Maui's version of Marukai! A bit smaller, though. Since they've been doing retail, they've gone through a lot of changes, including rearranging the aisles and condensing items. They've gotten rid of their Hello Kitty aisles and seem to be concentrating more on their hot foods. If there's something Japanese you like, I.e. takuwan or aburage, they got it. A large selection of sauces and canned and boxed foods to help with your cooking. They also sell restaurant/catering supplies like plate lunch boxes and plastic silverware. Prices pretty competitive too. I know they have a lot of products other retailers on Maui don't have and they're usually not as crowded due to their location. If you need a fast freshly made meal, they sell bentos and have a hot line where you can purchase other hot foods, including fried chicken. Parking is pretty easy to find and their hours are normal business hours, plus they open 7 days a week. read more

While visiting a family member at the hospital nearby, I wanted to get something local to Bring back to eat at the hospital. I searched reviews and discovered TJ's Warehouse Outlet in Wailuku. I didn't know what to look for and had a little difficulty finding what I thought was a small restaurant. This is a store that does catering, and has a cafeteria style counter that they sell items a la carte. I ordered the brown rice, macaroni salad, Yakitori Chicken, and Garlic Chicken. The servings were perfect side and the food tasted great. They even have a small covered area with tables near the parking lot to eat. Nothing fancy, just good food. Delicious bentos at cheap prices! TJ's warehouse is located outside of Maui Chemical and Paper in the Wailuku Industrial Park. The store sells local and Asian products, some groceries, tons of Hello Kitty stuff, a seafood/poke bar, and BENTOS. If Long's Drug Store and Shirokiya had a small baby, TJ's would be it! There's a huge variety of bentos, delicious in flavor, lots of stock, and most importantly, the price is right! Mini bentos go as cheap as $3 while "combo" styles and bentos containing more expensive items are around the $10 range, or a couple dollars more. Most bentos usually come with a main dish and 1-4 different "sides" (tsukemono type stuff). If you come around lunch time you'll see lots of people flocking around the bento heaters, eyeing the tasty treats. Luckily, with its huge stock, you won't feel too much remorse when someone inevitably picks up the exact bento you wanted (because there's lots more where that one came from!). Perfect grab-and-go bento for a meal or snack, to soothe your hunger pains at the beach or on the airplane, wherever life may take you! read more

Just went to check this place out and was pleasantly surprised! Lots of decently priced Asian goods and their bento lunches looked amazing (didn't get to eat it tho..) I would go here just for the heck of it if you run out of things to do in Maui. It's located on second floor of a warehouse but it's not too tricky to find. Best okazuya experience on Maui so far. It was $15ish for garlic chkn, teri hot dog, teri hamburger, aji fry, corned beef hash, shrimp tempura, veg tempura, ume musubi, cone sushi and Maki sushi. The nice lady told me "oooh you pretty hungry yeah?" They also have a wide array of prepared bento too. read more

Get there early before they run out of food. Love their huge selection of food and Asian groceries. So many bentos to choose from if you go early enough. Has a nice okazuya line with a lot of items too. They really stepped up their website too. The shirokiya recipe yakitori chicken is still my favorite. Food pretty much as described by MaryFran. I'd remove stars also as a destination while visiting Maui (it's nowhere near any other destination I'm aware of), but as a quick stop on the way to the airport to get food for your flight home, it's 5 stars all the way. The butterfish was amazing. I definitely liked the lower-mayo mac salad, which had green peas as well as the potatoes. Teriyaki chicken and little pan-fried croquettes of corned beef hash (way better than at a famous overrated deli in NYC, according to our teenager) were also memorable. Dirt cheap, and they take credit cards (so you can spend your remaining cash getting one last shave ice at Tom's, which is right around the corner on the way to the airport). The store looked pretty interesting too, but we were on margin for catching our flight so didn't have time to explore. read more

Like MaryFran L, we heard about TJ's from the SF Chronicle and made this a must. Food has been described by other reviewers so I'll add my 2 cents regarding the groceries. I found lots of food omiyage to be cheaper at TJ's Warehouse like Hawaiian jams and jellies, coffee beans, and Maui cookies by $1 to $2 versus roadside stands and the like. We bought almost all our friends and family food items from TJ's so the savings added up. I could have poked around forever because it is such an adventure to roam their aisles but I was on a strict schedule. The little one needed a nap but she was all about loading coffee and cookies into her basket too. She got a kick out of the Japanese zori over near the veggies and would have a pair if they weren't several sizes too large for her. Luckily she didn't discover the sizeable Hello Kitty section! read more

I think the best bento on the island. we pick up several a couple times a week when we don't feel like cooking. Everything is tasty. Worth going a little out of your way. I also like to walk around the store to see what kind of things they have. Lots of stuff from Japan that you can't get anywhere else on the island. read more

Your expectations should not be determined by the "warehouse" in the name. Focus on the delicious bentos (go earlier rather than later for best choice folks!) Simple and tasty. We really enjoyed our inarizushi with korean chicken and teri beef - super filling and hit the spot. Meanwhile they have most everything to meet your Japanese eating needs. Good selection of tsukemono. Also some handy restaurant supplies and Japanese miscellaney. read more

This was excellent. I had plate lunch with chow fun (wide noodles, bacon, ham, some kind of sprouty bean) Yakatori chicken, a "fish stick" (a little on the cool side for me) and "brown rice". The brown rice was more hapo rice (brown/white mix) where three of the grandparents were white - not much in the way of brown. But, for $6.40 it was a pretty darn impressive meal. Take out only, and if you want one of the bento boxes you need to get there at 10:30 (or soon thereafter) if you want the best selection. Good stuff. Always a great place to pick up some grinds. Half off lunch bentos at 2 pm and the okazuya bar has lots to chose from. My personal favorites are the mochiko chicken and chow fun. They have a good selection of poke, both previously frozen and fresh. I also pick up some ingredients for Asian dishes here that I can't get from the local grocery stores. Prices are always affordable and reasonable. If you're a rewards member you also get coupons that you can use every month. read more

Wish we had more time to browse the oriental products since we don't have a place like this in kauai. Located in the same building as Maui Chemical and Paper Products. It's a 4.5 for the prepared food. 5 stars for reasonably-priced, yummy miso butterfish bento. 4 stars for the mochiko chicken (not quite as good as Tin Roof, but no wait & only $5 for a packed pint). Lots of locals coming to pick up bentos (of which there were quite a variety) and they were also busy filling in phone-in (faxed-in) orders at 9am. The broasted chicken (think it was broasted) looked awfully good. Wish I had time to try their malasadas (made from mochi I hear). So much food, so little time. read more

Great place to get some bentos whether on the run or making it a day at the beach in the morning. all different varieties for everyones palate from fish, chicken, beef, shrimp and musubi of course along with a hot bar. As its name suggests, it's quite literally in a warehouse and it definitely looks like an outlet store. If you're looking for some Japanese/Asian groceries, then this is the place to go. If you're looking for some bento boxes, hot food, or poke bowls to go at a reasonable price (compared to other Maui places), then this is definitely your place. We picked up some chicken tonkatsu, some of the fried calamari/squid, and a poke bowl to go. The fried calamari/squid was pretty chewy/hard the next day, which is a sign that it was overcooked, so I'd skip over it. The chicken was great the next day when we did our drive to Mt Haleakala for the sun rise. We ate the poke bowl right after we got it as they have some seating outside and it was pretty delicious. Not the best poke bowl, but it'll definitely satisfy your poke craving. read more

Solid, very affordable bentos - tons of variety and tons of musubi flavors! I'm a big fan of their chicken yakitori - it's so tender, salty and sweet! 1.85 per serving. I read about this place in the San Francisco Chronicle so we set out on a hunt to find it. Actually, if you have the address, it isn't that hard, but it does take you to a part of Wailuku you wouldn't just come across. The place is in a corner of a large Japanese market. You can get bento boxes of pre-packaged food, or you can make-your-own from the steam table. We chose the latter and ended up with way more food than we needed, all for about $16. The highlight of the meal was he butterfish which was pan fried and had a light teriyaki sauce. The only disappointment was the garlic chicken that had a too thick coating and came in a thick sauce. We also had fried rice (pretty average), potato-mac salad (nice example, not too much mayo), mixed vegetables (lots of eggplant which is one of my favorites), chicken in exotic vegetables (which included lotus). For dessert, I picked up guava cream cheese. It came in a nice cookie crumb and walnut crust, and was kinda like one of those jello pies, but made with guava. It had a nice layer of guava jelly on top. It was well worth the $2.50. If you are in Wailuku, or in to exploring foods the local eat at places the locals eat, this might be a fun stop. Otherwise, there are plenty of equally good plate lunch places that I'm sure you can more easily find. read more

If you remember Shirokiya and you miss the food, this is the place for you. This place is a great place to go if you love Japanese products, but you can't go to Japan. It probably isn't as cheap as buying it from Japan, but it is really good. I will go out of my way to buy something from TJ's, just because they have everything that I missed from Shirokiya. They also have a Sanrio section on the Maui Chemical side, so check it out if you have a hard time finding Sanrio products. read more

I was visiting Maui on vacation, and I wanted to eat someplace local and affordable. I found this place on yelp and had the Poke. I came here after the hot food was over, and had some cold food instead... It was delicious. I had some kind of teriyaki poke with brown rice for $10.00. The food, prices, and service is excellent- what more can one ask for? BTW the food section is in the back of the supermarket... so cool..YUMMY! read more

One of my frequent stops as my work is a block away. Good rewards program. The unagi bento is a good deal at $6.95. My Kids favorite is the miso ahi poke. One of the few places to get Japanese foods and goods on the island. read more

Played tourist today - vacationing from Honolulu. Wanted to try someplace different and found this place on Yelp. First off, I was amazed at the great prices. Went to the back and found the got food section. Loved it!!! The serving size was huge, the food good (lots of flavor), and service great! The only thing I was dissapointed with was in the garlic chicken - too much sesame seeds, not enough garlic. The "mochi malasadas" caught my eye and we just had to try it. Sooooo cool!!! We couldn't place the taste, but it was really good!! I'm gonna try and figure out how to make these. read more
