We were picking up a meal from IHOP and saw this on the way there. We've been passing by this doughnut shop for years now and it's a first time for us to try this place. They have amazing donuts and whenever I get a sugar craving and see donuts, I can't say no lol This place is unassuming, has an iconic sign and cute inside with a few tables if you like to dine in. They are the best within our 2 mile radius I think. Just sad that they don't sell lotto coz most doughnut places has them. The two places I go to has them so it's like a one-stop-shop. I can tell that they always have it fresh cause considering that there is not much on their display stand, it means that the selection will be gone for the day so they can make fresh new batches the next day. Since there's just the two of us(hubby), we got half a dozen doughnuts with 2 of each - chocolate, glazed and sugar plus a dozen of doughnut holes. I know that's still a lot for the two of us hahaha Oh boy! My eyes were bigger than my stomach That's bad! From now on, we will come here for the donuts and also the price. I just noticed that they cost less for a dozen compared to other ones in town. The service I can't say much. The young lady who assisted us was not mean nor rude but wasn't welcoming either. Ok it's been a year since I wrote a review on this place and I have to give an update because they have really improved on their customer service. And I am going to give credit when credit is due. As Yelp reviewers we have a duty to check back on the business and find out if they made an effort to improve. And in this case they certainly have. There were already a few construction workers ordering their morning coffees and getting their breakfasts so I waited for the young cashier to call me forward. Tommy's is small with only a few tables for customers, the corners and shelves crowded with various menus, donut boxes, and other supplies(but I've noticed this is the case for most family owned donut shops.) Reallllllyy LOVE these donuts BUT!!!! Some have been tasting like Cleaner like pine sol or whatever they use to mop the floors. The chemical is seeping into their donuts:(!!! The only smell once you walk into the store thats all you smell is mop cleaner. Texture of the chewy donuts are amazing i think they need to dilute their mop solution with water, air/fan out the chemical smell or mop after hours when there absolutely no donuts or food around. This is the cutest little donut spot I have ever seen it's definitely a hole in the wall! My bf and I always overlooked this place until one morning we were really hungry and on the road and decided to spot by and check this place out. When we got there there was this cute little white dog outside dressed up, super friendly!! We came in my bf ordered a breakfast sandwich and I just ordered myself a donut, I wasn't super hungry. The donut was good and you can tell it was freshly made and my bf loved his sandwich! I tried their hot chocolate and honestly it wasn't the best, sadly. But their customer service is very on point!!! The cashier was really helpful and had mentioned to us that they open everyday at 5:30 AM to 3 PM. They are open everyday of the week and 364 days of the year they are only day they are closed is on New Year's Day. Which I was surprised to hear because most places are closed some days of the week. The large Tommy's sign is severely faded, the patch of ground surrounding the sound was unkept-littered with cigarette butts and small bits of trash, the paint on the building is badly faded and what appeared to be a donut sign adhered to the front of the building looked like it was punch sits broken. The place clearly looks like the owner doesn't care. We ordered glazed and chocolate frosting, old fashions and sprinkles. Donuts were large, fresh and tasty. The woman was ready to serve us, not overly friendly. Day 2 they were dry. They sell a variety of coffee in air pots and refrigerated drinks. As a Hayward native I've always driven past Tommy's, it always was closed by the time I got there, what can I say.. I'm not a morning person but I am a donut person! I dropped by today 11/25 (open 5am-2pm) and let me tell you I'm mad, mad I've never stopped in early enough! these donuts are DELICIOUS. Probably the best donuts I've had, super soft and fresh. The lady was also very nice! Ample parking, they do take tap to pay! I ended up getting one maple bar for myself and a sugar twist for my mom. 4th of July and I wanted a donut after early morning shopping at Safeway. We head over to Rudy's in Castro Valley, closed. That other place over on Redwood Rd, closed. Hmmm. Wonder if Tommy's is open? Hey look! There's a few cars parked in front. Let's check it out. The building is looking a bit tired. The signage is faded and one of the signs in front is cracked with a large piece missing. Stepping inside, we're pleased to find a wide variety of donuts available. There's a couple of customers in front of us and a couple more walk in behind. We better not dawdle. The server asks what we would like. I ordered an Apple Fritter and a Cinnamon Twist. She says $4.00. I give her the money. She gives me the donuts with a smile and a thank you. Somehow the donuts feel lighter than they looked. I'm often disappointed by overweight, undercooked Apple Fritters with hardly an apple to be found. Not with this delicious morsel today! First bite, apple! Second bite, apple! I'm not going to say apple on every bite but this Fritter was a winner. Why light in weight? Because it wasn't so dense that the center was still raw. No! This was a terrific Fritter. She marvelled on how light her Cinnamon Twist was. Not rock candy hard with glaze. A slight cinnamon flavor to tease your taste buds.
