We had just received a shocking high repair estimate at another facility and happened to see a news segment about Ask Patty Certified shops, and so we found Jim - along with a strong recommendation from a woman we know. Many years later, we are loyal customers. The fact is, we can all be taken by a mechanic. How do we really know? Ask Patty is another layer of consumer protection. I have never experienced any of the shenanigans I have endured at so many other car places. Sure, Jim will tell you he can repair all that minor stuff like bulbs and air filters that anyone can easily do themselves, but what I rely on him for are the major repairs, not just maintenance. If my wife happens to be the one taking the car in, she has Jim do that minor stuff. Jim founded his shop after many years in the business, thus establishing his credibility. He is a straight shooter and will tell you what needs to be done and not done. He is no pressure to do repairs. I have never had an issue with a repair that required me to come back, it failed early, or I had to make a warranty claim on his shop's work. He has a coupon sheet that we have always used to keep our three cars going. He referred us to an inexpensive auto body dude who does repairs from his garage. Jim also has the free loaner vehicles. For quick stuff I connect to his WiFi and work there, chatting with him about all sorts of stuff. He has good coffee. He has an annual car show thing. They treat you like family, never talked down to me or patronize me (a big thing for a female who is used to others trying to make me feel badly or take advantage of me). This has been my experience at all their locations. Most recently, I was heading back to Wisconsin for a family wedding. Long story short- I had car issues and Nelson's was the first call I made. They told me to bring it by and looked at it immediately. They were so kind, quick to act, and empathetic--I truly felt seen and valued. They replaced a battery that was 5days old and hadn't been driven more than 10 miles. Falsifying the battery reading. Had a check engine light go on and Norms couldn't figure it out- "some electrical code" they said and "we don't really do electrical stuff" so they cleared the code, charged $120 and sent me on my way. You'll be shocked to hear, the check engine light returned. Took it to the dealer, they figured it out of course. Any shop that says they don't do electrical stuff in this day and age is a red flag- most cars are essentially computers now. My son brought his car to the Uptown location after doing extensive research to diagnose the issue with his vehicle. He provided the information to the service manager and was told by the service manager that they had to perform a diagnostic for $89. After performing the diagnostic, he was told that there was something else that could be causing the issue but the they weren't sure if it would fix the problem. He was then charged ANOTHER $280 for diagnostics. Over $600 worth of repair work was performed, the problem was not fixed, and he was then given an estimate to do the procedure that my son told them was the problem in the FIRST PLACE!! Then he was told that the repairs he INITIALLY asked them to fix would cost almost another $6,000!!! If the issue had been correctly diagnosed the FIRST TIME, he could have declined the service and looked into other alternatives. When I asked if they would waive all the diagnostic fees at least, they were only willing to waive $200. I only asked for an additional 10% discount to make things right, and was denied. So not only did we pay for repairs that didn't fix the car, but the manager did not think they did anything wrong. This is totally unacceptable. I would not trust this business to complete ANY car repairs. Potential customers would be better off paying extra to go to a reputable dealer.
