But the ratio of veggies to noodles was on point - generous portion too for the price we paid. I've probably walked or driven by this place a million times and never thought to go until a coworker invited me for lunch. Here are my takeaways: - My food, General TSO's chicken (yes, I am basic), was very good. However, it took a while for the food to come out. I believe our food was probably sitting because neither of our meals were hot. I don't need my food piping hot, but it could have been warmer. - The plates did not appear to be very clean, so definitely inspect them. I'm not one to complain (especially at restaurants), but I noticed a substance on my plate, and switched it out for another, which also had something on it. Forks were a little suspect, too. - The portion size is pretty good. I ended up needing a to-go box. Excellent food and probably the most historic Chinese restaurant in Washington DC. The real draw of this place is the ambience and the interior. It's a historic building in a historic location, and from what I understand it is the oldest Chinese restaurant in the small Chinatown that Washington DC actually has. The customer service was very friendly and the food was excellent. It's a little bit pricey but definitely worth a visit. It is not actually a Mongolian restaurant, although there are a couple of Authentic Mongolian dishes on the menu. The interior and ambience inside is stunning and brings you back to the past. The food was good. The portions were great. However the service and the atmosphere were not . The time we saw said they closed at 11:00. They didn't inform us their closing time either, especially with the time we arrived. We were watched the entire time and rushed to pay our bill. We asked for Togo boxes and our waiter told us to pay first and then we can get them. As good as the food was I wouldn't recommend dinning in. I came here for dinner with friends during Otakon 2022. The restaurant is located half a block away from the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro station (the exit with the archway over the street) and is located on the second floor when you enter the building. The decor is pretty out dated but it's nice for a sit down restaurant. The staff was so nice and very attentive. We never needed to ask for anything because they were on top of it. I got the crab wontons as an appetizer and the General Tso's shrimp which comes with broccoli and a side of white rice (Just a heads up that their General Tso's items are spicy! I love spicy food so it was fine for me but if you are sensitive to spice or don't like spicy food then that would be something to consider before ordering this). Everything came out piping hot and fresh and tasted amazing. The prices here are very reasonable for what you order and you get good sized portions (I had half leftover which I had as a snack the next day)! This is my favorite Chinese food restaurant in DC and I will definitely be back! read more

Don't do it!!! So, we were excited about going to Chinatown and we discovered this restaurant. I should have known when I had to walk up those steep steps, not to mention the place did not appear to be really clean. We placed our orders, 5 of us to be exact. My husband said, that waiter snatched the menu out of my hands...When our food was delivered, the waiter was calling out our entrées. We couldn't understand him so, he said loudly and angrily; Duck spelled D-U-C-K!!! Then, he flung the plate on the table as if he were dealing cards. Everyone looked at him, and the manager actually ran over to assist us. We explained to the manager what took place even though he had witnessed it himself.We agreed to pay for our drinks and explained that the waiter had blatantly disrespected us. Therefore, we did not want the food. The manager was very graceful, but never again will I ever step foot in that place. Don't do it!!! Tony Cheng's used to be one of my favorite restaurants in DC. It seems to have really gone downhill. The place feels kind of sad and dumpy inside. The Mongolian barbecue was locked up tight with padlocks on the door. We went upstairs to the Chinese restaurant instead. I ordered the Vegetarian chow fun noodles and my wife had the fried tofu. We also ordered some vegetarian eggrolls, which were OK. The hot mustard sauce will fry your brain! Anyway, my entree can be summed up in 3 words: bland, bland, BLAND! I ate a little bit of it and then took the rest home. Why would I take it home if it tasted so bland? Because I was actually able to recook it and add some flavor. I threw in sesame oil, hot sesame oil, hot Chinese chilis, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, tricolor sesame seeds, togarashi, salt and pepper, onion powder, Chinese black vinegar, garlic powder, and fried it all in Chinese stirfry oil. But it was sad to me that the food didn't taste good in the restaurant where I ordered it. I really hope Tony Cheng's comes back to making good food. BTW with 2 entrees, 1 appetizer and a beer for me, our total was $69! That's in part due to DC's mandatory 20% service charge aka forced tip. Classic socialist DC style, SMH. read more

This was an utter disappointment. I remember the Tony Cheng's from years ago when it was a vibrant institution. Met up with girlfriends for a Thursday night dinner to be met with broken sidewalk outside and a busted open pipe sticking up allowing fruit flies to flutter all around the entrance. Stepping inside, the place smells damp and wet. The first-floor dining room where the Mongolian BBQ used to be and what we came for is shuttered, dark, pad locked closed. I have a sensitive nose, but the smell of old, damp, and possibly unclean is unmistakable. Upstairs is a dining room with old cloth chairs with the nostalgic TC carved in each dirty chair. The food was less than average. Let's just say that corner Chinese carryout would have been more flavorful. We ate a couple of forks full and left the rest. "No, please no doggy bag." The photos online are of the Tony Cheng's of yesteryear. I don't think I will go there again, nor recommend to anyone else anytime soon. read more

Hey folks - this place is open again. I'm not sure what kind of renovation they did since the grill looks as old and dirty as ever and none of the decor actually changed. I also noticed the furniture and silverware was the same as ones I remember from early days when I dined here 20 years ago. But who gives a shit, because the food here is still pretty solid. This is really one of the few "authentic" Mongolian BBQ joints that actually feels and tastes like what you would find in Asia (which is kind of silly if you think about it - since there's actually nothing Mongolian about Mongolian BBQ - it was invented by the Taiwanese decades ago and modeled after the Japanese teppanyaki model - but I digress). Anyway - I like how you can pretty much gorge yourself with tons of meat, veggies and other crap that will literally make you crap in your pants hours later because of all the sheer tonnage in your stomach. But it's oh so worth it. The flavors of the meat when coupled with the sauces they use for cooking (that you can technically choose - but usually the cooks pick it for you - all the while asking if you like garlic and hot sauce ... the answer to both of those is YES!) is just oh so tasty. As for people saying you can't pick your sauces - you can choose what you want - just ask the cooks to do it for you. But one mistake people often make is they go apeshit on the sauces and overkill it - that's why it's better to rely on the chefs to pick for you, since they often craft a concoction that is more balanced and less salty. In addition to the meat and veggie options they also give you pickled cabbage, peanuts, rice and chinese biscuits (shao bing) as well. Personally I think the latter tastes quite good and is the normal starch compliment for Mongolian BBQ in similar restaurants in Asia. But they are rather generous with the rice here too. The service here is decent and overall this is a great place for folks looking to grab a nice meal with friends, family and kids too. It's also a decent place to visit before a Wizards or Caps game given the proximity to the arena. Yes this place is old school to a crazy degree, but I'm glad it's still here. It's hard to find a decent Mongolian BBQ place around town (even in NYC as well). read more

I really enjoyed my visit to this restaurant as I found the food here to be quite authentic and full of flavor! My favorite dish was the calamari and scallops as I found the dish to have the perfect amount of spice and the calamari were much larger than the ones you typically receive! The beef dish we ordered was rather mediocre but the vegetable platters we ordered were fantastic. I really liked the food here but I am giving four stars as the restaurant looks rather old and a little run down. The chairs look dirty, and the restaurant is in dire need of an upgrade or at the least an extensive cleaning. The food is fantastic and with some upgrades to the decor I think this would be a fantastic place to visit! read more

This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend. It was a great disappointment! My first clue should have been when their web site stated their time of opening as 11:00 am. Upon.arrival there is a note on the door stating opening is 12 noon. Next our waiter Steven was rushing us to place our orders.......repeatedly coming to our table. Thirdly, AT THE END of our meal we are told that their WiFi did not work.....so they could not accept credit cards! This forced my guests to pay for their meals....I felt embarrassed that I could not pay for my guests like I had plan to. What would have happened if no one had cash at our table? I feel this was deceptive and poor customer service! Will never eat here again!! To readers on Yelp. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more
