They make your order fresh in front of you which I do like. However when they closed the container there's no holes or ventilation so everything fried gets soggy. Not crispy anymore! I ate at the dining table so I was able to open it quickly and the shrimp and fries were still crispy but my clam strips and fries were gross. Work on packaging then it would be would be better. read more

My Shrimp was lightly battered seasoned well. Just like I remembered it to be. The Clam Chowder was lack luster. To me it seemed to be pre made from a bag. The broth was on the beige/tan in color. I bought a pound of Cod yesterday and it was the freshest fish we have had in a long time. I let it soak in evaporated milk for about ten minutes then rolled it in a light coat of breadcrumbs and placed into a frying pan with a small amount of hot oil. I flipped it after 2 minutes and finished it off 2 minutes later. I made my own tartar sauce and a small salad on the side. It was VERY GOOD! I gave them 5 stars but it's only registering as 3.5. Absolutely horrible! Went for lunch Saturday with a craving for fish sandwich We ordered a fish sandwich, a clam strip roll, and a large chowder. Fish sandwich comes on a tiny bun making the fillet look larger but had no flavor at all even with 2 cups of Kens cheap tartar sauce couldn't help it.The clam strip roll wasn't any better it was mostly crumbs from clam strips. The "Famous chowder was a sludge of flower and water with mealy clams in it. I ended up throwing up our $42 meal about 2 hours after. Just got a hot lobster roll from City fish for takeout. Was the absolute worst lobster roll I ever had! The lobster meat did not taste fresh and it was stringy. The roll was soggy and the entire thing was tasteless. I tried eating just the lobster meat snd even that was awful. Threw it out. We went to City Fish yesterday to buy shrimp for a family gathering. The shrimp looked beautiful as usual and the service was excellent. While there we decided to get a couple orders of scallops and fries for lunch. Again, service in the kitchen was quick and friendly. Then the downfall. We ate in the dining room and to our dismay, FOX News was on the TV. Fortunately the sound was off so we didn't have to listen to right wing propaganda while trying to enjoy our meal. Public businesses should be void of politics. If the owners of City Fish choose to follow FOX and its ideology, more power to them but don't display your beliefs in your dining room. We'll think twice before we eat at City Fish again. read more

If you think somebody is pretending to be from Hartford County, casually slide them a pic of a Yellow City Fish Delivery truck and ask "you ever seen one of these before?" If they say "No", then they're BUSTED! Because those yellow trucks are making deliveries everywhere. Wethersfield-based City Fish is a seafood market and distributor, and it also has an area where they make (1) fried seafood like shrimp, fish, scallops, clam strips and whole bellies, (2) sandwiches such as lobster rolls, and (3) other food such as soups and crinkle cut fries. Living nearby, I've been to City Fish numerous time over the years, but I'm limiting this review to a recent lunch order. I will say if you live in the area and want high quality seafood for home cooking, I can't think of a place I'd rather go. I ordered a Fried Oyster "Po Boy". I probably wouldn't have called it a Po Boy since it lacked a crusty French bread and we're not near Louisiana, but it was a good sandwich. The oysters seemed fresh and they were tasty. The breading was decent. The bread was soft on the outside and grilled inside. The grilling was a nice touch. The sauce (meant to me Cajuny, I guess) was pretty good and the sandwich also had lettuce. I often enjoy City Fish's fries as a good change of pace. I don't know if this is true, but I've always assumed that they're cut in house because the cut thickness varies. My recent fries had a great texture and they were good. Four Stars read more

City Fish has been around for a long time. They have fresh fish and seafood in the market section and fried fish and seafood on the other side with a dining room attached. I didn't go into the dining room. We ordered fish nuggets and French fries from the cooked food side this trip and it was very good. The staff was friendly and helpful which was an improvement over our last trip. We took home some very red and delicious tuna from the market side and it was outstanding. The only problem I have is that the whole place is somewhat dark, worn out, and kind of gross feeling overall. I said it's been around a long time and a renovation is seriously needed. For 15 + yrs a dine in customer. Sad to report the quality is not what it used to be. Have no problem with price. As $$ increased the quality has decreased. Ordered scallops and fries for lunch. Size of scallops are now about 30% less and not as sweet. The quantity of fries is about 30% greater, way too many fries. Pretty much same issue with shrimp and fries. Smaller, less tasty with a batter that doesn't want to stick to the shrimp. Ambiance very nice read more

** Everything in my previous review still stands, this is an update specifically for the CT Lobster Roll based on the 9 locations I visited this past summer, 3 on the shoreline and 6 in the greater Hartford/central CT area. So with two different categories (location/area) City Fish landed the #4 of 9 spots I visited in the entire state and at #2 of 6 in the central CT area. They could have made #1 easily but I had to deduct a few overall points for a few things but overall this is a REALLY great lobster roll. The first of two things that I had to deduct them for is the roll (bread), which is one of the larger ones I've tried but it is a grinder-style roll versus a New England style hot dog or brioche bun. The second being the price, though the roll itself is around the mid-point, this is sold as a combo with a choice of small chowder, fries or coleslaw. The real winner in this CT Lobster Roll is the amount of meat you get, over 1/4 lb. of claw, knuckle and tail meat (avg 4 1/2 oz.) on an equal amount of roll for over a 1/2 lb. of sandwich. I have no doubt they are fresh here but the inclusion of the tail meat can sometimes change the texture of the roll, along with the different type of bread that it's served on. So while it's a little bit different than what you'd expect, it is a great value for what you get even if you don't want the included side. Five stars! read more

City Fish has been my go to any time I needed a fix of whole belly clams. I have never had a bad meal until today. Everyone knows that you can't overcook clams because they turn into little pieces of rubber. These were so overcooked they were no longer tender and most of them were inedible. I ended up throwing most of them away. For $24.99 I expect better. The three stars was because the clam chowder was good. read more

City Fish began for me in 1979! I worked a few doors away and was introduced to their fried lunches. Back then and at my late, "nothing can hurt me" teen age attitude, who was concerned? Despite this began a decades long patronage, but primarily at the Market's Fish counter. Having sampled nearly every option offered we've never been disappointed. Usually, for specials occasions the lobster, crab, various clams and mussels. Most other times a fresh, local fillet of fish. Red Snapper, Salmon, Monk, Cod to name a few. Brought home to grill on a well soaked cedar board, on the fry pan with olive or avocado oil, or simply steamed in the microwave with spices under a hood of stretch wrap. From my days of a greasy boxed lunch the Market has since expanded to include a Tavern and expanded options for a sit-down meal (& and draught). Nice touch. read more

You know the customer service is dismal so that's why it's not worth it to even bring them back. Belly Clams are made of rubber. Why would anyone want to pay $25.00 for rubber food????? and dried out french fries. I went there 10 years ago and it was good. If I want fish, I would have better luck at the freezer section at Stop & Shop. I think it would be fresher. You can't tell they are rubber from a photo. They smell good, and look good, but after chewing 25 times, I threw them out. I gave a few french fries to my 3 dogs, and threw them out too. read more

If I could give stars for only the restaurant it would have been 1 star. I was excited to have some whole belly clams while visiting New England. It was $26 for 7 oz, which I would have been fine with, but they were horrible. The coating was mushy and they were so greasy all I could taste was the oil, I ordered them to go so i ate 2 and had to throw the rest away. Also surprised they don't even make their own tarter sauce. So disappointed I will say the fish market part has lots of great fresh seafood options and the staff is very friendly. read more

Second time coming around wasn't as good as the first, the Cold Lobster Roll and Coleslaw looked better than it tasted. First time I came here I had the Fish and Chips and it was phenomenal. Lightly battered, was seasoned well, fries were good as well. Everything was quick and not over priced in my opinion. This time I tried the Cold Lobster Roll and Coleslaw for $25. This is on the pricey side so it needs to be really good. The lobster was nice and meaty I'll give them that, it's expensive because they give you chunky, meaty and quality lobster. I loved that. But there was a shell or skin of some sort in one bite, not a major issue but would be nice without it. One more thing I'd like to point out was how cold lobster rolls are supposed to be tasty. Yeah the lobster was great but this time around it was noticeably bland. The coleslaw couldn't save it either, not bad but super bland. Everything seemed like it needed a little more seasoning of some sort. Not everyone is perfect, might have been a bad batch and I got unlucky with the shell or something in my food but service was quick. I'll come here again soon as their other food is great but for now, I'll hold off on the Lobster Rolls here as at $25 it needs to be good. Not everyone in the world is rich.
