We were looking for lunch after hiking at Petrified Forest National Park and found this diner on Yelp. We arrived around 1:30 on Memorial Day, and there was a sign on the door that food would arrive 20-30 minutes after ordering. That should have been our clue to look elsewhere. Though we were seated right away, it took awhile to even order our food. I didn't time how long it took to make our food, but it was probably in the estimated range. We ordered the corn appetizer hoping they could deliver that before the entrees, but no luck. The sandwiches and fries were ok, but nothing special. The dip was a little runny and the chips were kind of stale. And they serve Pepsi products so we got water. The place was decorated with a bunch of American items. Right on historic rte 66 in Holbrook AZ. Parking lot somewhat full,... a good sign. Theresa welcomed us, ushered us to a booth, and took drink orders. I ordered a garden salad and a tuna sandwich on toasted sour dough. Everything met my expectations and then some. By best friend asked Theresa, "The teriyaki bowl...is it any good?" This question, which he regularly asks, never ceases to amaze me. But, he says, sometimes they tell you it's not fresh. Get something else. Anyway, he loved it. The food was good, I have no major complaints there with what I had, maybe a little bland on the flavor. Plenty to eat though. The interior was a little odd, but it is more about the food for me. The menu size was surprising huge, with a collection of American, Mexican, and Oriental dishes--perhaps others. Usually that means that there will be some duds on the menu. We stopped in Holbrook for the night and decided to give this place a try after reading the positive reviews. My dad had the chicken fried steak and I tried the birria tacos on fry bread. Dad was very happy with his chicken fried steak but didn't eat the baked potato. Said it was a little hard still. Didn't matter, the portions are generous and he couldn't finish the steak. He enjoyed the cup of corn that came with it. I really enjoyed the elote cup that came with my meal. I wouldn't call it the best I've ever had, but it was enjoyable. The fry bread in place of tortillas really made this dish for me. I don't eat much bread, so it was a real treat. The birria and consommé were somewhat bland compared to what I'm used to, but were fine with some salt added. I enjoyed the meal and ate every bit of it, after picking off the tomatoes I didn't realize were going to be there. (I didn't read the menu much, just ordered something that looked interesting, and happen to suffer from migraines if I eat tomato) Decorations are very patriotic, showing support for Firefighters, EMS, Law Enforcement. Red White and Blue everywhere, Christmas tree with this American flag garland ribbon all around it. As a red blooded American myself, I can't find fault with it. A quaint diner spot along the AZ Route 66 that feels like a local hangout. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. They even sat and chatted with an elderly gentleman who obviously dines here often. Looking for a good diner to dig into some hot food. Found the right place. Menu was interesting. Something for everyone. Wifey went with the hot dog special and fries. Sauerkraut and catsup made it the perfect lunch. I went with the, believe it or not, liver and onions with bacon and mashed potatoes with gravy. Corn niblets on the side. Insanely good. Liver cooked perfectly just like my mother used to make it. Tender and easy to cut with a fork. Add a little A1 sauce and you have a perfect meal. 11/10 rating, but I fully understand L&O not for everyone. Restaurant was clean and set up in a typical diner fashion. Nice little place. The pancakes were fuffly and delicious along with the warmed syrup. The French toast had a good amount of cinnamon and were pretty good. They cooked the eggs over medium, perfectly. The bacon was a little thin and not as crispy as I would have liked. The breakfast potatoes were VERY well seasoned and had great flavor. Well I never thought I would see this in my life but they could not make a grilled cheese sandwich. The imitation cheese was not melted and the great value French fries were stale. Service was extremely slow and then to wait that long and get cold food was disheartening. The chicken was as dry as the Petrified Forest. Do not let the 4.1 overall review send you their way. It's 7 PM on a Monday night. This diner does not serve alcohol. I asked the waitress if the food was made from scratch and she claimed all of it was. So my husband and I ordered the chicken fried chicken with homemade gravy and mashed potatoes. Some of the food is coming out in plastic baskets with paper liner. Other food is served on a plate. The cutlery is real flatware with paper napkins. The restaurant is very clean in the dining room. It is a mixture of booths with black green vinyl seats and table and chairs with the same vinyl seat. Oddly enough, there's a Christmas tree with Fourth of July ribbon and tinsel sitting in the dining room. Today is July 8th. The chicken is breaded and fried. It has a very heavy pepper taste, which makes it a bit spicy. It does have very delicious flavor overall and it is served super hot. The vegetable of the day is corn. My mashed potatoes are delicious. However, the potatoes and the corn are both warm. I'm going to say that the gravy is not homemade. If you have your choice between white or brown, go with the brown, it has much more flavor. There is pepper in everything. The gravy, the corn, the chicken. It seems a bit excessive. Dang, I was disappointed in the food. The atmosphere is cool old style diner and the service was great. We had the mushroom Swiss burger and the Philly cheesesteak. 4.5 on the burger and 6 on the Philly. I would recommend adding a nice sauce to both sandwiches. When we were looking for a place for breakfast this morning, this seemed like the best option I could find. Again, we were not disappointed. My wife had the Denver omelette and I had the ham steak with eggs and potatoes. Right now I'm ready for a nap because my belly is full, unfortunately I got to do some driving. As we took a tour of Petrified Forest National Park and heading to Holbrook. We were hungry and needed to eat. I Yelped around Holbrook and the picture of Tonkatsu Bento caught my eyes. But also I read one of reviews who gave 1 star said they felt discriminated because they were mixed race couple. That made me think "Should I go, or should I not?" Because I'm a Japanese married to a white guy for more than 40 years. But I couldn't resist Tonkatsu and rice. Also felt a challenge if we get discriminated or not. That was a lunch time and the place was busy. We got a booth, and IMMEDIATELY GREETED by this friendly young lady. I ordered a pork cutlet bento and my husband ordered a burger, a sure bet at a new restaurant. Food took a while to come out but my tonkatsu was tender and generous! The rice was GOOD! We recently moved to Tulsa area, Oklahoma. And the rice at all the Japanese restaurants I tried were BAD! Inedible. The rice here is so much better than any of Japanese restaurants in Tulsa area. So that reviewer's assumption was proved to be wrong. Besides the food was good, the manager gave us 10% discount bc my husband was wearing a Veteran's hat. Short and sweet, we walked out without ordering. During the 15 minutes we sat in our booth we watched the waitress ignore us, walking past our table to tend to two parties who arrived later (after she and I had made eye contact). My children felt this happened because we're a mixed race family unlike the other parties (something I have never heard from them before now) but because I heard the waitress's insulting tone towards a different couple, I told them it was something more broad than race.
