We lived in Japan for 3 years, and since moving back to Utah we have yet to find a place that comes close to the delicious food we found in Japan; that was until we finally found this gem. It was amazing. People rave about Tona Sushi- and it's okay- but it cannot hold a candle to this place. It's very small, quaint and you have to be patient as the staff is limited. But it's worth the wait. The flavors of their Udon, their Miso brought me back to Okinawa. Their rainbow and caterpillar rolls were the best I've had in Ogden or in Utah. Everyone needs to know! This is the best Japanese curry I've ever had! The curry is everything you want in COMFORT FOOD and much more! So the Mrs. and I went here for a date night. We wanted asian, and this Japanese joint looked as if it fit the bill. The building itself is small, but when we stepped out of the car the aroma hit our noses and we knew we'd made a good choice. When I say small, I mean there's four tables and a sushi bar, so if you're bringing a group make reservations. We got the gyoza and chef's choice sashimi as an appetizer. For dinner, I got the beef dinner, and my wife got the udon. The gyoza was so tasty we could have eaten just a bunch of that and been happy. Then the sashimi got there. You know how really good fish tastes like the ocean? Yeah. Tuna and salmon and other good stuff. The dinners were massive. We could have split the wife's dinner and had left-overs. I've been wanting to try this place out for awhile. I'm so glad we finally came today! The 5 star rating here is definitely deserved. So, luckily I read the reviews before coming and knew what we had to do. We were greeted by the owner and told which number table to seat ourselves at. Then, you pull out the menu and an order form/pencil from the side of the table and mark what you want. You then turn your form in to the cooks. I believe it's the cute couple who cook that own this place. I am a huge fan of Japanese culture and so I'm always trying out different recipes & watching Japanese tv shows. Their food always looks delicious. This place reminded me a lot of the show "Midnight Diner" - very cozy & intimate. It's a self serve establishment - the only difference is they serve you your food. There is also an area with an ice machine and water (hot or cold) and a small fridge of sodas that you help yourself to - along with napkins & items (just let the cashier/cook know what sodas you'll be having & they'll add it to your tab) When our food came out, it smelled & tasted delicious. My sister enjoyed her chicken katsu curry and I enjoyed my lunch katsu special. Best Ramen in Utah so far for me, the place is very authentic, and the service is a little different being that's it's just a small mom and pop place, when we go there we clear our own table when we're done, so if you want a place that waits on you hand and foot , you won't like it. But if your there for awesome authentic Japanese cuisine, go and get it. They are only open on curtain days and hours so call and make a reservation. You won't be disappointed if you like sushi and ramen , and the gyoza is top notch as well. Haven't had anything here that wasn't good. The place is small but clean and very authentic. I honestly do not trust any other Japanese Gourmet Chef in Utah other than Chef Roy and ofcourse his wife. This local restaurant is ran by two people. I have advanced metastatic breast cancer, and so I have to watch what I eat . Ofcourse the only person I trust with making sushi or any meal for that matter is Chef Roy. I fear the day that they ever retire. I hope I die before they do because this place is my home away from home. The culinary works of art that come from this very tiny business, are blessed. I strongly believe that their food is blessed. I think that they have survived this pandemic because they cook with integrity and humility. I only trust this Chef to make my sushi, because he is a subject matter expert on of his craft and perhaps. I visited here was a great way to cap a long day of studying. From the small garden out front to the cozy bar seats inside, the place felt inviting and was a great detour for a night out. As a solo first timer on a not-too-busy night, it was easy to find a seat at the bar and to figure out the order forms found on the table. There are also food order forms at the register for takeout. I ordered the agedashi tofu (fried tofu in broth) appetizer and tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), which came with sides. The agedashi was excellent, from the silky-smooth tofu to the crispy exterior to the savory dashi broth that it soaked up. The tonkatsu was tasty, especially with the tangy dipping sauce and the fluffy rice. I'm glad to have found a restaurant that I will definitely return to! read more

Gosh, what a cute charming little family restaurant! I can tell it's popular because we arrived in the parking lot 10 minutes before dinner opening and there were already two other cars waiting for the restaurant to open. The place filled up in under 15 minutes. Not a lot of tables so I imagine it's hard to get a seat right away most nights unless you're here by 5:30pm. Ok, let's get to the point! The reason I came here is because my favorite Japanese meal, the buckwheat soba! I had it on a trip to japan and I believe no where else in Utah serve soba this way. You have to dip the noodles in a cup of sauce that is a perfect blend of sweet and savory. For me the noodles were a bit too hard but the sauce and the tempura shrimp were delicious! I was satisfied and actually, so full because the portion was huge! They also serve sushi, ramen (only for lunch), udon, and street snacks like croquettes. I went here because my favorite ramen shop in Clearfield was closed (Jin's), even though I live much further south. I read some of the reviews and decided to give it a try. It was a very good decision that I definitely don't regret. In terms of a truly Japanese Experience this is the closest you're going to get locally. From the seating, to the ordering, service, the presentation, and payment - this has a very real Japanese restaurant feel, though there are some Americanized aspects about it, naturally. I ordered gyoza, the tempura udon for my daughter, the niko udon for my son, and the Katsu chicken for myself, with some mochi for dessert. I was not disappointed. Gyoza: tasty, and the sauce very refreshing. My kids scarfed 'em down. Tempura udon: my daughter ate mostly the noodles on this one, but did eat at least half of the tempura shrimp that comes with it. I tried it, cause that's what I do, and it was a perfect Japanese experience. Very flavorful broth and perfect noodles with light and crispy tempura. It was delightful. Great portion size (though a bit big for my kiddos to eat in one sitting). Niku udon: basically the same thing as above, but beef based. Also, very delightful. My son ate half his bowl and took the rest home, which he ate for breakfast. This came with a potato croquette as a side which I LOVED. Tempura Chicken: basically, fried chicken cutlet. If you've read my post about Jin's, you'll know that my favorite Japanese dish is Katsu Donburi. While they are different dishes, it was only natural for me to pick this. I am familiar with it as well. It was fantastic! Perfectly cooked tempura chicken with a perfectly cooked side of rice. Other sides included: salad with dressing, miso soup, curry sauce, and a potato croquette. So filling! And very satisfying. Mochi: it is mochi. You can't go wrong. It had a beautiful presentation and was a perfect size for after a meal. My kids ate them up. We tried the strawberry and cookies and cream. Service: very like a traditional Japanese restaurant. You walk in, they have seating open that you pick or they direct you to a seat. We sat at the counter top (my favorite!). You fill out a card to order, turn it in at the counter (if you're at a table - same counter), and they put it in line. Ramen was delivered in a bowl with the sides on a plate. Mine was delivered on a tray with all the sides (see pictures). This made me very nostalgic. There's also a tray rack off to the side where you put your tray when you're done (they will take it, usually. If you're at the counter you can set it up on the rail). Atmosphere: this place is small, like in Japan. You can see into the kitchen as they cook. It definitely won't fit a large group. It's very warm, in terms of friendliness and proximity, but I LOVE that. It was quiet, but bustling. Had pleasant music, and it was quite fun to watch the cooks in their art, especially on sushi. All in all, I will be coming back to try the sushi, and apparently the ramen Saturday's they do. Maybe they will have kitsune udon (here's me hoping!). I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. read more

Ramen is best eaten on a chilly day on a counter in a small, cozy establishment. Hamamaru fits this description perfectly. Ordering is simple. Take an order sheet, circle the items you want, and hand it to one of the ladies. Remember: Ramen is only served Saturdays til 2pm (or until they run out.) The tonkotsu ramen is a must-try. It's simply love at first sight. That charming bowl slides in front of you and you just have to sit back and admire it for a few moments. The broth is the star of the show. It is just creamy enough and coats the chewy noodles in just the right way. Make sure to order extra charshu pork because it is exquisite. The regular portion is satisfying but just order the large. Trust me! And pair it with the matcha iced tea. Thank me later! I will now become a regular. So see you guys on Saturday. read more

This place was interesting to say the least. So it's kind of like a self-serve? When we arrived the lady told us to take a seat and we waited for someone to take our order. We then figured out that you take your own order and bring it up to the front. There are paper menus that you write down what you want and we had to get up and get a pencil to fill it out. I wish the lady at the front would have told us this and there would have been a lot less confusion. There are signs to explain this but I still would have liked a little introduction about it. You pour your own water, you get your own utensils, and at the end you put away your own trays. The Gyoza dumplings were pretty good but the other food that I got was not so great. From the food to the ambiance to the chefs - this is quite authentic. Lunch special is the best bang for your buck. $10 for meat of your choice, rice, salad, miso soup, fried potato, fried dumpling. It's good to know this restaurant is run by Japanese. We came here because of the ramen noodles, however, when we arrived, they did not have ramen on their menu. I was a bit disappointed. My wife did not waste time and went crazy ordering a bunch of dishes and sushi with only 3 of us dining but could be for a party of 7. The udon and soba noodles soups were delicious along with their perfect tasty cooked broth. The Katsu chicken curry rice was ok. The sauce was a bit bland and it was missing strong curry taste to it. The sushi we ordered was good except for the nigiri tuna which tasted fishy. All and all, I would definitely come back again and try out the other items. Note that this is a small place so be sure to call in first before you head out to the restaurant. It only seats four tables of four and three at the bar. read more

The generosity of the portions and their arrangement was pleasing, and well thought-out. We ordered sushi, soba noodles, salmon, and yakiniku dinners. They were all delicious. Typically we find the tastes here in Utah to be Americanized - either too thick or too thin, but at Hanamaru, it was like we were back in Japan at a family-favorite restaurant. Chef Yamamoto has the authenticity dialed-in, and the service was prompt and friendly. This place was amazing. We had a variety of items, including tempura, sushi, tonkatsu, udon soup, and a few other things. All of it was delicious - it reminded me of the home cooked meals I had as a kid living in Japan. When I initially looked at the photos of the interior online, it was a bit underwhelming. But, the atmosphere is cozy and practical. The focus is obviously on the food. Be prepared to wait, since the restaurant seats a max of 22 people and there are plenty of people that seem to know about this place (it's worth the wait). A few things to be aware of: 1) There doesn't appear to be a waiting list - just hang out at the door with the crowd and they'll seat you in the order you came in. 2) You clean up your own table and put the dishes on a rack against the wall when you're done. 3) You fill out your own order slip, one per table, and take it up front to the cashier when you're ready. This is one of my favorite places that I've been to in the last several years and I can't wait to go back. read more

We completely enjoyed our dinner. We loved the Tonkatsu. It was moist and beyond tender. Incredible! Calamari was perfect, but the tempura with curry sauce was the show stopper! This is a great little place (emphasis on little). Seating Max is 22 so get there early. The fried calamari was excellent (large strips, not small circles). Had a playboy roll and the tuna was very fresh. We also had the potato crocket which is basically a thick hashbrown with sauce, but way better. I would order two!! This is one of my favorite ramen around the area. My fiance' introduced me to this place. I feel like this is one of the few places in Utah where you can get authentic ramen. The resto is kind of a self-serve as it is run by a couple. Their food is really good. My favorite is their spicy miso ramen. This is our go-to place when we're craving for ramen. Hanamaru has good food and is one of the better Japanese restaurants in the Weber/Davis county area. It is located in a little side street, and the place is decently sized for the location. Still have not found a great sushi place, but Hanamaru is good with the other items. The food is overall good, I enjoy eating the tempura appetizer here, and my wife really likes the Udon. The atmosphere is very pleasant and food comes fairly quickly, sushi usually takes longer than the other dishes. For most of the dishes and food four stars, and the sushi is about 3.5 stars with the nigiri sushi at three stars. Overall a four star place for good food and service. I would recommend going and eating at Hanamaru for the Udon and tempura. Wish they had more selection of fish with the sushi. read more

This is probably the best Japanese food we've found in Utah (and we've lived in Japan for several years).It is run by a Japanese family and it's not a large restaurant which is probably why they have good quality control. Prices are reasonable. We went around 6pm on A Friday evening and they only had counter seats left but we enjoyed watching the cooks. The food was fresh and well prepared.
