Never even knew this place existed in my life and dine with a friend because she said they have very neat happy hours, which they did, but it was not very pleasing. I'm not even a picky eater but everything I ate, there was something wrong with it. This place is supposedly Asian themed and that's exactly what it gave off, themed. Because everything I ate felt like fake Asian food. The sauce for the meat, even the sushi rolls were pretty sad to be called a sushi. One of the rolls literally had just a huge cucumber in it with fish on top... Not my idea of a sushi roll now. Even the calamari & Gyoza should have been cooked longer, not even crispy. I have been back here several times since my last review and therefore felt it needed to be updated. Now that Tokio Pub has become more a more seasoned restaurant the service seems to have gotten much better. I love the food here, it seems to be Shaw's quality without the steep prices. The sushi rolls are decently sized and made with a good quality sushi. The calamari here is also fantastic you have to try it! You can get it for free with the new Yelp Check in deal! They also have three different types of edamame which are yummy... my favorite is the garlic version... but the spicy is good too! Wasn't really sure where to go after we had walked in, and even after entering the restaurant it was a little confusing as there wasn't a host stand. I ended up walking all the way through to Shaw's, realized I was no longer in Tokio Pub, and then walked all the way back and asked the guy behind the bar who was very friendly and seated me immediately. We made use of the check-in offer (free gyoza!) and I ordered the ramen burger, have to try it once in my life, right? The gyoza was okay. The ramen burger was good, but I'm not sure is get it again. The burger itself and the toppings were great, the ramen part I wasn't really a fan of. They are thinner than your typical ramen noodle and so do have the same "al dente" bite and they were a bit bland. Like it could use a packet of ramen seasoning sprinkled on top, although that might be a bit excessive. Overall the experience was good, food was okay. I would check it out again. read more

This is a slightly unusual restaurant as it has the feel of a normal pub but food more like a izakaya. It has potential since the food is prepared quite well (like crispy dishes are actually crispy and many dishes have a variety of textures) although a little salty for my tastes. But if you enjoy bold and spicy flavors, the food here will be perfect for you. The chicken meatballs were very tasty and unlike the ones you find in the supermarket. They're made with fresh ingredients and have a distinct Asian flavor to them. You only get 4 meatballs per order but don't let that discourage you from trying them. The barbeque braised pork nachos were practically a mini meal in itself. Inbetween the crispy chips is a special mix of vegetables and their own version of salsa. This comes with a good amount of pork inside. I found this to be quite balanced and a well designed dish. The spicy tiger shrimp is quite spicy and extremely flavorful. It's good if you like spicy grilled shrimp but it is quite expensive. However, if cost isn't a concern, this is quite enjoyable. The crispy pub potatoes were really crispy and served in plentiful amounts. An amazing deal if you order during happy hour as this is enough to feed some people. It's kind of hard to describe the flavor but I think most people will enjoy it. The calamari and shrimp roll and dragon roll were okay to me. Both had great presentation and a lighter refreshing flavor but I prefer Sushi Para or Sun Shui's versions more. With this being said, I like fusion style rolls more than traditional rolls so some people may really enjoy these a lot. Same with noodles, I enjoy Vietnamese or Chinese style noodle soups more but the braised pork belly and naked dumpling soups were both done fairly well. I ended the meal with a chocolate filled beignets. These were crispy on the outside with a molten center. A little sweet but quite enjoyable. Although some items were too salty, sweet, or spicy for me, it's clear that the chef has a good concept of dish design and excellent execution. Ordered takeout from here after work, and was honestly quite disappointed. I got the bang-bang calamari, steamed porkbelly buns, and dark meat fried chicken. The calamari was extremely plain. The tobanjan sauce was available on the side for takeout, presumably to keep the rings from getting soggy, but I would have expected the breading to have some sort of additional seasoning to it. The porkbelly in the buns were a bit dry and tough. The slaw was composed of cucumber and carrots. Nothing extraordinary. The fried chicken was actually pretty good. However, I wasn't a fan of the sauce that came with it. It was very thin and a bit too acidic. The sauce was available on the side probably because it was for takeout, but I would have preferred had the sauce been thicker or cooked with the chicken. The menu for tokio pub sounded awesome however the dishes are much less appetizing in person than they are described and than they look in the other reviews' posts. Came here on Sunday for half of Sushi and Sangria with 3 kiddos. Service started off a little slow, with it taking a while for our table to be acknowledged. After we ordered, food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Our sushi and sangria was great. The kids somewhat enjoyed their ramen sliders and sweet and sour shrimp. To be fair, they are pretty picky. Our kids edamame was forgotten about, but not a big deal since the sliders came with edamame. I had a previous review from 2017. Decided to update in 2019. So, I went here tonight. All went well. I am a bit sad that the hot rock appetizers are no longer on the happy hour menu. That is the reason I used to come here. They were a good price during happy hour (steak was $5 during happy hour; $5.50 for the tuna). For $10 / $11 it is very expensive. I feel the tuna isn't as bad of a price; since they give you 7 pieces that are thicker, rather than the 5 super thin pieces of steak. You can get a real full filet mignon at another restaurant for say $30. Three of these $10 hot rock filets ($30 total) would not even equal up to a quarter of the amount of steak you would get for $30 elsewhere. So, that is why I removed half a star. 2nd half a star removed because we didn't really care for the salad or the fish taco. Other than that, service was awesome. Fast & friendly! We did get the hot rocks, because I wanted them; and, they are fun to do. But, I won't come back for them like I used to at this price. We also got two maki rolls, salad, edamame, & three tacos (chicken, steak, and fish). The chicken and steak were good. The fish was bland and just not good at all, won't get that again. Maki was good, on par with other places. The edamame was good (spicy version), and, the drinks were good (in bloom). Salad wasn't to our liking; to me it just tasted like peanuts. I love this place it's a hidden gem. First off make sure you check in because for your first check in they give you a free order of the gyoza app. The restaurant is attached to Shaw's and has its own entrance but can also be accessed inside Shaw's. I love the decor it's very industrial and has the dark earthy tone colors. The place has a cool low key hipster vibe to it with a small bar and lots of seating. The food is delicious and very fresh tasting they put their own unique spin on the dishes which makes it fun and exciting. The gyoza/potstickers app is outstanding the ginger vinaigrette was an awesome accompany to the dish. I love their sushi rolls they are not over sized and the fish is so fresh. My favorite rolls are the spicy Tuna and the Volcano roll but the others are also amazing. The drinks are also great I enjoy the white peach sangria it's so refreshing. The service is friendly and on point I have been here a couple of times and they always take care of me. Unfortunately I have not been here for happy hour yet (sad face) but from 4-6pm everyday a lot of their food on the menu is marked down half price as well as the drinks. Side note: One other super cool thing here is they have a board by the bar called Friends with benefits I know what Your thinking but get your mind out of the gutter lmao. Little hidden gem next to Shaw's that is a must try. I was pleasantly surprised when I first walked in; they have a really nice ambiance and some good music playing. The vibe is real lay back and chill. The menu is not very big which is something I really enjoy about most restaurants because that means the items have been perfected and are fresh. The gyoza is complementary when you check in...which was very cool. It was so good and the ginger sesame vinaigrette was on point. Now on to the Maki...we went for lunch so we shared 2 rolls. The Tokio Spicy Tuna...and it was a very cool spin on the classic spicy roll. It has cucumber on the inside and the tuna on top. That roll was out of the world and I can't wait to have it again. The other roll was the Volcano Roll and that was another knock out hit. With the fresh tuna and cilantro really add some good flavor and the chili oil adds some good heat. Took advantage of the Sunday special-- for an additional $3, you get a bottomless bowl of ramen but you don't have to get the same flavor. You can sample all 3 flavors. The venue is densely packed with tables and chairs to meet the demand of customers streaming in constantly. We arrived at 5pm and the place was already rocking, though not full yet. By 5:30 it was pretty much filled up. However, even though the venue has a high density, it doesn't feel crammed. In saying that, if you are bringing children, be mindful that they will not have lots of room to roam or draw on the table. The food... straight from the menu you can see that this is a fusion restaurant, fusing Japanese, Latin & American food. There are many dishes which are "tapas" style, small tacos or steamed buns that comes in triplets or quintuplets (5). Hence this restaurant is Asian style friendly, a corporate culture, i.e. food is shared collectively rather than each person order individually and eat their own plate. This is the best way to eat I reckon! It enhances the familial environment and you get to eat more varieties :-) Favorite food of the night... Gold prize would go to the Pork Belly Steamed Buns ($14). They pork belly are so well roasted and has the right balance of meat & fat. The hoisin sauce that marinates it is reduced to perfection, sticky & gooey, not over nor under! Silver prize goes to the Bang Bang Calamari ($9). The taste on these little suckers are addictive, don't leave without trying it. Bronze would be the Ramen. The smoky pork broth is exactly what it tasted like, smoky and porky! But it's not too heavy, it's flavorful but yet fresh at the same time! It gets bronze because the portion is a bit too small for $14. I would need three bowls to be satisfied :-p Service... the staff here are all really helpful, friendly and efficient. Our wait knew the menu well and pointed us to the popular items after knowing that it was our first time here. Such an amazing experience. Met a couple friends for lunch and realized Tokio Pub was closed even though their business hours said they were open on Facebook. We decided to walk into Shaw's and ask if TP was open. The man at the front who I assume was the manager, said that they weren't. I let him know about the business hours on Facebook. He apologized and said because of the mixup on Facebook, he would give us the Tokio menu as well as the Shaw's menu. We sat outside on Shaw's patio (such a nice patio area!!) and were given both menus. Our service was exceptional. One of my friends has a shellfish allergy and they took such great care of her!! Tokio Pub is by no means a traditional Japanese restaurant, but if you're looking for some Asian fusion food with a unique twist, it's a great place to go to. My appetizer came first, which was an order of the calamari. It was sadly quite small but packed with great flavor. The entire bowl was coated with delicious spicy mayo and other delicious sauces. Some of the pieces were a bit too salty, but overall great. My boyfriend and I ordered two burgers, the ramen and salmon burgers. Both were out of this world! The salmon burger was ENORMOUS and had this sweet glaze on it. Before I knew it, the whole thing was gone. I honestly thought the ramen burger was ok. Oddly enough, we saved some of it for home, and when I reheated it, it tasted even better. The night ended with an order of the beignets. It wouldn't be an understatement to say that these were definitely the best beignets I've ever had, but be careful! Lettuce Entertain You has a decent thing going on, though there are, of course, exceptions to this rule when people start associating certain businesses (ahem, Cheesecake Factory) with the suburban-in-a-bad-way stigma, but Tokio Pub proves LEY is still a hip force to be reckoned with. I really like Tokio Pub. They've made me second guess the eye-roll I do almost immediately after anyone utters the words 'cheesecake' and 'factory' and then of course, ceremoniously follows it up with "and there was just so much food!". I'd had Tokio Pub on my to-do list for a while now but I think their menu highlights of 'tacos, sushi, barbeque' made me put this on the back-burner. Despite the good things I'd heard, Tokio Pub sounded like it was going to be just another kittywampus collection of everything and anything under the sun, who think that just because you have the ingredients to make something, you should. But that's not how it should be. I don't need to go to a restaurant with 10 pages of items and a section of sh*t from every part of the world and frankly, I hope I never hit a point where I'm craving sushi, spaghetti, egg rolls, nachos, mac and cheese and tikka masala all at the same time. Aaaanyway, Tokio Pub left me pleasantly surprised in more ways than one. First off, their specials are insane. As a girl on a budget, I know the importance of stretching that dollar- and as a girl who's a really sh*tty cook, I know the value of finding the most economical way to still get down on delicious grub. So please, let me outline Tokio's bevy of special options for you: Sunday: $5 specialty drinks. Your options are limited to 6 different choices, but that's still not a bad deal. Choose from bloody Marys, mimosas, screwdrivers, sakemosas, Mr. Miyagi Smash & a drink called the Bloody Samurai. Mondays: A select draft microbrew is only $3. #Steal Tuesdays: Half priced bottles of wine & sake. Monday-Friday from 3-6pm you get half off all apps. Ain't nothing wrong with that and their appetizers are actually pretty stellar. I recommend the peanut noodle salad, which is something I would've never ordered on my own but they sent some over complimentary and it was stellar and defo not lacking on the spice or the cilantro. Also, don't pass up those crying tiger shrimp with sriracha. I didn't find them very spicy, but I did find them delicious and devoured in record time. Good job, Belly! Taco Time: Once a week they have a thing called taco time, where all their tacos are $1 for 1 hour. Their next one just happens to be tomorrow, October 17th, starting at 7pm. It's specias like this that make me think that maybe I could survive if I ever did become homeless. Think about it. 1 gourmet taco or 2 cans of cat food? Yep. I think I know where my hobo shoes are headed. For sushi, I'm a sucker for spicy tuna and I think Tokio did it fairly well. It was $10 for the roll, but it was filling and comparable more to those fancy maki rolls you'd get at sushi-centric restos, than the typical smaller, simpler spicy tuna. For tacos, I went with tofu, though next time I will be going fancy with the crying shrimp & tuna poke. Our tacos were all pretty lukewarm, if that, but that didn't disguise that they were damn good tacos. I think I could've eaten 10 of those tofu tacos. In fact, I'm seriously considering dropping by tomorrow for $1 Taco Time. Dessert, the chocolate filled beignets. Why can't the portion on THIS be Cheesecake Factory sized. Good Lord, Good Food. The ambiance of the restaurant was great and the staff was kind. But the food was a lot of misses and one hit. The bang bang calamari was amazing. But wow was their ramen bland (the broth was extremely salty), the dumpling were okay, and the noodles were hard. It was also a soy based ramen so it just felt like instant noodles. We were in Schaumburg and wanted to try something new. I looked through the Yelp check-in offers and was pleased to find the generous offer from Tokio Pub. (1 free starter). I love small plates and I love to share, so it didn't take much convincing to get us here. We arrived sans reservation and snagged the last two seats at the bar. In another stroke of luck, Tokio Pub had a Restaurant Week menu. Score! We started with drinks, I ordered the raspberry saketini and the hubz got a Robert The Bruce on tap. Our free starter was the ceviche - yum! For the RW menu there were four courses for two people for $33 total. The appetizer was braised pork nachos. A large portion and great combination of salty and sweet. The next course was the taco sampler. We tried the shrimp, steak and fish. All delicious and all about two bites each. The third course was the starter sampler. It included two spicy tiger shrimp, two chicken meatballs and three baby back ribs. Before the dessert came out we each had a jello shot. It was dragonberry flavor and dangerously delicious. The dessert was, however, THE highlight of the meal - a bag of chocolate filled beignets. OMG. The warm donut holes melt in your mouth and leave behind a healthy portion of melted dark chocolate. Heavenly. Our server, the bartender, was one of the nicest people I have ever met. She was talkative, punctual and helpful. Overall it was a nice evening. The restaurant had a good vibe and there is still more on the menu that I would like to try. read more

So whenever I come here I just eat like a big fatty. Get the coconut curry soup...you'll want it fed to you intravenously from now on. Love the potstickers...and you get a free order of them when you check in with your Yelp app! Crispy fish and chicken tacos? YUM! Tiger shrimp tacos?
