Went to Tojo Kitchen for lunch on a Saturday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a pretty big space for a restaurant inside Garden State Plaza, though a lot of it is closed off or behind curtains.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The menu features Korean/Japanese food. I got to try the cheese fries, onigiri/karaage bento, and the chicken shio ramen. The cheese fries had a slightly sweet and very umami cheese sauce. The chicken ramen was OK. I've definitely had better. The onigiri/karaage bento is a good value, i'd probably get it again if i were to return. The food is OK, the large space is convenient.
Came for some ramen at lunch time. We were greeted and seated right away. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Spacious and clean restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have updated their menu. Onigiri comes with many different options for inside ingredients. Spicy chicken is good, flavor has a small kick. Salmon feels short, very blend. I feel seaweed is not fresh. Not crispy at all. Tonkatsu ramen is amazing as always. I add the veggie gyoza (+$5) on the side. Really good and flavorful. Service is great. Very attentive and friendly. Food comes out quick. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Bathroom is not working, but there's one right outside by the mall concierge area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Food is beautifully presented and service is friendly, though not as attentive as I would have hoped for and there was a bit of a language barrier. Pricy for what you get. Flavors were bland despite aesthetic presentation: spicy ramen soup was missing salt and pork belly was fattier than most I've had. The broth was missing so much flavor overall. Karaage chicken bao buns- chicken itself was cooked well and juicy, but the bao bun was missing some acidic component like a pickled veggie and more sauce and the buns were getting stuck to the tray they came in. The Takoyaki was well seasoned, but also seemed to be missing spices and I wish it had more octopus in it. My husband ordered the Korean chicken rice bowl which was cooked well, but it was mostly rice and the saving grace were the few prices of juicy flavorful fried chicken. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is huge and spacious and was not busy around the time we went.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Loud Japanese pop music in background- wouldn't mind if the volume were lower.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I think it has a lot potential if the flavors were improved.
My husband treated me to dinner at Tojo Kitchen on Tuesday night. We were in GSP running errands, and he remembered that I'd wanted to check out Tojo for a while now. It's a very low-key spot on the 1st level near Neiman Marcus. When you approach the host area, you'll see a button that you press so that you can be seated. The woman who greeted us that evening was great - friendly, checked in on us attentively, and also gave me a great menu suggestion when I asked her. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dining area feels airy with the space's high ceilings and the tables are far apart from each other, which offers a sense of privacy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Here's what we ordered: - Harumaki Veggie Rolls (thumbs up) - Agedashi Tofu (my husband like them; they are ok to me - I just prefer the tofu to be more crispy) - Miso Ramen for him (vegetarian husband approved) - Gyudon for me (this was the recommended dish and it is so good! comfort food dish I needed after a long day working) - Hot Yuzu Honey Tea (very good!) We'll most likely be back again to try takeout. If you are in GSP, I would recommend it. There is also a location in Ho-Ho-Kus.
This is a very weird place to review for a variety of reasons. It's actually easier for me to simply list it out: Good - The service, when you can actually get someone's attention, is friendly - Some of the food was pretty good, such as the takoyaki - [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is spacious (but it's also weird/not good, more to come on this)[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's not super crowded which is nice and not stressful[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The Not-So-Good/Weird - [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is situated in what looks like a repurposed furniture store area, so it has very odd high ceiling lighting, cafeteria-like aesthetics, a ton of wide open unused space and just a totally non-restaurant vibe[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - This place is also sort weird in that it has a very small staff and it's kind of hard to get anyone's attention, the big cavernous space really amplifies that strange vibe - The food was kinda pricey and honestly the ramen was just okay. The shio and garlic ramen I tried were all decent but there are better places honestly for that price point with better portions - The katsu curry was ok but also not like amazing for the price [[HIGHLIGHT]]I think this place is okay if you really are dying for an asian food fix in GSP. It's located in a weird place (hence the non-restaurant interior vibe, being a repurposed furniture store or some showroom-esque store) and hard to spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not sure how this place will last in the long run but I'd say if you don't mind the nuances of the above, and want to check out a place with decent variety in terms of Japanese food, this place can do the trick.
My family of 4 got 3 bowls of ramen and 1 bowl of gyu don. The ramen was very tasty and I feel it was a good amount. Personally I could've ate two bowls myself for the price but it was good. Kids were full within a few bites of meat and noodles. The gyu don was close to room temperature but it was alright. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall it was good for coming by after shopping but I wouldn't make it a destination to run to.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The lemonade was good but prepackaged so that's that. They weren't busy and there were plenty of tables open so the one server on staff took care of everyone. Overall the price for the plate size for me was small but the food was good. I'll likely not come back again but for a first time I can't complain too too much.

We ordered bunch our favorite dishes like chicken karage, tempura, takoyaki, chicken curry and couple of ramen. All the items were very well made, especially loved the takoyaki and karage. Food came out at a good pace and service was good. One of our favorite place to dine at GSP.
Wished the food was better. The ramen and food at this location were subpar compared to the restaurant in Ho-Ho-Kus, but the experience in general was a bit of a strange one. Finding Tojo Kitchen inside the Garden State Plaza mall isn't too difficult, but it's still located off of the so-called beaten path away from the chaos of the food court. This oddly huge and well spaced out restaurant is only about a few minutes away from the food court, but you'll feel like you're in a completely different section of the mall altogether. Having been to their sister restaurant, Tojo Restaurant, in Ho-Ho-Kus, I was expecting pretty good things here, but the whole experience was off. When we first spotted the restaurant inside of the mall, we couldn't believe how big the space was. At the time we arrived, which was about 5:30pm on a Friday evening, the restaurant was pretty empty with just 2 other parties inside and both about to finish up. However, the 1st thing anyone will notice when they arrive is the amount of SPACE in there. I don't think I have ever seen a more well-spaced restaurant in my life. Well-spaced might not be the word because of the lack of efficiency with the space, but this restaurant is like one huge white cave. And that's just scratching the surface because when you make your way to the bathrooms, you'll stumble upon all of the unused space that is available too, including a giant kitchen. As to who planned the layout of this restaurant, beats me. OK, so once you get over the fact that this mall restaurant is so big, if you've been to the Ho-Ho-Kus location, the menu is an exact replica. They have your usual Japanese appetizers, ramen bowls, rice dishes and they even have a section dedicated just to rice balls. We ended up ordering a few appetizers and a ramen to share. Specifically, we got the Pork Buns, Agedashi Tofu, Karaage, Black Garlic Ramen with Corn with a set Pork Gyoza and a Spam Musubi set of 3 with egg. First, the appetizers (Pork Buns, Agedashi Tofu, Karaage). They were OK. Not great, not terrible. Honestly, can't write much about them other than I guess they are what you would expect, but they could have been hotter. The Black Garlic Ramen was just OK too. It looked a bit blah and didn't come out all that hot. In no way did it knock my socks off, but I've also had worse. As for the Spam Musubi, our kids seemed to like it. I took a quick bite of one of them and didn't think it was all that, however, it was just spam and eggs after all. No big surprise after what I wrote, but the food was just average to below average. Everything definitely could have been better, as in fresher tasting. For such a big space, there was only 1 waiter, who also happened to be the greeter too. And there seemed to be only 1 chef too. As the evening wore on, there were a few more parties that came in and it seemed people did takeout from here too, but it feels like something is just lacking here and there is so much more potential with the space and food.
Love this concept! This place is a hidden gem. I appreciate the location being out of the way from the main food court so it's not as crowded or messy. The menu has all the classic eats like udon, ramen, katsu etc. Learned from our server it used to be a large furniture store that the owner is transforming. I suggested working on turning into a mixed use space beside the restaurant. Like imagining walking into a mini-little Tokyo. With pop-up stalls, art, and little Tokyo history. We loved the quick service and delicious food!

My daughter ordered one of those triangle rice dishes that had tuna and mayo in the middle. I'm really not sure what it's called but it's delicious. She said it was the best one she's ever had. I ordered the Korean fried Chicken as an appetizer. It came out very fast and it was out of this world. Very good flavor and perfectly crispy. Very meaty pieces of chicken that were moist on the inside. My daughter got the plane classic ramen and I got the black garlic ramen. The flavors were incredible. I've never seen black garlic ramen at any other place. It had a very nice garlicky flavor on top of the standard ramen taste. The pork was so tender. It almost fell apart when I picked it up with the chopsticks. This is by far my favorite place to get ramen. I will be returning here for years to come, hopefully it stays open. We were the only customers so the waiter was very attentive and super nice. Food came out very quick and I have no complaints whatsoever. I look forward to bringing my wife here next time and maybe trying something different off the menu.
Whether it is a bowl of signature tonkotsu ramen or a shoyu ramen, you cannot find a more quality place than Tojo Kitchen. Their thick, creamy, hearty pork flavor broth is made from pork bones, chicken, and collagen boiling over high heat for hours. If you crave for more than just ramen they also specializes in karaage rice burger and dim sum, such as shumai, spring roll, and gyoza. The service was great. Be patient since they have a small team serving lots of tables. They are located on the first floor in the luxury wing pass Gucci and Tiffany and Co. Cheers

Over all a great place to get yourself some delicious Japanese Udon and other treats. I love the crispy, delicate crunch of the calamari. The refreshing drink, soft yet tasty gyoza and udon was a great meal over all. read more
Tojo really left me wanting more, more food because I was still hungry after eating here. I have to say, the spot itself is just way too big, the decor is nice. Everything has a cool and hip feel to it but it doesn't match their food. The servers were also really nice and attentive. Everything was great except for the food. I started off with an unsweetened iced tea and it was good, it was served in a plastic container though. I'm not sure if they re-use these but if they don't that's just a huge waste of plastic, but at the same time if they do I can't see it being all that sanitary with the way the container is shaped. We tried the pork buns, as that was the only type of bun they had to choose from. It was very bland, the veggies had no flavor and I'm pretty sure the white sauce on top was just mayo mixed with something light. For entrees we both got the shrimp ramen and it was honestly barely edible. For two people who normally slurp the broth of ramen, we couldn't even finish the noodles. In the whole bowl there was only one shrimp! Which was peel and eat and after I peeled it, most of it was a dark color so I didn't even try it. The broth just tasted funny, didn't have much flavor and the flavor it did have was not good. I definitely wouldn't stop here again, there's other places in the mall with better options. read more

Made a quick stop for lunch while in New Jersey. I got the Black Garlic Ramen and the total with tip came to about $20. A bit expensive for a bowl of noodle but the chashu (Japanese braised pork belly) was cooked perfectly. Bold flavor, very tender and chewy, and the chashu just melts in your mouth when you have your first bite. Another pro was their egg. It had the perfect texture for me, not too runny, and well marinated. Staff was friendly, but the place seemed a bit empty. Not bad if you are looking to have Japanese ramen at Garden State Mall :) read more

Located across from the concierge desk in a quiet section of the mall, which does not offer much shopper foot traffic to market the restaurant. Decided to finally walk in and give the restaurant a try. The space is huge so allows for over 6 ft of spacing between tables during these COVID times. Now to the food, the menu is pretty simple consisting of drinks, appetizers, dessert, Ramen and donuri bowls. Service was friendly, prices were fair and food was good. Restaurant was clean, parking is not an issue and today it appears the facility was ran mainly by a female waitress and female cook during lunch hours. They work hard, so I would recommend diners to support the business and keep them surviving during these difficult times. The spicy pork bun was good. The Thai ice tea was interesting served in a bag, good for kids to not spill I guess. See pics. read more

This has become a family favorite and now I will go out of my way to go to the Westfield Garden State Plaza Mall just for the Tojo Kitchen kiosk on the second floor of the mall. My family owns a French Bulldog and Frenchton, and when I saw the French Bulldog Taiyaki treats I just knew I had to get one. Well one turned into two and two turned into four and the next thing I knew we were hooked. Our ultimate favorite has to be the Custard Frenchie Taiyaki, but they are all so delicious and I will easily be back for these sweet treats! I wish they would open up a more localish one to Long Island or at least Manhattan. read more

Visited here during COVID about 2 years later and surprisingly this place have gotten a lot better than last time! I ordered the spicy ramen and the broth packs a good punch of flavor. Sadly there was only a slice of chashu lol. We also ordered the gyudon as a side dish and it was alright but nothing special to talk about. Only thing bad this time was that they forgot to bring out the appetizer of fried calamari. Our ramens came out before the appetizer and that's a no-no. I can imagine the fried calamari being crispy and sizzling but sadly all we got were cold pieces of squid. read more

Located near the Neiman Marcus entrance at the Garden State Plaza, this Japanese establishment specializes in ramen and "small bites" including, pork buns, spring rolls, gyoza and more. Unfortunately since the cook was running a tad late, they opened 30 minutes later from their original opening time. Most of the authentic deco is located at the entrance leaving rest of the restaurant kind of bare. This place is so large that when they seat you, one doesn't have to worry about being too close as the tables are 20 ft apart. As a starter, I ordered the chicken karaage. This is Japanese fried chicken implicating the technique of which the ingredient is lightly coated with flour and deep-fried and comes with a lightly spicy Mayo dip. The appetizer was warm, juicy and the dip - a perfect combination. As an entree, I got the Tonkotsu Ramen consisting of roasted pork, bamboo, naruto, soft boiled egg, kikurage and Pork bone base. The ramen was ok, chashu only one piece was tasty and the noodles thin. Before I was finished with my meal, the staff handled me the check. Ultimately, not a ramen place I would try again considering the wealth of options in the surrounding area. read more

I've eaten here many times ever since it opened, and as a fan of their good and service, it baffles me that this ain't full every time I eat here. SO FIRST, DO NOT HESITATE. COME! For appetizer, we ordered takoyaki and karaage. Both of the servings were good for 3 of us. * Karaage - crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, very savory umami flavor but not salty * Takoyaki - Octopus pieces were big and fresh, crispy outside and creamy Entree: * Tonkotsu ramen + pork chasu rice combo - Pork chasu was very tender and melts in your mouth, right amount of flavor - not salty ay all - Ramen noodles al dente, broth flavor profile was spot on * Black garlic Ramen + Pork gyoza combo - garlicky and flavorful but not overpowering, noodles aldente - gyoza tasted homemade rather than frozen * Chicken Nanban - crispy outside and juicy on the inside - sauce was very flavorful/umami but again not overpowering OVERALL, their food is very authentic as per my mom who stayed in the Japan for 10 years. Flavor profile is spot on, very affordable, and serve good portion. Plus ambience is very nice and spacious too, and service/staff us always above and beyond. 10/10 RECOMMEND! read more

This wonderful restaurant tucked in a corner of GSP allows for an escape from the madness of the mall. The atmosphere is pleasant and the design is so cute with pug iconography. The food was scrumptious and I can't wait to come back. read more

The problem is the brightly lit physical space, which is cavernous and not all that inviting. The waitstaff may not notice you when you arrive, but are reasonably solicitous once they have made your acquaintance. Still, the long distances they have to cover may result in the occasional wait. I was looking forward to red shiso juice, a special, which, according to the picture on the table card was going to be served in old fashioned glass. Our server came back with the bad news, and suggested the gold and green shiso juice for which I mistakenly plumped. This arrived in one of those plastic pouches that looks like hospital saline, with straw. Kind of interesting taste, but not what I wanted. I'm not six. Takoyaki were hot and fresh, with lots of shaved bonito. A few were a bit chewy, and perhaps there was just a little too much mayonnaise. Our bowls of ramen were very good, if a little on the small side. I savored the black garlic tonkatsu, which came with pork belly, and La Portena enjoyed the chicken broth variety. They know from broth here. I would return, and have a bun or gyoza as my starter. For mall food, it's more than decent, but you can find better ramen in Ft. Lee. Convenience has its price. read more

I think i've reached the point where I have high standards for bao's. Tojo's kitchen has surpassed that standard with their chicken bun. It had great taste, I did wish it had a bit more chicken but the taste was definitely there. The lettuce- I feel like I liked it better without the lettuce (or less). read more

I came here by chance but I'm glad I walked in because a nice bowl of ramen was just what I needed today. I had karaage and black garlic ramen. Karaage was just the perfect amount of crunch on the outside and super tender inside. Black garlic ramen broth was nice and rich and not too garlicky. The service was really good too! I was getting Gong Cha, saw an ad for this place and decided to check it out. You get 10% off if you go to Tojo's after getting a drink at Gong Cha. This place was pretty empty during lunch time. I'm guessing it's because this place is kind of hard to find. It's behind Tiffany and Co. A little out of the way. But the food here is actually pretty good and that's what counts. The ramen broth is tasty and pretty authentic. I recommend the black garlic tonkotsu ramen. The spicy ramen is also good, but it's actually pretty spicy. So get it if you want some heat. The only complaint is that the serving size could be a bit bigger. I would like a bit more broth with my ramen. We also got the takoyaki and pork buns. Takoyaki is pretty good. Pork buns are great and should be ordered! I can see myself coming back here again for ramen. Im just happy there's a ramen place in garden state actually! ;) read more
