the family stone was given it's chance to shine. Steve sent it out for grading (it turned out to be a better stone then we thought) and cleaning. Steve then informed me when it had been returned for the setting into the new base which he had thoroughly gone over it seemed every inch of that base to make sure it was what I wanted. Thank you Steve for knocking this ring out of the park. The BTB loved it and was exactly what she would have picked. You made this less painless and so easy with out ever pushing me towards something I didn't want or need. Informing not pushing. I was looking for a specific Stephen Webster earring, and the very helpful sales staff were able to get a price quote for me by phone within minutes. The earrings arrived quickly. They carry a lot of designers who you can find at Saks, Neimans, or Bloomingdales, but they have some more unique stuff too. It's a pricey shop, but the customer service is excellent! read more

I had a great experience at Tiny Jewel Box. I originally came in looking just for a wedding band. Rich was very friendly and helpful. When I decided I didn't like the look of a band on its own, I looked at the vintage engagement rings and found a really special ring that fit my small hands. I ordered a few wedding bands online and wasn't quite sure about them. I called up Rich and went in that same afternoon. Rich looked at the rings I ordered online, showed me a few other options, but ultimately said he couldn't do better than what I found online and I should stick with that. What great service! It's rare these days to find an honest sales person who doesn't try to up-sell you. The only hiccup I experienced was when buying the vintage engagement ring. I called the store to have it put on hold, but when I arrived it hadn't been pulled. Luckily no one else had bought it in the meanwhile. read more

When you want something, but don't know exactly what it is, go see Alicia at TJB and she'll make it perfect. For years I had wanted to redo my wedding ring, and I came across some loose sapphires on a recent trip, so I purchased them and went to TJB. I had never done business there before, but had seen it several times by my office and just new that they were the place to go. They connected me to their in-house designer, Alicia, and she took it from there. I only had a vague idea of what I wanted but she was able to guide me right from the start. When I got the initial sketches, I was worried that I wouldn't find one that I liked, and I was right, I had SEVERAL that I loved! Having to choose from the designs was incredibly tough because they were all special in different ways. Eventually I incorporated ideas from two of the designs together, and Alicia took care of the rest. When I got the finished ring back it was beautiful, and absolutely everything I wanted, even though I didn't know what it was that I wanted. It wasn't even what I was expecting when I got it back, but it was perfect, because when she opened the box I just knew that was exactly the perfect ring. All my friends and family rave over the ring, and I couldn't be happier about it. I was very nervous to start the process because I was afraid it would spiral out of control and become a boondoggle, but it absolutely did not in any way, shape, or form. I had always loved Tiny Jewel Box, so when the time came to pick out an engagement ring this was my first (and only) stop. I originally reached out to make an appointment, thinking we'd be waiting weeks to come in, and was pleasantly surprised when the woman on the line said she would accommodate us personally at our convenience that day. Introducing Jillian Murphy! When we arrived, we were greeted by Jillian and immediately offered a refreshment while we discussed the ring concept. We had done a bit of research, as we all do, the 4 C's, etc. but admittedly were still a bit confused. Jillian took the time to answer our questions and provide a detailed diamond tutorial that was both informative and easy to understand. What I appreciated most about Jillian was her enthusiasm. After getting to know us a bit, she jumped right into the hunt for the perfect ring. We ended up selecting a diamond from a setting on display and had the jewelers create a custom setting. This did mean I wasn't able to take the ring home that day but Jillian kept us updated with the customization and contacted us as soon as it arrived. When we came in to pick the ring up we were once again greeted by Jillian, this time it felt like we were old friends. I can't say enough about this wonderful establishment. We were so thrilled with the service that Tiny Jewel Box offered, and in particular with Alicia, who is an incredibly talented designer and amazing ambassador for the store. We entered TJB after visiting many other stores and designers, and with numerous conflicting ideas in mind about an engagement ring design. Alicia methodically took us through each different component of the ring, asked lots of great questions, and nailed my fiance's (varying/complicated) tastes within minutes! She drew up numerous detailed sketches and produced a stunning ring on a tight turnaround time (and at her busiest time of year!)
