The decor was cute, but the place felt a bit grungy. The muselix (yogurt-fruit-granola) was dry and goopy, like it wasn't fresh anymore. Some of the egg dishes looked good though. The service was good, except that when I asked the server if their orange juice was fresh-squeezed, she said yes, then proceeded to pour it out of a store-bought plastic jug. With one sip I could tell it wasn't fresh-squeezed. Maybe she misheard me? Also, the coffee is not very strong, for those who prefer a heartier cup o' joe. Overall, just okay. Mmmm Toast is worth the sometimes very long wait on the weekends. If you can get out of the house early enough the wait isn't bad before 10. The eggs Benedict is so delicious, coffee is fantastic and the atmosphere is perfectly Ferndale. The prices are above diner breakfast but so is the quality so it's totally worth every penny. I went recently after not visiting for over a year and I swear the serving sizes have grown, even the people next to me commented on how huge my eggs benny was, so again, totally worth it. read more

Stopped in to Toast for breakfast after a friend recommended this spot and my boyfriend and I enjoyed our meals. The food was good but we were disappointed with the toast. For a restaurant named Toast, we had higher expectations. I ordered the apple one, which had an additional up-charge, and it was very dry/stale. The toast of the day was some sort of chocolate banana and it tasted more like a brownie than toast. The bacon friend rice was creative, but also dry. I ordered the 'beet goes on' omelette which was very good, but I was expecting nice red beets and I think they maybe used golden beets for this dish. I've never actually had a golden beet, so I am not really sure how it was supposed to taste. The potatoes were also a little spicy for my liking. My boyfriend had Chilaquiles Ala Maria and he said it was a little spicy but not overbearing and he really enjoyed it. The best breakfast after a night on the town! I really enjoy the atmosphere and the interior is so cool! The staff is always very attentive and quick to give you a refill on coffee or whatever. You really can't go wrong with anything that you order here. I highly recommend coming early for breakfast if you don't like crowds as it tends to get very busy quickly. This is the message I sent through FB, but have really heard nothing since being told that they would pass it along. We drove 45 minutes to give you a try today and no one ever picked up the phone to take an order and the online service first said you would not take any orders till 11:09 and so we waited till then and then it said it would not take any orders until 11:44. When we drove by there was not really anything going on, it did not look like you were getting slammed. It was beyond frustrating and not good customer care. We gave up on our $115 order and went to The Fly Trap which accommodated us immediately and our order was a success. Sadly, as good as your food looks, I wouldn't do that again. We were looking for a food adventure and the other place did not disappoint, but today's new joke around our home when something fails, is "it's Toast". Not good when your place becomes the latest joke. I hope I can save someone else the drive or if you do make the drive, let me recommend The Fly Trap. I really like this place. It's comfy when you walk in. The people that work their smile and are friendly. The menu is packed full of awesomely delicious items to choose from whether you like your breakfast sweet and sticky, hardy and full of meat, or light and healthy. My favorite thing to order is the french pressed coffee. I go with the french roast, but there are a few selections to choose from. I like it because I get to brew the coffee as dark as I like, and for me it just has a better flavor that regular pots of coffee. They always have interesting specials in addition to their large menu, and I've not been disappointed yet in anything I've ordered. The only complaint I could have is the last time I was there they were out of French Press pots. WEIRD! I'm sure they've fixed that by now. Toast is certainly a must do for anyone living or passing through Ferndale. read more

I took my Fiance there for his birthday. We had the best experience... The wait staff was amazing. Our waiter Dennis was really cool, he suggested some really good food, and made sure everything was good. Restaurant is super small, which contributes to most of my poor experience. Instead of a host/receptionist I was greeted with eyes by two waiting parties. As I waited inside the restaurant next to the black curtains that separated the lobby and the dining area, another party walked in and happened to greet the host and get on the waiting list. After discovering the host, I met him and got on the list, and he told me there "may or may not" be a wait as they often "squeeze" single parties in. Well I already felt squeezed due to the lack of space and wasn't okay with getting squeezed any further. The host didn't recommend a place to wait and there was not any system in place to alert waiting parties of when their table would be available. No text alert system, no device that rings when your table is ready, nothing to resemble dining in the year 2020. Just stand right on top of people eating their food in hopes that the host that didn't spot you walk in informs you when your table is ready...no thanks. read more

We were visiting from Ohio and my son Will suggested going to Toast as he knows I love breakfast. We have been there a half dozen times but the most recent breakfast I had - the Nova Scotia with hash browns (redskins) may very well be the best breakfast I have ever eaten at a restaurant. My wife had the same thing (she loved her meal too) and we each put half our breakfast in a to go box and had the rest for dinner! We had excellent service and even got to meet Betsy the Manager! Before we leave I have to go back for blueberry pancakes!! If you are worried about the wait go on a Monday morning around ten - we were able to sit at the counter without a wait! Every time I go to Toast, I feel like I'm missing something. It has countless rave reviews and is practically an institution in Ferndale. Though try as I might, every time I go I leave thinking "that could have had more flavor" or, "it sounded better than it tasted." It could be that I'm not ordering the right things, but a few misses: My vegetarian omelet lacked flavor but was swimming in watery mushroom juice, my veggie sandwich was a smear of goat cheese and a roasted veggie slapped on a piece of bread, and my friend's Toast burger (while still delicious) was overcooked. I might keep trying, but Toast happens to be so close to the pitch perfect Mae's and favorite brunch spot One Eyed Betty's that I haven't wanted to give it another go (not to mention that they're very busy and small). They're not hurting for business so I won't feel too bad. However, since most restaurants in the area are closed on Mondays, this is the day I'll probably be back. read more

Let's have a toast to Toast, for effort if not always for execution. Let me preface this by saying I've been to both ferndale and b'ham toast. I heard from the staff that the owner likes it this way with impossibly hard to get parking at both locations but I digress. The food is good, if you order correctly. For example, the 2 egg breakfast with home fries isn't anything to write home about but the Parisian Omelette will make you want to shout from rooftops, being so good with the chevre cheese. I even started eating grits (which I avoided since childhood, and my dad was southern) his parmesean grilled grits are just that good. The actual toast at toast is not quite as good, the jalapeños challah doesn't even hint at the inclusion of jalapeños. The banana coffee, fuget aboud it, I hate bananas even the smell of banana but was pleasantly surprised by the banana coffee not enough that I'd order it again but the one time was enjoyable. We had a really bad experience with this place. First, as we were walking into the place, one of the waitresses was leaving out the door and basically let it slam in our faces. Next, after walking in, we were rudely (and hurriedly) told to have a seat in the back and they will call us when a table was ready. A waitress (the same one who slammed the door in our faces) cleaned off a table where we sitting, but never acknowledged to us that it was open for us to sit at. After waiting a few more minutes, we stood up and began walking out of the place. While walking out, we heard the same waitress (who slammed the door and never acknowledged to us that the table was ready for us), say..."Were you waiting for a booth?" We continued to walk out (without acknowledging her). I think it's funny that they "tried" to talk to customers once they realized that they were walking out of the door due to poor customer service. We love to try new places and would truly pay more for great customer service. There are certain things some small businesses can't improve (building size, etc), however, customer service is something that should be held to the highest regards. Thanks to the poor customer experience at Toast, we found a great spot called the The Fly Trap (about 1.5 blocks south on Woodward on the same side of the street!). Went to Toast yesterday for the first time in a few years and man has it gone downhill. we waited about 20 minutes, which is fine but then we were seated at the counter. the counter's usually not that bad but the servers were using it for rolling silverware and doing side-work the whole time. the servers weren't exactly rude just disinterested. On the subject of food, I hate eggs so I've always gotten biscuits and gravy and they used to be excellent. Yesterday the biscuits were cold and tasted stale and the gravy was underdone. my lady friend got a veggie omelet which she said made her sick later in the day. My biscuits and gravy made me sick early last night. This place used to be great and I'm pretty sure it can be again. We had quite a long wait before we were seated (we ended up being seated outside) and a bit of a wait before our order was taken. The staff seemed nice but M.I.A. It was a reasonable wait for our food to arrive. Our waiter only came to check on us once after he had brought our food. When we were done eating a different waiter took our plates. A totally different person asked us if we wanted more water. We waited what felt like another 10 minutes and nobody brought is our bill. We had to ask the hostess ol about getting our bill. On our recent trip to Ann Arbor, we had planned to do a lot of shopping and eating. Our goal was to go to Great Lakes Crossing Outlet but we had to stop for food, considering it is a 2 hr drive from Ann Arbor. I came across Toast from fellow Yelpers, even though i couldnt find a posted menu, i had faith this place was going to be great. We walked in and were greeted with a warm welcome and were seated immediately. We both had the classic breakfast, except i ordered mine with the fried cheese grits and my sis with the potatoes. The bacon that they serve is out of this world, i assume it is sugar cured because it was slightly sweet, and when i say perfectly cooked, i truly mean it. The potatoes were good, but the real star were the fried cheese grits. I was worried that they were going to be like a fried risotto ball however they were creamy grits with a light crust on one side with melted cheese on top. It is also refreshing to have unique toast options like their cinnamon raisin, and cheddar jalapeno without the additional cost of a specialty bread. This was probably the best breakfast that i have had since i was in LA last summer, i cant wait to try their other location on my next trip. read more

My expectations were pretty high for this place as I'd heard a great deal about how delicious the food was from friends. They totally smashed it out of the park this morning though on my first trip. I ordered the two egg breakfast with sausage links, home fries, rye toast, and scramble. I scoffed a little bit at the $14 price, but there was A LOT of food for that price and they will give you as many coffees as you wish. These were by far the best home fries I've ever had. Seasoning was on point, and crispy yet soft inside. I was impressed . Eggs were also delicious. The jams offered for toast were extraordinary as well. Very little complaints if any. Nice and attentive service, good coffee, and the wait of "20-25 minutes" at the door wound up being around 5 in actuality. I used to love coming to toast about 8 years ago, and I have been going back ever since every time I was in town. Problem, every time it seemed to go down hill. I had a couple really bad experiences here and it's sad to say it. The waitstaff was always really awesome. I ordered a huevos, and if you have ever had a real good huevos, you know that this is not what they are supposed to be like. Sad little huevos with very little beans and mostly fried-ness and cheese. It was gross. We ordered a waffle for dessert, and it was literally bad. The batter had soured and we ate a disgusting sour waffle. Ruined it for me. We haven't been able to go back since. read more
