The Tiwa Cafe is going through growing pains. Right now it's doing well if you get the right people. One night night our manager was Hugo, server was John, and greeter Jordan. We had a small issue with the greeter but Hugo took really good care of us, seated us where we wanted. The menu will be changing to more local fare but this could be a mistake. The menu is good right now and there are too many local places doing local food well. The rumored Monte Cristo sandwich resides here. While playing poker at Isleta Casino, I had a server deliver a BBQ Bacon Burger with fries. I guess they didn't want me to leave the poker game. They told me the food came from the Tiwa Cafe. I saw the bad reviews but I trust my gut, nose and palate enough to give it a try. It was worth it. Atmosphere It's modern, dimly but warmly lit with medium dark wood paneled floors, lighter wood paneled and painted walls, large booths and tables to break up the space. There are a few TVs in the dinning area and plenty of sport-filled TVs in the lounge area. Food The Elk in a Blanket was very good. Burgers are good these days, especially the Mushroom Swiss Burger. The variety of sides is good. Potato casserole is an excellent side. Salad bar is ok. BLT is pretty good. Monte Cristo is greasy, cheesy, dessert, and meaty goodness all in one. Service The front desk was quick to seat us. Our server, John, was nice and attentive. He made good recommendations and got the food out quick. We got Bianca another night and she was fantastic, great smile. Matthew is very cool and attentive. The morning crew is slow. At 6:30A.M., we couldn't tell if the place was open, no staff were visible. Roberta was ok. If there are any issues with service and shift managers do not respond to your satisfaction, speak with the food and beverage manager or even casino manager before you leave. The night shift definitely does better on customer service. Warnings Skip the fries and Asian bowls. Avoid Monday night 2-for-1 prime rib special. They don't know how to cook prime rib. Don't use a gift credit card, for some odd reason not accepted. It's a solid 3.5 stars and only needs a few improvements to make it 4 stars. Keep it up Tiwa Cafe. You're getting better. Note Tiwa Cafe is named after the Tiwa speaking Puebloan Native American tribes in the Rio Grande Valley of northern New Mexico, in this case, Isleta Pueblo tribe.

I have a very special place in my heart for people that work on Christmas eve and Christmas day. I know there are many who are called to work because they were told to but you occasionally run across wonderful, good hearted people that truly love what they do and make a point to spread holiday cheer to their customers. The staff at the Tiwa Restaurant and Lounge were fantastic. We were visiting family in New Mexico and decided to stay at the Isleta Casino hotel since it was close to where the family lives. We rolled into the hotel and got checked in and looked around for dining options. The Tiwa Restaurant and Lounge was a perfect choice. Although we had Christmas dinner at the restaurant, I want to tell you about breakfast. Light, fluffy eggs, delicious eggs benny, huevos rancheros, corned beef hash and eggs, cinnamon rolls or Belgium waffles, this place hits the spot. Serving sizes were huge, flavors of red and green chile authentic and hash browns adorned every order. Located in the main lobby of the Isleta Casino Hotel, Tiwa restaurant and Lounge is the perfect travel stop for breakfast or a hearty lunch or dinner. The Hotel and Casino is a quick 20 minutes south of Downtown Albuquerque and less than 10 minutes from the Airport. Here's a great plan. Have a great breakfast at the hotel, and have the golf car shuttle take you across the street to the golf course for a wonderful day on the links. Whatever your choice of activity, go have breakfast at the Tiwa restaurant.

If the food wasn't bad enough, my wife cut her lip on a piece of plastic in her soup. Let the server know, didn't want anyone else to get cut or choke. She was not given even an apology or manager visit.

Place was okay, service was good but as far as getting our food it took awhile. We came around 7 so maybe it was just the time but there wasn't to many people. Ordered the chicken fettuccine Alfredo, chicken was dry but the noodles and sauce was good. The bread was hard. My son got the chicken fingers those were amazing, but I feel like you can mess those up too much. If I'm close again I'll give this place another shot and try something else.

    Lunch Menu

This restaurant is right in the hotel which is convenient for guest. They offer a variety of food choices prices range from 10.00-30.00. They have a kids menu, nice salad bar and the food is good. Service was good, staff was nice and friendly. We didn't have a long wait in line but I heard the weekend can be about a 30 minute wait depending on the time you come . The earlier the better.

The menus are on a vinyl, to match their theme. And their drink menu is fun. After the wait, a second drink was out of the question. 2. This is a vinyl lounge, and even though they had a setup for a DJ, there was no one playing but a speaker. 3. They have some retro club music going, but no DJ. When we left about an hour later a DJ hadn't steppe dup, but the music was pretty good all the same. We had to wait for our 1st drink for a while. The gal at the front said the DJ has stepped away for a while but would be back soon enough. The drinks were ok, the service was so-so. Upon entering, I was delighted by the marvelous decor and ambiance... terrific artwork and well appointed with tropics-themed cane furnishings. Very romantic and chic. Also, very dark. The lighting was so dim we had to illuminate the menu with the ol phone flashlight. How glamorous! Well, it was also nearly too dim to eat by. Admittedly, middle aged eyes are less keen than youthful ones, and yet... truly, I will go back in daylight hours next time, when the gorgeous skylights can compensate for the scanty lighting. The server was prompt and perfectly modest in zeal and conversation. He saw to it that we received our order in appropriate time. Now, this is a tequila and mescal place, but I ordered from the specialty Michelada list, a cucumber lime version that sounded divine. I do love a Michelada, but sadly, this one was so abundantly salted that I couldn't finish it. (And I'll finish most beverages.) Very big disappointment. I'm sure any number of drinks on the menu are fabulous, but I can't recommend this one. I ordered the tuna tostada, and my husband got the birra nachos. The tostada had fresh tomatoes and cilantro, and the fish was very good and fresh (poke style). The seasoning left something to be desired, though. It was spicy enough, but I do wish there'd been salt and pepper shakers on the table. My guacamole-averse husband gave me the spoonful from his nachos, so that livened it up. As for the nachos, he seemed to approve. It was mostly cheese and meat (minus the spoonful of guac), but he said more ample tomatoes and jalapeños would have overpowered it anyway. I'd describe my food as that sort of high-society modest flavor - minimalist seasonings in favor of purist flavor from the base ingredients. Indeed not comfort food, but great for a lighter mouth and tummy feel. All in all, the flavor experience was so-so. However, the atmosphere is super solid. For that, I'd go back and try something new. During daylight hours, that is.

The decor is absolutely beautiful, we spent a good amount of the time there discussing how cool the art was and how great the space looked overall. I tried two different drinks, first a mango michelada and then the pink man's last word (I think that was the name) and I enjoyed them both. The second was definitely more my preference because it was fruity and sweet but also had some smokiness from the Mezcal. The nachos were absolutely amazing. I will be back for those alone. We tried the Al Pastor and seriously they were the best nachos I've had in a long time. I do wish they would expand their cocktail menu just a little bit. I am a sweet drinker and would love to see a few more options. Service was great, I don't remember the name of our bartender, but he had longer hair and he was very attentive.
