Tommy's Mexican Restaurant and I go way back, so bear with me while I share the short version of the story. When I moved to San Francisco about 30 years ago, a dear friend and colleague (who has since passed away) invited me to an after-work gathering there for one of Tommy's famous tequila-tasting classes. It was a great way to meet my new coworkers and get to know people outside the office. Over the years, I went many more times. Then life changed, jobs changed, and somehow twenty years went by without a visit, until yesterday. I happened to be in the neighborhood, thought of my late friend, and decided to stop in for a bite and a drink in her memory. I sat at the bar, where you can see all the "good stuff" (read: tequila). The current owner, Julio Bermejo, happened to be there, and we chatted for a few minutes. He told me this year marks their 60th anniversary and mentioned how people's habits have changed, young folks don't go out for drinks the way they used to. Bar traffic has dropped a lot compared to the old days, but the restaurant is still doing fine, and yes, they still offer their tequila classes. And that's the thing about Tommy's: it's not just a restaurant, it's a piece of San Francisco history. Tommy's was opened in 1965 by Tomas ("Tommy") and Elmy Bermejo, who slowly introduced authentic dishes from their native Yucatán. That's what makes Tommy's special. They're not just serving "Mexican food", they're serving Yucatecan cuisine. You'll find all the classics, but the real standouts are the regional dishes, like their famous Chile Rellenos and specialties such as Poc Chuc and Pollo Pibil. It's comfort food that has been perfected over decades. Then came their son, Julio, who completely changed the bar world. He's a tequila expert and decided early on to use only 100% agave tequila (their liquor license dates back to 1976). He invented the now-famous "Tommy's Margarita," which skips triple sec and uses pure agave nectar instead. It's simple, clean, and so good that bartenders around the world make it today. What started as a small family spot with great home-style recipes has become known as the "epicenter of tequila in the United States." And yet, despite the fame, it still feels like a neighborhood place run by a family that wants you to feel welcome, enjoy great food, and drink some of the best tequila you'll ever taste. I love this place! The vibe is so welcoming and the staff was super attentive and friendly. And, the food was Amazing! I got the chicken enchilada with green sauce - i ate everything! I hadn't been to Tommy's for years since I don't live in the area now. I asked a friend to meet me there for lunch. We got such a warm, friendly greeting. The service was great. The food was a delicious as ever. Everyone was friendly. I asked the hostess/cashier if she was related to the late Tommy. Turns out she's his daughter, Elme. I remember when her mother and father would greet guests, always with a smile. Her mom is doing fine. My friend was given a Tommy's T-shirt (they didn't have one in my size). My husband and I enjoy dining at Tommy's restaurant. The ambiance is fun, especially at the bar!!! The staff are incredibly friendly and the lovely woman, owner always is welcoming and kind. We love ordering the guacamole, as an appetizer, which is delicious. We love the complimentary salads. We also love ordering Cheese Enchiladas with Tomatollo sauce and Chiles Rellenos. It has been years since we went there and remebered it being a good place for Mexican food. We went in and were seated right away. Water, chips and salsa served right away but after quite a few minutes I had to summon somebody to take our orders. So very disappointed in the quality of food and prices. I originally was going to have a single chicken enchilada plate for $16.00 but ordered two enchiladas which cost $24.00. Chunks of unseasoned chicken breast wrapped in a tortilla and covered in a sauce. Wife had chicken chimichanga and it came with the same unflavored dried chicken. We both had $16.00 house margaritas which were good but served in the same type of glass our water came in, not the margarita glasses you get in other Mexican restraunts. They immediately seated us down and you can see it was a very popular spot. We were charged $8.95 for extra salsa (que what?!), something that has never happened before, an extra $3 for less than a quarter cup of cooked rice after I asked for no beans on my combo platter, and a total bill of $93 for two people, not including tip (this incl. $32 for two tacos and one cheese enchilada, $29 for a carne asada plate, $16 for a thimble-sized margarita, and the aforementioned $9 for extra salsa + tax). We were supposed to get tortillas (they never arrived), never had our water refilled, and failed to get asked-for salt on the rim of my wife's margarita. Seriously, though, over $100 (incl. tip) for two at a Mexican restaurant? Nope, never again. read more

This place changes my mind about Mexican food. I thought I'm not into Mexican good and now I love it!! The chips and salsa that come with the table with tasty. We added the guacamole which is even better. It looks plain but the flavor is probably the best one I've ever had. I'm not a Margarita person. The longer time passes and I visit Tommy's Mexican Restaurant, the more I appreciate it. It's a family owned restaurant known for margaritas but they also serve 1950's-style California Mexican platters (similar to a Tex Mex, lots of cheese). Sometimes I just want an enchilada plate, and local taquerias don't put love into their sauces the same way as Tommy's. The restaurant interior has funky decor, and after COVID their dining room has shrunk in size. One positive about the smaller dining room is better quality service and faster service; also closer proximity to the bar. The review is a 3.5 but I am rounding up because I want to see them succeed and stay open. It's been a tough time for local businesses. read more

So bland, so bland, and so watery. There's something strange about the ground beef here that has the texture of runny tasteless beef and tastes so bland that it's weird. The beans were just as bad. The rice was fluffy but not flavorful. The guacamole was watery and just okay...once again bland. The fried beef taco also didn't have flavor per my friend. Skip the weird salad with salsa as it's just watery leftover lettuce bits. One of the worst horchatas too. The only saving grace is the flan. We will not be back. read more

This is a super-solid Mexican place with a warm, homestyle feel. I was first impressed with the safety standards of the restaurant - we were asked for vaccinate verification immediately upon entering, all of the booths had plastic dividers between them, and all staff were (consistently) masked and friendly. As for the food, there were no disappointments. The salsa was very good, nicely blended with a good amount of heat (noticeable but not overwhelming). We ordered some guacamole, which was substantial in portion size and onion-forward in its flavor. The chips were fresh and tasty. I ordered the Yucatan tamals, which werethick and warm - it was comfort food rather than a dazzling display of Tex-Mex flavor. Even better was my gf's chicken quesadilla, which was flavorful and full of meat (and served with additional guacamole) - I had leftovers yesterday for breakfast and they were still delicious. I love sitting at the bar to have a drink and it's always a chill, friendly atmosphere where people are sure to strike up conversation. Excellent margaritas- not too sweet, gorgeous fresh lime squeezed right in front of you. Food is not bad, but nothing amazing to write home about. No food has ever been bad, but in a city like SF with so many amazing Mexican restaurants there are certainly more interesting options. That being said, I have never not cleaned my plate here! I'm here at Tommy's Mexican Restaurant continuing my tour of Bay Area iconic restaurants led by my friend who grew up in the Bay Area. Tommy's has been here since 1965, which is almost 55 years! Way before I was born! If a restaurant can last that long here in SF where 80% or so of new restaurants fail in the first 3 years, that's really something. It's been the same location here right next to one of my fave Thai restaurants Kahn Toke that's been here for at least 40 years! Parking is a pain in the ass out here on Geary, so be warned. We took a Uber from the East Bay. Tommy's is known for their massive Tequila collection, so order something you never heard of instead of that normal cheap shots stuff. The bartenders can tell you all about Tequilas. The food is pretty decent here too. You can stick with the familiar or go with maybe something you never had before. This place can get crowded on weekends so no it's not a little quiet restaurant. The food we ordered was quite tasty as were the Tequilas! No driving for us! Service was decent, not rushed or too slow. I just wish the parking was better in this area! I'm glad I got to visit this iconic SF restaurant! read more
