Unfortunately, my first visit to "Tony's Brick Oven" with my sister was less of a culinary dream and more of a charred nightmare. I was in the mood for a masterpiece; instead, I got a math lesson in how many things can go wrong at once. The bad taste started before we even saw a menu. The person who greeted us was remarkably rude, offering each of us snickering, condescending comments. We were unhappy from the get-go, and in hindsight, that was the warning shot. But because I had a singular, non-negotiable mission for pizza, we stayed. That was my first mistake. I started with an extra cheese pizza, but it arrived with a crust and bottom so burnt it could have doubled as charcoal for a summer BBQ. Then came the 'Margherita' slice--a term usually implying fresh mozzarella and basil. What did I find instead? A single, solitary slice of regular mozzarella cheese thrown on top like an afterthought. Like, really? As a self-proclaimed 'garlicky kind of girl' who enjoys eating garlic straight from the clove, I had high hopes for the garlic knots. Sadly, they weren't just burnt; they were hard enough to be classified as construction materials. To add insult to injury, they were completely devoid of actual garlic flavor. For someone who lives for that pungent, zesty kick, it was a heartbreak in dough form. The 'service' at the end was the cherry on top of this overcooked sundae. When it came time to pay, I handed over the cash, and the guy stood there with an expectant look, clearly waiting for a tip. Considering I was basically paying for the privilege of eating carbon, he got lucky I paid at all, let alone in cash. Tipping 15-20% is standard for satisfactory service, but for a meal this inedible, a tip was the last thing on the menu. This was one meal that definitely didn't earn its keep. For starters, hubby ordered a rice ball and the counter guy cupped it full palm to toss into the oven. Then full palm cupped another one from the fridge to replace in the case. No tongs, no gloves, bare handed, after just handling a newspaper! Behind him another guy is making pizza, using his bare hands to grab handfuls of toppings from a bowl and drop them onto the dough, while using the very same ungloved hand to eat pieces of the topping as he's prepping. No gloves. When brought to the attention of the counter guy, he merely shrugged. (Big surprise there.) Before ordering I specifically asked if the Italian wedding soup had little meatballs in it and I was told YES. And this is what I got... little pieces of chopped SPAM. Seriously gross. When I arrived home I dumped it immediately, along with the riceball. Ugh. If you care anything at all about sanitary conditions DO NOT ORDER FOOD HERE. We frequent this quaint pizzeria at least once a week. The cold antipasto and pizza are by far the best we've had! Hands down! The antipasto salad has pickled veggies with fresh meats and cheeses expertly plated and then drizzled with balsamic dressing. A large can serve 3-4 people. Their dishes are prepared fresh and have a that Sunday dinner taste. Located on Bay Street in a small plaza-it's hard to miss, but when in the area support this family business. Got two pizza slices - the square margarita and the veggie without cheese. Both were tasty and vegetable selection was great. The margarita has a good thin crust and the other had a deeper crust. It was quiet for Saturday at 1 pm but place was clean and staff friendly. Yes, could have been tastier in terms of crust and pizza sauce. Overall I tend to like brick oven pizza, I have had this place recommended to me in the past and have gone but recently I have found the pizza to be burnt and the crust to be frankly way too hard to bite into. The service is nice and the staff is friendly and the vibes are probably nicer than your average pizzeria. I have been a customer of Tony's for 25 years. Tonight I ordered vodka sauce pie. It came with NO mozzarell. When I called him back to advise of this, he was very adamant to say I was lying, and that there was mozzarella on it. This is a 25 year customer. I had come back to pick the pie up. The driver came in my home and looked at the pie. The driver confirmed to me and my wife that there was no mozzarella on it. When I called Tonys back and I look at the pie? First off if I could give 10 stars I would. 5 is the most available to me so that is what I chose. To start, I only order chicken parmigiana, since that is my litmus test for all places. Their red sauce is so delicious, not too sweet not too acidic but pleasant on the tongue. The portion is large enough I did not feel hungry after. The chicken was absolutely breaded by hand, did not feel like frozen chicken like some places use. The driver was so nice and really appreciated my promptness to get to him, which I completely understand. Their price for chicken parm dinner was about in line with the rest of the island but for what you pay, the food is well worth it. The prices are very reasonable- the hot sandwiches and heroes are big and generously filled. The calzone, which comes fried or baked, is also huge and filled to bursting with cheese. The garlic knots have real pieces of crushed garlic on them. I'm getting hungry...I'm on my way to call Tony's. I recently went in for a slice, when I received the slice I went to pay. I asked I believe it was the owner (who I've read about on other posts - older man with a thick mustache and glasses) how much it was. He said $3.60. I gave him a $5 he proceeded to give me .40 cents back and immediately turned around and walked into the back kitchen...and closed the door. I'm not going to get into an argument over $1 but that was just plain rude. I was brought up with manners so I will not speak rudely of him, but wanted others to know what type of service you may receive if you patronize this establishment. Food was bomb even 45 mins after I placed the order (placed order at 1pm, picked up around 1.30pm got home at 1.45pm) the breads/food still crushy the outside , soft the inside. Food was perfectly baked, no overcooked or burn. Love their chicken parm on garlic bread. Soo good. I wish they put more chicken tho, and more stuffing in the rice ball too, just to balance the amount of rice/meat (my personal preference). Highly recommended. Staff was nice too. This is your not your typical "neighborhood" pizza spot. They're a restaurant too! And they have a good amount of people eating here for lunch or having dinner. After my hubby raved about this place(since he gets lunch here when working in the area) he finally bought me here during lunch one day. Staff is friendly and we manged to get a good seat. Ordered a chicken roll(to share) and some slices of pizza. They were nice enough to bring it to our table and we enjoyed our lunch with some cream sodas. The sauce they have is really good. It doesn't have an overpowering taste and goes great on anything. The pizza is nice and thin, not too thin that it's too crunchy but enough not to be doughy...you get me? Well if you do or don't you must try it for yourself. The chicken roll was good, i was actually thinking of not sharing my piece. On the next trip to SI I will make sure to order my own.
