Oh my beloved Tommy's (by the office) how much I adore visiting you and starting my day off with your big, fluffy, stuffed breakfast tacos. Anytime work sends me back to SA you are on my must do list. Typically a "walk in and sit where ya like" situation, I've never had an issue on a weekday morning grabbing a seat with no wait. On more busy and peak hours they may have a waitlist, so be warned. Typically I grab an unsweet tea and while they grab that, I make my final taco decisions. Be warned that the tacos typically are quite sizable so I have found myself showing restraint, here of late, and only ordering two of their amazing breakfast taco offerings. My current obsessions include their chiliquilas tacos with guac, papa ranchera egg and cheese, the migas taco, or my old reliable: potato/egg/cheese/guac. No matter what I've ordered I have always enjoyed my meal and left more than full and ready to tackle the day. Also the green salsa they have on their tables is amazing, use it on everything, you're welcome. Service I've experienced has always been friendly and relatively quick, without being overbearing or leaving me wanting/needing things. Start to finish, Tommy's has easily earned its spot in my regular rotations when in SA, and while this could have happened based on their tacos alone, the service, quality, and overall experience of this location also pulls its weight when it comes to building my customer loyalty. read more

Food: Solid overall. Everything was hot and fresh. The chicken was a little overcooked but it was still very flavorful. Service: When I first walked in I wasn't greeted with the best approach. Dropped my car at the Honda dealership and on a total whim thought, "Why not try Tommy's?" I had never been, had zero expectations... and honestly, I'm glad I walked in. First thing I notice? The place is super clean. Second thing? They're blasting 80s music at 8am, which instantly set the tone. I'm a big 80s fan, so that alone already had me smiling. It's definitely not your usual quiet morning coffee spot like The Standard, Shotgun House, or El Tigre, but that was the whole point...I wanted some good ole Tex-Mex comfort. I ordered my classic chorizo and egg plate, and she went for the Caldo de Pollo. The food came out hot and everything tasted fresh. My chorizo was perfect, flavorful without being salty, and best of all, not a greasy mess. The handmade corn tortillas were amazing, and the papas with refried beans hit exactly how they should. Her Caldo de Pollo was already solid, but once we added pico de gallo, lemons (a must), and a few dashes of pepper, it turned into a whole vibe. And the coffee? You already know...coffee at a Tex-Mex spot just hits different. Strong, hot, comforting. What really sealed it, though, was the service. The staff was genuinely friendly and fast, the kind of people that make you feel taken care of without hovering. Overall, Tommy's on Silicon Dr absolutely delivered. Before heading to an estate sale in the area, the Mrs. and I stopped here for some breakfast tacos. The place was packed but we were able to find an empty table with no wait. Our waitress soon followed to offer menus and take our drink order. I opted for a barbacoa taco and a carne guisada taco. I started with the carne guisada first. It didn't have many pieces of meat, and the gravy was not seasoned like at other places. The barbacoa taco was filled with a lot of meat, but also onions and cilantro. However, it was somewhat bland. I was hoping salsa would help bring more flavor, but it was weak and not terribly spicy. The only thing I was impressed by was the tortillas. Not sure if I will make it back here soon as there are so many other options that offer better food. read more

My husband and I stopped here for a quick bite while out running errands. I wasn't really hungry, but did order chips and guacamole. He had the ehilada with carne guisada plate. My husband said his food was very good and scarfed it up. The flour tortillas were pillowy and soft, being made in-house. They were certainly among the best I've had. The salsa was authentic and hot (spicy), but not insanely so. Both the red and green were tasty and the chips were crispy. The guacamole was not all that. In fact, it reminds me of that "Wholly Guacamole" the sell in containers at HEB. It's not awful, but shouldn't be served in restaurants. I'm not saying this was that particular product, but it certainly wasn't made from fresh haas avocados. There were no chunks of avocado in it and it's texture was more of a pasty consistency. Our waitress was outstanding. She promptly served us and made sure we had everything we needed. The only other negative thing was that evidently they have no public restrooms. The sign on the door stated as much. At first I thought that applied to non-customers, but after looking around I found no sign of any restrooms. That's surprising and the first time I've ever eaten in a place that has no public restrooms. We'll certainly keep this on our list of Mexican places to get a quick bite. read more

Stopped by Tommy's while getting tires put on next door by Discount Tire. Cool, informal vibe inside and a bit dark. Classic Tex-Mex greasy spoon with exactly the fare you expect. Service is good, the ladies are all very nice. Had the barbacoa taco and the migas taco. Both decent, nothing to write home about. The migas had lots of egg, while the barbacoa appropriately had enough grease oozing out to lube a tractor. (That's not a bug, that's a feature!) Competent if not exciting food, worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood and need a quick sit-down bite to eat. This place scores a 3 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. I stop by Tommy's almost every morning for my breakfast ritual--a sausage patty and egg taco that never disappoints. The tacos are delicious, but what really keeps me coming back is the service. Most mornings I'm greeted at the drive-thru by Dani, and she always knows my name, greets me with a warm smile, and sends me off with kind words to start my day. It may only be a quick interaction, but her positivity and genuine kindness make a big difference. This was my first time to eat here. I have had the enchiladas (to go) once and they were very good. I ordered a potato& egg with cheese and a Carne Guisada taco. My potato egg with cheese was not hot or warm & the cheese was not melted (even just a bit), but it was good. I was not going to complain. My favorite is still at a hole in the wall. The Carnegie Ehde was slightly warmer and did have good flavor. They definitely gave me a lot of meat. It was good. read more

I have always liked Tommy's. The tortillas both corn and flour are the best. I normally wouldn't complain. But, today the hostess was awful. I asked if someone could clean the table I wanted to sit at. There were no dirty dishes but the table had crumbs and water. I guess from the drinks. She came back with a wet towel and only wiped half the table. I asked her if I could borrow the towel. She handed me to towel and I clean the table myself. I gave her the towel bag and thanked her. She gave me a dirty look. And didn't say anything to me and walked away. This is one of San Antonio's best restaurants in my opinion. There is no need for someone to be rude. This is a happy big red place. All I wanted was a clean table. read more

It's a hit and miss w Tommys. Some days it's great and other days it's questionable! Their food is prepared well and other times their rice is crunchy, not well cooked, bacon is dry and overcooked, brisket is mostly fat. I would like to see the cook eat that hard bacon. Chillaquillas are made correctly some occasions but some days hardly any sauce, chips soggy, not cheesy just a lot of dry eggs. And one last thing, check your receipt cuz they sometimes over charge customers. read more

Finally finally finally was able to try Tommy's. With all that I have heard over the years from people who have been to even workers there. "Best breakfast tacos". Whoa - that's a strong statement in San Antonio. "Hands down best Mexican breakfast". Whoa again. Calm down. Not possible with all the competition. This is a rare time when the hype did not disappoint the actual experience. They're tortillas are amazballs. Literally could eat those all day. Several tacos with Barbados AND something else. The food is hot and fresh, and the service is, or has been above average. There are a ton of Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, so it's tough in my books to give a 5 star unless there is something really special. So we heard a LOT of hype about this restaurant. My boyfriend and I finally decided to try it on a Sunday afternoon while we were in the area. I got the Deluxe Plate and my boyfriend got the Old San Antonio Special. We also got an order of chips and salsa (it's not complimentary... I know, right?) and two lemonades. First of all, the lemonade is the BEST I've ever had! They do not offer free refills but it was so good I wasn't mad for long. It tasted fresh and delightfully refreshing. The two plates we got were huge portions. Tons of food for its price. The food was super good as well. While we were impressed with the food and service, I had to take off a star. The chips & salsa was $3 but came with a TINY portion of salsa. The enchiladas were a bit dry for my taste but other than that, we thought the food was fantastic. So disappointed in Tommys today! We had been out of town for the last week and wanted San Antonio Mexican food. 1st we walk in and no one working front so we had to out our own name on list. The hot sauce tasted like tomatoes sauce. I used half the salt shaker. My husband ate the carne guisada plate. He said that was good but beans and rice awful. He was better off and cheaper if he just ordered to carne guisada tacos. Our lunch was not worth $40. 4th it was so hot in there . Last time that I was in San Antonio I tried to eat here and I missed them because of their hours of operation.....but this time we got here just on time! Excitedly we entered into the restaurant and sat down..took a look at the menu given to us by Abigail our Our Wonderful Server/Waitress..... And boy the food came out pretty fast and to our surprise very large portions for lunch plates....homemade everything on our plates and freshly made tortillas too...Oooooooh Yeah!! Mouthwatering Deliciousness and Authentic Mexican Cuisine from Mexican Coke (Alittle Sweeter) and some Big Red!! Great Yummilicious Foods with Super selections of Music playing in the background 80's and 90's vibes plus genuine customer service from Abigail coming back to check on us and refilling my Big Red and having some quality conversations too!
