TJ's Warehouse is literally a warehouse, located in an industry area by other warehouses. You may not see TJ's Warehouse business sign initially from Alua St, but may be able to see the larger sign above it, "Maui Chemical & Paper Products, Inc". TJ Warehouse is best known for their bento boxes and was highly recommended by a friend of mine to stop here (Monica S) while visiting Maui. My husband and I ended up coming to this place twice on our last day on the island. We had plans to hike out to Nakalele Blowhole and then eat our bento boxed lunch afterwards. Then later on in the evening, we came back to pick up a few more bento boxes to eat at the airport before catching our late flight out back home. We first arrived at 10 am (plenty of parking in their lot) and saw a large selection of bento boxes and ended up purchasing: Misoyaki ButterFish Bento Box, $8.65 prior to tax- We purchased 2 boxes of this. This box came with a miso glazed butter fish that was just so delicious. The fish was tender, but the only negative was that my fish had a few thin, small bones (but my husband's didn't). Also included in the box was plenty of white rice, a small breaded potato and pickles (my husband liked them but I wasn't much of a fan of how sour it was). Spam Musubi, $1.95 prior to tax- TJ's Warehouse is a Japanese market and so they sell other food items besides bento. They also sell Japanese crackers, chips, etc and house ware items. This spam musubi was great, which it never ceases to amaze me how great spam musubi is from a market in Hawaii. ------------------------- (Total= $20.05 after tax) Mochi Malasada, $0.85 each, prior to tax- My husband ended up purchasing 2 so we each could have one. I loved the chew of the malasadas, definitely better than your typical malasada since it was a mochi. Perfect size and sweetness. Please note that the mochi malasada is paid for at the place next to the bento boxes, where other hot food items are sold. You can also purchase poke bowls next to the bento boxes too. Then later when we came back around 6 pm, we were surprised to see that the poke and the hot food (where we bought the mochi malasadas) were closed and also that there were not as many choices of bento boxes as earlier that morning (so come early). There were also no more spam masubi (oh well, guess we didn't need to get one more before leaving Maui). We ended up getting the following: Seasoned Rice, $3.84 prior to tax- I got the last seasoned rice, which had furikake and edamame. It was a lot of rice but I really liked it. Definitely a portion good enough for 2 people. Yakitori Chicken, $5.89 prior to tax- This was definitely a lot of chicken. I tried to pick the smallest tray of chicken and still did not end up finishing all of it (between my husband and I). The chicken was oily but tasty. Chicken Katsu Curry Bento Box, $7.95 prior to tax- My husband picked this because this was the only full meal bento box left. This was definitely a lot of food for one person and the chicken katsu was pretty good. The curry had a nice hearty- ness. This bento box also had white rice and 2 pork dumpling. --------------------------- (Total= $18.42 after tax) Overall, I am glad that we ended up coming here and was glad that we were able to try this place twice. The airport doesn't have that many food choices and would highly recommend that you consider purchasing food before coming. This review is solely for the poke. As we drove into the lot my daughter asked is I was sure this is where to find poke. I assured her that it was. We walked to the back and found the poke counter. The server was very kind and patient. We shared one bowl with spicy shoyu and regular shoyu over sushi rice. The fish was very fresh! Somehow I missed the mochi filled malasadas. I just love bentos, and the beauty of it all is that when you're in a rush............a bento can be pre-made, and all you have to do a pick & choose a bento to your liking. I was on Maui last week, and upon finishing a job, I made my way to the Wailuku industrial area, to look for a place called - TJ's Warehouse Outlet. Finding TJ's wasn't too hard, as I had my trusty GPS from my phone, but one small tip guys............when you come here............look for the warehouse that has a big sign that says - "Maui Chemical & Paper Products, Inc.". Why did I say this? Well, TJ's Warehouse Outlet is located inside this particular warehouse (see pic). There is a TJ's Warehouse Outlet sign too, but it's much smaller, and sometimes one can miss this sign, so it's easier to look for the big sign of Maui Chemical & Paper Products, Inc.. Upon walking into TJ's, it's like you've walked into a small supermarket. Yes, they sold some dry goods, but they also sold liquor, drinks, desserts, poke, some Hawaiian food (Lau Lau) & of course hot foods. As you know, I just came for a bento that day...........and upon walking around, I also decide to pick up a small tray of garlic chicken. What can I say about the bento? The price of the bento was very reasonable, but taste wise, I've had better. What was a big turn-off for me was that the rice was kinda hard in my bento!. I'm not sure if it was due to the bento sitting under the heating lamp too long? Or the fact that I came here around 3:00 PM to grab a bento for my lunch. I guess if they had made this bento early in the morning, by 3:00 PM the bento was sitting for a very long time.............and the results is what I got in a terrible bento. Same thing with my little tray of garlic chicken............it was soggy, and taste wise..........not that flavorful. Come here later in the day for discounted bentos! I think it's like half off. I got there around 3pm on a weekday and there were a lot to choose from. Chicken karage, spam masubi, etc. The poke counter looked fresh and delicious. The gentleman was very nice and helpful. The store itself is okay. Carried basic necessities. They have a nice assortment of cold drinks to go with your meal. This place is a little off the beaten path and probably only worth visiting if nearby. read more

Maui Chemical Inc. has been around for decades serving mostly wholesale chemical paper and dry goods to the grocery, cleaning and hospitality industry. Their small cash & carry store was rebranded into TJ's a few years ago from owners the Kawasaki Family. This expanded space and their catering business big time. The sell the most local/Japanese bento boxes in central Maui starting at 6am. Here you can find specialty Asia dry goods, condiments, Yamasa shoyu, sushi rice, nori seaweed, udon noodles, potstickers, and frozen unagi. Lots of take out and paper products too. Not in the mood for hot plate lunch? check the fridge case in front of the produce section for crispy salads and freshly made sandwiches and ono potato Mac salad. They have loads of Japanese foods you won't find in your local supermarket, also Korean products, some Thai curry pastes, loads of Asian noodles, teas, as well as local jams and jellies, the list goes on and on. I love coming here to get certain things. TJ'S really stepped up their game. Open 7 days a week. The food selection is pretty good so many choices to choose from. You can get a bento box or an okazuya style from the counter. Food: corned beef hash patty is a hit or miss sometimes you get it cooked perfectly and others it's not cooked that much at all. Rice ball rolled in furikake my favorite soft and moist. The fried chicken is pretty good golden brown and crispy. The prices are great. Also try the pre-made bento box. All kinds of yummieness inside. Also one thing good to try is the maki sushi and shrimp tempura. We also like the mochiko chicken. The service Always friendly and helpful. The people who work here are never in a bad mood, we'll I never met anyone like that yet lol. You can get all kinds of things here food, drinks, things you may need for a luau (party) they have it. A lot has changed over the past 5 years since my last review. TJ's okazuya kitchen and food service is now available 7 days a week, and they've even added a pokē bar. Yup, that definitely deserves a bump in star rating. For some reason, I've always been drawn to their bento selections - Pre-packed items that you sometimes have to settle for because your favorite item isn't under the plastic lid. Today, I climbed out of my box and explored their okazuya counter - Hot foods ready and waiting to be spooned into your take out tray. And the prices cannot be beat! My 2 items with 2 scoops of rice and mac salad came out to $6.80. Amazing. OKAZUYA: The rice and macaroni salad got placed in the styrofoam tray, but the entree selections were placed into a luau tray, then placed inside the styrofoam tray. Good for those who don't like their foods touching, but I'm gonna ask for it to be all up on the rice next time lol! Mushroom Chicken - Chicken chunks, zucchini, fresh mushrooms, julienned carrots. Everything tasted exceptional. Savory with just a hint of sweetness that even I approve of. The chicken was tender, the veggies fresh, and the sauce to die for. This will be my go-to dish from now on. Highly recommended! Chicken Hekka - I've never seen rice noodles so dark and soaked in shoyu like their version. It looked very intimidating and sodium-rich, but was actually pretty good. But, my scoop of hekka had just a tiny, single piece of chicken in it, the rest was all noodles and 3 pieces of aburage which I'm not fond of but ate it any way. Macaroni Salad - Even though their version included carrots, I liked it. The amount of mayo was perfect, perfectly salted, and even had fresh peas mixed in. Yum! SERVICE: A friendly guy put together my plate lunch, and very neatly I might add. Cashier service was fast and professional. Thank you received! So sad this was not a good experience. I am new on island and have heard of this place and wanted to try it. I walked up to a cashier and patiently waited for her to finish with her customer. However before she had done so she stops looks at me and says yes? I said oh would you be able to tell me the price of these tongs? She snaps at me..you have to Wait! I was so humiliated. I wandered away feeling very insulted. She finishes with her customer and basically yells the price at me. I felt so bad. Im like mmm now what do i do. I proceed to there station of bentos supposedly best on the island. And then the clerk behind the poke bar says may i help you and i smiled and said no thank you. She was very sweet and friendly. I ended up putting my items back on the shelf and walking out. As i exited the previous cashier says we have other tongs and i smiled and said im good thank you. At first you might be very confused about this unassuming joint as it's not in what you would figure is a grocery store type area. However, I say its well worth the excursion to head out to TJ's for the gold mine of food. TJ's claim to fame is bento boxes and they have a lot of them that are delicious - butterfish, korean fried chicken nuggets, teriyaki beef, saba, katsu, yakitori, you name it. They're all very filling, and at the price that they are, a great deal for on the go lunch, say for like a picnic or a hike somewhere on Maui. But even better, is later in the pm, they discount their bentos half off to make sure they clear them out. Our family just snagged a ton of them for our various hikes at half off and boy is it great and easy to pack lunch that way. Their poke is pretty good too - I personally like their shoyu ahi - firm pieces of fresh ahi with salty umami punch from the soy. They also have tofu poke for the vegetarians! All in all, if you're looking for cheap/useful grub, TJ's is where its at. read more

TJ's Warehouse Outlet is a long-time spot for bentos and any Japanese goods, along with paper goods on Maui. The supply of utensils and paper goods is pretty extensive, and I'm pretty sure your favorite takeout spot on Maui is dealing with them to bring in those containers you walk out of restaurants and take-outs with. If you want household goods that are offered in Japan: rice cookers, steamers, knives, pots and pans, towels, and the list goes on... they probably could bring it in if they don't have it in stock. Not quite as extensive as a Shirokiya, but definitely on par with Daiei or Don Quixote in terms of Japanese offerings and availability. By the way, you can also get a decent variety of seasonings and dried goods from Japan, Korea, and other places in Asia as well. The final thing that is available for a reasonable price here is the bento. Whether is custom made along the assembly line, poke bowls, some of the hot bentos offered or ala carte, this place is pretty good. Variety combined with decent quality will make it worth a visit if you're on a budget. read more

Originally, I came to TJ's to pick up some bentos (lunchboxes) for the plane trip home, but the selection is quite vast so my party of 4 picked up a few other items, as well. Being that the store is close to the airport, it's an ideal stop before or after arriving at OGG. Here's what we ate: Misoyaki Butterfish Bento $8.25 - I couldn't leave the island and not have their wonderful fish Korean Chicken Bento $5.95 - If you like Korean Fried Chicken, this is the bento to get Meat Jun Bento $5.50 - A classic Korean dish that my companion likes Mini Spam Musubi Bento $5.95 - Hawaiian Grinds at its best Kim Chee Tako Poke $10.99/lb - the octopus was tender, but the kim chee flavor was just ok Mochiko Chicken $2/serving - this was the crowd favorite Mochi Malasadas 85¢ each - these are fun if you like fried mochi (rice cake) With limited carry-on luggage, you can only buy so much, but there was so much more to buy. In addition to being a Japanese market, there were fresh salads, different kinds of poke, plate lunches, and Hawaiian desserts to be had. Additional items that were begging to be purchased was a bag of Sriracha Popcorn $6.42 and a Japanese bath cloth $3.29 which are great for scrubbing your back. I feel as if there are so many huge milestones in life that have been accompanied by some of the party platters or food we have gotten here. Isn't it funny when a grocer can bring those kind of memories? Even our daughter remembers the time Hello Kitty made a surprise appearance here. (she was 3!). We love the hot bar but also the grab and go bentos. You cant go wrong with their poke selection, especially with 3 different sizes available and custom toppings made to order. I decided to check this place out for lunch. A very nice older gentleman behind the poke counter allowed me to sample the miso ahi and garlic ahi poke that I was eyeballing. They were 'ono and I took a bowl to go. The flavors were perfectly mixed and the fish had a very good texture and cut to a nice size. I also couldn't resist and bought a couple of little trays of smoked salmon and some sort of barbecued chicken thighs, which might have been called yakitori? They both were delicious, I did not regret buying those extra things. Its a cute little store with different Japanese items and a very small amount groceries within. The small selection of maybe 10 tomatoes were a little bust up but I bought a couple anyways as it was convenient and I didn't want to do a lot of driving around that day. Lots of parking. The line was long with customers buying lunch and snacks with only one register open. I would definitely return here to get a quick lunch or bento fix and some ice cold drinks. read more

Visiting Maui and was looking for poke bowl. It had many more to offer. Not only poke bowls, it also offers inexpensive bento boxes (Japanese lunchboxes). Each poke bowl and bento is less than $10. We bought a small and a medium poke bowls with a variety of ahi tuna. It wasn't disappointing. Ahi tuna was fresh and well seasoned. Much better than anything we tried in Colorado. It is a small grocery store front, tailored for locals. A gem in Maui. read more

Wanted to love this place. It was referred to me by a local. Unfortunately, it was 3:20 and I think the main bento kitchen was closed and all that was there were the premade boxes. I got the chicken teriyaki, garlic chicken, chicken yakitori, and a beef something...can't remember now. They were all terrible. Also got some sushi. This was also not so great. Not much fish on top and loaded with rice. I wanted to love this place so badly. Other reviews were also good. Everyone inside was nice and locals clearly go here maybe to escape some of the tourist crowds. Maybe ate a few bites from each box. I did eat most of the garlic chicken...but it was a tough go. The rice was good. I really think you have to go when the kitchen is open. Need to be clear that this review is only for the boxes left under the lamp. read more

Decided to check this place out after hiking the Waihee Ridge trail. We weren't originally planning on eating here but the bentos and prepared packaged food was just too alluring. We ended up buying some food for only $38 for four people and eating it outside on the tables. The food was good, not excellent, but great for a quick lunch. We wished that the food was warmer but you can't really get that with food sitting under a warmer. The store itself had a lot of Asian goodies and fresh vegetables but it's not very big. Like a size of a mart. I noticed some if the items was cheaper than in store so maybe it's cheaper to buy some things here. read more

UGH I'm SO DISAPPOINTED with TJ'S...I initially had a "5 star" review for this place - but after my last 2 visits, I will unfortunately stop coming here. An Asian man at the buffet area served me and the portions were SO SMALL....!! The quality of the Nishime also got bad. (it used to be full of chicken, mushrooms, etc) SO SAD!! The size of the vegetable tempura also has been down sized big time. The thing is now this place has gotten popular, the portions/quality has decreased - I'm truly disappointed as I used to frequent this place a lot! For Asian grocery items, they still are well stocked - but for the fresh food - SKIP! Yes, central Maui is very limited when it comes to local bentos -- I suggest driving up to upper Wailuku and going to ICHIBAN OKAZUYA! Cheap and they give PLENTY!!!! read more

My kids and I love eating here! Service is normally welcoming and quick! We love the chicken hekka and think that they have the best on island! After a delayed inter-island flight, we headed to TJ's for what turned out to be half-priced bentos (after 1:30pm). The market is like a mini 99 Ranch, so we loaded up on dry snacks as well. The bentos were solid, and we were even happier with the poke we went back for a couple days later, a total steal at BOGO 50%. TJ's is a great grab-and-go option when you're heading to the beach or somewhere remote, though you need to be used to eating mostly fried items that soften/sog a bit. read more

The last two times I have been here the food has been really mediocre. We got the miso butterfish, and it had no flavor. It was really disappointed after having some really wonderful bento here a few years before, also it was about $8 for two small pieces, and that seems overpriced now that I have tried it. The place on Maui to get your Japanese items. The only place to get genmai cha loose leaf. This is the main reason I come here. The genmai cha they usually have is of decent quality and good price where I can have a pot several times a week. On occasion they have better quality stuff which I get to change it up. The Butterfish Bento is one of my favorite but they do sell out pretty quick esp. lunch time so you gotta get your okole there early =) I am bummed that they are not selling the japanese candy maker (sushi, cake, etc.) anymore. This was the other spot we got our grindz from for my cousin's pre-wedding beach gathering. We had a variety of eats from TJ's. We had their Kalua pork, katsu chicken, macaroni salad, and edamame rice. The Kalua pork was very flavorful and very tender. The katsu chicken had a wonderful crunch and tender interior and topped off with their delicious sauce. The macaroni salad was magnificent, good flavor and tang. I really loved their edamame rice. It had furikake seasoning as well. The rice was cooked perfectly. The blend of flavors was a perfect combo to the tastebuds and helped magnify the other dishes. The lady who helped us with our order was very friendly and rolled our food to our rental car. The portions were perfect for our beach gathering. Glad my cousin went to TJ's. read more
