It was my birthday and a Sunday, so perfect opportunity to have brunch. I wanted something different and interesting but several of my options were unavailable due to Sandy 'tripping the lights'. Plus, we had gas rations so we didn't want to drive too far. I turned to my fellow yelpers and came across this place. When we arrived at 9.30am we were a little shocked how busy Toast was - disappointing but always a good sign. We put down on our name, was told it would be a 15 minute wait and waited only 5! Despite it being busy, the service was efficient. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and really good (we tipped her generously). I eat pretty well most of the time so for my birthday I needed a naughty: 2 lovely cappuccinos, french toast with strawberries, nuts and butter....yum, yum, yum. I have been for brunch several times and my opinion is that the restaurant is consistently mediocre, but if you keep it simple, don't wait forever and order correctly you will leave satisfied. I like the variety of pancakes although two out of the three times ordered they were over cooked, it was like I ordered blackened pancakes. The cappuccinos are heavy on the milk, light on the coffee, so I switched to the coffee which is just okay. The thing that leaves me scratching my head about Toast is the second floor, no really..the floor. The carpet is pretty dirty (stained and food crumbs galore) and old. I was seated there once and came right back downstairs and walked out. Really? Get rid of the nasty carpet. For a restaurant that turns tables so quickly, serves syrup and sees its share of children they really have no business having carpet in the first place. Overall, no desire to return. read more

I went here with a friend of mine on Saturday around 1, mostly because she had heard so much about Toast and was hoping to try it. She said we might not be able to get a table without an hour and a half wait, but to our pleasant surprise, we were seated upstairs within 10 minutes of arriving. The text when your table is ready is pretty nice. Our waitress was prompt, polite, and unobtrusive, which for me, is perfect. We ordered two mugs of hot cider with whipped cream on top to start, and it was delicious. To try a little bit of everything, we ordered the California Scramble (omlette with grape tomatoes, avocado, Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream, and homemmade salsa, with a side of home fries and toast) and the Bananas Foster French Toast (challah french toast with bananas foster sauce and chopped pecans). The California Scramble was good, with fresh ingredients and well-cooked eggs. The home fries were not overly salty as is so often the case. The Bananas Foster French Toast was excellent, with two huge pieces of challah french toast, deliciously sweet bananas foster syrup, and a heaping of huge pecans. I would gladly get both again. I think I would return to Toast, but I feel it was overhyped. The prices and food were good, but not exceptional. Nothing really stood out to me in terms of food, decor, service, or price, but sometimes a solid quality breakfast is all you want, and Toast delivered. read more

Soooo good! I love tuna, but it has to be seared perfectly or it just doesn't taste the same. I've had it there multiple times and it is always spot on! I enjoy toast. The staff seems friendly, and the food is pretty good too. Certain items on the menu, come with an additional wait. The waiter/waitress usually gives you the heads up so that you can choose another item if you'd like. Overall, the wait to get in is the biggest issue. This isn't the largest place by far, meanwhile they are usually packed. I'd expect expansion but thus far, nothing. That being said, they send you a text message when your table is ready, which at least allows you to walk around the area instead of standing and waiting, or even waiting in your car. read more

What a disappointment. The coffee was hot, that's the only good thing I can say. I ordered eggs and their homemade corned beef hash. Ordered the eggs over medium and they were soggy with runny whites-- blech. The homemade corned beef hash was disgusting-- big cubes of grisly, fatty corned beef and tiny, oily cubes of soggy potato. I've never had worse corned beef hash in my life-- this was worse than the canned stuff. My english muffin was a soggy mess-- it looked and tasted like it was microwaved, not toasted. Basically it was an overpriced plate of slop. Also, our waitress was a flake-- we had to ask her to take our order, ask for jelly for our toast, our ketchup bottle was empty, and she forgot we were drinking decaf, not regular. I don't know how this place survives except that it's cute and it's in downtown Montclair. read more

Well, there are so few places to eat when you have to eat gluten-free, and they have excellent gluten free waffles and pancakes here. They are also very knowledgeable about cross-contamination, which for me means that the service was attentive. All of my gluten eating friends also enjoyed it, so now it's my go to place for brunch! Nice staff short wait but the toast is not very good

Came in at around 1:30 on a Thursday and it was relatively mellow. We got seated right away which was awesome. Waitress was bugging us every (literally) 2 minutes for our order like she was in a hurry. I ordered the Cuban and it was the soggiest sandwich I've ever taken a bite out of. Waitress never checked on us so I politely asked the busboy to bring her over so I can get it fixed. Ended up switching my order to a lobster roll which was ALSO soggy. Once again waitress never checked up on our table, only rush us out and give us the bill and to take our order. Not to mention, she wasn't very pleasant about either. Used to come here frequently, but after this experience it's safe to say that it's my last. read more

I met a friend here for brunch on a Sunday. We got there close to closing so we didn't have to wait long for a table. We were seated upstairs which was nice because there was less people and it was a bit quieter. Overall, I will say this was an OK meal. The food was good and was served quickly, but little things made it not great. For example, when they brought our coffee and tea, they didn't bring spoons, or any silverware for that matter. When they brought our food, still didn't bring silverware. We had to ask another wait staff for silverware, which didn't include spoons. They asked if we wanted refills. My friend got more coffee and I asked for more tea. The waitress told me if I wanted another tea bag it would be another $2. Seriously? I know that you can buy a box of 100 Lipton tea bags for $3.50 and you are charging me $2/tea bag. There was no extra charge for my friend's coffee. I don't know if I would go back there again, when it seems like there are other good places in the area. Again, it really is the little things that can make or break your experience. read more

Very nice service, laid-back and casual place. Huevos rancheros were different and tasty; the rye toast was super good (not the typical sliced bread toast but they were slices from a real loaf of bread if that makes any sense). Great coffee, good pancakes too. Only downside is that there is no waiting area inside so you have to wait outside. read more

The best place for brunch!! The food here is always great and spot on. There will be a long wait for this restaurant. It is very popular and busy, but it is worth the 20 minute wait. My wife and I have been going to Toast since my son was 1 (he's 4 years old now). I've got the say, the service has always been fantastic and the food, consistently impeccable. Its not the largest menu in the world, but this place has become the meter against which we judge other breakfast/brunch places. The environment is nice and homey, the breakfast breads with butter and jam always hit the right spot. My wife's favorite is the Tuscan scramble and the red velvet pancakes with a sweet cream cheese spread which is to die for. My favorites have been the bananas foster french toast. I like to change up the omelette order because they're all SOO GOOD. We keep going back and plan to keep coming back. read more

Was too excited that I was going to Toast. Went yesterday (Saturday) for brunch. Waited about 25-30 mins to be seated (Toast will text you when your table is ready). Once seated our waiter (Demetrios) greeted us immediately; he was awesome. He was very attentive, knowledgeable, & had a great sense of humor. However I didn't see what the big hype was about this place. And for $60 (for 2 people: pancakes, french toast, bacon & eggs + tip) I could have gotten the same taste at ihop for half the price. heard great things about this place...but save your time and $$$! we put our name in and was told less than 5 min wait, but people arriving after us get seated before us...we addressed this with the host and he apologized and quickly seated us. the waitress was stoned and her own world because it took 10+mins just to get some coffee...our order was belgium waffle with strawberries (one strawberry cut in as many slices as humanly possible) & a side of bacon, and the california scamble....20mins later the luke warm food arrived on very hot plates, sans bacon. waitress goes for a 2nd smoke or snort, and arrives much later when we ask for the bacon - voila it appears in less than 30 seconds. so as someone else already wrote, it is not make to order - they literally keep the plates in a hot oven and throw the luke warm boring food on a hot plate. strongly advise to stay far away! read more

Visited Toast on Sunday for brunch. The wait to get a seat for two was ridiculous!!! The meal was horrendous..the food was very cold, tasteless, and service was unacceptable. My boyfriend had the Challah french toast, scrambled eggs and turkey bacon. The french toast was cold and had lacked the cinnamon flavor that you would expect, the scambled eggs were cold and tasted like egg beaters and the turkey bacon taste like butterball turkey bacon!!!! HORRIBLE!!! I had the crab and asparagus omelette, needless to say my omelette was PIPING COLD and tasteless, not even salt & pepper to taste. We go here pretty often though I wouldn't say the food is that consistently great. The one exception would be the breakfast potatoes, which are pretty terrific. Other than that, if I'm being honest, it's nothing special. The servers, however, are very friendly and nice. Another issue I have with this place is that the other diners are so often loud and pretty obnoxious. On numerous occasions we've had to deal with parents who lack the ability to control their wild children and loud talkers who can't take a hint. Just had brunch there and it was a great experience. The wait was long, but I was impressed that they took our information on a iPad and then used that to send us a text message on our cell when the table was ready. We decided to stay simple and stuck with the eggs, but it was delicious. The pork sausages were so soft and the grilled cinnamon buns were amazing and so much better than what I usually get at other places. All in all, it was a good brunch, and the overall atmosphere and crowd was very relaxing and homey. Came here on Father's Day. Was told wait would be 20 minutes and ended up being an hour. When went to check on how much longer wait would be, host was rude and not at all apologetic. Service inside was also terrible and food just was not good. Nutella french toast tasted stale, omelettes came out with wrong ingredients and pancakes were nothing special. This is a great place to go for brunch on the weekend. The menu has your typical brunch options, while including whole grain and gluten free options (which I love). The whole grain Belgian waffle is outstanding! Toast is BYOB so you can bring what ever liquor or champaign for you breakfast cocktail of choice. The only downfall of Toast is the ridiculous wait time. My friends and I arrived around 1 on a Sunday afternoon and waited close to an hour to be seated. Toast does ask for your cellphone number and will text you when your table is ready, which is convenient if you choose to walk around Montclair while you wait. Overall, Toast offers a great brunch, but the wait makes you question if it is worth it. read more

I've been here with friends and also with just my boyfriend and both times the food has been amazing. On top of great food, the prices are more than reasonable and the staff is very friendly and incredibly accommodating. The line can get long sometimes on the weekends, but thanks to their great system, you can go do some shopping or something and they text you when you're table is ready. I love this place! My boyfriend and I are here at least once a week, sometimes more. The food is consistently great, but the staff is what really makes the experience so awesome. We're on a first name-basis with many of them - shout outs to Heidi, Ariel, Kim, and Megan just off the top of my head- but really just about everyone we've interacted with has been friendly, attentive, & all-around wonderful. I've actually gotten to the point where I comment on mediocre or poor service in other establishments by simply saying, "they clearly don't work at toast." ;p Seriously though, you guys rock! read more
