Wife and I went here when we were in the area for a concert at SDSU. We thought it was the old Tokyo sushi that use to be by the Bank of America on El Cajon and who knows maybe it is and they just moved locations, but it was such a disappointment. The air conditioning wasn't working, but we were committed based on timing and the reviews seemed solid. The food just flat out wasn't very good. The garlic edamame seemed like they just tossed in garlic paste. Maybe I'm wrong, but it did not seem to have and "juice" which I believe most places use butter. My wife also ordered a house salad and the dressing was also just not good. We ordered a pitcher of beer and were never brought water. I used the restroom and noticed there were craft beer tap handles but those weren't listed on the menu. I was bummed because I would have preferred a craft vs a Japanese lager. Maybe I missed it in the menu but I don't think so. The person we ordered our beer and appetizers from was also not the same person who came to take our food order so it was confusing on who to ask for further assistance. Then the food... I ordered salmon belly nigiri, it wasnt great.. it wasn't rotten or anything just felt more aligned with an AYCE sushi spot. I ordered I think it was called a pink role because the mustard soy sounded nice over the top. Very little, again didn't know who was my server to ask for more. We spent like 110 dollars and nothing about it was good. Weird edamame, straight up bad salad dressing, mid level fish, awkward service, no air conditioning, craft beers not listed on the menu and no water. My wife also emailed the management team and we never got a reply. Hence the public sharing of our experience. The next night I went to poke 1 1/2 and was more satisfied spending those 20 dollars vs trying to have a nice sit down experience for 5x the price. read more

Absolutely ridiculous. Do not order online or ahead from this place unless you have an hour and a half to waste. I placed my order at 5:20pm, arrived at 5:45pm, and didn't leave until 6:50pm (!!) That's a 90-minute wait for an online order that was supposed to save time. I literally could have sat down, ordered, eaten, and left faster. In fact, a couple that arrived at the same time as me did exactly that, and left before I even received my order. The worst part? They clearly prioritize in-person orders over online ones. A woman in front of me ordered and paid after I arrived and had her food in about 15 minutes while my order sat untouched. Another customer shared he had already been waiting over an hour for his online order, and a third customer was also complaining about the exact same thing. This is obviously not a one-off issue. To make matters worse, I got a different explanation every time I asked what was going on. First I was told they were "slammed." Then I was told my ticket had gotten messed up. Later, I was told they didn't even know what happened. Which was it? There were only three or four tables occupied in the entire restaurant, so none of the explanations made much sense. If your kitchen can't handle online orders, stop accepting them. Don't take people's money and leave them standing around for an hour and a half with no clear answer. Then, after all that waiting, they still managed to mess up my husband's sushi roll by leaving out one of the fish, and the crispy rice was somehow severely overcooked. Imagine waiting 90 minutes only to receive incorrect, poorly prepared food. The final insult was the "manager" telling me he couldn't authorize a refund but would "take care of me next time." Next time? This was my first visit, and after wasting 90 minutes for bad service, conflicting excuses, and an incorrect order, there won't be a next time. Complete waste of time and money. I won't be back, and I definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant. There are plenty of better sushi restaurants that actually value their customers' time. read more

This used to be one of my favorite places for pick-up and where I would send people over if they were visiting San Diego . Honestly, I've been contemplating updating my review for the longest and it pains me to do so; Over the past years things have just really gone down hill and it really shows as today was Father's Day and it was surprisingly empty . When calling ahead for pick-up, times have been CONSISTENTLY incorrect . Please give a better timeframe --if you tell me 20 minutes, no problem; even if you tell me 60 minutes, no problem, I'd plan accordingly . But if you tell me 20 minutes and I'm waiting for over 60 minutes-- there's the problem . I would give the benefit of the doubt, but this issue is reoccurring-- and that's a shame on me for giving too many chances . I had to walk away from my order that was sitting on the counter ready to be paid for today because the waiters have no sense of urgency and I was already over an hour late to my event because of the incorrect given timeframe; --Again, I would've understood if the restaurant was slammed, but it wasn't . It's a shame because they used to be so amazing and they still have so much potential with their location, plentiful parking. and how large the inside is, but even with good sushi, customer service is what brings returning support . We visited at lunch, unfortunately there was a very large table and only one server working. She did her best tho the experience was super slow from seating to serving. Dang large unexpected group! But whatever, a frosty mug of Kirin and a carafe of hot sake made for a very relaxed and leisurely lunch. Food wise we shared a few rolls, Las Vegas, Surf + Turf, and a Rainbow. All were very well made and the fishes were fresh. The Vegas roll was humongous! For me it was really rich, so could only ate 1 piece. Surf + Turf was piled highly with fried onions, was so good. Also the steak was so tender and flavor packed. Rainbow was decent, I wasn't a fan of the sweet sauce over the top. So next time I'd order without that. Fantastic place for sure. Love it here, best service and amazing food! I've tried a couple rolls and a couple other things and they can do it all. The chashu fried rice is so good! And the manager I assume is the coolest and always remembers my favorites and usuals. They also have a student discount which is perfect for being right by the campus. The sauce is normally a spicy mayo, but this tasted straight like some cream and mayo but it was thick and overpowering. I would order that again. Chicken Katsu curry was okay, just very watery. Asian Man in the front was very rude, didn't welcome us and was not friendly. The Asian waitress was nice and took our order promptly and food came out relatively fast. I have been a customer since my college days and back when they were located near the Ralph's. I still come on occasion but since it's been at this location, price is higher. It's very pretty with ample parking. It's pretty big actually and it's nice it has a private event room so they can cater to big groups. I've been to this location a few times throughout the years. I came recently when they just opened for dinner so the dinner rush was not there yet. Staff was very friendly. In regards to the meal, also good! But I just feel a bit pricey. The soy sauce they had seemed very dark and salty, they said it was their low sodium. Luckily, upon request they do have the gluten-free one which is much better. The Gyoza appetizer was perfect tempt and texture-I feel like it was a bit bland on this visit. The salmon slices over our sushi was fresh and tasty. My cousin did order a spicy salmon roll and said it wasn't spicy at all lol. Overall, I will be a returning customer. I didn't get the shrimp tempura roll which I think is one of their best rolls, along with the hot kiss roll. I believe at night time they have the lights off with popping music and some laser lights. PLEASE do not order from these guys. It took me 1.5+ hours to get my delivery order. I was in contact with the delivery driver the whole time and he waited well over an hour and they also gave him attitude. PLUS they didn't include any chopsticks, soy sauce, or wasabi. They changed ownership! My favorite go to rolls have been changed even though they kept the same name on them. Disappointing when I ordered and they were not the same as before. I've gone a few times since they changed ownership and the lemon roll just doesn't hit the spot anymore. It's also inconsistent. One time everything was good and another time not so much. This last time they messed up one roll and forgot about another order. They took a while to get all of our food. It was 1 roll at a time. We'd finish it and then it was back to waiting. Sushi isn't cheap so I don't see myself coming back. Back then this place was 5 stars. I've been coming here for years and it's unfortunate that it had to change. After a late arrival in San Diego, I was looking for a dinner spot close to my hotel. Tokyo Suhi Loha was right next door, so I made my way and was seated at the sushi bar. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is where this Japanese restaurant shines. I love the lights at the check-in desk. It's a beautiful, large restaurant with plenty of seating and nice decor. A nice start to a dining experience for sure. Service (1.5/5): Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. My waiter was slow to greet me---one of those experiences where you're ready to order both your food and drinks once he arrives. From there, he got part of my order wrong and never checked in on me after bringing my food and drinks. To the point where I had to ask the hostess for my bill. He essentially went MIA. Drinks (3/5): At Japanese restaurants, I typically go with a Japanese beer and some hot sake. Which is exactly what I did here. The sake could have been a little warmer, but outside of that, standard. Food (3/5): I ordered the beef gyoza but was given the pork gyoza instead. They were presented nicely in a boat bowl. While the presentation was nice, the gyoza were a bit over-fried. They tasted like your typical frozen gyoza rather than freshly made. From there, I went with some sushi. I had one of their specialty rolls with crab and scallops. It looked more like a dish rather than sushi as there was a lot of sauce and seafood surrounding the actual sushi. Though I'm not complaining, the more, the better! Unlike the gyoza, I enjoyed the sushi and it was different than any rolls I've had in the past. Our reservation was at 8:30- we were sat at 8:33 when they cleared off a table. There was 5 of us. We ordered quickly when we put in our drink orders- which was our choice as we were starving and had been seated long enough to figure out what we wanted. Our food came scattered and was not all to the table until after 9, probably closer to 9:15. We were still eating at 9:30 when a staff member we hadn't seen before came up very matter of fact/ rudely said "we're closed" then gestured/ waived over the large amount of food on our table and said "so do you want a box?". I was so put off by it- we had been there for exactly an hour and had not had our food long. I've been bartending for 6 years. I hate nothing more than when people camp out at a table after close. At my restaurant we will let people stay for too long in my opinion and even then we usually very gently give hints it's time to leave. I immediately looked online to see when they closed and it shows they close at 9:30pm. Apparently somewhere else it says 9pm. However, when you allow reservations at 8:30 and the food doesn't all hit the table until 9:15- rudely declaring that a table isn't welcome anymore is insane to me. I cannot fathom how an additional 15 minutes was so detrimental to the staff as to cause a scene about it. My little sister wanted to go out for her graduation to Tokyo specifically and was dressed in her regalia post ceremony excited for this experience. She also wanted the dessert she has got there since she was a child but obviously no offer of dessert was made as boxes were quickly tossed our way. I grew up coming here and we even remarked how it wasn't what it used to be but it was still our spot. But there was a to handle that and the way they did it was so tacky and disrespectful- you would've thought we were sitting there with empty plates for an hour. In addition we ordered food that never came and were told they stopped serving it but had to inquire about it, there was debris in our sodas, we had to ask for soy sauce multiple times, the rolls were drenched in sauce and none of the food was remarkable. Our server also left early into our meal without saying anything- we just saw her leave through the front door and then our only interactions were when we went searching for our missing item and when told to leave. Walking in, you're greeted by friendly and helpful staff and there is also bar seating where you can watch many sushi chefs make the food. With a modern Japanese vibe, To start, we ordered the Rose Roll and it was very tasty! It is similar to a Shrimp Crunch Roll , but it was topped with spicy tuna. I would totally recommend this if you are looking for a roll to share. We also had the chicken Katsu and teriyaki bento box and they were both filling and very delicious. It was perfect portions of everything. However, I found their salad dressing to be a lot sweeter than other Japanese restaurants. In addition to this, there is a misprint on their menu, according to a worker. Instead of 4 California Roll pieces, we only got two. I also found it interesting that we got miso soup as a free item, even though it's included with the bento box. Overall this was still pretty good! Friendly Service! The Tuna Carpaccio was a standout item. We even kept the sauce to use for our other items. We enjoyed it so much that we ordered another! The shishito peppers were pleasant with a nice variety of spice accompanied on the side by what tasted like a citrusy powder. They were clean and fresh, and the ponzu sauce on top with a what appeared to be a dab of sriracha was a great amount of spice for each oyster. We followed the appetizers up with two rolls. The Snow Tuna roll was rich in taste with the bluefin toro on top. The Aztec (?) had shrimp tempura which was really tasty. The sauces on the rolls had a great balance to them and were not overly sauced One of the employees named Pinky gave us great recommendations for sake and we loved both of the ones we tried. Nigori is a bit sweeter and the Ginjo is a bit more dry. She recommended we start with a Ginjo if we wanted to try both and that was a fantastic recommendation as the Nigori was more similar to the dessert wine side of the spectrum.
