    "Give me one second, I'll pose for your picture Like cheese,…read morecheese, cheese, cheese" (Snoop Dogg) We registered for and attended a "Meet the Maker" seminar at the Simsbury Library with Kate Truini-Redin of New Curds on the Block. (What a super cool name, don't you agree?) Kate is a "cheese monger", an awesome name for a cheese expert, and she shares her expertise of the New England cheese industry through educational appearances and her own cheese and seafood store in Oakville. So, if you want an expertly made cheese board and shrimp cocktails for your next party, look no further than a trip to Oakville. Kate was a delight. A very gifted, funny, and knowledgeable speaker who shared a ton of information on tasting, pairing, buying, and entertaining with cheese. We sampled five types of cheese and enjoyed Kate's information all five. #1 was a Milky White from Rowland Farms in Oxford, CT. It was in the "Fresh Cheese" family and was soft, spreadable, and without a rind. It was very mild and seemed like it would go with just about any food or drink. Kate warned us that these "Fresh Cheeses" have a very short shelf life, so use them up quickly. #2 was a Crema Alpina from Highlawn Farms in Lee, MA, and was an example of the "Washed Rind" cheese family. That means its orange rind is "washed" to discourage mold growth. It had a strong scent and taste, leading to some funny comments from the crowd - "Smells like a barnyard, stinky foot, and a gym bag" It had a savory earthy taste, and Kate recommended serving with cured meats. #3 was a very popular semi-firm Cornerstone from Cato Corner Farm in Colchester, CT. Kate told us that the cheese's gold color is a direct result of the kerotene ingested by the grazing cows in Cato's grass pastures. #4 was a Gray cheese. Those are a hard, firm, and crumbly cheese made in the style of old-time British cheddars. Some of the tasting noted from the audience included "nutty and butterscotch" #5 was the most polarizing sample of the night, because Blue Cheese is not universally loved. We sampled Middlebury Blue from the Blue Ledge Farm in Salisbury, Vermont. We learned that... yes, the blue veins in the cheese and on the rind are indeed evidence of mold. The comments from the crowd were hysterical - "it smells like the inside of a taxicab", "it smells like a lost pair of headphones", and it tastes like "chewing on a cigarette". Personally, I like blue cheese and though the Middlebury Blue ranked fairly high on the "strong meter", I enjoyed my sample and the one my wife passed to me. We can't wait to visit her store and order a cheese platter for Thanksgiving 2025.

    I have to give some well-deserved love to the butcher team at the Watertown Meat Center…read more If you're someone who enjoys cooking (or just enjoys eating really good meat), this place is a gift to have in town. The quality is consistently excellent, but what really sets them apart is that they actually have real butchers behind the counter who know their craft and are happy to help you find -- or cut -- exactly what you're looking for. Case in point: this weekend my youngest son decided he wanted picanha for dinner. Not exactly the most common suburban grocery store request. I walked up to the counter fully prepared for the usual "we might be able to order that for next week" conversation... and within moments they had it cut and ready for me. Boom. Dinner plans saved. Their meat case and selection are honestly elite. Beautiful cuts, great variety, and the kind of quality that makes you want to cook something ambitious. I'll also admit that in some of my past reviews I've had a little "constructive feedback" for other departments in the store. Let's just say I'm slowly making my amends. But the butcher shop? They've been consistently fantastic. Great service. Great product. Real expertise. We're lucky to have a place like this in town.

    It's a meat market for sure, but it's also a nice smallish grocery that serves the community. The…read morefocus is on meats, and they seem to offer for sale an excellent variety of meats -- nice looking steaks -- with mostly higher quality than we've found in area groceries. They have butchers who can cut the meats as you prefer, where in too-many chain groceries lots of the choices have already been sliced up. They have a nice selection of prepared sandwiches, and the aisles are stocked with just about everything you'd find at your local Stop and Shop, although their aisles are much close together. Prices? Not too different from a larger store, higher for some of the meat, but you're getting better cuts here, in our opinion. In sum, not for everybody maybe, but it's a well-run local shop and we like their offerings.

I called them right away to let them know and the owner (I presume) was very rude. He hung up on me twice!! And told me "whatever, I am very busy". I tried to explain to him that I don't live close by but I am an hour away. He mumbled some stuff and hung up on me. I called back to explain that I couldn't understand what he was saying and that's when he told me that he was too busy and hung up on me yet again. It's bad enough that you sell poisonous food to people but you are also rude. I don't not recommend this place!!!

It's probably the only real fish market in the area where you can pick from a dozen different kinds of whole fish. They offer squid, king crab, shellfish, and live lobsters and crabs, which is great. The fish always appear to be fresh. and they will clean them for you. I always grab some Snapper and crabs while im here! In regards to the other review on here that said something about them purchasing bad fish.. i cant speak for your experience, but you should know how to pick out a good fish at a fish market. And if you're driving over an hour home in the middle of the summer, make sure you're prepared to store it. Just an idea.
