So. This review is based more on my last (and final trip) here. Honestly, sushi is alright here compared to the rest of the state, but in this podunk town, there isn't really any other options. We ordered a bunch of rolls between the three of us. Meal went alright besides taking forever to receive our food. When we did, we felt like we got more than we ordered, but since we ordered quite a few, we rolled with it. Come to get our check, the waiter tells us they accidentally delivered a roll for another table to us and they were going to charge us. Why are we just finding this out when it's time to leave and not the other numerous times you came by? We complained and they still added the extra roll we didn't ask for to our bill. Seriously what kind of restaurant would ask their wait staff to go to a customers table and do that? Unfortunately if you live in this insufferable place it's the only tolerable sushi around. I won't go back as I will take my opportunities to get my sushi fix when I go out of town, but if you don't have that option, be prepared. read more

On our first night of a motorcycle trip we stayed in Ridgecrest. This restaurant was walking distance from our hotel. We split gyoza & tempura as an appetizer with a Coldcock & Monster roll as our main course. The gyoza were tasty & the tempura was light & crispy. We sat at the sushi bar so we could watch the chef makes our rolls. They were too pretty to eat! But we ate them anyways. We enjoyed both rolls with a slight preference for the Coldcock roll. The service was attentive and good. An enjoyable meal. Great way to start our trip. read more

I can't really tell you what is good to order here, but I can tell what is very bad. The Sesame Chicken that I ordered tasted like it had been cooked several days prior and then cooked again and served to me. It had tough, chewy little cubes of chicken. Although the portion was generous, I couldn't eat it all because the quality was so bad. It was accompanied by a few leaves of fresh ice berg lettuce, which was actually the best part of the meal. I also had the sushi taco which was very bad. It was a pile of chopped tomatoes with some very small cubes of unidentifiable fish mixed in. It was not worth the $6.00. Coincidently, a woman I met on the petroglyph tour had the same dish as me and agreed that it was gross. Okay, so I am only reporting on this one experience, but I wouldn't go back anyway if I were passing through town. I'm still trying to forget the meal i had here. read more

For a desert town, far from the sea, it's nice to have a place to find decent sushi at. Definitely my top pick for Ridgecrest. Great place for a Birthday, dinner date, family outing or by yourself. We love to sit at the grill and watch the chefs cook. All dinner meals are served with cooked vegetables, rice and a ginger dressing of some sort. All very good! read more

Stopped in here again for dinner while in town working, and had the Teppan again. The service was definitely better than last time. My Teppan chef was pretty good with his lame jokes and did a good job. Dinner was quite tasty although it did not impress me as much as last time. One recommendation to this restaurant: all the storage and junk along the north wall, clean it up. No one wants to see a bunch of junk and what appears to be dirty laundry in the dining room area. We called for a table for 17. When we got there, chairs were set up to sit around 2 teppanyaki grills. We were able to face each other and share two fires from the grills. The chefs were great, entertaining as they prepared our meals. We ordered chicken with scallops. Cooked to perfection. Fried rice was tasty. The sushi and sashimi was surprisingly great. The veggies to finish the order was crunchy yet cooked enough. This was a favorite memorable meal in our 8-day desert tour. read more

Tokyo House has an amazing bar with some great specialty drinks. I had the margarita and it was good. This was my first time here. Right when wait down a waitress came to take our order. We asked for a minute due to the fact that we didn't get a chance to even look at the extensive drink menu. They have three different places to sit. One being the area that has the cook come to your table and cook for you while he puts on a show, sushi bar seating, and lastly typical table seating. The server are on it and approach us quickly to take our order. My husband ordered the New York steak and myself the Teppan Scallops. We were not impressed with our meal my husbands steak was bland and my scallops had no flavor. The veggies were delicious. I was so disappointed and only ate two of the six scallops served. We ordered a crunchy sushi roll which was served warm. We are not used to having our sushi roll warm. This place was not cheap so we expected a better experience. It was a bummer. read more

I spent six years in Japan and I know I'm not there anymore. However, this was a terrible attempt at making Japanese food. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken (should have been chicken thighs)...more like cube cut pieces of really tough chicken breast with teriyaki sauce poured over the top. The miso soup was watered down...not enough miso paste. The vegetable medley that came with it was horrible too. I could not convince myself to eat more than 1/4 of the entire meal. So, I ordered the Tempura California Roll...it tasted like it was deep fried in old grease. I was 0 for 4 items. It appeared the locals loved the restaurant especially the teppanyaki. I would say maybe next time I will try the teppanyaki but it WON'T BE a next time. I guess my many years in Japan and having a Japanese spouse, ruined the experience in this restaurant...good luck! read more

I'm being generous. Two stars (rather than one) because this is a small town, the people seemed nice enough if not the most professional, and my expectations weren't very high. I'm having a hard time seeing how even people who live in Ridgecrest and don't have easy access to nicer restaurants can rate this place so highly. It is really grimy and I lost my appetite almost as soon as I walked in. They're lucky my phone battery had died or I would have snapped a few pieces of evidence. The carpet, fr example, is a huge turn-off, old looking and so dark around the edges like it's covered in grease as I assume it is, and also has stains in a number of places. Same with the vents on the ceiling - lots of black streaks like the grease from the exhaust fans over the grills is just getting sucked back into the restaurant. Gross. Speaking of gross... We were there near closing time and it seemed to be all hands on deck for cleaning the grills and tables. The rags used may have started out clean and white, but within seconds of staff cleaning the grills and the drain boards around them the rags got soaked in icky tan-brown liquid. Other staff were dragging not so clean looking rags over the tabletops that surround the grills. Finally, I never saw what she was talking about, but an employee with pink streaks in her hair said loudly from just a few feet from where we were eating, "Ew... gross. It doesn't look like it's been changed. I think it hasn't been changed since this morning. Gross." Boy, if I hadn't already lost my appetite I would have then. It's possible that the food might actually have been sort-of okay, although I know it didn't compare with good Japanese meals I've had in bigger cities like Vegas and Sacramento (and I'm talking neighborhood places, not expensive or fancy restaurants). However, at Tokyo House I was too distracted by all of the visual and auditory negatives going on around us that I couldn't focus well on the food. As another reviewer noted, although it offers sushi, teriyaki, and tempura, this restaurant appears to have much more Chinese than Japanese influence. The woman who appeared to be in charge (and who spent a lot of time standing in the middle of the restaurant observing her staff) appears to be Chinese. We don't live nearby so it's easy to say we won't be back, but even if we did live here we wouldn't be back. read more

We stayed in Ridgecrest because we came out to hike Telescope Peak. After a long day we were really hungry. We were staying across the street and people recommended this place.. why? I assumed it was a Japanese restaurant but it does not even come close. The only thing Japanese here is the beer. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and steak. It came in cubes! The seasoning is 100% Chinese, my girlfriend who is also Chinese said the same thing. The music, that was playing was Chinese too! The sushi was not close to fresh and had a weird taste. This is one of the first reviews that I have written that just was not to par. The older Asian lady was yelling at a employee in the restaurant, in front of customers about cleaning the teppanyaki area, just rude and she looked like she did not want to be there. They want to just rush you out after your done eating. I guess I am spoiled because I live in the San Gabriel Valley area and all we have is Asian food. Well, after much debate and reading all the Yelp reviews, my friends and I decided to come here for dinner because of it's excellent reviews. Should have listened to the one bad review... The service was fine. Everyone was nice. The food, on the other hand, was sub par. First off, the main course was served BEFORE the veggies. I've been to Bennihana multiple times and it makes ZERO sense to be served veggies after you've already had your main course. I had the steak and I'm sad that I did. I ordered it medium rare. It came medium well. It was chewy and disgusting. Bleck. I didn't finish it. For a reason. The fried rice (which you pay extra for) was underseasoned and had barely any egg in it. The veggies were undercooked and didn't taste very good. The salad was ok. The shrimp appetizer was overcooked and rubbery. Overall, I'd give this place two stars. How cool is this place...We had our food prepared by Ding and he was awesome. I have been to serveral Benihana style places and he was by far the best I have seen yet. We had sushi appetizers and it was very fresh and inovative. Not at all like what you would think of a place that is two hundred miles from the ocean! Charley had the Lobster & Steak...yummy I had the Sobu Noodles & Shrimp...good but nothing spectacular. Also had some sushi and it was very fresh and good! Uncle Larry & Big Aunt P had the Steak & Shrimp.. yummy ..Very tender steak! The fried rice was just okay...I have had better..but the presentation of everything was fun and quite the show. From tossing egg shells into the air and catching them in his hat...to the fire show...a real treat and not one I would expect in this small desert town. This is one of the few restaurants in town where the service is consistently good, the food is tasty and fresh, there is a full bar and children are not just welcomed but celebrated. We eat here at least twice a month. At first it was because we were desperate for anything that resembled sushi after moving here from San Diego. But soon it was mostly because the staff adores children and while our boys toss half their meals onto the ground, the waitresses and sushi chefs smile and bring them treats and beg to carry them around the restaurant. To be honest, we might like going here mostly because the staff pays enough attention to our kids that we can actually have a conversation with each other! We have had the teppanyaki, which is as good as any Benihana-style place I've been to in bigger cities, but we usually stick to the sushi. We often order sashimi, based on what's fresh (written on the little brown board by the sushi bar). We've had some great bluefin, salmon and hamachi. We usually get several rolls, and at this point have tried all of them. I can say that there are a few too many spicy rolls -- all of which taste about the same to me. The exception is the TIger roll. If you really want spicy, that one will set your taste buds aflame. (not my thing). Consistently good are the Jessica roll, the Angie roll, the Monster and super dragon. The service isn't simply interested in fawning over our children -- they also do a great job making sure drinks are full and that all else is good. The sushi chefs occasionally send over sushi gratis, and because I always order a glass of wine (even though it is crappy), they have brought over new bottles for me to try when a vendor has left them something new. I don't do Teppanyaki so I made a bee line straight for the sushi bar;. The Chef/Owner was working along with his two sidekicks. Only the Chef/Owner speaks any english (a good sign). The paper menu contains your standard selections but I looked up at the wooden board and saw what his "fresh" selections were. I asked him where he got his fish and he said he travels a couple of times a week to a fish market in Los Angeles (three hours each way) and brings back whatever they have that is good. I started salivating. On this night he had it all. The freshest tasting Uni I have ever had. Bluefin tuna that was like butter. I even indulged in some Otoro. I was on Per Diem so who frigging cares? Halibut...Sea Bass...and my favorite of the night...Aji. He was butchering entire fish in front of me as I ate. He presented me the entire Aji along with the skeleton which he had deep fried so it was crispy delicious. I almost got emotional as I ate it. This place was the surprise of my travels to Ridgecrest. I never would have guessed that such a quality sushi bar would be sitting in the middle of the Mojave desert. Who knew? read more

Apparently the very popular concept of a joint hibachi and sushi house has penetrated the deep desert of California. As far as these things go, I suppose this one rates on the lower end not too far from the middle. I began by looking over the sushi menu. Noticeably absent were choices like toro or uni. That was worrisome, so I opted to just have some eel to start since that is cooked and difficult to mess up. And indeed, the eel I had was just fine, though the rice was a bit compact and flavorless. For the hibachi I had the NY strip steak and shrimp combo. This came with miso soup, a simple salad, fried rice, and grilled vegetables. The shrimp were fairly good and the miso was straightforward, but just about everything else had an issue. The biggest problem was the fried rice which was clearly overcooked and really not that good at all. With all of that butter, how do you mess this up? Especially when you are cooking it in front of the customers! The grilled vegetables were uneven in their distribution, so my sample was almost entirely carrots. And then of course the steak that I had asked to be prepared medium rare was more like medium well. In all fairness, they slice the steak so thin, that this is just bound to happen. Of course, most people don't just go here for the food. The other half of the experience is the "performance". On my visit, I found the act to be middle of the road. There are not too many variations on the routine no matter where you go in the country, so much of it was predictable. I was amused by the "butter fly shrimp" which was literally accomplished by tossing in a stick of butter with the shrimp on the grill. Aside from that joke, everything I saw, I have seen before. There was almost no engagement at all between the chef and the audience which was a little surprising considering that kids were present at the table. Maybe, I just had a shy chef. I am really not disparaging the performance though; for the most part, it was consistent with what you would find anywhere. Overall, the food was not good enough for me to want to come back, but the prices were low enough that you will not be too sorry for the experience. Tokyo House is a Benihana style Japanese where you sit around a big grill and a very talented chef comes to prepare your meal and put on a show in front of you. They toss raw eggs around and light grease on fire and twirl sharp knifes all around. Juggling bowls of rice was pretty cool too. Our group of four fond the show quite entertaining. The food was very good by Ridgrecest standards and even quite good by big city standards. They specialize in gilling steaks, chicken, and seafood. Steaks are cooked to your desired level of pink. They also make fried rice on demand and even make it part of the dinner show. Odd that a Japanese restaurant is staffed by obviously Chinese people in the middle of the Mojave desert next to a navy weapons research base though. read more

The owners are great, especially the husband he's so friendly and will go around striking up conversations with customers, the staff are polite and accommodating and I absolutely love their food. I came here for hibachi in February of 2010 while on business travel with some colleagues. I believe our chef was Taku. He did a great job, and I was pleased that we didn't get stuck with the white guy. No offense to him, but he wasn't doing so well flipping his shrimp and there's something weird about that. Although I suppose it's odd enough just having sushi in the middle of the desert. Anyway, this was my first time in Ridgecrest. We ate at Kristi's the night before, which was a disaster, so seeing fresh food cooked in front of my face was quite comforting. All the meat and produce looked fresh and tasted good. There was nothing original about the hibachi (which is a dead 80s-90's fad), but the fact that you won't end up with your head in the toilet at the end of the night in Ridgecrest earns +1 brownie points for me. I plan on trying out the sushi bar next time I'm in town and will hopefully have good news to report. read more

The service here was horrible. Our server named Alexia was super rude. She seemed to rush us too order and when my husband asked for a cold glass for his beer so he could drink she never brought one. Then when she came back 10 minutes later my husband asked again and still never got one. We had to ask another server to get a glass for us. That's not what upset us though, we can deal with horrible and rude service. It's when the bill came out and it was way overpriced. We added up our meals on the bill and the waitress added well over 90 bucks to the meal. We told a different server at this point about it and he checked for us. We waited for 10 mins for the bill to come back, our waitress fast walked past our table and through the bill on the table at my husband and walked away. She didn't speak one word to us or even apologize, nothing. The bill went from 210 to 114. That's a quite big mess up. Overall wouldn't come here again, not after that horrible service. read more

The "chef"/cook was totally unenthusiastic and seemed like he would much rather be someplace else. The wait staff was mostly absent. The dirty dishes were not cleared away and just piled up. I have been an idiot for not eating here more often. I've worked at China Lake 3 years, and I only in the last year made this place a regular part of my rotation. Review for sushi only, and more nigiri than rolls, so YMMV. Jimmy the sushi chef: damn impressive. He forgot something special I ordered (that wasn't on the menu), but I finished my meal and didn't think anything of it, since the food was so good. Over a month later, I sit down, and what appears? My special order made just for me as an appetizer! Great memory, makes customers feel special. He understands Japanese as well, big plus. I had to laugh, when a very young enlisted chick said to the chefs "Thanks BOYS!" as she finished her meal at the sushi bar and left. In Japan, or any sushi bar for that matter the chefs are treated with a bit more... reverence... and referred to as Taisho (General) or Master. They were gracious and thanked her back, and waved goodbye. I have sushi bar experience in Japan, and if someone ever said that to me, I would have thrown a knife. (near them, not at them) Another tip for customers. DO NOT EXTEND YOUR HAND TO SHAKE THE SUSHI CHEF'S HAND or HAND HIM CASH. He molds raw fish with his hands, it's impolite and dirty, and forces him to stop his rhythm and scrub his hands. He will be nice enough and reach out to you if you reach out to him, but it's not a smart thing to do. Just wave, or bow please.
