We came for lunch again yesterday and tried 3 new rolls - all were really good. I loved the Temptation roll the best, my honey loved the Happy Roll. The Crunchy Tuna roll was good but not as exciting as the other two. They give you a LOT of sauce - sometimes it is on the roll, sometimes on the side. I love this - my honey prefers less sauce. So if you don't want a lot of sauce let them know. The service was quite fast yesterday - I am guessing they added extra staff for Valentine's Day. But it was definitely a good pace for lunchtime, when people are usually in more of a hurry than at dinner time. Now that I've tried six different rolls and not a stinker among them, experienced very good and fast lunch time service, I am increasing my rating. I still love Cowtown in Southlake but I have a lot less motivation to drive all the way out there now. read more

We ordered the fries as appetizers, they were delicious, but only with dipping sides. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT order the volcano or Cajun roll. I was so pleasantly surprised by our recent dining experience here - although I don't know why I would've expected anything other than perfection from the owners of Shinjuku Station. The atmosphere is totally charming and on a Saturday night, we were able to carry on a nice, quiet conversation even though the place was packed. We had the pork belly as an appetizer - I highly recommend you try it. Temptation and Seattle rolls, and the ribs with tempura veggies. Everything was fresh with a homey feel. Tokyo Cafe is Americanized restaurant with lots to offer. We tried various sushi rolls (california, unagi, and salmon) We have never tried the maki version of sushi so it was a pleasant surprise. We ordered a "Kim Chi" bowl which was very good. A mixture of Korean Kimchi, Bok Choy, roasted pork belly with a fried egg on top. Price wise, the food is really good for the price. The tempura fried Brussel sprouts are so good (ask for a side of the sauce that comes w the fries and dip w it SO GOOD). Our first experience here was fantastic! Having ordered the kimchi fried rice, several hand pieces and rolls, we were fans. Upon our second visit, which we were initially excited about, I've committed my sushi loving heart to Little Lily. On the second visit our kimchi fried rice was over saturated and soggy. The integrity of the rice completely shot beneath a horrible ratio of kimchi:rice. Clumps of rice could not be eaten with chopsticks- a spoon would have been a wiser tool here. The special Four Alarm roll was very well executed and completely rounded in flavor- but the lackluster shishito appetizer left us with a bad taste in our mouths. The rice beneath our sushi was uncomfortably cold as well. Add a drastic drop in quality of the food to being blatantly ignored by our waiter for the day and you've got a couple that will never return. Our waiter seemed quite attentive to the other tables that trickled in after us, but ultimately un-engaging...a smile never crossing his face for the hour plus we spent there. On a completely personal level- I found his level of indifference concerning his work very off putting and frustrating. Quite the change from the week prior where a very sweet woman(baby in tow) continuously inquired after our meal and experience as a whole. Maybe Mondays are when they staff their B Team. Came here for lunch with some med school classmates and our teaching physician and was pleasantly surprised on their take of Japanese food. We co-shared stir-fried edamame among the 5 of us. One of us ordered the Volcano roll, 2 others ordered the Lunch Bento Box A, and another ordered a custom bento with mixed green salad, panko covered pork, brown rice, and tok fries. My bento box came with seaweed salad, teriyaki chicken, tok fries and soba drenched in soy sauce. My other classmate said she would have rated the sushi a 3.5/5, granted she has a high caliber for sushi. Looking at the volcano roll, I thought the mayonnaise would overpower the delicate flavor of the scallop but it surprisingly didn't. Tok fries had a good texture and thickness - not to crunchy, not too soggy but the spices were piled on. Everything was flavored a little on the heavier/saltier side but I would definitely be open to coming back and trying other items (noodles/rice) on the menu. The taste is more suited to American palates. The prices were also on the higher side for the quality. Service was fantastic - our preceptor had to leave early and they got the food right out and were very attentive to filling our water glasses. The bao bun wasn't what I expected because I was actually expecting a bao bun but this was different. The meat inside was good but not what I was wanting. The chicken dishes were ok. I visited for the first time a couple weeks ago. First impression: small/tight parking lot, cute decor, tons of beautiful natural light, friendly service, delicious sounding and extensive menu. My husband and I ordered the Tok Fries, a couple sushi rolls, and one of the Ramen bowls. The Tok Fries were the best we've ever had. They were the definition of umami. Sweet, salty, savory, spicy, with a crisp texture. I appreciated that they weren't even the slightest bit greasy. If you go, you MUST order them! So tasty. The sushi was wonderful too. We had the Volcano roll (my favorite) and the one with mango, also tasty. Everything was going great until the Ramen was placed in front of me. I ordered it with the pork belly... which arrived grey and dry. It was so tough that I couldn't even chew it. I picked it out and placed it on a separate plate because it was absolutely inedible. I asked my hubby to try it, and he spit it out. Absolutely terrible. The waitress apologized and said they were still working out kinks with their smoker? I guess they were wanting to go with a more BBQ type pork belly than traditional. As far as the rest of the bowl, the broth was super bland even though it was a mix of miso, shoyu, and chicken broth. Next to no flavor. The noodles were way over cooked and almost disintegrated in your mouth. All in all, I would go back but would definitely NOT order the Ramen. read more

I am surprised to see the number of 5 star ratings for Tokyo after a recent visit. when compared to Blue, Kona, Axiom I really felt like this was a 3 star or even 2.5 stars. Just not much flavor, and the texture was off...tough almost. I could almost believe the California roll (which came out almost instantly) had previously been made and put in the cooler... I was really happy with our visit to Tokyo Cafe and will definitely be back. I like the relaxed environment, the service was excellent, and our food was delicious! We had no problem parking or getting a table quickly. We tried a little of everything: apps (get the Tok Fries!); ramen; and a few rolls. The Scallion pancake appetizer is amazing and unique! Not your traditional Korean scallion pancake, but so delicious! The ramen was hearty and my husband enjoyed it. I took my half home and had it leftover and it was great. It I don't know what they have, I suggest call first but you won't regret it. I did start with 2 pc. salmon sushi (not pictured) and the AVO bake. Delicious baked avocado with stuffed shrimp and crab. Then we moved on to two sushi rolls not sure which one. Great tasting great quality sushi that tasted fresh. Wife had the Yakisoba noodles also were very nice. I enjoyed the atmosphere. Not a stuffy place inside decorations were appealing to the eye. My server young lady was nice, courteous and well informed. Its prices are comparable not crazy, rolls from $5 California to a $12-14 specialty roll but I'm sure it's great. Ramen choices if you like that. Rice bowls. You can't go wrong. Crowded times are late evenings. I went about 6, not so bad. Met a friend for lunch today. I was seated immediately in a bright dining room with lots of windows, comfortable chairs and tables spaced far enough away for a little privacy. The room is decorated with brightly colored paper Japanese lanterns, a cheerful and welcoming atmosphere. My friend wanted me to select dishes since she is not familiar with a lot of Japanese food. The chef, Kevin Martinez, stopped by to welcome us. He said he was making a new salad and wanted us to try it. It was filled with fresh kale, lettuce, daikon and other vegetables with a light rice vinegar dressing. It got better thoughout the meal as the dressing was absorbed by the harder vegetables. We ordered the Tokyo okonomiyaki, a savory pancake cooked in a cast iron pan. It came to the table sizzling hot with the katsuobushi (bonito flakes) dancing. This dish satisfies on several levels. It's a little chewy, salty, sweet and savory, a fun dish to share. I ordered the hamachi kama (yellowtail collar). This succulent piece of fish is a classic. My Japanese mother always ordered Kama at her favorite restaurant and ate it with rice and miso soup. So, we ordered rice and miso soup to enjoy with the Kama. The miso soup was just how it should be, not overly salty as if often the case. The nicely grilled Kama was presented with ponzu sauce and lemon. Let me just say that when we got finished with it there was nothing but bones. My friend is definitely going to have it again. We also ordered the sushi of the day. A beautiful roll with crab and avocado topped with yellowtail, tobiko, yuzu tartar sauce and scallions, and we managed to eat the whole thing. Our server remarked that other servers were watching what she was bringing to our table and said, "Those ladies know how to eat good!" We couldn't agree more. Chef Kevin came back to check on us and the owner, Mary Ho. also stopped by. What a warm and friendly place with outstanding food. I am going to start coming more often. read more

My brother introduced me to this place a few months back. They have a wide variety of selections to choose from. I got sushi and the prices for the generic rolls were pretty good. My brother got Japanese pancakes. They had little flakes on it that looked like they were moving. I have to say, it was pretty cool. Recently, I came back and ordered some Ramen to go. I am usually more of a Pho person than Ramen, but this was a game changer. Overall, this place has a really cool ambiance and would be fun to go out to on a Friday night. Corny description, I know, but truly the best way to describe. Almost like you don't want to order too often because it is such a pleasure to experience you don't want the novelty to wear off. French fries at a sushi restaurant? Yes, every time, order the French fries! Dipping sauce and the flakes make a yummy salty umami party in your mouth. My favorite roll is the Tejas, but the yellow pearls of delight on the New York roll lifted off and added equaled perfection. To call it an end we ordered the green tea ice cream to share. First impression, the place is beautiful. When you walk in you are greeted by the hostess, who checks your temperature as a covid percussion. Sanitation stations are everywhere in the restaurant. Masks are mandatory to enter, however once you are seated you don't have to wear it. They just ask that you wear it if you get up from your table. Menus are electronic, you use your phone to scan a barcode and pulls up the link. Super easy! & this way you're not touching a menu someone else has touched. Lots of food to choose from. Food was good, however portions were very small which was very disappointing because it is a bit pricy. At least pricier than other sushi places I've been to. Our food also took a very long time to arrive which I didn't mind too much at first but once we got our food and saw how small the portions were I was definitely very disappointed we waited that long for that. Ok guys, have been wanting to try this place and decided to pop in on the fly. I liked the casual, cool atmosphere and seems to be a great place to kick it after work or really any night with friends. Nice friendly staff too! I had shishito peppers, Bao bun, 2 types of salmon nigiri and the yellowtail nigiri. The shishito peppers were excellent, perfect tangy bite followed by a nice sweetness. The Boa might have been my favorite! The bun was fluffy, but also had a nice outer texture to it so you got a nice chewy bite with a soft center. Totally worth it. I like basic sushi, I'm into tasting the quality of the fish and I don't go for rolls covered in sauces. Sushi was good, nice quality, freshness was on point. Only thing I noticed was that a few pieces had a small amount of rice and wasn't packed right enough to hold shape. The place is amazing, from the point you walk in the atmosphere is very relaxed and the service is amazing. We were greeted and seated right away and got our drink orders in. We started with the bao buns and really enjoyed them. Then we ordered a tempura roll, crunchy roll and miso soup and ended with a Tokyo-Konomiyaki which was a little too oniony for us but it looked amazing and came out quick. I'm so happy Tokyo is open again and slinging the best sushi. The remodel is beautiful. It feels so open, modern & bright with pops of color. The flow through the restaurant is easy. Every time I have been, there is a wait. Apparently myself and everyone else have been (im)patiently waiting for the doors to open again. So, be prepared to dine with the early crowd OR just wait it out at the bar and have some cocktails! They have great daily specials- there's a daily bao, a special roll, and something from the kitchen. On our last visit, it was a whole grilled bronzini. There's still a great family feel.
