I'll start with the good- the service was pretty good. Our server was a nice older lady and the food came out fast. The pancakes and eggs were fine. The corned beef hash came out of a can. We didn't get anything we'd describe as delicious. The place is in serious need of basic upkeep and cleaning- there were at least 2 flies big enough that I could see their faces, that kept visiting our table. Do not come to Tom's looking for fancy schmancy anything. Come to Toms for great coffee, down home service and killer breakfast food. This is a well seasoned environment that's been a Manassas staple for years. It's locally owned and the ladies that work there have been there for the long haul. Our first visit there, we were greeted with friendly service and chit chat and they now know us by name. The staff is a huge part of why we come back week after week. They have amazing pancakes and grits that could rival my grandmas! They have lunch items ... burgers and such, but I will be 100% honest - I have only ever had breakfast there. I went to this place once with two friends and swore I'd never go back. It took the waitress fifteen minutes to come by and get our drink orders and even though we all knew what we wanted, she refused to take our order until she had brought the drinks. When she did finally bring take our order, the cook came out and said "I'm not makin' a damn thing until I have a cigarette." The waitress seemed more interested in her conversation with the few regulars (the only other people in the place besides our table). When she did finally bring us our food, our drinks were all empty. We asked for refills and she said she'd be back in a second but only returned to drop off the check. When I asked about the refills, she told me they cost extra and she'd already totaled us up. We did nothing to these people. No special requests, we ordered from the menu; we weren't even nasty about the long wait for everything. I have waited tables in several restaurants and bars, but I have NEVER stiffed a waiter, waitress, or bartender no matter how bad the service was...except this time. As far as food goes - this has great diner food, especially for breakfast. Their prices are real good too. The bad part is the cleanliness of the interior and exterior. The outside of the place is horrible and run down, with potholes all over the "parking lot" (if you want to call it that), unkempt bushes and it's just a complete mess. My theory is that they want to keep up their appearance of a "hole in the wall" place! Haha. But the food is good, and we've had good service every time. We always go after the breakfast rush though. My fiance and I love a great breakfast. We're new to the area and googled "diners" for Manassas and came across this little hole in the wall. I do love little hole in the walls normally. Parking is very limited. We were the first ones in the restaurant and it was quiet (only 1 waitress and 1 cook was there and you could hear a pin drop). Waitress told us to sit anywhere. It's a very small place with a small town atmosphere. So far, I was okay. It is a bit on the ran down side. The bushes could use trimmed out front, the parking lot could use a repaving and the inside of the diner looked like it could use a new floor put down, but otherwise I wasn't complaining. Both my fiance and I ordered the 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and 2 pancakes special for $6.99. He got a hash brown on the side and I got a biscuit for 0.80 cents and a side of sausage gravy for $2.95. We each got a large glass of orange juice which was quite small and room temperature. I got a refill on the oj which is not free My fiance didn't finish his orange juice because the cup was not clean and had crusty on the inside and a floater. Our total bill was $28 and some odd cents. We did leave full and the food was overall pretty good. The sausage was made perfect, the bacon was not quite as crispy as I liked; my fiance thought the same of his hash browns. The eggs were okay. The pancakes were light and fluffy. With tip we spent over $30 for 2 breakfast's which I don't think was that much of a bargain; esp when you factor in the poor atmosphere. We likely won't go back. With a little work, this might be a nice diner, but I wasn't all that impressed. read more

Basic diner food. The place is a dump and I probably won't eat there again due to the cleaniness of the place...its a greasy spoon. Parking it tight. Everything you'd want from a diner... friendly, fast service, hot, made to order, stick to your ribs kind of food with a small price tag. Not sure how long this place has been open, but their website states 25+ years & the building shows it's age. Small parking lot, but it seems to accommodate the patrons each time I've visited. I've only ever stopped in for breakfast, though they do have lunch/dinner hours on Thursday & Friday. Tom's Diner is a classic. I can assure you that many a Manassas resident has eaten off a hangover. It's classic diner food done right. They serve breakfast whenever it's open. The biscuits and gravy are amazing, as are the burgers. Anything breakfast is good, but anything that sounds remotely healthy is so-so. I am pretty laid back, and I like laid back places. Tom's Diner fills the bill. It is a diner. Do not expect china plates and linen napkins-you will be disappointed. The food is good and made to order. My husband likes soft scrambled eggs. He was very happy that he was accommodated. I like eggs benedict, they a good job.. I gave this place a #5 because it touts itself as a diner and fits the bill. I have always gotten breakfast here (served all day) , but next time I am going to try lunch. I love the ambience of Tom's. The only waitress I have seen during 3 visits is funny and reminds me of Flo from "Mel's Diner". What a hoot! This is a great option if you prefer the locally-owned, you're gonna sit next to the bearded guy who plays Santa in the Manassas Parade kind of place! I'm not one to frequent breakfast spots that often, however Patty keeps us comin back for more with great service, witty banter and a great smile! I have lived in Manassas 10 years and been by this place hundreds of times. I decided to stop in on my way to breakfast at another Manassas landmark. This place appears to be patronized by regular locals. They say, don't judge a book by it's cover, and here you might be scared off by the outside appearance...run down. Well, the inside was just as bad, falling down around you. The only way to fix this place is to take it down completely and start over. I understand that Manassas would like to improve the appearance of entering town from the east, and this business is one of the reasons for that effort, along with the many used car establishments and other dated strip mall(s) and buildings housing retail stores. We sat near a window...the mini blinds hadn't been dusted in years. There were four or more flies trying to get out. Overhead glass light fixtures needed to be cleaned up too...try the diswasher (that's what we do). The food was better than average and a good value. Wife had belgian waffle which I sampled and it was excellent. She had a side of scrapple that she said was so-so (I don't do scrapple). I had the greek omelette which I have not seen on a menu anywhere and it was quite good, sauteed onions, olives and cooked tomatoes inside, feta cheese on top of a 3-egg omelette made it relatively "light." The side of home-fried potatoes was a bit spicy, but otherwise a good generous portion. At first I was inclined to go for the chipped beef on toast or biscuit, because I hadn't seen that on any menu either, so the waitress said I could get it as a side and put it on the biscuit and potatoes which I did. I am glad that I didn't order this as the main entree because it was pasty and didn't have substantial chipped beef...similar to the other reviewer that said his sausage gravey wasn't sausagy. The biscuit was cut in half and was toasted-grilled in butter as a final touch, which was nice. I would rate the food as a 4-star for overall taste and value, but the interior is unappetizing so it really makes this an overall 3-star experience. This is a basic diner and is not fancy, but is solid and good. The breakfasts are pretty good and the service is friendly. You will not find anything exciting here but you will get is a good meal for a good price. Don't let the "greasy spoon" ambiance fool you. Came here for breakfast over the weekend. Didn't encounter any of the problems listed in some of the other reviews. Our waitress was a friendly young lady. She had a pleasant demeanor... attentive without being overbearing. Our food was delicious. I ordered the veggie omelette, my fiancé the biscuits and gravy. My omelette tasted much better than the veggie omelette at IHOP or Bob Evans. Fresher ingredients. The building was a little rough looking, but it's a diner. I've been to this spot several times and each time I leave fully satisfied! I have only gotten breakfast, which is usually an omelet with sausage, bacon and cheese and hash browns, and sometimes even pancakes. Occasionally it can be a little busy but it's definitely worth the wait! The waitresses are friendly, the food is yummy and greasy just like it's supposed to be! I ordered the greek omelet (feta, tomatoes, onions, olives) with hash browns and an english muffin. My husband ordered two eggs sunny side up with hash browns, bacon, toast, and grits. So.. This establishment is one of the last remaining "greasy spoon" old style "throw back" diner's in the Manassas area.. It has a unique bare bones, no frills, quaint atmosphere but my opinion is that due to it's poor quality ( I believe they cook with tons of butter) and very run down structure that it's time is near the end. Ironically I like to frequent this establishment but my visits have become few and far apart... Due to the food quality.. I order eggs and they are always soaked with butter... I would suspect their large hot cooking service is manned by a low wage earner cook... They have a prime location but don't think they have made improvements in decades...
