We stopped in the Camaleon on our way from Phoenix to Albuquerque. It had decent reviews and sounded better than stopping at McDonalds. I had an omelette that was cooked pretty well and my boyfriend had beef tacos. Both were good! Our waitress was distracted and would forget to check on us but she was a nice girl. We could tell this is a family owned/run place. The waitresses seemed to know all the regulars by name and their orders. For Holbrook, this is a decent place to stop! read more

We were driving west on I-40 near Holbrook, Arizona and the beautiful sunrise reminded us that we should stop for breakfast. We saw the Camaleon and pulled over. We are so happy that we did. After a review of the menu we ordered a Breakfast Burrito with chorizo and a Tuna Melt. The tuna melt was an unusual choice but in Holbrook, Az during our drive from Chicago to Los Angeles, a tuna melt for breakfast just seemed right. The chorizo in the breakfast burrito was perfectly spiced with a generous amount mixed in with all the other breakfast goodness and wrapped in a warm fresh flour tortilla. So yummy! The tuna melt was a delight with a tuna salad that had the perfect mix of tuna and chopped pickles partnered with melty cheese nestled between two delicious slices of tasty toasted bread. Happenstance was kind to us in pointing us to the Camaleon for breakfast during our long drive. We loved our choices and hope that future travels take us through Holbrook again someday so that we can eat here again. Yum! read more

We stopped in on a Friday night for dinner and were able to sit right away. Friday nights are all you can eat fish night and the restaurant smelled accordingly which had us a little worried. But we stuck it out. We all ordered Mexican dishes and they were all very good. Pleasant surprise given our initial reaction. The waitstaff was attentive to our needs and were friendly. Ordered the taco plate. Beef looked weird with little color but okay. Tasted alright. Rice and beans were both burnt so I only ate one bite. Went to pay and told them I didn't eat the rice and beans. She says she'll just charge me for the tacos. $11.50 instead of $11.99, LOL. I said sure and ten minutes later when she figured out the system I hand her my card. She comes back and says since I didn't get the plate she has to charge me for the chips and salsa she brought to my table without me asking. Wow. Food was fine, no issues. The waitress, however, tried to pull a fast one on us with the tip. Original bill was $82, then she added a tip without my consent (we were 4 people) and printed off a new receipt for $94. She then had the nerve to ask me to enter a tip on the credit card machine. When I asked for an itemized receipt she was super sketchy and told me the receipt belonged to her. She finally printed one off for me and I saw that she had added $11 for tip. It was a pretty nasty move that you wouldn't catch if you weren't paying attention. I had tipped 20% using the machine so I tipped ON my tip. She pulled $11 out of the register when I complained. My wife and I enjoyed breakfast here while our car was charging across the street. We were the first to arrive on a Tuesday morning shortly after they opened at 7am. We were warmly greeted and offered our pick of any table. Their tables are spread fairly far apart for those concerned. Their menu includes both traditional and Mexican breakfasts. I went with scrambled eggs, bacon, sour dough toast and hash browns. You can substitute home fries instead of hash browns but our server said the latter were better. My wife ordered a breakfast burrito with chorizo and the recommended hash browns. Our food showed up quickly and was delicious. I literally ate everything on my plate. I especially liked their hash browns agreeing with the server. My wife couldn't quite quite finish her burrito because of how large it was. She said it was great though. We did get some homemade salsa in a bowl that added well to our meals. Service was excellent and friendly the entire time. There were three other tables occupied as we left. Perhaps folks sleep in a little bit in Holbrook. read more

First time here, we came for a late lunch. We were greeted at the door by friendly server who told us electricity had just gone out in the area. Yes, they could still accommodate us but we would need to pay cash (no problem). It was a nice day and they opened the doors. Hubby ordered a philly cheesesteak sandwich w/ fries and I had ala carte green chile chicken enchilada and a tostada, served with salsa side (Sour cream would also have been nice, I forgot to ask.) It was all quite yummy and we ate every bite. Ooops, soda machine needs electricity so we pivoted to our server's offer of a delightful lemonade. We discovered our cell phone flashlight came in handy when we went to use the Very Dark restroom. Funny experience! We did not know what to order being from out of town, but we saw what some people were eating at the neighboring table. It was two gentlemen wearing cowboy hats with their family and they seemed to be enjoying their meal immensely. We asked our waitress and she politely went over and asked them. They told her and then turned and mentioned to us, that the green chili open faced burger served with fries covered with green chili was the best they have ever had. So given their recommendation, we ordered three of them along with two sides of onion rings. Let me tell you the gentlemen were correct!!! These were the very best green chili open faced burgers we have ever had! They were delicious!!! The meat was perfectly cooked and served on top of two very fresh buns and covered with the most delicious green chili you could ever want! Perfectly spiced and very very delicious!!!! Please order what the two gentlemen advised us to order, the Open Faced Green Chili Burger!! It is the best and you will not be disappointed! This place is what America is all about! Four of us for breakfast this morning: great food, super friendly service, spotless place. I had the trio special with sausage patty, eggs and biscuits & gravy. The eggs were perfectly done, the biscuits and gravy were clearly freshly homemade. Excellent! Another diner had the special pork steak with Chile and eggs - he was completely stuffed! Our server was incredibly friendly and pleasant. It was a joy to converse wIth her. The place was spotless, including the rest room. I had the Combination plate, which came with a pinto bean tostada, a ground beef taco, and a green chili chimichanga. The food was pretty okay and weren't mind-blowing. 3 stars for that dish. However, one friend got the all-you-can-eat fish, and that was really delicious. The fish was perfectly fried, warm, and tasty, and the accompanying (tartar?) sauce was amazing!! Passing through on our move to the West Coast, we stopped at a local shop and while checking out asked for a food recommendation. This was the place that was recommended and it was really good. The salsa with the chips and salsa was a little spicier than I'm used to, but it was really good. My son and I both got enchiladas and they were very tasty. The entire menu, breakfast, lunch, and dinner seem to be available all day. Our server was super nice and very courteous. They seem to have an all-you-can-eat fish fry on Friday evenings. We did not get the fish, but it smelled amazing! I don't know when we'll be back in the area, if ever, but we'll certainly give them another visit if we do come back. read more

This one was tough for me. We were charging at the BK next door but wanted a better meal than fast food. We decided to check this place out based on the other reviews and stronger Yelp score. When we walked in we were told to grab a seat wherever and that they'd be over to take out order. Our server was a nice guy and asked what we wanted to drink. I asked for coffee and was told they were out. Another guy asked for a milkshake and was told they were out of ice cream, he then asked for the strawberry waffle and was told they were out of strawberries. I get it that supply chain issues are a bitch right now but damn. My son's open faced chili burger was solid though and my green chili burger was good as well. $25 out the door for dinner for 2 including tip is a deal and earns them a 3rd star. read more

The Camaleon provided a wonderful lunch as we charged at the Tesla station on our way to Moab. What a hidden gem of a restaurant! This place is definitely worth a stop in if you are passing by. The interior is kind and friendly. The service is welcoming and made us feel at home. We ordered the chicken guacamole sandwich with fries and onion rings, and let me tell you, it was perfection. The fries were cooked perfectly and the sandwich and the smooth guacamole balanced out the juicy, grilled chicken. The portions were large for a great price. Making sure to post a positive review since many negative reviews are posted. We tried Camaleon even after reading the reviews and are extremely glad we did. We had stellar service and loved the food. I'm a fan of spicy Mexican food and it was perfect. Had a kick but not too hot. Will be back next time in town. SHITSHOW!! Obese owner came jiggling out into the parking lot waving her bleeding hand and yelled at me, because I was looking for a menu outside! The tubby, large woman wore NO mask, had tattoos down her cleavage and her ring finger and pinky were swaddled in oozing red bleeding gauze (is that allowed in kitchens in Arizona?). There's garbage on the window sills. The note in the window said the place had a 'CRISIS': in the restaurant 6 people wore no masks.. There's tape and Saran-wrap cordoning off parts of the room. There's plastic swaddling a crusty cash register. It looked like a morgue! I've got refined sense. But here: it looked like the room was just quarantined by the local Health Dept. due to an outbreak. The sign was illegible and CRAZILY, FREAKISHLY noted with misspelling. There's trucks hauling hay, junk, and filth ALL over. And. AND: there's no menu outside. Idiots! Camaleon? Where did you learn to spell. Which part of 'wearing a mask' to prevent infections, do you morons not grasp? Keep taping stuff in plastic. Inexpensive, no fuss resto with typical diner fare and traditional Mexican food. Full of locals dining in, and doing takeaway too - which is always a promising sign. It's like Chinese restaurants - you judge them by the amount of Chinese people eating there - I say that because my fam is part Chinese :) We grabbed a burger and tuna melt for the road - all under $20. Super filling and satisfying, and hands down better than the fast food options down the road unless that's your thing. Service was quick, and professional. I'm throwing in an extra star to our three star dining experience for the simple fact that they were the ONLY PLACE OPEN for indoor dining. We were greeted by 10+ locked doors before we found this one open diner in Holbrook. The prices are VERY reasonable and the portion sizes good. The menu is a mix of Mexican and American, neither of which are outstandingly executed, but both of which are serviceable. We ordered a chili relleno, the mushroom burger, and some tacos. Stopped here for breakfast on 3/13/2023. Food was mostly great - oatmeal, waffles, bacon, had browns, and pancakes as big as waffles were all excellent. The only fail were the scrambled eggs - more like a dry omelette gone bad. Service was good but can be a little slow when busy, but not bad. Prices were also excellent. Do not pass on this small somewhat hidden gem. We would definitely go back and recommend to anyone wanting a good breakfast. read more

There aren't many options in the town of Holbrook but this a good no-frills one! About a mile off the route 66 exit, you can get some American or Mexican options. The chicken enchilada with rice and beans tasted more authentic than the meal I had in Flagstaff. The chicken tasted homemade in a good way and not dry surprisingly. The chili relleno was also a good option because it wasn't spicy and had just enough dough. Very affordable compared to a lot of the overpriced touristy places. They had a strange drivethru on the side of the building and also had a little store selling ponchos. The service also was fine. I'm glad we decided to come here instead of Burger King or Denny's! read more
