Let me start by saying the food is really good, servers and chefs are really nice. Service is a little slow but other than slow it wasn't bad at all. When we received our bill, the prices per items were more than the prices listed on the menu. Edamame was listed for $7.50, bill stated $8.50. Sashimi listed for $19.50, bill stated $26.50... all three dinners were over $6 each on the bill compared to the menu. The reasoning given- after we brought it up, was they're waiting on new menus from the printer. Well great but until then you shouldn't be charging people more and not saying anything AHEAD of time. They the wanted to offer a percentage discount to make up for it... 10% which wouldn't have even covered it correctly. Rats??? Went here for Dinner tonight on my daughters recommendation with my daughter and my BFF. Should have checked Yelp first. Place is very run down. Dirty looking carpets/counters/chairs/plates ect. For the cleanliness and expense....I would prefer to go to Benihana. The ladies bathroom was disgusting and needed and complete remodel. Paint peeling of stalls, holes in ceiling, light fixture wires wrapped in black tape, dirty floors/stalls/sinks. I mentioned to my friend that I think they might have rats after visiting the restroom. (Should have taken photos) The food was below average for a teppanyaki style restaurant. The food was decent, however, I thought it was bland. The service was very good. Staff was friendly. Bartender was very nice too. After dinner, when I returned home, my husband told me that he saw bad reviews on Yelp. Rat infestation last year Jan 2018. I was not surprised at all by what I saw tonight. You would think that they would have had ample time to not only address the Vermin infestation, but to also put and little effort into cleaning it up. Needless to say.... I will not be returning. The best Japanese food ever! My family and I have been coming here for more than 15 years and we have never been disappointed. The food and chefs are absolutely amazing! The chefs put on a little show on the grill for you and your guests! I've been to tons of tepanyaki restaurants and Tokyo Kitchen beats them all. The food is always amazing and they are always willing to compromise for those who may have food allergens/ preferences (vegetarians, vegans). Unfortunately we had a bad experience, our waitress was amazing and this is why this place gets two stars. We went for my sons 18th birthday and our vibes were happy talkative, as soon as our chief came to us all energy went down: We didn't even get an introduction of his name, nor did he say im going to be hosting you tonight, however we tried to be polite and say thank you every time and not even a welcome came out of his mouth, he just kept in his own world. Service was terrible tonight. I waited an hour and a half with a group of 4. I saw people being seated that arrived after my group. Bar service was excellent though. I was told I would get the next table which didn't happen until 3 more tables cleared. Bathroom was disgusting with the sink clogged and toilet papered only being stocked after we complained and they put it on the trash can of the bathrooms. Chef was 20 minutes late and had an attitude the whole time. His name is Piloy. Not only was his attitude shit he got half our orders wrong. Served me shrimp which I never ordered and served my steak which I ordered rare at refrigerator temperature. So cold I asked if I can put it back on the grill. Pablo who claimed to be corporate said I could quote "get the fuck out he runs the place" then walked off and the chef as he's being told to leave by the actual store owner sarcastically says "follow me on instagram" Piloy and Pablo both are lucky to be working. With shitty personalities, cooking ability, cleanliness, I couldn't imagine why they would be employed. The group I was with was scared to get the rest of their order and another group left before we were being served because of the quality and lack of professionalism we were being served. I wasn't going to post because the owner was polite and apologetic and didn't make us pay for the food which I didn't eat but I can't help thinking these two guys can work here. We used to come to this place since 2007, the food was always good, it was always busy any day of the week during lunch & prices were very reasonable. We thought it closed after the pandemic, each time we passes by we don't find anybody. Today just learned from someone who work here that it had been open for 2 years under New management but prices doubled. I feel it's very unfair since we used to come often & invite all the office now it becoming harder & the place is empty @ doesn't have the same vibe it used yo have. Overpriced mediocre food. Honestly the only reason we came here was because Benihana didn't have a reservation. The soup was disgusting and smelled awful. The salad was ok just soaking in dressing. The rice needed more garlic and butter and everything else was drenched in soy sauce. Why would you drench lobster in soy sauce!? The cook was really nice and entertaining. This place was pretty good. Our chef was a quiet and grumpy looking old man. He came and cooked, said a few words and left. I liked that. There were no kids at the table, so a show was necessary. We just wanted to eat delicious food. The fried rice was slightly overcooked but still tasty. The steak and shrimp were delicious. The couple sharing the table with us got fillet mignon and lobster. Went yesterday 8/28/22 for my Wife and I's anniversary. It's been her favorite restaurant for at least 15 years. You can tell it's under new owner ship. The shrimp didn't taste the same and the steak was paper thin. Don't recommend the Rib eye. The manager was totally cool though as they did comp my meal due to the unsatisfactory cut of meat. This place continues to disappoint. I definitely didn't go in for the service this time. I still enjoy their sauce so I got a handful to-go (16) and they charged me double their online prices. Ordering online their $.80 a piece. I showed the bartender my phone of their prices and I said isn't it $.80 and her excuse was well that's just a promotional price. I then asked so if I were to have ordered them online I would only pay .$80 and she said, "yes"! I could tell instantly she was lying and came up with the first excuse off the top of her head. Could be really nice. Unfortunately we went to have lunch with the family. We were all excited because restaurant had been closed during COVID. I should have realized upon our arrival it took host (if you want to call him that , in my opinion he was a waiter/bus boy filling in and attempting to do both jobs) approximately 15 minutes to tend to us along with three other patrons waiting in lobby area. We waited an additional 10 minutes to be seated. When we were finally seated we ordered drinks and three appetizers, in which we only received one appetizer out of the tree. In total we waited a total of 90 minutes. We finally brought it to there attention. By this time we should have been out of there. The last straw was when a couple walked in and was seated at a different prep station and immediately was assigned a cook and was actually being tended to prior our group and other patrons. When we brought it to waiters attention they apologized and said it wouldn't be much longer. He said he was sorry other patrons got served prior to us. He did not even provide a no valid explanation. Shortly after the waitress walked up, we proceeded to ask for the check to pay for drinks. Waitress apologized again and said not to worry about paying for drinks and offered a discount on our meal if we waited. She stayed it would be an additional 10 minutes. We simply declined and left. It was horrible service. I have never experienced suck poor service. Needless to say we will never go back! read more

If you have been to Benihana, than you really need to stop and come here. Yes I've been to Chomp and no it's not even close. Shoguns? You can't tell but I am laughing at you. The only other place that edges this place out is Tsunami's in HB and it's because of the noodles they make! Tokyo Kitchen is located in a very unassuming strip mall in "why the heck are we in Monclair?", CA. There really isn't any other reason to visit this city. Even the mall makes me think of the 80s and not in the awesome way. Anyway it's not a chain and I am pretty sure it is family owned. The food is delicious and most of the chefs are actually still Japanese, go figure! Their seasoned rice which comes with your meal is way better than steamed rice. I have no idea what they do with it and if I didn't LOVE fresh made fried rice I would just stick with this any day. Your meal comes with lots of food, too much for one person really but it never feels heavy. You start with soup and salad with ginger dressing(looks like barf to me but most people like it) and you head on into dinner. Your entree will afford you all of the following: Shrimp app rice assorted veggies two homemade and unmatched tasty sauces and your protein most entrees even include ice cream. Green tea is still yummy all these years later. They have a great sushi bar and their alcoholic drinks even have cool souvenir glasses. I love it here, always have.
