Pork loin Tonkatsu
Wesley T.

I heard about this place opening from instagram and decided to go try it out! It's located inside Mitsuwa Marketplace, where parking can be extremely packed during the weekends. The food is served food court style where you order up front, and bring the food to an open table. The wait wasn't too bad for a Wednesday lunch, and you can browse the bookstore next door to pass the time. I got the cheapest option, which was the porkloin tonkatsu. It came with a nice chunk of katsu, miso soup, rice, and salad. Be sure to add some dressing to your salad at the counter! The meal was delicious and it tastes really similar to the tonkatsu I had in Japan. The katsu was very crispy, and paired nicely with the sauce they provided. The rice was cooked perfectly as well and the miso soup was yummy. I enjoyed my meal, and for a bit, I felt like I was back in Japan! The only downside was that the meal costed around $20, which is quite pricy for me. This is a great new addition to Mitsuwa's food count, and I will come back to eat there again!

Chicken Katsu Plate

A great little place inside the Matsuwa Food Court. Simple place where you order at the counter and they call your number when the food is ready. The chicken katsu was very tender and flavorful. The katsu wasn't too oily. There was a nice cabbage salad that you can put dressing on yourself that is at the counter. The pork tenderloin was super tender. Probably one of the best ones I've had. Better than many full service places. Because it's a simple place the price was a bit less than full service places. We'll definitely be back!

Used to be the mochi donut spot (multiple locations seem to be closing in the Bay Area). Unfortunately based on my visit, the food is overpriced. The tonkatsu sandwich was $9.80 as of April 26. I wasn't impressed with the portion or the taste. The food was made to order. To be fair, food is expensive everywhere now, but IMO there are better options in the same food court/ strip mall.

This is a shop in the plaza with Mitsuwa…read more There's a huge variety of hot (don, okonomomiyaki, etc.) and cold items (chirashi, sushi bowls, sashimi, etc.), as will as rice balls to choose from. The items are all decently priced, fresh, and decent quality. There is no seating - it is purely a takeout spot. The people working there are super polite.

Repeated Fugetsu customer here! This is the perfect grab-and-go spot for your Japanese cravings…read more I have been to Fugetsu at least 8 times at this point and will definitely come here again. This spot is located in Strawberry Park in Saratoga and is right next to Clover Bakery. While Clover Bakery tends to have longer lines, I personally have never run into a scenario where Fugetsu is packed. There is no seating, by the way, and parking can get a little hectic because of the nature of this plaza. I will say that over the years, Fugetsu has really stocked up on its selection and range of food. When you first enter, they have their stock of okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and generous bentos. As you turn the corner, they have sashimi, onigiri, dons, and more. Sometimes I get decision paralysis, but in a good way. I want to note that while I have never been disappointed by the food I get here, there isn't anything that has blown me away either. That being said, whenever I am having a picnic, this is the first spot I think of when I want to stock up for my friends and me. What is cool about this place, too, is that half of the store is dedicated to food, while the second half has merch, trinkets, and dinnerware. They carry Sonny Angels, Smiskis, loads of Miffy items, some Sanrio, and if you're a Sylvanian Families collector like me, you'll really enjoy it here. That said, they do upcharge quite a bit on some items. For example, a Sonny Angel at Mitsuwa (in the same plaza) can be around $16 (which is still expensive), while here it's closer to $21.

There are many tables and 10 or so seats at the sushi bar. Upon sitting, we had our drink orders taken immediately. There are daily specials posted on the board, one paper menu for nigiri, rolls, and hand rolls as well as a regular appetizer and entree menu. I ordered the sushi special which was an assortment of nigiri with a fatty tuna roll. Every slice of fish was fresh, buttery, and had the perfect amount of rice. The bluefin tuna nigiri melted in my mouth I wish I ordered more. A standout for us was the Toni special roll which has your choice of fish inside with seared salmon and scallop on the outside. Needless to say, the service, the speed at which the food was served, and the quality of fish were fantastic. Easily one of the best quality sushi spots close to me.

Needed to update my review…read more When this location first opened it wasn't very good and the food quality was not consistent. Im happy to say that my overall experiences have improved a lot!! I usually visit ar least once a month and only order the ajitama tsukemen. The broth flavor has been pretty consistent though sometimes the broth thickness is a bit variable. The noodles are very solid and this is one of the only places where I enjoy the noodles. When I went for lunch today I discovered that they have a lunch special on Mondays and Tuesdays to add a rice bowl. Monday is spicy tuna and Tuesday is chashu. The chashu is soft and very tasty. They also added some shichimi for a slight spicy kick. I will eat here until I die.

Food: 10/10 I was hesitant to try dipping ramen because my prior experience of trying it, the noodles were to heavy and I got tired of dipping. But the noodles here were chewy, bouncy, and not too heavy that I dipped all my noodles in the broth. The food tasted fresh and the chasu was soft. My husband got the chasu tsukemen and I got the tsukemen. I prefer to have the sliced tsukemen instead of the chopped chasu because some pieces were small. It was interesting that the tsukemen came with a lime wedge too. I got the chili spice on the side so I could add as much as I wanted. Ambiance: 10/10 We sat at the bar and felt like we were in Japan! It was a nice and cozy restaurant. Parking can be busy in the parking lot but not as busy as in front of Mitsuwa parking lot. I liked that there were instructions on how to eat the noodles too. Service: 10/10 Workers were very attentive. You get a water pitcher and cups too.

We also ordered menchi katsu a la carte (side) which came with two pieces. All of the curry came with rice or cabbage and you can choose the spice level (1-3). Level 1 is a mild with a kick. Pickled radish is additional dollar, kinda wish the meal came with it. Honestly would recommend just getting the choice of protein with the curry because it's a couple dollars more than getting a la carte... Curry was very good! Nice flavors and the rice helped enhance it. I liked the menchi katsu the most. It is basically a deep fried beef hamburger with crumb coating, flavors were really good and was juicy; came with 2 pieces for a la carte. Can't go wrong with chicken or tonkatsu too. The chicken karaage came with a mayo sauce on the side! I liked it, but I think this would be better on its own. Overall would come back and try other options.

We're glad we picked here to show them what the Bay Area can do in terms of more authentic Japanese food. The decor is traditional and not fancy, but comfortable and clean. The shishito peppers were really tasty, not too hot, pleasantly hot. Edamame was typical, nothing really special, but it's a bit difficult to really elevate edamame. The braised pork was good and the lean parts were easy to selectively eat. Nothing here is aggressively seasoned, but also not at all bland, so it's a good balance of flavorful but not overbearing. The grilled chicken wings were okay, but nothing outstanding or memorable - but simple and fine. Our "main" dishes, the deluxe meshi, nike tofu, and okonomiyaki were all great! Really enjoyed all of them and they were again flavorful, authentic tasting, and generous portions to share. Wish this were a little closer to where we live, but we enjoy coming here whenever we do and I recommend this for trying more traditional dishes when you want something different than simple teriyaki and sushi rolls.

I liked their traditional izakaya decor inside. They also had a tatami seating area towards the back. We decided to go family style so that we could try more items on their menu. We ordered the Niku Trio Set, which included braised pork, grilled chicken wings, niku tofu, edamame, and shishito. The food came out really quickly. Other than the edamame, which was very bland, everything was very flavorful. The pork was very soft, and the sliced thin beef paired really well with the tofu in the niku tofu. Both dishes came piping hot, and were very comforting, like home-cooked food. The shishito peppers came with a lot of bonito flakes; they're charred very well and not spicy at all. Wings well nicely grilled, too. The seafood okonomiyaki was not bad. It's a bit softer than I expected, but had quite a lot of seafood. The large Deluxe Meshi was pretty big. It came in a hot stone pot with a generous amount of salmon, eel, flying fish roe and a poached egg. I loved how crispy the rice around the pot was. No wonder it's their most popular dish. If you like authentic Japanese food, I would highly recommend this place.
