This review is Wife Approved. There is nothing I avoid more than sending my wife to auto mechanics. I've never understood why someone would open with the position of taking advantage of their customers, but more than once while traveling The Wife would call from the mechanic with the estimate and I told her to leave that conman and wait until I came home. But as usual, everything breaks when I leave on another trip. The Wife's car had a bad backup light and it needed to get fixed. I checked Yelp! (as usual) and saw Toole's Garage rated very well. Turns out it was for a reason. They were accommodating for scheduling, and when The Wife made it there, they greeted her warmly and were open and honest with the discussion. It was a quick repair and the dollar amount had substantially less than three digits. Whoa, this place plays the long game. Treat your customers fairly and warmly, charge them time and materials for simple tasks, and watch them come back with more business. Finally, a place where I can tell her to go when I'm on the road and she will be treated like a customer and not a mark. We'll be back again. read more

I love how you have to come in for a free inspection before they can give you any rough estimate. I just wanted to get a "rough" estimate and they can't give you one on the phone. Even if you just tell them the exact part you ordered and the car you have. I wanted a simple rough estimate how much it would cost to get coilovers installed on my Subaru. This place is simply amazing! The staff is very professional and friendly. I decided to visit for an oil change due to all the good reviews here even though it was 35 min away from my house. All I can say is I'm glad I did. The oil change took just an hour, and I received my car much better than I handed it. They also filled my windshield washer fluid, and even run a quick diagnosis on the car and they sent me a report with photographs which I didn't even ask for these things. + Very affordable. I'd definitely recommend this place to everyone. Don't go elsewhere! read more

Do not take your car to Tooles Garage in San Carlos! A half star is even too nice. They made me buy an expensive part without even figuring out the problem. Ends up I did not need the part which they still made me pay for and they did not fix the original problem. When they tried to say I needed more parts to fix the problem I took my car to someone else much more capable and reasonably priced. Tooles would not return my original part to me when I asked, they most likely sold my working part to make even more money off of me. Toole's also kept my car 6Xs longer then they said they would need, I was told it was partly because they did a car inspection (which I did not ask for) and then they tried to sell me on several other services which were not needed. Toole's Garage will just try to charge you as much as they can and have no problem charging for unnecessary work, I would stay clear of taking your car here. When I tried to write this review on the Tooles Garage website it was rejected, looks like they only accept positive reviews. read more

Toole's is phenomenal. I took my 2009 Subaru Forester there because I had gone to Carlsen's Subaru in Redwood City and they quoted me almost $8000 in recommended repairs and maintenance. I wasn't looking to pay anything near that amount and felt like I was getting played the fool. I took it to Toole's and they were honest and transparent about what was recommended vs essential and how the various fixes would impact the long term longevity of the car. They also offered a Lyft ride to and from the shop which was essential considering that I had to take it in on a work day. They gave me a quote on a few different items, each of which was less than half what the dealer quoted me. What's more, the VIP inspection + the quote was $0 whereas it cost me ~$150 at the dealer. I'll never go the dealer again, but I will definitely be going to Toole's again. read more

Horrible experience...These people are so OVERPRICED. You better check with other places before you take your car there. They will never tell you how much are the true cost of parts and labor. Repairs here will cost you three times other places. My daughter took her car here, and they overcharged her by a factor of three. We paid over one thousand dollars for front brake pads and a tail light! They changed the tail light assembly (about $400). I don't think they even needed to change the entire assembly. And for the front brakes, they charged $650. What upsets me is that Dave (the owner) was not even willing to tell me the cost of parts and labor. RIP OFF PLACE. BE CAREFUL. read more

I am very disappointed in this business. I made an appointment for 10:30am, just for regular maintenance. They were not able to service my car until 1pm (then why do appointments?), they said the car would be ready by 2:30pm came back for it at 3:30pm and was not ready yet. I lost my full day on this without a car and I could have planned if they would have been honest upfront. Car was ready until after 5pm. read more

They had a very efficient web based estimating service that I was able to sign off on remotely. When my truck was finished they promptly called to tell me it was ready in a very short time. I brought my car in for an intermittent hard starting problem, along with an apparent loss of power. When I was asked to pre-approve up to $350 for "diagnostics", I agreed, since I'm aware that intermittent problems can be tricky to track down. I'd rather find and fix the problem than just throw components at it. What I didn't know, and wasn't told, was that that wasn't just to cover diagnosing the problem I asked to have fixed, but that they were going to inspect and diagnose -everything- that might be imperfect. So I paid them 2-3 hours labor, to discover and tell me things I already knew, like "bad turn signal" and "leaking half-shaft boot". I'm still wondering what the condition of my left-rear tire has to do with a hard starting problem, but apparently that's critical to know before fixing it. Won't be going back, and for damned sure the slight coolant leak on my other car will be addressed by some other shop - one that diagnoses and fixes what I ask for, not every imperfection they can locate. I know the hood is bent and doesn't shut easily, and the tires are worn unevenly. I see no value in paying someone to tell me that. read more

Another great job! Went in to get my Honda serviced to replace an oil pan and vTEC gasket. They had been watching the oil pan for about the last five years. I like that they keep good medical records of your car and keep an eye on what needs to be done now and what can wait. They aren't trying to sell you a part or service--they are trying to keep your car running smoothly when your car needs those repairs and not when they need to sell you something. If you aren't getting your car serviced here, you are missing out on the most honest/quality work vehicle inspections and repairs there is on the planet! Toole's garage made me do over $1000 of services including diagnostic fees and told me they still didn't know what was wrong. I then took the car to Ford dealership and they told me I need full transmission replacement. I called back Toole's garage for a quote of transmission replacement. They quoted me over $10,000, this was 30% higher than the dealership quote and higher than the vehicle's worth. I told Brad at Toole's that if they were able to find the real issue with the vehicle, I wouldn't have done the service they recommend on my vehicle. I have a hard time trusting these guys to fix my problem for the high prices that they are charging. read more

I am so happy I came here. I called after getting quotes for my BMW break repair and immediately felt at ease over the phone. I took my car in around 8:15am and was greeted with great service. They have a Lyft partnership that takes you anywhere within a ten mile radius so I went to work and when I came back, my breaks were in great shape and they gave me a really fair price. Toole is a well run auto repair shop, they work on a big variety of cars from hot rods to hybrid and regular car's. I dealt with Mark about the car I had where the rat eat the wiring a real mess they made out of the wiring, Mark new exactly what was needed to be done after diagnosing the mess.The rats eat the wiring several different areas from the Engine to the wiring for the Electric fuel pump . The work was done very professional and you couldn't even tell where the work was done, when they were finished. I was very happy with the quality of work that was done. read more

I went to Todd's Garage at the recemmondation of another mechanic person...... this person has recommended other people and it was always a winner. But not this time. This is definitly a high class excellent business, elegant office space - great italian coffee pods. Problem is that the bid I got was bothering me and decided to get more bids even after I had already given a deposit. - which they wanted right upfront. One bid was quite a few hundreds under TG and several hundreds of dollars under the third bid- and this repair shop in Palo Alto has an excellent reputation along with a fair price. No luxuries attached, honest work, fair prices. Payment due when I picked up the car, substantial deposit was required when signinng the contract at TG If you have money to spend for atomosphere I highly recommend TG's but if you are watching your money - I strongly encourage getting multiple bids before making a decision - ask lots of questions.....amazing how different the answers can be. read more

First, they know what they are talking about. Second, Trina is awesome! They actually took like license number and were able to tell me what I need for my specific car. I could not find any data online about the model of car I had. It was a Ford Fiesta ST. Trina was able to tell me what I needed and why. Time to go to the track but need to stop by Tooles to get er done right. They are detailed/meticulous so go with the flow and ask questions for anything that doesn't make sense. I trust their work ethic. I brought up the fact the other tire shop incorrectly setup the tire sensors on the wrong rim. So he checked with me and made sure the unidirectional tires were installed on the side I wanted. Toole's also supplied me a spare serpentine drive belt while I was waiting. Nice! read more

I spoke with Trina, who was very helpful and friendly, and I felt comfortable going with them based on the reviews and their coupon to change my oil. Hubby dropped off the car this morning and told me that he was impressed by them because they seemed honest and the garage was busy. I get a text an email with the inspection report. I've been going to these guys for probably close to 5 years now with my 2005 Honda Pilot (255k miles). Very knowledgeable staff without the usual pressure of additional services you normally get at a shop. The staff is very personable and almost feels like my extended family. They do a really nice job documenting each visit you go in for so you can see what's wrong and decide if you need to take action yet or not. Waiting area is cozy with wifi. Pricing is a tad higher than most places but that extra cost is going towards a very thorough review of your car, a great staff and all those top offs of your fluids. read more

My Honda Civic was barely starting, so I called Toole's and they were able to take me in first thing the next morning. Everything from dropping the car off to picking it up was very smooth. Their online quote tool is very convenient. You can approve/deny each recommended repair job with its listed price through the website, which is something I've never seen before with any other shop. They were able to repair everything very quickly and were communicative when there happened to be a slight delay due to delayed shipping of parts.
