I've driven by this diner more times than I was comfortable with so I made it a point to stop in for breakfast on Sunday morning. Our party was comprised of two ladies and two babies and the staff were very quick to help bring us two high chairs and put us at an out-of-the-way table and continued making us feel welcome by making faces to keep the kiddies entertained. The food was good - diner food at its finest and most basic. I had the body builder omelet with homefries and whole wheat toast. My only complaint is that they don't butter the toast for you but that, I guess, is a pretty minor complaint. Will definitely stop by again when in the area! read more

A modern day warrior Mean, mean stride Today's Tom Sawyer Mean, mean waffle. you see what i did there? this was my second time at the tom sawyer, and quality wise, its on the higher end of the diner spectrum. the first time it seemed everyone in our party, 12+, went for the burger plate. personally, i opted for the bacon cheeseburger. it was savory, meatie and the just the right amount of char flavor. the rest of our table agreed with their picks too, with sauteed mushrooms being boasted with every bite. nice steakie fries too. one person got a waffle for dinner and that got my gears working, however it goes without saying, breakfast anytime. thats not too surprising at a diner of all places, but i recall the unfortunate experience of being shut out last time i frequented a diner in smalbany. now the last time i was here, which happened to be this past sunday, we were again a large party, 10 this time, breakfast was on the menu literally. i of course had to go with a waffle, natch! now as you know you can get their waffle anytime, but for breaffie, its waffle all the way. i ordered mine with their sausage links and they did not disappoint in any way, nice spice quotient, not too much fatty good overall. the syrup flowed as did the coffee, and service both times was pretty spot on, no charm, but accuracy instead. this is where i segue into 'if you had to deal with 10+ members of my family you probably did a xanax in the locker room' speech regarding our waiter. we sat way after the check was paid and finally the manager finally kicked us out, claiming a party was on route. this was by 1130 and the place had thinned out, but we were taking up real estate. *extra credit* now, the first time i was there i was drawn in by their bakery case, in this situation, the almond horn! if you see in them in the case on your way in totally eat one of them before you go out. i didnt luck out into the horn the second time i was here, but thats ok as we had a box of b&w's from the rockland bakery in the car for the ride home. read more

Haven't been to this diner since before it burned down and was renovated, therefore years ago. (It used to be good) Went in for breakfast today and was not wowed. Person at front was very nice and welcoming and the space and ambience nice but our server was not good and neither was the food. Pancakes were dry, scrambled eggs were dry and were pretty much patties not really scrambled eggs. The toast was burnt (i mean c'mon...toast? Even though we were a full table we did not have enough waters, nor napkins not silverware- we had to keep taking from other tables. The chocolate pancakes were also dry and although they had many chocolate chips in them, they were not all melted therefore making those pancakes even drier! Home Fries were just OK. The service really could have been better. They took forever to take our orders, the drinks took a while to come out and the food even longer. Yet the check was placed on our table before we were even done! Again, very disappointed. Wish I could at least give three stars but honestly we go to a diner for food, especially breakfast and it was pretty bad. Bad food + bad service = 2 stars Oh I should add bacon was good (very, very thin and crispy and the portions were good). For breakfast they only have a two sided menu with a lot of it including coffee drinks. Don't get me wrong... the food that they do serve is fresh and good but in NJ which is over flooding with diners you have to be at the top of your game to set yourself a part. This place is solid, but nothing special. The inside is clean and the staff is friendly and quick... but just nothing special. I visited Tom Sawyer Diner with a couple of co workers for lunch the other day for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised. I feel like a diner in NJ can be really anything and you never know what to expect. Everything on the menu looked very good but I was really in the mood for an omelet, I was in a diner so, why not? They made me an omelet without hesitation and it was very good and the home fries hit the spot during this work day lunch :) I really liked that Tom Sawyer was spacious and clean, the staff was very friendly and the service was fast. I also felt that the price was reasonable as my dish was about $10. I'm looking forward to trying something new on the menu next time. read more

This is not my first visit to this diner and it will take a lot to get me back. I went for breakfast and was overwhelmed by the prices. The pancakes were $9.99. Absurd. Inlets start off at $9.99. I decided if I was going to spend $$$ on food that I would take a look at the full menu. When I saw the price of a plain salad, starting off at $13.99 I was astonished. It was a simple salad with no meat. So I ordered a roll with butter. It was about the same price I would pay at a deli. My roll was stale. I would think there was enough turn over in this diner that they wouldn't serve stale rolls. The coffee is $1.99 for an endless cup. What is endless is the wait for a refill. Just your average diner. No serious complaints but nothing crazy outstanding. If you are waking up on a weekend and want some breakfast and a coffee, yes this is your go to place for that. My recent visit I was a little disappointed with the service. Our waiter was nice but my water glass was empty and I never got a hold of him for a refill the whole meal. Same with coffee. Bad experience overall. 4 of us, my wife and 2 kids, came here on a Friday night for an evening dinner. Wife had soup and salad. I had chicken panini and kids had kids meals. First of all, where on earth would you find $11 kids meals? This diner, that's where. My daughter complained that the chicken she received was a bit "off". That was my first indication. My panini arrives and I swear it was chewier than bubble gum. Horrible, really. And the fries? Zero salt. Which basically means they were flavorless. By the way, I ordered an unsweetened iced tea and had to ask the waiter 3 or 4 times for sweetener. My kid joked, "Look Dad, the salt bounces right off the fries!" Funny but not funny. Top 5 worst dining experiences of my life. I had been looking forward to dining with my family including my daughter and friends and their baby, and the waitress we had ruined every second of the meal. The host in the front and the woman setting up our table never mentioned they were closing soon, instead they welcomed us and set the table, and we situated the babies after a long hot day enjoying Fourth of July weekend activities with the kids. The waitress came over and made it a point multiple times before we could even pick up the menu that they were closing soon. Suddenly the table was all under pressure to order, and we couldn't even think between the kids and this waitress up our butts to order. I ordered grilled chicken and fruit for the babies to eat and she had to make it a point that the chicken was large - I don't care if it's the size of an ostrich! Just give me the order please. Anyways one of the babies coughed up a bit at the table and she said she didn't know how to help and scrambled away and kept looking at us from the kitchen door. She literally was acting like a mosquito hovering around. The chicken was undercooked for the kids and my wife's meal was underwhelming. WOW I can't believe I just paid 45 dollars for a check with a chicken panini with MYSTERY meat on It and to insanely rude people at that. At the end of our meal the lady asked how our meal was my mom said her omelette was good(you can't mess up eggs) however I said I didn't enjoy mine. The woman than proceeded to tell me it was because I changed the meat on the sandwich. The sandwich I ordered came with grilled chicken on the menu and I changed it to crispy when I placed my order with our waiter. There is still absolutely no reason why that chicken should be mystery meat! Grilled or crispy makes no difference. For $12.95 I expect my sandwich to have chicken breast. Sorry that's not asking a lot. I never write negative reviews but that woman was incredibly rude and their food is expensive and NASTY. My 3 year old even said his pancakes were "icky" but I let that one go. Food was okay, but was charged for a refill on a soda when the full menu said refills were free. We asked, and the waiter said that policy changed a month ago. Second, when the bill came, the beverage price was increased as we were paying. They took our receipt which was lower, and when my husband asked for it back to show the owner, the cashier said the receipt was gone. Then they showed us a different menu- only items on 2 pages- and said here is the price for beverages. So this review is solely based off of the breakfast served at the Tom Sawyer diner. Being from NJ I am some what of a diner expert. I come her every few months for breakfast with my sister and the food is always good. Probably one of the better breakfasts you can get in Paramus. Today I got the pancakes with sausage and a side of eggs. Everything was really good, pancakes were fluffy and served with whipped butter, eggs were cooked perfectly, and the sausage at this diner is so good. The waitstaff was ok but there was some confusion on who our waiter was, two guys came to take our drink order and the second seemed upset that we had already placed the order with his coworker. Furthermore, the person who ended us helping us talked very quietly so we could barely hear what he was saying/asking. Overall I am always satisfied with the meal I have here, and you can't beat the pricing you get at diners. read more

Two summer ago, my son and I passed by the restaurant. It looks beautiful from outside. So we decided to get in for an early dinner. I already forgot what I ordered as my entree. But I ordered a soup and a steak for my son. He always love steaks and never ordered kids meal since he turns 7. He always takes home if there is any left-over. I told server medium for my son's steak, I specifically said pink. It came out well done with part of it burned black. We told our server who told the owner. The owner insisted it is medium despite the obvious opposite. When he saw me take a picture, he changed from being impolite to rude. He told me to pay for the soup and leave. What is most disturbing is this intimidated my son. I hate slamming restaurants, much less after just one visit. I know it can be challenging to do any business, especially restaurants. But it is that disturbing that I still remember. I remember how disrespectful and harsh the owner was in front of a young child and a customer who just stated the fact. After reviewing the 10 or 12 dinners from the special daily menu I ordered one only to find out they were out. So I asked, "what do you have"? The "TS" as we affectionately call it, is a kinda pricey diner that I've got on weekly, sometimes bi-weekly rotation. We're treated like family here by the wait staff/hosts/owners alike so it's a lovely experience every time. Nice clean, classy, nouveau diner atmosphere. Fresh ingredients in everything (Greek salad!!! Homemade veggie burgers!!!), whimsical breakfast options for when you don't give a hoot about the calories (French toast napoleon!!! Specialty omelettes with stuffings like prosciutto and avocado!!!), yummy homemade marinara sauce (mozzarella sticks!!!), ginormous desserts (chocolate chip cookies!!!), a "coffee bar" (cappuccinos with rock candy sticks!!!). Not to mention your standard diner fare like really good fries, solid breakfast, and yummy anything fried. My only complaints? Wow. Pricey. We almost got up and left as we didn't intend on spending $40 (minimum) for a quick dinner at a diner. We didn't, but we thought about it. It took a while to get service, but once we did it was pretty seamless. Seeking the cheapest vegetarian options , we opted for the soup and salad combo at $10. It featured a cup of soup and a side salad. Nothing special. We also has the guacamole burger, which they were kind enough to make with a veggie patty, no bun and no fries. On the menu, it says "no substitutions", but it was great of them to be able to accept small changes. It was fine. We managed to get out of there in under $30, which included one fountain beverage.
