From buckwheat hull pillows, to fragrant teas, futons, cabinets and more - Tokyo futon is a magical spot to pick up a unique gift for a friend/and or loved one. I first learned about this place after admiring the stunning silk pillows that a friend brought over to our place. I adored the exquisite silk design on the pillows and I was particularly excited to learn that they were each filled with buckwheat. Buckwheat pillows are wonderful in that they are extremely moldable, there are no toxins and they're great at controlling body temperature. Though you can definitely score cheaper loose leaf tea elsewhere and you may have trouble swallowing some of the prices attached to their vintage and newer furniture - Tokyo Futon is still worth a visit. 8/2/2023 I was waiting for my son in the next door shop and came to see this cute store.. Looked like a lot of cute items in the window.. Loved seeing the waving cat.. On the front door sign, stated a request for customers to have a mask on., Found a mask, went to open the door and it was locked. Hours did state it was open.. Wow this shop is so beautiful inside. It's a little bit of Japanese and also pan Asian. There're beautiful traditional Japanese decors, art, and unique trinkets from local artists (mugs, cups, that are modern with Japanese influence), beautiful unique tea from Taiwan wow (the tangerine puerh tea is beautiful!), and friendly shop owner. Lot's of Japanese home decor and tea in this store. You will find everything from bed sheets, lighting, tea pots to the famous "Kit Cat Clock" here. Oh yes, the Kit Cat clock. You will find a few set up on the shop front display. It's what caught my eye when I was walking past. This clock is the best gift for someone if you are from overseas. I got one for my sister and myself! We both love it. The Kit Cat clock is made in California and has been since 1932. In fact, this is a great gift store overall. Especially if you love Japanese tea. There are so many varieties to choose from! Many different green tea fusions with fruit and different flowers. So, something to everyone! read more

I usually try to refrain from writing rants, but my experience here was so ridiculous that I have to share. Let me preface this post review by saying this place has some great pieces and high-quality wood. The problem is actually receiving the goods. Here's what I purchased: 1 wooden bed frame in the light natural color 2 wooden drawers in the light natural color to fit below the bed frame (space-saver!) Here's what I received 1 month later: 1 wooden bed frame in the darker walnut color (the store manager called the next day letting me know the color was not available) 1 wooden drawer in the walnut color. The store manager let me know that they would receive the 2nd drawer the next month and have it delivered. No problem right? Wrong......... I called multiple times and asked for a refund before the 2nd drawer was delivered 6 months later. When the 2nd drawer was delivered, instead of just delivering a new drawer, they delivered 2 drawers and took away the first that I had already put together. Drawer 1 came together fine, and the 2nd drawer was cut so poorly that I could not assemble it. I was furious and called them to have another drawer delivered. Finally, 6 months later, I finally have a full set. The take-away: This place has great pieces. Order from here if you'd like to wait 6 months for your purchase in the wrong color and be really angry about furniture. read more

It's been about three months since I did a long overdue remodel of my apartment. In the process, I ditched the traditional folding futon frame and replaced it with a tatami mat and 4" shiki futon, and so far, I love it. It's comfortable and takes up a lot less room. Space is always an issue living in a studio apt. in the city. It's the perfect set up. I didn't come here looking for the typical futon, nor should anyone else. The furniture here is japanese inspired, so know that coming in. Jenny, the owner, was friendly, and not in any way pushing for a sale the few times I went in. I had it delivered by, whom I believe was her husband, and he didn't seem as affable. For $54, I'd think you'd at least put a smile on. read more

My friend and I randomly stumbled in here one evening while we were wandering through the Mission. It was the rows upon rows of shiny metal tea canisters that attracted my attention. The owner Jenny was so sweet and friendly, and offered to let us sample any tea we wanted. I picked the Jin Xuan Oolong (my current obsession), and we had several tiny cupfuls of it, gongfu-style. The store has such a peaceful, relaxing, serene atmosphere and the tea-ware is lovely. I didn't really look at the beds, but I gotta say their small tea selection is rather impressive and far closer for me to get to than the places in Chinatown or Inner Richmond. read more

Excellent selection of teas, but, oddly, they charge sales tax on packages of leaves - perhaps because they are mainly a furniture store and not a grocery store. Unfortunately, this makes them more expensive than other tea shops on Valencia Street, like Stonemill or Samovar. There is also no expiration date on the packages, as required by law, and the tea I bought was clearly stale (and wildly overpriced for the quality) - too bad - it's a cute little shop. But if you are serious about tea, try Dolores Outpost (19th and Guerrero) for freshly imported, organic tea and many other delectable snacks, mostly from Japan. There is nothing Japanese about Tokyo Futon except the name. read more

I walked in here by accident. Well, it wasn't completely by accident. A couple of my girls and I were strolling from brunch at Hayes Valley and ended up on Market St on our way to drop one of us off at the Bart station. We round the corner, we stroll, we talk, and as I am oblivious sometimes to my surroundings, I am grateful I have friends who see trouble coming from a mile away. A noisy street cleaner and several loud homeless men were starting to circle our group like sharks, so the wonderful Miss Jess P. pulled me into Tokyo Futons and the rest of the girls followed. So I ended up here to escape, but when I started to browse around, I started to become envious. I started wanting to throw away every scrap of furniture I own and start over. And when I looked at the pricing, it was possible, it was feasible, to start my re-decorating here. So, yeah. I didn't buy anything and I'm reviewing the store. The man behind the desk wasn't salesy and didn't push anything. I asked questions about delivery and assembly and he was as helpful as could be. I now save my pennies though. I'm another happy customer of Tokyo Futon -- I went there after I read the reviews on Yelp. Lovely little store with a small but well chosen selection of tatami beds. I did a lot of research before buying, and their prices are the most reasonable in the Bay Area. Staff was friendly and helpful; delivery was exactly when they said it would be. They also have a beautiful selection of Japanese fabrics, and I look forward to coming back for a custom comforter cover soon! read more

While exploring Mission District with a friend, we stumbled across this little gem. It's a fairly small store that sells loose teas in the front (including small pu'erh bricks and monkey-picked oolong) and the furniture in the back. If you want some tea to-go, they'll even brew it there for $3.50/cup. Littered throughout the store are also interesting knick-knacks like bento boxes, the cutest children's chopstick helpers, and even zodiac chops (the Chinese stone stamps)! They offer a free tea tasting as well (but I'd leave some tip for them) if you want to learn more about the variety of teas. read more

One time long, long ago, I took an awkward nap at a stranger's house on a tatami bed. It was a really nice bed, but it didn't make the nap any less awkward. In order to right this outstanding wrong, I bought myself a tatami bed from Tokyo Futon last week. I'd previously been in there to browse, and they remembered me when I came in to make a purchase. They delivered the bed to my apartment for $45, lugged everything up 2 flights of stairs, and then offered to put it together for free. My pseudo DIY ethic kicked in and I opted to assemble it myself. I've since taken many non-awkward naps on it. Complete success. read more

A charming store that lured us in! They have quite a big and good selection of tea, and they all smell so so good! However, I do find their price way too steep. And oh, they offer free tea tasting too. They carry Japanese theme furniture such as futon, pillow, cabinets, chair and beds. A small mock up of a Japanese room tuck right at the back of the shop, quite close to how Japanese room look in those Japanese drama. ;) You can find Japanese theme tea sets, incense, cards, decor and even face masks! The guy who runs this shop is nice and helpful. His prices, more importantly, were 30% lower than the price up the street at FAB futons. We got a really cool antique rosewood bench, a rosewood necklace holder and a futon cover for about $300. We haven't taken delivery on the full futon cover (microsuede) yet, so I'll update when we do. The cost of the cover was $119. FAB wanted $149 for the exact same one. Go figure. For a totally bizarre peek into the underworld of cubicle hell that asia must be, try the Hula Chair and imagine what horrors make this chair seem like something that will improve your workday. I go there for the tea: they have some of the best Chinese and Japanese teas as well as some lovely herbal teas. Sammie, the woman who serves and sells the tea is so nice and friendly that I feel that I am in her home being served delicious tea. You can sit at the big tea table and taste many varieties of tea, chat with other customers, and decide which tea you want that day. I see that they sell many beautiful items too, not only futons, but tea sets, and other household items. read more

I had been dreading the onslaught that is Ikea, but buying a futon for our guest room was so easy at Tokyo Futons--it cost a bit more, but not that much (and we all know what happens to the Ikea mattresses after a few years--this one seems so much more solid). Excellent place to buy a futon. I walked into this place at about 4 pm, found a nice futon mattress (high quality with springs) at a very competitive price. The delivery charge was only $30 (lots of places charge much more) and they delivered the mattress *that same night*. On a Saturday, no less. Not two weeks later. Not "when we get it on from our warehouse, maybe we'll give you a call if we feel like it". That very same night. After I bought the mattress and started to walk home, I got a call from the nice lady at the store. I had accidentally left my jacket there, and she wanted to make sure that I got it back. I got a Queen size futon, tatami mat, head board, from them recently, it was super comfortable and they charge a pretty resonable price. I just walked by there today again to look at some furnitures and I saw they were offering FREE TEA TASTING, Yeah you heard me FREE!!! The Jasmine green tea was DA BOMB..leaving my mouth having this fresh taste. Look for Sammy or Jenny, they were super friendly and not pushy. Tokyo Futon & Tea is a great place, you have got to check out this articular store. I bought a couple bags of tea for my grandma and mom, it suppose to help you lose weight and drian out the oil in your body. Don't take my word for it, go there and check it out for yourself. Eh, when this place was in the deco ghetto it was more futon focused, had a better selection. I bought my bed there, really nice. But when I went back recently with a friend they only had 3 types all too soft. Looks like they're more focused on tea and furniture, and less on futons. read more

I was looking for a couple tri-fold futon as an extra bed for overflow guests. I was having no luck at camping supply stores and someone suggested a futon shop. Tokyo Futons had a couple to choose from, and we had two within a week. They had the utilitarian ones that we bought, but also a really nice soft one that could easily have doubled as a comfy rug for watching TV. Lovely store. read more

Every time I have been here, I only receive awesome customer service. The shop is run by a couple, and they are probably the nicest shop owners I have ever met. We bought our beautiful futon from this store, and we had a few delivery hiccups but the store owner kept constant communication with us and made the delivery process as painless as possible. I also have to recommend the tea they sell here, I found a Taiwanese red tea there that isn't generally sold around here, and the storeowner made it perfectly and I ended up purchasing a bunch. I went to two other places before I went to Tokyo futons, and I chose Tokyo Futons because of their price and service. Their prices were the cheapest between Just Futon on Geary, and The Futon Shop in San Mateo. The service was also great. Jenny was a big help to me in deciding which futon to get. I waited a little while after I got my futon to see if anything would happen. But happy to say nothing did, and I am really enjoying my futon. Great Place! read more

Tokyo Futons not only offers furniture, they also sell a wide variety of loose teas from both Japan and China. My first visit included a sampling of three of their teas including the jasmine white tea which is light and refreshing. I had requested a slightly decaffeinated or decaffeinated tea with a nice nose and this one really works! Jenny (the owner) was really quite friendly and helpful in her suggestions for tea preparation. My second visit included purchasing Earl Grey and more Jasmine tea -- both of which are delicious and fresh. If you like loose tea, I highly suggest frequenting their establishment. read more

Sorry, I moved right next to this place, and wanted to feel the love, but I think you can do better if you've got a car. They only had four kinds of futon mattresses. They can order other kinds, but they don't tell you about them. From the saleswoman I only got "soft foam", "firm foam", "springs", and "cotton/wool blend." I couldn't get much else out of her. And when I asked to try lying down on one of them, she only cleared off the pillows from the couch, rather than unfolding it into a bed. The place was cramped, so I sympathize, but good luck trying to pick a futon to sleep on when you can't try lying flat on it. They also didn't have many queen mattresses in stock, and (like 90% of the other small futon stores I checked) were at the mercy of the same distributor, who was out of stock for the mattress I wanted. I eventually found Mary's Futons in San Raphael, and I'd recommend it if you want to actually both try out your futon and walk out the door with it. They read more

I have been there for many times already'cause I keep comparing the prices with other stores. Finally I made up my mind last week, I bought a tatami bed with them due to their prices are the reasonable one. Besides that, I bought a few home items, like the little pillow . It only cost me $25. I love my tatami bed now. I love the pattern and the color of my cover. Thanks the lady helping me with it. I cannot say ENOUGH positive things about Jenny at Tokyo Futons!! I bought, essentially, my entire bedroom set from her (a king sized bed frame, three cabinets/tanzus with sliding doors, two bedside lamps and multiple pillows) last May and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Not only do I LOVE her high-quality, tasteful furniture (and enjoy living with it everyday) - she was helpful, present and patient when I was picking it out and arranged an easy and stress-free delivery within the city for a small, additional fee. I bought the rose tea and most of the flowers had worms. You can clearly see the holes and find the worms inside when you peel them apart.
