Lalyn is a new restaurant from the team behind Malii Gramercy and When in Bangkok, two of my top favorite thai restaurants in NYC. They had me going in with sky high expectations and they really delivered. Our server Blue was the sweetest and even gave us NYC and Bangkok illustrated postcards as souvenirs. It's near Penn Station with a more upscale vibe. I'm already eyeing their 2-course lunch special ($19-$27) and HH deals with drinks starting at $7 since it's so close to my office. ＊Basil Steak Fried Rice $45*** Seriously the best thai steak fried rice I've had. The wagyu was perfectly medium rare and juicy. I'm a fan of anything basil and I loved how fragrant it was with the garlic fried rice. ＊Roast Duck Pineapple Curry $34** The curry is very spicy and the spice level is not adjustable. The sweetness from the pineapple and grapes helped ease the heat, and the curry was so creamy and satisfying when paired with rice. ＊Lalyn Pad Thai $30 The presentation was gorgeous with the lacy egg netting but it looked better than it tasted. Everything from the service to food was beyond 5 stars and truly incredible. The presentation and flavors of every dish were unbelievable. Jakk was our server and he was absolutely amazing. I ordered the jun tra cocktail that was very tasty. For our starters, we shared the blossom sago bites, crab croquettes, and the tom kha soup. All a must order. For my entree, I had the lamb shank massaman, the meat was very delicious and tender. My friends both ordered the roasted duck pineapple curry and enjoyed it. We celebrated my dear friend's birthday at Lalyn a few days ago -- and it was one of those rare occasions where everything was absolutely perfect. The reception was warm and welcoming; they seated us once the full party arrived. I'd recommend making a reservation in advance. Before the food -- our waiter Jakk deserves a special mention. Having waited tables and bartended myself, I have high standards, and Jakk exceeded them all. Patient, attentive, funny, and charming, he made us feel genuinely welcomed while delivering on every request. 10 stars to Jakk alone! He started us off with a lovely tea, then we moved into cocktails: the Duang Duen (sweet foam and toasted almonds beautifully balanced the bourbon and dark rum), Jun Tra, and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. For appetizers we shared crab croquettes, blossom sago bites, and tom kha soup -- all three were excellent. The sago bites had an amazing peanut filling and a stunning lavender color, and the tom kha soup was absolutely incredible. For mains, we went with the lamb shank massaman and the roasted duck pineapple curry. The lamb fell right off the bone; the duck was a perfect medium-rare with a delicious curry. The crab croquettes were an immediate hit, as were the blossom sago bites - a beautifully artistic riff on the street food classic of sweet-savory sago dumplings with seasoned peanut filling. The Rawang curry delivered superb flavor, though the beef could stand to be more tender. Presentation throughout is exquisite, and the food is true to tradition but contemporary and elevated. And finally!!! A restaurant where I don't have to complain about impossibly dim lighting, thanks to the thoughtfully placed spotlights that illuminate your menu & dishes on the table without killing the ambiance. Solid 4 stars with some dishes elevating it to 4.5. We go to Malii fairly regularly so we wanted to try the newest restaurant from Olie Sangpetpairot. The ambiance here is incredible, high ceilings, full bar, nicely decorated with lighting that isn't too bright or too dim. Perfect for a nice dinner out whether it be a date or professional dinner. My only one minor complaint is the wooden chairs weren't very comfortable. The service was great, attentive without being overbearing and the food came out relatively quickly which we appreciated as we were starving. For a group of 4 for dinner, we ordered 3 appetizers and 5 entrees. If you are not big eaters, I would say you could get away with only 4 entrees. We started with the chicken satay (2 in one order), crab croquettes (3 per order) and chive cakes (5 per order). I love chive cakes and these did not disappoint, exactly what I wanted/expected. The crab croquettes were crispy and not oily, very tasty when dipped in the sauce they were served with. However, I felt the addition of shrimp in the filling gave it a chewy texture I did not enjoy. I think this dish would be excellent if it was just crab. Lastly, the chicken satay was phenomenal. I love that they serve it in a taco, great innovation on a traditional dish. Honestly, it might be one of the best non-traditional tacos I have had in NYC. For entrees we tried the khao soi, lalyn pad thai, duck pineapple curry, grilled bronzino and fish curry gratin. Good portions for each and they did not skimp on the duck. The khao soi was served with duck which was a nice twist on the dish. I thought it was solid (8/10), though I enjoy the khao soi from Malii more. The lalyn pad thai was tasty (pad thai served in an egg net) and what you want/expect when you order pad thai. The duck pineapple curry was tasty, though I wanted more vegetables/fruit in it to bulk up the dish. It came with a few tomatoes and two slices of fresh pineapple, but it was a generous portion of duck. It was fairly spicy (medium spicy) so be warned if you are sensitive to spice. We liked it though and thought the spice level was appropriate, it complimented the dish without overpowering it. The grilled branzino was the best entree, cooked perfectly and everything on the dish went well together, creating great flavor and texture combinations. The only entree we did not like was the fish curry gratin. It was chopped up pieces of cod, packed together into a banana leaf. It was almost like a fish meatloaf and only tasted of cod so not our favorite. For dessert we tried the purple yam. It was tasty, albeit a bit sweet for me (but I am not a dessert person). I wanted more ube flavor, but everyone enjoyed it. Overall, the prices are fair for the quality and quantity of food. The only real downside to this place is it's proximity to Penn Station, but that can be a plus for people commuting into and out of the city. Definitely worth checking out and be sure to order the chicken satay and grilled bronzino. read more

The croquettes had huge chunks of crab and shrimp. I loved the lamb massaman. The pad Thai was so well seasoned and served in an omelette just like in Bangkok. read more
