I typically don't write reviews but I should give a fair warning to those interested in dining here. Went with a group of friends to have lunch and saw the high ratings and decided to pick this place. Major mistake.Our first sign was that the owner made us seat ourselves by saying "pick wherever you wanna sit" and waved his hand at us as if we were bothering him. We sat down and finally got the menus. On Google it says this place has Thai cuisine as well as sushi. There was no sushi on the menu that was given to us so we decide to play it safe by getting crab rangoons as a starter. These were not "crab rangoons". There was no crab, it was straight cream cheese. We knew by then that we made a mistake by coming here. We ordered chicken teriyaki and sweet and sour soup. When you pay $17 per person, you expect the food to at least be cooked right? Not at this place. We get our food and it was cold. The only thing warm was the teriyaki sauce that was dumped over the food. The lettuce was unwashed and clearly old, the carrots were barely cooked and cold, the broccoli was raw but was clearly warmed in the microwave and the chicken or should I say chicken slabs were cold to the touch. The sauce was at room temperature and the rice was old and overcooked. The waiter was rude to us and did not come to check in at all during our dining experience. Only thing that was done was him filling up our waters. The final blow was when we were paying for the food. The owner comes up and tells us each our totals. He then proceeds to watch us intensely to see what tip we leave. 2 of us decided to tip due to pressure and the other 2 decided to not tip due to the horrible service and food that was provided. (Note: we all left the food as if it was never touched). The owner clearly got upset with this as he storms off and only brings those 2 their receipts and slam them on the table and yelled at us for not leaving a tip and then proceeded to curse at us under his breath. Sir, the food was not good, and overall your attitude was a shocker. I've never had that bad of an experience especially with the owner of the place. I recommend that the owner should learn how to be respectful to his customers instead of acting out the way he did. Overall, save your money and tastebuds, McDonald's would be better than this place. read more

Interesting combo of a thai restaurant up front and a sushi bar in the back. Food isn't horrible but wasn't the best I've ever had. I came here more out of convenience than anything else since it was within walking distance of where I was staying in the city, open late for a Friday, and I could order for take out. I ordered the spicy basil leaves with chicken and a side of white rice. Caution this is a pretty spicy dish! I accidentally mistaken the green peppers which I thought were bell peppers were actually sliced jalepenos! Ooo weeee! The seasoning and flavors were on point compared to other basil chicken dishes I've have but I was a bit disappointed they seemed to use ground chicken rather than larger pieces of chicken. Fuck this place. The food is way too over priced for how it tastes. You can get much better Thai food most places. The meat is definitely old based on how dry it is and non of the rice was cooked properly. It was like eating play-doh that was sitting in the sun all day at a pre school in Florida. The people working there are complete assholes. The type of asshole staff who when asked questions will just not respond. They act like shitty teenagers do when they're parents ask them to clean their rooms. The interior of this restaurant is modern, clean and inviting. The service seemed accurate and polite. I ordered take out today, as I had never been here before, despite working in the area. I ordered 2 orders of the Chicken Pad Thai. This is one of my favorite dishes. Basic, I know. When I got home to enjoy my dish, the first thing I noticed were the noodles. They are the round rice noodles, not the flat traditional rice noodles. Also, there was a plethora of tofu cubes and egg. There was so much tofu in the dish, I looked on the receipt to see if maybe I had misspoke and ordered the Tofu Pad Thai by mistake! No, according to the packing slip on the bag, I had indeed ordered the Chicken. I found 4 chunks of chicken. Granted, they were delightful, but c'mon. 4 pieces??? And I had to work around a gaggle of tofu pieces. Ugh. I went to this restaurant for a quick after work snack - what I thought would be quick turned into a 40 minute meal. Upon arrival I was motioned by the service staff to come to them only to be told to sit wherever I would like. I ordered the crunchy spicy tuna roll, a scallop nigiri, and a squid nigiri. The rice was a too chewy, the price was high for one piece of nigiri, and I'm pretty sure I got octopus and not squid. I'm surprised by the low reviews here. It's a go-to Thai spot for me. I used to live around the corner so it was initially my go-to out of convenience, but since I've moved across the city I still drive 15 minutes to grab Tiparos on a lazy Sunday night as I haven't found anything I like better. I've tried several dishes and it can be a little hit or miss, but have found a few things on the menu that are fantastic. My two favorite items are the Pad See Ew & Almond Beef. The Pad See Ew is extremely flavorful and a HUGE potion that can definitely be spread over two meals. The Almond Beef has the perfect proportions of meat, veggies (big, delicious mushrooms & bell peppers) as well as crunch with almond pieces and water chesnuts. Very unique flavor here as well. For those giving lower stars on the sushi...I'm not sure what you expect. Any place that serves several Asian Cuisines isn't going to be your highest quality sushi, IMO. If you want great sushi, go to a Japanese restaurant. Not a place that first lists Thai food (FYI, Thailand and Japan are NOT the same country, and in fact, are quite far from each other and very different culturally :) ) Just as a taco at a hot dog joint would be just fine, but wouldn't hold a candle to an authentic Mexican spot, if you want a simple roll of average quality, Tiparos is just fine. read more

Oh man the food is pretty bad. I got the pepper beef, the beef was tough and chewy, and the mushrooms, water chestnuts, and snap peas tasted like they came from a can. The sauce tasted like sugar and had no other flavor beyond the sickening sweetness. Only good thing was the pretty big portion size. read more

For only $10.50, you can have a filling and delicious bowl of sukiyaki soup loaded with veggies, chicken, egg white chunks, and glass noodles. Yes, it is not authentic sukiyaki, but it tastes wonderful, nonetheless! The cilantro gives a southeast Asian flavor, not Japanese at all. We had absolutely delicious food today from Tiparos! My 88 year old mother had a taste for Thai and loves Tiparo. Because of Covid she hasn't ordered in for some time. I told her I'd order and pick it up. We ordered a lot! Enough for lunch with my Mom and dinner at home tonight with my husband. Each dish was better than the last. Had several appetizers. All delicious (Chicken egg roll, Vietnamese spring roll, shrimp dumplings). Also had Tom yum soup and Tom yum noodle soup. Ordered Spicy Basil with Chicken for my hubby. Every dish was delicious. And the "no contact" set up was very efficient. And the staff lovely and appreciative. We literally can't wait to order again! read more

And it's good, so long as you stick with the thai options (honestly, I don't get this thai/chinese/japanese restaurant thing that's so big in the midwest). Clutch is the pad see ew with beef, though the pad thai with chicken is also very good. Quick, fast, easy. Friendly staff, and groupons all the time. Great Thai & Sushi Bar! Every roll we ordered was tasty, without needing heavy sauces. I loved the Tom Yum Noodles Soup; it had perfect balance of lemon grass and heat. The portion of noodles in the soup could feed a family of four. The owner was fantastic; he came by our table multiple times to make sure everything was okay. I love owner operated restaurants; you can really tell he cares about his business. This is my new second favorite sushi joint in Chicago. First of all, the food was pretty decent: rice noodles (Pad See Ew + Pad Kee Mow) were fresh and soft, the Summer Maki was great, and the hamachi and salmon nigiris had generous portions of fish even though the rice was packed too tightly which made for an unbalanced fish-to-rice ratio and an overpriced dish at ~3.50 a piece. The crunchy spicy tuna roll wasn't crunchy, but it had an overall good taste and minimal rice which was nice. That being said, we did have some issues with the food. The fish itself was rather fishy which told me it wasn't all that fresh, and our chicken satay came fully RAW. This was horrifying seeing as it was CHICKEN and not some other meat which would have been fine to undercook. We ate multiple pieces before realizing! They, after around 30 minutes, replaced our remaining pieces of chicken, but we didn't eat them and ended up getting them removed from our bill. Which brings me to the main issue: they were understaffed, busy, and overwhelmed as a business. The wait staff truly is the backbone of this restaurant, and I'm sure it'd crumble if they had to rehire since the waitresses were extremely adept and could memorize our orders without a second thought. Paper plates were used for appetizers (not entrees) due to this issue, which was totally understandable, but when we asked for soy sauce + chopsticks (which I understand is a small, unimportant request during busy hours) which we did not receive with our sushi, the waitress gave us the soy sauce packets and container from the table next to us who had just left-- completely unsanitary, and we ended up eating sushi with our hands (after sanitizing)! We soon found out from overhearing the owner or head sushi chef (he walked around the restaurant asking how the food was, which is why I assume that) that they were doing that due to being understaffed. **I would also like to mention that we were not spoken to by the chef. We made eye contact, tried to get his attention, and were flat-out ignored although he spoke with the two tables on either side of us! Every time we tried to speak about these issues, the staff left and ignored us which was standoffish. We had been discussing the issues with the food and probably were visibly disappointed, so I get them not wanting to rock the boat or waste time but it left us feeling neglected with the $80 bill we paid when we would have liked to discuss all of this. On that same note, their COVID practices were EXTREMELY poor, which is the dealbreaker for me. Without this being taken into consideration, I'd give it three and a half or four stars on a good day. It was disgusting, as much as I hate to say it for a business whose TWO waitresses and TWO sushi chefs seemed to be working their *sses off with a PACKED restaurant (full seating and the sushi bar as well). Tables were wiped down with the same dry cloth and people were seated without any sanitization in-between, waitresses did not wash their hands in between, and one of the sushi chefs left the restaurant for a few minutes and came back in to cook! At different times during our visits, three dogs came in (with their owners), and two sat on the benches which I felt was fine until I saw that they did not clean the benches in between. The bathroom was connected in a different building altogether so it may not be their fault, but it was unkept and out of TP which was also an uncomfortable situation to navigate while they were so busy! Overall, I hope they're able to supplement their wait staff and PAY THEIR WORKERS MUCH, MUCH MORE for the strife they endure. The food could have been AMAZING if just the smallest bit more attention was paid to it but sadly everything we ordered, requested, and said felt like an afterthought especially with regulars sitting next to our table, who were waited on extremely thoroughly with quick service. I would not recommend eating here until they can mitigate their sanitization issues and have a safer working environment for their staff. read more

The reason I'm not giving it 4 stars is because of the food. It was good, but I've had better Thai. The 'spicyness' level was way off, my meal was labeled as such and it definitely was not. I must say I was extremely disappointed in Tiparos. We love Thai food and usually order delivery from Nine Thai near our apartment in Lincoln Park or Andy's Thai Kitchen in Lakeview, which is consistently excellent. One night we decided to switch things up and try Tiparos, about which we'd heard good things from some of our friends. The delivery was fast and efficient, and the food was hot when it arrived, but honestly nothing tasted all that good. One of the appetizers - the Tod Mun - was just okay, though we've had better. The other appetizer - the spicy beef - was not at all spicy and just tough, tasteless, chewy pieces of beef. Even with sriracha sauce it wasn't very good. As an entree, we shared the panang chicken curry, a dish we've had countless times from other Thai restaurants, but this version was totally unlike we've had any other place. Far from being a delicate, mildly spicy peanut-infused curry sauce as it's supposed to be, Tiparos's panang curry was a thick, gloppy, mess, more like diluted peanut butter than true panang curry sauce. I've had "chicken in peanut sauce" at other Thai restaurants, and this resembled that dish far more than it resembled panang curry. Perhaps the other curries at Tiparos are more tasty and authentic, but unfortunately this restaurant is now off our list. read more

I had been a regular customer until I noticed that they are charging a $2.50 service fee (which is 15% of the bill on Tiparo's Eat Street service) for online orders for pick-up. This makes no sense at all. At a time when restaurant income is down due to covid, you would think that the restaurant would be pleased to welcome online customers who pick up their orders. Went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a local. The sushi was good, but we also ordered the Tom Yum soup and it didn't taste like anything other than watered down miso soup, as it did not contain the main ingredients of Tom Yum soup - lemongrass, mushrooms, Kaffir lime. While eating, a small cockroach crawled along the bench towards my leg and startled me. I felt like I wanted to leave immediately! Instead I moved to the other side of the table and tried to continue eating. Ten minutes later the roach crawled on the table! My friend grabbed the paper napkin and squashed it. The waitress came up and he showed her. She said, "oh," then brought us a couple of new paper napkins. No apology or discount, etc. At the end of the meal, when we stood up to leave, a full size cockroach ran under our table near my foot. Horrifying. read more

I am surprised to see this place with such low stars. I found my experience here to be rather enjoyable. The tables were clean and the decor was nice. We had prompt service by our waitress who gave us time to look over the menu but also came back to check on us for when we were ready. They read our order back to us to make sure they had it right (something I really appreciated). I ordered pad thai and found it to be rather delicious, with it not being overly sweet the way that it can sometimes be. I also got the cucumber salad, which I also found to be good. I felt the price point was appropriate for the amount of food received. Service was polite and nice. Only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the timing of the food wasn't great. We ordered some appetizers that came out about 2 minute before the main food came out, so things got a little hectic. read more

Too many places to chose from and this should not be one of them. Seriously this is the worst Thai food I have ever had in my entire life and I have eaten a A LOT of Thai food over the years. I love Thai food. It is one my favorite go-to cuisines. I want so desperately to like this place - even to tolerate this place. I have tried it 3 times in hopes that it has become better or hoping if I try a different dish, that it will be better. It is less than a block away from me and at this point, I would not eat there even if my entire meal and drinks were free. My last (and final) visit: It was a cold night. My bf and I were lazy, and he wanted to try this place since it was so close by. I warned him about how awful it was but he insisted that no place could be that bad....He ate his words. Based of our last visit: We got 2 dishes and both were terrible. We had some sort of beef dish - the 'meat' was rubbery and after one bite, I could not stomach another. The noodle dish was edible but not the least bit satisfactory. It was not cooked right and was flavorless. I'd much rather warm up any frozen dish from any grocery store. My bf and I did not finish even 1/2 of our food. We talked about how we would even not give the leftovers to a dog because that would be cruel. Please - save yourself. While I have not tried all of the Thai restaurants in Chicago, I would bet good money that if you went to ANY other Thai place - the food would be significantly better. I seriously can't understand how this place is still open or how people manage to give it 3 stars or higher?! Do the people of Old Town lack tastebuds? How I managed to NOT write a review months ago when I ate here is a mystery?... Oh wait, no its not. I suffered from gastro-intestinal distress for several days. It took a solid week or so before my gut biome returned to normal. I tried to block out the trauma afterwards. Despite my girlfriend's prior dire warnings of this place, I did not think it could be that bad. It was. We ordered two entrees (sorry, I don't recall what they were). One was at best so-so. The other looked/tasted like someone tossed a can of dog food and brown gravy into a sautee pan for 10 minutes. As I mentioned, I didn't feel right for a good week. I don't understand how this place stays open unless its a front for some seedy mob types. It is not an average nearby take out joint which I could see benefitting from all the residences and high-rises nearby. It is simply disgusting. A truly wretched place. Please save your taste-buds, stomach, and gastrointestinal system from this torture (unless your a culinary masochist). Tiparos, you are .5 stars above Nan's for the second grossest delivery of food I've ever received. Thanks to Yelp's unintentional generosity, your review gets rounded up to two stars. After Aroma changed their pad Thai noodles for the worst, I have been trying to find a new Thai delivery spot. So I ordered from Tiparos through delivery.com. Things started off poorly when the delivery guy didn't have correct change, so I ended up having to tip him 40%. No apologies, just a "thank you very much!" and a sly smile that made me feel like I'd been scammed. But I thought, if the food is great, I don't care. And the disappointment continued. Crab rangoon was inedible. I have NEVER experienced this. I was a little taken aback by the price ($5.50) but when I opened the package and saw six huge pieces, I understood why they cost a bit more than average. I excitedly plopped one in my mouth and, no joke, spit the thing out. The filling tasted like that nasty onion soup mix dip that my mom used to make--you know, the onion soup powder packet mixed with sour cream. And it was the same color. What, exactly, causes cream cheese and imitation crab meat to take on a lovely shade of taupe? Dis-gust-ing. Now, I am of the school of thought that ANYTHING tastes good when it is deep fried. Too often, you can catch me saying things like, "I would eat the sole of my shoe if you deep fried it." But tonight I ate, and spit out, my words. Then there was the beef with broccoli. More broccoli than beef (fine because I was feeling a bit of a veggie withdrawal) and the beef had that lovely iridescent sheen that you can only find at Taco Bell or Subway. I like shiny things, but typically not in my stomach. The chicken paid Thai was slimy and the chicken funky. The only bright spot was the rice, which was cooked to perfection and provided my only actual sustenance.
