This review hurts because my kids and I really do love their ice cream. However, time and time again the customer service is HORRIBLE. Being greeted and served with a smile or friendly tone is everything. I know we all have off days BUT we have been to this Tocumbo over a handful of times and I can't recall one occasion where we were treated with a happy face. My five year old once couldn't decide on a flavor so I asked if there was anyway one scoop could be split into two different flavors, I was very rudely told it couldn't be done. I also always request they serve my kids smaller scoops and I've gotten eye rolls with a "it's going to cost the same" as if it's more work for them. I don't mind paying the same but really? No need to be rude. Worst of all my sister in law ordered something once and told them she was extremely allergic to strawberries. We saw the lady cut up strawberries for a different order and then proceeded to use the same knife used on the strawberries for my sister in laws order!! The menu is extensive and easy to read but I wisH there was more direction on how to order because I walked up to the cash register to order but they were taking orders from the side counters before they paid. This is the worst ice cream restaurant I have ever been in my entire life. Let me tell you why: 1. The service is inefficient. During my visit, there was a total of four workers behind the counter, and they were moving as slow as a snail that got hit by a truck on a Sunday. 2. The venue is NASTY! There's napkins flying everywhere, tables and counters not cleaned and wiped. I can't even tell you how the restrooms are. 3. On top of the inept workers behind the counter, they took FOREVER to give me my order of nachos. Here I was thinking that it's taking time to make because it's filled with a bunch of oozy cheese and meat for $5, but it literally was just NACHOS AND CHEESE. WTF? Never coming to this place again. They have many different variety of ice cream, homemade popsicles, smoothies, juices, agua frescas, the list goes on. I come here just for the COCONUT agua fresca. It is so good and refreshing. You can get any other agua frescas any other place but coconut, you never see. The only thing is that the Chula Vista location does not make it there. The staff are always friendly. Andres knows when I come in what I'm getting, all he asks me is, what size? The price is reasonable, it you check in yelp, they'll give you 10% off. Plenty of parking. They do not know how to give out change. I paid 12.17 for 3 paletas and a bag of duritos and i paid with a 20. When i walked out, i realized that the lady only gave me a dollar and 83 cents of change. I walked back in with my mom and the lady refused to believe that she made a mistake and said that she gave me full change and claimed I was lying. I've only tried the artichoke sandwich and I haven't tried any of the other ones because I really like this. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and finally got an opportunity to take the kiddo/ice cream connoisseur/snob extraordinaire. We walked in and took a number as instructed by a sign at the entry but apparently that wasn't in effect at this time. We started looking at flavors and noticed they have bins of Mexican juices as well, which looked promising for a future visit. I think they're used in the smoothies a lot but I'd be interested in trying them on their own. Anyway, we moved over to the actual ice cream and there were double bind of each flavor, some of which were clearly marked with the name and some weren't or they were staggered so you could mistake one flavor for another if they were similarly colored or something. There were also several Mexican flavors that didn't have any translation, just the name in Spanish which is a little intimidating if you're not offered any help or asked if you have any questions, which we weren't. Normally, I have no problem speaking up and asking but this was for my kid and she gets turned off of seemingly complicated things that have to do with one of her most treasured treats very fast. She opted for a scoop of vanilla and a scoop of chocolate because nothing else appealed to her since they were in another language and she didn't feel like having them translated. Needless to say, I was not too happy with the service. It wasn't bad at all-but it definitely could've been much better. I like my child to try new things and this would've been a perfect opportunity. Maybe next time I'll come alone and bring a new flavor home because she definitely won't ask to come back. The ice cream was good-creamy and rich, both flavors represented well. Also, I thought 2 scoops was $4.79 but the girl charged me $2 something plus I got 10% off for checking in so regardless of the experience, the discount made me happy! read more

Do you want tortas as long as your arm? This is the place. My daughter has been begging to try Tocumbo for months now. She got tostilocos and a scoop of limon. I opted for a chicken torta. I thought the price was a bit steep until I saw the size of this thing...and my picture doesn't do it justice. in total it is over 12 inches easily. So $9 and some change is worth two meals. Inside was beans, cheese, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and onions. It comes with a pickled jalapeño and a side of some super delicious spicy red onion slices. I would say this is more of just a sub rather than a traditional torta. The limon ice cream was more of a sorbet. It was refreshing and not overly sweet. My daughter liked the tostilocos saying they were a little spicy but some of the best she's had. I'm pretty sure they're the same everywhere...she's 11. We will return again. She's already wanting to come back for paletas and to try some other ice cream flavors. read more

Upon entering the place it felt like I was transported to Mexico. They offer unique variations of ice cream from Gansito to Mazapan. Traditional offers such as Vanilla and Strawberry are also available for those who don't feel as adventurous. Their selection of in house ice cream pops seems like they imported them straight from Mexico, defiantly an authentic experience and taste. On this visit we tried several samples of the ice cream and their signature items but I personally wasn't a fan of them. I ended up getting a Raspado which is shaved ice and flavored it with strawberry and vanilla. The wifey didn't enjoy it but I thought it was pleasant. it tasted like a strawberry milkshake without the heavy cream consistency. Like traditional mexican shops they also have a deli in which you can order a sandwich. Their ingredients are always fresh and their staff is very attentive and helpful at explaining what you might not be familiar with. I have been to their Market St location but it felt like the Soup Nazi location. Very crowded and was rushed in and out.
