I had such a disappointing experience. I grew up with Lena's and thought they had the best subs anywhere. I haven't had one for years. My favorite was the ham and cheese which I got today. I eagerly opened it and bit into it, but the bread was a bit hard and not the same as it used to be. The sub really had little flavor. There was shredded lettuce on it, which I don't recall being used years ago and there wasn't enough oil on it so it was kind of dry and tasteless. The woman who made it was very nice and she asked what I wanted on it and I said everything. Including hots? Yes! But there were no hots on it. Jeez. I know things change, but this really couldn't compare at all to the delicious subs they used to make. Maybe they aren't able to get the same bread anymore? read more

I have only had two things, Steak Bomb Sub, Mushroom Salami Pizza, both good, sub excellent. I get my sub with no peppers because they use fresh green pepper they throw in at some point raw, and they're not cooked enough for me. I like the peppers soft and sautéed beforehand. The steak itself is the tastiest you'll get and cut nice, not all bits like some places do. But the rolls are what make, I'm sure, all of their subs, but especially the steak and cheese so special. It's a soft French subroll, itself delicious with a perfect pillowy texture inside. Women who run the place are the granddaughters of the man who started Tony Lena's over 60 years ago, so they take a lot of pride and put a lot of love into their food. Tiny little shop. Walked in. Was greeted immediately and asked what I wanted. I changed my order 2 times in 3.2 seconds and apologized. Informed the two ladies working I was a Gemini. They got it! lLOL! Had a quick discussion about their family members who are Gemini's! Super friendly and great staff. Ordered the Italian sub. Was so distracted by how amazing the sub looked forgot to order a drink. They do something I've never seen before but makes so much sense. They put bottom layer of cold cuts. Then lettuce tomato and fixings on next. Then layer of cold cuts and cheese on top of fixings. GENIUS! Keeps everything in place when eating sub! Sub was delicious. The bread? Beyond reproach! You really can't go wrong with anything on their menu, but what sets Tony Lena's apart from every other sub shop is their bread: their sub rolls are the softest, freshest, and most delicious you'll ever come across. Love Tony Lena's!! Recently my new favorite sub shop in swampscott. In my opinion they have the best Italian sub around this area. The workers are also so great. I do have one complaint though, not even a complaint but I'm just confused about their mozzarella sticks! instead of a regular mozzarella stick they are fried in a very very thick batter... kind of weird, not my cup of tea. Just enjoyed our first take-out pizza from Tony Lena's and boy, did we enjoy it! We went for the "pan crust" option, which cost an additional $2.50, but was well worth it. The crust was lightly crisp on the outside but chewy on the inside; not the thin, cracker-like crust of so many pizzas back in Dallas, and also 'round here at some places. The balance of tomato sauce and cheese was great and toppings were fresh. (One half Hawaiian and one half mushroom: ours is a mixed pizza marriage!) Most notably, however was that the pie was not greasy. Not. Greasy. Not. Greasy. That right there was worth the price of admission. The only other time we ordered from Tony Lena's we got subs, and they were great, too. So great, in fact, that our big dog decided to gobble one of them when we had our backs turned. The two ladies working behind the counter were so pleasant: friendly, personable, and professional. Our only regret? Why did it take us over seven years to find this place right here in our little seaside town?! We're definitely fans and will be back to work our way through the menu. read more

Ordered a Buffalo chicken calzone. It was cold inside, cheese wasn't even melted AND the Buffalo chicken was disintegrating it was disgusting so we called back for a refund. Refused a refund. Terrible customer service. We have ordered there a few times before, never again will I waste money on an establishment that doesn't value their customers. I love this Tony Lena's! I've gone to them for years, usually on a Friday evenings with my mom. Always great food, amazing service and the girls are always a pleasure to talk to while we waited. Since Covid I've been a lot less but the one time I did go they were quick and clean and efficient to all the BOH guidelines. read more

Just happened across this hole in the wall deli. Co-workers thought the logo looked like me so we decided to stay. Italian sub stingy on the cold cuts. Tuna sub overstuffed but too much mayo. Entertaining argument outside between the Coke delivery truck and another driver over a parking space out front! Very colorful language. read more

BOMB pizza the service is great as well you call a order ahead and they tell you it will be ready in 20 min you get there with 5 min to spare and its ready right then and there good thing and bad i guess but they never let you down the subs a big as well i can normally eat a large one from other places but here i could only eat half of it lol price range is ok i guess the othere day i got three large subs a large fry and a thing of mazzerelo sticks and it came out to 40 something a lil much if you ask me but its whatever read more

I order here once a month and live 5 minutes walking to it. Their pizza is great and I love their tuna sub! It does have a lot of mayo in it occasionally. The only gripe I have is that sometimes when you order, say, a ham and cheese sub, there is barely any meat in it! I have only been disappointed that one time, though. Other that that, some of the women in there could use an attitude change, but I wouldn't enjoy working in a sub shop either. read more

Their fresh baked bread and dough are yet to be rivaled and their angus shaved steak and cheese melts in your mouth. their pizza is still my absolute favorite on the north shore. classic cheese, bacon + pineapple (yes, pineapple belongs on pizza), and buffalo chicken are my absolute favorites. Italian sub with "the works", Tuna (if that's ur kind of thing), and steak and cheese are out of this world. Even their catering menu is great! 6 foot subs, sub rings, chicken broccoli ziti. You name it- they do it! Their employees are a great core group of people and you never see an unfamiliar face when you walk in the door for your take out- making everything you order super consistent each time. If I could give negative stars I would!! They always mess up the order and the Italians are so sloppy..
