I really like Tomatina at 5245 Prospect Rd, San Jose, CA 95129. I've been coming here for years as I find the service to be excellent and the pasta dishes all fresh made to order using quality ingredients. The sauces really are perfectly paired to each dish. The salmon and garlic rolls is a top favorite with my friends and guests. I also enjoy the lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, ravioli, salads and the Italian sodas. Honorable mention to their dessert menu. The restaurant is clean and well mantaintained. My usual server, Linda, always provides Superior Service. The luncheon specials are amazing and a great value. This restaurant has been here for a long time but I've never tried it. My friend and I came in for the lunch special where you get an app and an entre for about $14. I wouldn't go here if you're looking for something different or special, but my Italian piadine (hot flatbread sandwich melt) was warm and had a decent amount of filling. I would have given 5 Star if the quantity of Spaghetti & Meatballs had more Noodle. The Meatballs were Good, the Sauce Delicious, but why do they give you hardly enough Noodle? For $ 21.50 , they could have filled the bowl with Noodle. I dont get it, Spaghetti Noodles are cheap so why they cant give enough Noodles to fill the bowl for over 21 dollars, Geez. Either the cook does not want to cook more Noodle or somehow their Noodles are more expensive than other restaurants? Even if they provide cheap noodle it would still be good, but giving hardly and Noodles for 21 dollars just prevents customers from coming back. I do give them credit for having good Marinara sauce. Their salad is good too ( and decent price, just that Spaghetti dish is lacking in Noodle). Im not sure why I tipped $ 5 dollars. The noodle is so lacking that after I thought about it, I should have been cheap with my tip ( just as they were cheap with giving out Noodles). The very first time Dad wanted to try here, I was not hungry so I only got the cheaper meatballs for $ 12 something. It was awful and sauce was worse than store bought. But the 2nd time we came, I was not hungry again and got a good salad that was worth it, and Dad ordered the 21.50 Spaghetti with Meatballs, thats when I notice they dont fill the bowl and not enough Noodles. So we came a 3rd time to give it another chance and again, the Noodles for the 21.50 Spaghetti were lacking. The sauce was Delicious the 2nd and 3rd time and they do give enough sauce, just not Noodle. And they do give 3 medium/large meatballs which were good. To make it worth the 21.50, they just need to give more Spaghetti Noodle or I guess the only way to get it is just to bring your own noodle and add it to the dish..after trying the full sized portions and getttng ripped off on the Noodle twice, it makes it less fun to come. We came here for my mom's birthday with a few friend and family at lunch on a Thursday. There is a dearth of good Italian in Cupertino and this oft forgotten gem came to mind. I forgot how good it was. The lunch pick two special is a good deal and the portions are very generous and priced right, especially for a larger party. There was one waiter who was also the host, bartender, and busser so service was slow. It was quiet since it was only our party and a small table for two during the entire time we were there. I ordered the calamari appetizer ($15), the luncheon special of Caesar salad and Mama's spaghetti & meatballs ($13.50). My friends ordered the luncheon special of Minestrone soup and Mama's spaghetti & meatballs, and a regular entree of meatballs & bread, with a side of Caesar salad. The calamari was good and came with two dipping sauces. I like tentacles and was happy to see them amidst the rings. My spaghetti was a tad light on the sauce which made it dry, and a little too al dente to the bite. I like my spaghetti to be saucy so I asked our server if I could have a small bowl of more sauce. She happily complied and soon my spaghetti was to my liking. Service was nice and friendly. Where I was sitting, it was cold. I had to put my scarf and coat back on to be comfortable. Will I return? We ordered Tomatina via DoorDash and have both been raving about it since, so I'm shocked at the low reviews here. I wanted chicken parm and it exceeded expectations by a long shot. Huge portion of chicken, spaghetti and spinach were also done well. Bf got chicken marsala and also reported that it was good. I'm not sure why they're rated so low, I love this place! I went with my dad this time, and we got their garlic rolls and their onion foccacia bread. Their garlic rolls are thick and satisfying and soo good. Their foccacia wasn't oniony at all admittedly, but it was still good bread. My dad got their shrimp pomodero and he loved it! He got a bunch of shrimp, they didn't skimp out, and usually seafood pastas don't come with tomato sauce, but this one did and it was actually a little spicy. He loved it! I got their cheese ravioli with creamy pesto, and it was great as always. Excuse the bites taken out of the photos lol. For dessert we got their dessert trio-- the cheesecake was solid, the spumoni was sooo good, and the tiramisu was a bit soggy so it wasn't a favorite but we still enjoyed the experience. Service was a bit slow, but we were having a good time and could have gotten our server faster if we needed to. Enjoyed late lunch/early dinner on Saturday. We've been to Santa Clara and San Mateo location but this was our first time to visit West SJ location. When we go here, the resta was not crowded but one minus star for the wait time we experienced to be served. All servers we encountered were friendly and attentive. The main reason for writing this review is for the insulting dish we were served called fried calamari. There isn't much difference between the before and after pictures I posted because there wasn't much difference. The pieces of calamari were smaller than the breading. We had to crush the coating between our fingers to actually find pieces of calamari. If this is the best fried calamari they can do, the should take it off their menu. We were insulted with what they served us. Other parts of our meal.....Mediterranean Salad was tasty. Minestrone had the usual vegetables but the broth/sauce tasted only of sweetened canned tomatoes, no garlic,, no onion, no spices. Meatballs were average at best. Been going to Tomatina's for 20 years ago. Food and atmosphere has always been great. What I wanna talk about is this seasonal item: Tomatina's Detroit style pizza IS THE BIZNESS! It's a lil shorter in height than what I'm used to eating in terms of Detroit style pizzas but the burnt cheese across the crust is AMAZING! It's crispy and flaky after each bite. I called today to place my usual order, and the person who answered was very, very rude. I could hardly understand what she was saying. I am extremely upset by how this call was handled. However the food was was okay during my visit. The garlic rolls were kinda stale and my lasagna was still cold in the middle. The spaghetti and meatballs was good; spaghetti were just mediocre but the meatballs were flavorful and tender. It's been maybe 5 years since I've had Italian food from Tomatina so I thought what the heck, let's go try some again and see how take out is from here. I ordered the calamari, baked penne bolognese, and spaghetti and meatballs. The calamari was actually very delicious, but the lemon and garlic aioli was something left to be desired. It seemed like the ratios were off, but the dip was rather sweet which was a bit strange to my partner and I. The baked penne was probably the best pasta dish out of the two, the sauce was very flavorful, although sadly because it was to-go, part of the cheese had started to cool and harden. The spaghetti and meatballs, were promising but we ended up ignoring most of pasta and going in for the meatballs. They were really moist and had the perfect seasoning. The sauce was quite plain and had nothing too much going on frankly. Perhaps it was an off day, but I know I've had better from Tomatina.
