Sometimes a combination of two things becomes more than just the sum of its parts. 15East at Tocqueville is one such example. The menu is a well crafted combination of Japanese and French inspired cuisine with a delicate balance of flavors and fresh ingredients. Decor was lovely and you can see the effort put in here to make a cozy environment even amongst the chill. We had: 1) the uni carbonara + seared foie gras to start 2) duck duck duck soba (amazing in this weather) 3) scalloped potato topped trout 4) smoked duck 5) tofu, Fuji apple and lava cake desserts 6) two pieces of Botan Ebi (why not) Highlights here was the smoked duck, amazingly balanced dish with good use of acid to cut through the well rendered duck fat. Came for my grandma's 90th and had a private room. It was an appetizer, main course, and cake at the end with some little bites included. I got the uni pasta which I thought was excellent. A really good pairing. And then for my main, I got the wagyu steak and short rib. The wagyu was a tad bit overcooked, but still melted in your mouth. The short rib was delicious. The little bits in between were creative. Lastly, while the cake wasn't my favorite flavor, I thought it was tasty and moist. The service was very attentive, especially given how large our party was. I went to Tocqueville for dinner on September 9th. I have to say it was the most terrible dinner experience I ever had. We arrived at 6pm and spent almost 4.5 hours for 7 courses chef tasteing menu. The EACH waiting time between last 4 courses is more than half hour! That was too ridiculous! We spent less than 1 hour to eat, more than 3.5 hours for waiting. I ask the server what happened, and they said nothing. There is no explanation and apologies! I emailed the restaurant about my experience but no one reply! Foods are just ok. No signal at dinner room. I will never come back again and won't recommend to anyone! read more

BUT nothing was filling and we felt a bit cheated with the price, as we were forced to order a lot in order to feel full. I found the food very unique and appealing, and the occasion was my birthday, so it was nice when the waiters brought out a dessert at the end. For a fancy restaurant, the set up was not ideal. My family of four was squished at a small square table near the wall and too close to the table next to us. Made reservations for lunch on a Saturday with my family and upon walking in, we were greeted by the hostess. There is a cute bar to your left and the dining area is a tucked in the back. It is definitely a very intimate setting. When were seated we received complimentary hors d'oeuvre courtesy of the chef. I loved the ambiance and how the dishes were plated. It was definitely upscale and matched its price point. We ordered the sea urchin carbonara which was a little on the heavier side for its portion. The aged carnaroli risotto acquerello was perfect! I loved the mushroom and the entire dish in itself - I wish I had more. The truffled creamy parmesan grits looked interesting - I didn't try it since it isn't my usual cup of tea. The oysters and the mignonette was super fresh and absolutely delicious - definitely a must try! As for our entrée - since I love scallops, I ordered the seared day boat scallops and hudson valley foie gras. AMAZING. I would go back just for this dish. So fresh and so good. Portion was rather small but definitely delicious. There was also the duck sausage, sea trout, filet mignon and duck breast. The duck breast was very good however if you are hungry I would stay away from the sausage since it was also very very small. I have to say the scallops and foie gras, duck breast and the filet mignon were my top 3 choices. As for dessert, the chef sent out complimentary house-made sorbets to apologize for the delay in-between our meals which we gladly enjoyed. Each flavor was very distinct in its own way. We went for lunch and had the tasting menu which was a wonderful way to experience the beauty of Tocqueville. Started with serval Amuse Bouche tastes and then the Salmon Tartare which was truly one of the best ever had. Then the noted sea urchin and angel hair pasta was truly memorable. Then the duck breast which was perfectly lightly smoked. I did the wine pairing and the selections were spot on. The wine complemented every dish perfectly. Yes, food here is expensive, but extremely delicious. The chef kept sending some complimentary hors d oeuvres while working on my order, which included a daily special appetizer which was seafood based ($20) and my entree which was Sriracha Marinated Grilled Filet Mignon ($44). It's one thing to make edo-Mae size, well, edo mae size, which is smaller than your average takeout sushi . It's another to serve nigiri the size of small lego block . Especially when the neta (fish component) is chu-toro. The chutoro piece (it should be addressed "speck") was basically an akami, lacking fat. Wine by glass ( $19-24) were all unmemorable table wine of sorts. The French dishes linger in the limbo between modern and traditional. For the price, one would expect unexpected twists in dishes (ie Racines). Or ducks from premier purveyors. Their dishes are something you expect at bistros, but lacking the heartiness found at Balthazar and Julien. The plating is slightly swankier than your average bistro. . Took my parents here for their $70 lunch 5 course tasting menu and it was real good. Maybe a little heavy handed in the sea-food department but I liked it way better than the tasting menu at Le Bernardin. The last dish we had, the duck, was probably the best duck I've ever had. Really great slice of meat. Bread selection was also delicious, they had 3 types. Meal included 2 or 3 extra dishes/appetizers complimentary of the chef which made the experience even sweeter. All the 5 star reviews on here is CAP & straight LIES. If you gave this place a 5-star, you CLEARLY have not had REAL QUALITY FOOD in general then. I don't usually write essays as reviews but this has got to be the WORST and most expensive meal I've experienced. I told my s/o we would've been better off at an $85 omakase in LES than spend $700 here. Came here on Valentine's Day for 6 prix fixe course $255/pp. 9:30pm resy. Debated between omakase tasting & prix fixe - eventually went with prix fixe because I have omakase at least once a week already. (Just putting into perspective & credibility purposes) We got seated. Completely ignored. Yes it's busy, yes it's a holiday so I let it slide. I'll be patient. But then, another table of 2 gets seated about 5-10 minutes after us. Immediately received water & menu. I was a bit thrown off, trying to convince myself they will come to our table next. Nope, ignored again. I eventually call a waiter over and ASKED for the menu. Finally picked our dishes. FOOD ARRIVAL 1st - we both had the oysters. As you can see on the menu which I've attached in the photos, it states 4..4!! PEICES. If you swipe to the next photo after the menu, we were only served 3 oysters. I was thinking maybe they've changed their menu for tonight without telling us; I asked our waiter what 3 instead of 4 oysters meant and she explained she wasn't aware of the menu being four oysters and apologized. Brought out the fourth one separately. I started looking at others, they also received 3 after I brought it to their attention. RED FLAG. Remember $255/pp. i taste oysters, they are FISHY. I am a seafood feen, connoisseur, daughter of a fisherman and supermarket owner. I KNOW what good oysters are. These were most likely dollar oysters. 3/10 2nd - we both got the Sea Urchin Carbonara 5/10 Pasta was cooked to perfection. Chewy bouncy YUM. Sea urchin aka uni was pretty decent. 3 pieces only though. Pasta sauce very heavy on the butter & cream, not a lot of flavor. TINY portion. Remember again, $255/pp. 3rd - truffle grits 6/10 and foie gras pudding 6/10 The grits - texture was good, taste/truffle was hinted, Parmesan overload tho. Foie gras pudding - SALTY. So freaking salty it's like eating the egg pudding you get at omakase and instead of using kombu for umami flavor, they used watered down eel sauce and drowned the pudding in it. Texture was perfect though. Creamy. 4th - sea bass & caviar 6/10 and maine lobster 6/10 Sea bass was fresh, cooked perfectly, light & flaky. Caviar was delish. The sauce KILLED the dish. Murdered it. The sauce had such a thick cream and cheese taste, it drowned out the freshness of the bass. Maine lobster was very delish however it was the portion size of 2 bites (if you're a little person). Reminder, $255/pp. it came with what looked like scallop but nope, it was very salty mushy radish.. I think. 5th - we both got short rib and wagyu 4/10 Short rib BEYOND SALTY Wagyu 2 BITES. Again, $258/pp. At this point, I was crying because the meal is over and it's 12AM and dessert has YET to be served. Who the heck finishes dinner at 12AM at a restaurant? Last - chocolate flourless cake & we received a complimentary raspberry napoleon..which wasn't really napoleon considering it was just a layer of dehydrated raspberry which had NO flavor and fresh raspberry with flavorless cream sandwiched in between layers w/ some type of alcoholic sorbet. 3/10. Service was good, our waiter did listen and accommodate us to the best of her abilities but this just is NOT right. It might sound like I'm just upset about a $700 meal but listen, I DIDNT PAY AT ALL AND IM STILL RANTING. Each in between course was a wait time of about 10-15 minutes which is absurd. It's so dim to the point where your eyes have to bulge open to SEE what you're looking at. Everyone is stuffed next to each other. I had heard the whole argument between a couple seated next to us. Water wouldn't be poured, asked to fill about 3 times since they didn't leave our bottle of still w/ us. Don't. Come. Here. Save your coins. I came here for a private group dinner and sat upstairs. What I could see of the ambiance was that it was beautiful with incredible light ornaments and chandeliers. The room upstairs was similarly spectacularly adorned but much more intimate. I opted for the white wine, which was fragrant and buttery. We started with a delicious kalamata olive bread that was very very good. Probably one of the best breads I've ever eaten. It was warm, rich, and soft and surprisingly buttery independent of any butter. I ordered the beet and goat cheese salad as my appetizer, which was brilliantly colored and was very rich. The richness of the goat cheese complemented the tart, sweetness of the beets. Second course was the sea bass which was presented beautifully and had intense yet delicate flavors. The sea bass was on a green foam of jalepeno essence that was gorgeous to see, especially with the contrasting bright, fresh green and the white, smooth sea bass. I ordered the chocolate bon bon for dessert which was deep, rich, and had great mouth feel. It melted in my mouth as I ate it. The gold flecked drops along the plate was also a visually appealing touch. We were presented these amazing pate a choux dessert bombs which were the highlight of the incredible meal. Had a girls night out with old/new friends. The person that chose the place did not realize how fancy this place was, but we had a great time. It is a bit on the pricey side, but I am not made about it. We were talking about how we started new jobs, I became an Elite member (not to boast), and we were happily single and drama free. Well... there is always drama. I had the sea urchin pasta as my entree and OH MY GOSH! Sorry Basta Pasta, but you met your match! It wasn't enough to be an entree, but oh gosh it was so good. The drinks were delicious, service was a million stars, and the little appetizer and desserts were delicious. When we were stuffed and ready to check out, the waiter brought us a thing of ice cream and chocolate souffle because he overheard our happy news. I thought the girls planned something for me, but it was just the waiter being so thoughtful. I honestly cannot stop talking about how great this place was. Our bill did come out to be quite a bit, but hey, it was pay day, it was Galentine's day, and I got a bonus at work. Why not spoil yourself once in a while. Date night, friend night, solo night. Second, the quality and presentation of your dishes have become on par with the finest eateries in town. What a stark contrast from the mediocre and forgettable dishes I had during restaurant week nearly a decade ago. Third, it amazed me how a successful job your team of three staffs did on effortlessly delivering exemplary service to six tables of patrons on this Sunday evening. Now, let's talk about how your delectable dishes have enchanted us on this evening. I am a huge fan of foie gras (Who isn't anyway?) So we decided to order both dishes that feature foie gras. For appetizer, the chef kindly split the pistachio-crusted foie gras into two dishes to make it convenient for us to share the enjoyment of the dish without having to reach over each other. Huckleberries offer the contrast in taste while the poached pear gave a firm contrast to the soft but not overly rich foie gras, all spread on top of brioche toasts. For the next thirty minutes, we were in pure foie gras bliss. My companion ordered the popular scallops with foie gras dish for entrée. Those three scallops, almost the size of Olympic medals, offered the gentle sweetness to balance the richness from the pan-seared foie gras. What a great way to let the ingredients shine! For my entrée, I opted for your evening's special, the lamb chops with red-wine braised lamb shank sitting on top of roasted brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. The chops were cooked to medium and were quite flavorful. However, the lamb shank was a bit under-seasoned for me, as the red wine flavor didn't come through as expected. When it was dessert time, we ordered another special of the evening - your Grand Marnier soufflé with walnut ice cream. To make our evening even better, the chef offered a complimentary birthday dessert to my friend - a berry tart topped with ice cream. The soufflé transcended above any other soufflés I have ever had; each bite of its moist and fluffy interior eventually left a taste of orange liqueur that lingers on my tongue. At $18, it certainly was the most expensive dessert I have ever ordered; however, it was also one that left a remarkable impression. Our delightful meal began with an amuse bouche of cauliflower terrine with endive and lemon salad to showcase your chef's creativity. At the meal's conclusion, we were presented with petit fours that reflected the sophistication of your establishment. Our petit fours actually consisted of five different sweets including: two pieces of macarons, a pecan bar, a chocolate-covered crispy rice ball, and two different chocolate truffles with wine-infused ganache. It was a chilly spring afternoon. The near empty dining room was quiet. Maybe two couples on opposite sides of the room, in tee shirts and sneakers. The dining room exuding this calm, non ostentatious elegance. We opted for 5 course tasting menu with shared wine paring. The staff were perfect in their care. Hovering out of my awareness, they monitored our happiness state and content with the food. Quick to educate, and serve, the sommelier was knowledgable and approachable. I really appreciate a restaurant that monitors the party without being intrusive. The highlights of the meal were the Gruyere Cheese Puffs, toasted brioche, Uni carbonara with sea lettuce and the chocolate soufflé with basil green tea ice cream. The wine pairing was amazing. Some of the best wine that I have had with a meal. The cheese puffs were served warm were fluffy and cheesy. Fun to pop in your mouth. Toasted brioche came with the foie gras. Love the buttery brioche with the fatty salted foie gras. Uni pasta was orangish, buttery, topped with oceanic-uni and great with the slight crunch of sea lettuce. Perfect tiny chocolate soufflé served hot out of the oven. (Watch your fingers!) I love the top crust and the soft innards of a soufflé. What made this soufflé infinitely better was the tinge of basil in the ice cream. And I discovered that I cannot handle so much buttery rich food in one sitting. The foie gras almost overloaded my palate. And I should not have tasted each of the breads that was offered to me (sour dough, brioche, rosemary focaccia with olives). A really nice upscale restaurant in New York. There's a modest entrance when you walk in and then they lead you to the dining room inside which has an incredible high ceiling. They have a lot of good cocktail options and also a great wine list. My sister ordered their version of a hot toddy cocktail. It was delicious but was served in a wine glass which I thought was a bit awkward for a hot beverage. We tried a lot of the food including the foie gras, uni carbonara, Arctic char tartare, wild sea bass, and mushroom risotto. The uni carbonara was one of the stand outs, it was extremely delicate, smooth and creamy tasting. I also really enjoyed the tartare, which was a special menu item that night. The sea bass and risotto made delicious entrees. The sea bass' accompaniments were perfect and the risotto was exactly the right consistency, not gluey at all. My least favorite was probably the foie gras, it wasn't as creamy or rich as I would've liked it. They also served us a few free tastings in between. We got an elevated version of a deviled egg as an amuse bouche that was absolutely delicious. At the end of the night they also gave us a small dessert platter with truffles, cream puffs, homemade rice krispies and more. It was truly a pleasant, enjoyable dining experience here! read more

We had reservations for Monday lunch right before my flight back to Cali and I'm so glad I went there!! We had the foie gras and scallop. The foie gras was super moist and buttery tasting. Scallop was perfectly cooked. Everything just melted in your mouth. My stomach just growled thinking about it... Also had uni pasta... I'm a huge fan of uni... the cream sauce just totally offset it. it was so delicious. I'm sure it's not healthy for you... but it was damn good! worth the extra calories... Regardless, this is one of the restaurants I have wanted to try in Manhattan. Thanks to Restaurant Week, I don't need to break a bank doing so. I think the favorite dish for me is my monk fish and my boyfriend's lamb ravioli. The monk fish is grilled and it is so tender that it tastes like chicken thigh. The lamb ravioli is also very interesting too. It is actually one giant ravioli with lamb and cheese inside. Their Facacchia bread is amazing with olives and sun dried tomato inside. But I don't like the fact that they only give you one one at a time. I really like the dessert here as well. We came here for a friend's birthday party and a dinner for 5 costs us quite a bit, as expected. However, the table enjoyed the appetizers more than the main dishes. We had 2 dishes to start and both were wonderful: WILD MUSHROOM RISOTTO was as risotto should be, rich and unctuous. GRILLED SPANISH OCTOPUS was soft and juicy and quite delectable. I had the butter poached lobster, while the protein was nicely cooked, the sauce was so pungent, with coconut and kaffir lime, it really threw me off as it tasted (to me) exactly like the massaman curry in my local thai place. 2 people at the table had SEARED DIVER SEA SCALLOPS AND HUDSON VALLEY FOIE GRAS, which was overly rich, overly salty but the scallops were not very flavorful, surprising since I love scallops. whevever in doubt, I go for the seared scallops dish. We also had SEARED PRIME AGED SIRLOIN OF BEEF AND BRAISED BEEF CHEEKS, which was a good dish but somehow didn't dazzle. Another point I have to make is everything was accompanied by mushrooms. Starting with the amuse bouche, which had mushroom foam, every dish had mushrooms. I like mushrooms a lot but wanted more variety of side vegetables. My lobster was supposed to have cabbage and other greens, I couldn't find any... Wine list is impressive but expensive. We will most likely be back but for the value, not too soon :-) read more

Faulty towers like experience with the tasting menu. It has, thankfully, provided us with a slew of new material and funny stories to tell people. The texture of foie gras sushi is 'memorable'. This place opened up three weeks ago. We reserved a table for 4 for outdoor dining, but it was freezing that evening, so the hostess was kind enough to accommodate us a table indoors. Hostess said we had a two hour limit but they didn't kick us out after 2 hours, so lucky us. We all had tasting menus - three of us wanted the 6-course and one the 5-course. Apparently, the server said they didn't allow one person to choose a different menu than the rest of us. However, the server checked with the chef and they were fine with it. Lucky us. They brought me a wrong dish, so they had to remake it and that took some time, but they let us keep the wrong dish they sent to our table. Extra free food, which was nice of them. Lucky us. We ordered sake for our table. The gentleman who helped us pick out a bottle that was under $125 (as per our request) was so polite and nice about it (many bottles were $200+). Serving staff was kind of disorganized but food was delicious. Not bad for three weeks in, despite covid. Hope this places survives; I would return. read more

This is a review for their 15 east @ Tocqueville setup for COVID. It was a Terrible experience! Service was extremely slow and sloppy. 1hr 20min from sitting down to getting first course. The actual table was sticky. Waiters never knew whose plates were whose, asking like at a diner and passing plates over people. The food was mediocre to bad. Servings were small. Sushi was on warm side of room temp and didn't taste up to par (especially for price). Nuts in my beet salad were rancid. Overall an extremely expensive meal for a horrible experience. One of our worst meals ever! Some of these issues may have been excused at a much lesser restaurant. But for its pretense and prices not acceptable, even under COVID. Don't fall for the nice outdoor setting. There are many more worthy restaurants doing a great job under any conditions. read more

Recently had a family gathering of 22 people in the private room. The group consisted of grandchildren, children and grandparents, all with differing expectations. The food was exquisite, the service helpful- and friendly -and the room very comfortable. Such a good time was had that all talked about the meal for days. What a pleasant treat. read more

If I could solely write this review based on the food I would give it a 10/10. But unfortunately I do feel obliged to mention the lack of service (especially now noticing that other people mentioned it too), as it seems they haven't fixed this problem. From the time we sat down to getting our drinks and then waiting to receive our food menus, this all took around half an hour. It took way too long to receive our food menus. Drinks took a while too when the restaurant was not busy. Was confused as to who our server was, as we had one person approach us in the beginning, and then had someone else take over after. (Lack of communication). Bread is delicious and so is the butter. You have option of whole wheat (my fav), focaccia, and sourdough. Loved the crunchy crust on sourdough and soft bread. We did the 8 course tasting, which ended up taking a total of 3 hours. If service were more efficient, I definitely think it could've been done in less time. Standouts: Egg and grits. Amazing delicious so flavorful with truffle oil I believe Steak "frites" very upscale version of this. Best French fries I've ever had. Steak is very high quality and cooked deliciously with their sriracha marinade. Sea bass was so moist and yummy not dry at all. Their veggie salsa that comes on top is the best "salsa" I've ever had. Love the interior and the ambience; it doesn't feel too stuffy like how I felt at the Modern or Gabriel Kreuther (not that there was anything wrong with that). It's dark and intimate, also not that big. I saw that there was an upstairs that looked like a reserved private dining area. There's a bar as you walk towards the dining room. I like that they offer a la carte as well as the tasting menu. I'd come back.. hoping their service gets a tad quicker! read more

Best dining experience I've ever had (and this includes the Michelin star restaurants and popular foodie hotspots I've frequented in NYC and Paris). I almost don't want to write this review in order to keep this secret to myself and the others who've dined here. It was easy to make a reservation the day before. We had a hiccup when the hostess couldn't find our reservation, but it wasn't a problem seating us. We had a $68 5 course tasting menu which was worth over $150. This is an incredible offer, almost unconscionable. The meal lasted 2.5 hours as I had anticipated. Unlike any other tasting menu I've ever had, the chef will accommodate your request for a few dishes you really want to try. I requested the uni carbonara and smoked duck breast. My fiance asked for the truffle grits and scallops with foie gras. I'm shocked (but very appreciative) that there was no surcharge for these popular signature items. After a lukewarm meal at a very highly rated restaurant a few weeks ago, I kept my expectations low. But when our server Miguel started us off with the best brioche and foccacia we've ever had, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Both straight out of the oven, the brioche was buttery and flaky while the foccacia was deliciously crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. First we received a few complimentary amuse bouches including: Beet cannoli with goat cheese: This was genius. I loved the infusion of lemon in the goat cheese. The beet was thinly sliced, crispy, and sweetly caramelized. Cheese puffs: We were given a bucket of these wonderful things but only had one each to save room for what was to come. Potato croquette with truffle shavings: This was heaven in my mouth. Chilled artichoke soup: The fiance loved this more than I did. A small bite of tomato caprese salad First course: Foie gras with strawberries and toasted brioche: Again, genius. Incredible presentation. I never expected a terrine of foie gras to pair so well with strawberry. It was thoughtful of the chef to notice from our initial request that we were lovers of foie gras. Yellowtail sashimi: This dish was good, but cannot compete with the foie gras. Second course: Truffled parmesan grits with araucana egg and veal bacon: I agree with other reviewers that this is one of the best dishes. I couldn't decide if I loved this more than the uni pasta. Uni carbonara. Rich and delicious. Extremely generous portion of uni. I prefer Tocqueville's uni pasta over Marea (tomato based with indistinct uni), Basta Pasta (a real disappointment), and Dieci (light and buttery). This is the best uni pasta I've had so far. Even the addition of seaweed was genius. Third course: Scallops and foie gras: Perfection. I could drink the cider vinegar gastrique - it was so delicious. Steamed black bass: This was the only dish that I found good but did not love. The dish was mild in flavor. The bass was a little on the drier side of the moist spectrum. Fourth course: Roasted lamb loin and braised shoulder: Best lamb dish I've ever had, perfectly cooked to medium rare. Not gamey in the slightest. The presentation was beautiful, earthy, and rustic. The lamb bacon was a delightful touch. I appreciated that this dish, which I saw only on the dinner menu, was served to us during lunch. I am positive that the chef read my fiance's mind as my fiance always chooses lamb when offered on any menu! Smoked duck breast: This came highly recommended by other reviewers, though one reviewer pointed out that it was too sweet. I believe the sweetness of the citrus-star anise consomme went perfectly well with the smoked duck breast. My only criticism, as another reviewer had mentioned, is that it was quite chewy. Complimentary cheese plate: Our favorites on this plate were the honey and the apple sorbet swimming in champagne. At this point, we were sure our table was bugged because immediately after my fiance mentioned to me that he would love more sorbet with champagne, Miguel brought out a complimentary dish of 4 amazing sorbets and a bottle of sparkling wine! Fifth course: Chocolate souffle: The chef must have read my mind because I would have chosen this perfectly cooked souffle as my dessert. Light cake topped with caramelized apricot (I think): I didn't even try this dessert because I gave the souffle all of my attention. My fiance (who prefers light and fruity desserts) enjoyed this and would have chosen this as well. A note about the service: Miguel was incredibly sweet and very attentive. He put us at ease which I find critical to a perfect dining experience. He's there every Saturday, and I am already planning my next visit with my foodie friend!!!
