Good show with warm service and good food. That being said, the sushi side is a bit slow and disorganized, service is a little patchy, and although they try hard to stick to gluten-free when asked, they have not yet pulled it off for us, and have caused pain both times we've been there. The Japanese grill scene is entertaining and the kiddos loved it. All in all it's pretty good, but the service and attention to people who have dietary needs that are medically significant should be better. read more

This place is amazing! We came here on a date night, and left elated. The decor is gorgeous, the staff is incredibly friendly, the hibachi chef was hilarious and so talented. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered a seaweed salad, the hibachi steak and twin lobster tails, which came with miso, salad, and rice. My partner substituted the regular rice for the chicken fried rice which was prepared on the hibachi and he said it was awesome. They also have a full bar (which is always a plus for me), and a large selection of wines and sake. I like that they also offer a kids menu because we plan to bring our preschooler back with us to enjoy the food and the chef's talents. He's a huge fan of Masterchef so I think this would blow his mind. read more

Took my stepson here for his birthday dinner. They sat us, and it took an hour for our chef to come out and start cooking our food. Food was good, portions were really small, it wasn't a entertaining show like Benihana has. I called beforehand and multiple times throughout the meal said that there was a birthday in our party, and they still never brought the ice cream out for him. They also messed up my stepsons order and I had to remind them after everything was almost done cooking if they remembered his chicken or not. We had a reservation and still had to wait, even though there were 3 empty tables. The waiters were in a hurry to get my friend and I out of the restaurant (even though there were plenty of empty tables and no customers in line) but didn't rush the tables that had European customers. This really bums me out to give them two stars. My reviews are normally "yeah, go here!" But they really fell short of everything. Staff !? Um, no where in sight. Order? Wait. No staff to give your order to. Therefore, stand at what is to be the bar and take the attention away from other patrons waiting at their tables to get another drink and chat the staff up to give you a drink ( and we got one of course!) The concept is a good one, but the owner/manager really had no idea how to handle more than 20 people coming to his restaurant. Anything over that was chaos... Which was what I witnessed. We came in at 7:30 (called ahead with reservations for 8), didn't leave the place until after 10. Even if we did show up at 8, I don't think anything would have changed. Was someone on vacation!!?? Maybe like five other people!? Fired rice was good. Recommend you order that IF the place is "empty". I also liked the sushi, but that could be because I was hungry and couldn't wait for the main meal. Which I knew how much it costs, but unfortunately our friends picked up the bill! Boo. read more

My boyfriend and I came into Portland for my 25th birthday after the previous day spent working up a killer appetite in bend at mt bachelor. Just a few nights ago my boyfriend got me to try some sashimi and I really liked it. So when it came to deciding what I wanted for my birthday lunch, I decided I wanted something that would leave me feeling physically good when I was done. So we went to Tokyo table and it was empty cause it was close to closing before dinner. The waitress was adorable and so kind and knowledgable. We got lots of absolutely delicious sashimi and some tasty hibachi. After the day spent walking around shopping and drinking some beers I had to decide birthday dinner. again, I just wanted to feel good after I was done. I'm use to being drawn to fried foods and always left tired and feeling like crap. I left lunch feeling almost high on life so I decided let's not bother on testing out anything else. We went back for dinner and was treated like royalty. Everyone was so friendly and attentive and our hibachi chef was a badass. I will never forget this delicious double birthday experience. I'm now addicted to sashimi and will be back anytime I'm in Portland. read more

We were the first people in so service was very quick. We wanted sushi and sat by the sushi bar, so the service was that much quicker. The sushi chef took our order and got started on that immediately. We had a trio platter of Philly, California and tuna rolls. Everything was solid and pretty standard. Then we ordered a Ginzo roll, and that was amazing. The little bit of heat from the jalapeno and sriracha was a great complement to the creamy sauce. We didn't even need to dip this roll in soy. Honestly this was some of the worst service I've ever had. My partner and I went in for dinner around 8:15 in a Friday night. The waiter seated us and asked us if we wanted to order any drinks and food. He then proceeded to barely serve us for over an HOUR while they waited to load the table up. He never once mentioned that the wait might be an hour and fifteen minutes and was not very attentive. Our cook also made fried rice for the 4 people who ordered it- then gave the leftover to another couple who happened to buy him a drink. My boyfriend was supposed to have white rice come with his and our cook literally just looked at his empty bowl and put it down kind of near him. We had to seek out our waiter (who had been completely MIA for over 10 minutes) to make sure that he had his rice. In the meantime, the cook had finished preparing our lobster which was now getting cold. Finally after everything was done the waiter sort of acknowledged the fact that we literally waited almost an hour and a half to eat but then did absolutely nothing to make up for it. I thought he would at least take the edamame off our bill! Ridiculous and they obviously don't know how to take care of customers. This rating is almost solely based on service. I had the WORST experience here last night for my birthday! I made a reservation for 10. I called around 15 mins before the reservation time to let them know we were definitely coming. But I was running a few minutes late. I was told that was okay but that the chef might have to skip over us and come back to take care of other reservations. I said no problem as we would be ordering appetizers & drinks. Once we get seated we all order our drinks and appetizers. Two of my guests ordered the exact same thing. One comes out, the other doesn't..... about 30min later they show up with the other appetizer. After my guest already said forget it that they didn't want it anymore. I ordered a sushi roll that came about 45min after I ordered it with hair in it! So at this point it's been like an hour that we have been sitting annoyed with the service. I understood there may be a wait time on the cook, but the service was terrible. We FINALLY get our cook. "Carlos" who I have heard great things about. We all got excited. I told him that we haven't had that great of a time so far but that I was excited that he was cooking for us! He was cold and outright disrespectful. 1. My guest and I both ordered kids meals for our children my son is two so I just asked that the food be added to my plate and I would feed him as the table was too cramped for him to have his own plate. As he is dishing out the rice we were both asking him to make sure that we both got the extra rice that came with our kids meal. He was handing out the rice and told us we needed to "figure it out!" Very rudely. What is there to figure out!? I ordered and am paying for a meal for my child and you are dishing out the food why would I need to go back and forth with other people at the table for my food!? 2. My guest let him know that we all like extra seasoning and extra garlic butter. He literally said "I do what I want!" Supposedly it was a "joke" but I don't think that's funny at all. Especially when he passed out rice that was very bland! I should not have to put soy sauce on rice from here. 3. The absolute last straw for me was again one of my guest was sharing the plate, they both ordered food but the space was cramped as he was passing out garlic butter he was asked to just put the two servings together in one bowl. He literally said "nah bro imma put them all out like this SO YALL DONT GOTTA KEEP ASKING ME!" He said the "so y'all don't gotta keep asking" phrase at least 4 other times for various reasons and this was the breaking point for me. I questioned him on being disrespectful and he claimed that we had been rude the entire time which was not true we had received terrible service the entire time and should have left hours ago. We proceeded to argue. My child and I left the table because I was so upset. I was convinced to come back inside by the manager and my mother. The manager told me to just come eat and my food would be comped. When I returned to the restaurant Carlos had passed out my food to all of the other guests instead of actually making my plate and hoping things got figured out. So there was no food for me to return to. We all left and I can say that I will NEVER return to this place ever again. Which is disappointing because I've been a regular here for a couple of years. The fact that this was my birthday dinner and I had asked guests to come here to celebrate me and we were treated this way was unacceptable. read more

Frankly, I'm surprised by the number of five star ratings this place has received. The staff was friendly (talkative to a fault), the presentation was good, the food was certainly fresh but $32 for steak and scallops seemed a little steep for portion size and preparation method. I'm sure some of the reviewers below would point out that this price isn't out of line given the "cook it in front of you" style however I decided to try this place based not on the "table experience" but on the glowing reviews of the food--specifically the "second best steak in Portland." While I don't want rain on anyone's parade (the place is decent after all) there is no way that the food served here is in contention for the "best" anything in PDX. In fact, had the same meal had been prepared out of sight and brought to my table I would consider it good but not excellent. I love to write great reviews. I love it when restaurants wow me and I can share it. One year ago Tokio Table was new or relatively so. The experience was great, so when my adult daughter chose it for a birthday celebration I was delighted and made a reservation. If you are not familiar with the type of restaurant this is, think Benihana. Teppanyaki. Showmanship with a grill. Last year very good showmanship and skill, this year more basic, but nothing to complain about. Among us we ordered steak, sea scallops and Salmon. The steak was ordered medium by my 12 year old granddaughter, and medium rare by my 14 year old grandson. My daughter and My wife ordered sea scallops (which I knew I would taste) and I ordered salmon. The steaks were identically cooked very medium. The scallops were nearly vulcanized and suitable as bumpers or door stops and only my timid plea to have the salmon a "bit rare" saved it from being utterly inedible. I made the plea as I watched in horror as the pieces got obviously too done and I hoped to save them from oblivion. What my intervention got me were two merely over cooked pieces. Since I was driving, I had not ordered a cocktail. The bill came to over $230 for the three adults and 2 kids. I certainly am willing to spend at that level. But I expect expert cooking. We most certainly did not get it. read more

Tepanyaki, if you're familiar with Benihana, this is sort of one of them. Very expensive, and more for group dates than regular dates. Definitely not a romantic one, more like a fun one. They seat 8 at a table, so if your party is less than 8, they will seat you with people you don't know. Oh, you didn't want to hear lame pun jokes? Don't get seated with children. Their drinks are expensive too. Almost $13 for half a double old fashion cocktail whiskey. The steak I had was $36 for an okay cut. That's for one person. Oh, and the parents kid who was telling all the "egg-cellent" jokes didn't even tip the chef who was cooking. People, you just got a dinner and a show! Tip your damn chefs!! I took out one star for the exorbitant prices for an okay food and drinks. And another star for the bathroom: its a very weird feeling, the place is nice until you get to the women's bathroom with all the carved graffiti on the stall door, the damp air and humid smell, and you'll wonder, if you got transported to a gasoline stations bathroom in the middle of Nebraska on a dead winter. For how much they're charging, they should be able to make the bathroom look and feel, at least as comfortable as the rest of the restaurant. read more

This place has a great staff and menu options. The guys who cook your food really know what they're doing and there's a good selection of Japanese beer on draft. I came here for dinner and had a nice time. My only complaint is the premium cut of beef was a little on the grayer side of things. Make a reservation, it helps! I took my family of 4, with 3yrold and 10mo old girls. The staff was very friendly and helpful with our kids. They had high chairs and boosters that worked well at their tables. The chef was great and even better with our kids. The food was a bit overpriced for its quality but was still very good, however, we may be spoiled by JMK Nippon. Excellent selection of sake, and a nice little selection of Japanese whiskey. The biggest issue for a 3 star rating is the wait staff. She didn't know how to pronounce anything on the menu or what any of the items were. The chef complained about her, saying that she wasn't new at all, but still acts like it. She forgot our kids dessert and a few other items for other diners at the table. It caused the chef to have to leave the table multiple times. It took 20mins for my wife to get her first cocktail to the table. One of those rare Portland places that's cool for adults with great food but also kid friendly without killing the vibe. Had a great time here last night - have always wanted to take my daughter to a good hibachi style place with all the bells, whistles and humor and this place did not disappoint. The food was excellent - I had the chicken fried rice, steak and scallops and even the green tea ice cream tempura for dessert. The staff was also very good especially the chef who prepared our meal - and gave extra special attention to our daughter. The atmosphere was very nice, modern and open. And was not too crowed at all - we even had our own table to ourselves unlike many similar places that try to pack as many folks as possible around a grill. The dining room was quiet when we went, at 8 o'clock in the evening.We like to find places where we can have a conversation while we eat, and it's not really really noisy. Great food! Watching your food get cooked on the grill right before your eyes is always great fun. The staff have always been polite and friendly. The atmosphere is always fun, but the modern decor/style of the restaurant itself might seem a little over the top or something along those lines. I've been there a handful of times. I've never really had a bad experience here. The last time I went the waitress noticed how I loved one of their sauces, so she gave me an extra container of sauce (for our takeout/leftovers) free of charge.
