This place is how you want your traditional and new age fusion to be. It is always packed here, which to me is a good sign. The miso soup is delicious, and the Blizzard roll is incredible with the little side portion of tuna tartare...brilliant. Average priced rolls (california, etc.) are just that...average rolls that you get at most decent sushi restaurants. The only real issue I can say that I have is with the nigiri sushi that I also ordered. Don't get me wrong, the hamachi was still good. However, I watched the person putting together my order, and the two pieces were premade in a plastic refrigerated container that he just pulled out and slapped on the plate. Even if I had not seen that, I would have still assumed it to be premade, since its appearance was obviously not freshly cut. Still tasty, but I have tasted better at other places when it is fresh cut to order. Overall, Tona is a great place. Always busy, always good. This is our absolute favorite restaurant on 25th street. Hands down. From the very first bite of their gyoza we knew this was a gem. Every single thing that we have gotten has been absolutely delicious. The fish collar, oyster, sushi, bento boxes, miso soup, udon noodles; everything is just so delicious. My absolutely favorite dish is the ribeye and rice tots. Seriously to die for! And the staff is always so friendly and attentive. We have honestly never had a bad experience there; and we have been there a lot! Plus, they are very kid friendly. We always bring our kids who are now 7 and 10. I cannot believe how delicious our meal was. Sushi in Ogden?? Crazy right.. Plus It was such an enjoyable evening! We went on a Friday night around 7pm, place was packed with people waiting. We almost left - I'm so glad we didn't... We waited about 10-15 minutes before being sat. They took us into a back area which turned out to be the BEST SPOT EVER. It was perfect for the date night my husband and I were there for. They had us remove our shoes and sit in a private little area. Then to top it off our server was incredibly kind and made the evening that much better with her recommendations! I loved it all. Good sushi, fresh seafood. I guess I was a little put off by how annoying the patrons were who were sitting around us. It seemed to be an acceptable environment to be obnoxious and ignorant to those around and the servers seemed to have no problem participating. The hard floors and walls definitely accentuated the noise, so if you are looking for a relaxing place to not have a headache after eating don't go to Tona. The other two sushi places we tried were also local and also received great reviews! Second of all saying you don't pack your rolls with rice and sauces to make them look huge? That's not at all what made your rolls so dissatisfying, hence in my original review the comment of of pee sized eel amount, every other sushi place I've EVER been too when you order a "dragon" "caterpillar" type roll each bite has a delicious large piece of eel on top that's packed with flavor and yours was lacking both. The blizzard roll had a ver small amount of spicy tuna and mostly just a mouth full of the crunchy coating. I think it's time for you to read through some of your reviews and see that some of your "friends" and "long time customers" are also having an issue with your portion sizes! I always ask people locally where to try to food as well and when asked for sushi I'm told constantly to try two other places and your name doesn't come with positive reviews, yet we gave it a try any way and we're sorrily disappointed! I don't know why this place has almost 5 stars because it's a joke! Maybe it's because people don't know any better? I don't know, but it is so overpriced for what you get! Like an infant could fit pieces of these rolls in its mouth! The blizzard roll we ordered was $15.50 and it had 6 pieces and each piece was literally at least HALF of the size of a normal sushi roll. The rolls were so incredibly bland too! Like thank god for soy sauce, we also ordered the hot lava roll and I wish I would've taken a picture but I kid you not there was like a pee sized amount of eel in each roll! This restaurant served us what is quite possibly the best meal I have enjoyed all year. Our table had several sushi rolls, the teriyaki ribeye, the bbq ribs, the braised Brussels sprouts, and the pork belly. Everything was cooked perfectly, brilliantly spiced, and presented beautifully. The environment was clean, and the service was impeccable. Fair warning, it was so good we tried to go back the next night but they were booked. Make a reservation and have a wonderful experience. I took my friend who visited me from Japan. We ordered nigiri and udon but both dishes were disappointing to us. Unfortunately this was another Japanese-like restaurant. I had sake and Maguro nigiri. It was as small as other Utah Japanese restaurants like Takashi. I don't know why they make the nigiri so small. Such a small sushi does not exist anywhere in Japan. Saba was over cured, dry and tasteless. Udon was such a disappointment. Soup was not tasty, noodle was over cooked, and it was just lukewarm. Udon has to be hot! That is a least thing that you can do to respect Udon. I feel so sorry to my friend because they wasted money. They definitely need to study, learn and hope they will start serving real/authentic Japanese food. read more
