I had been staring at pictures of Ragoon Bistro for a month and a half like a man preparing for battle. Finally walked in and immediately thought, alright, this place is classy. Modern, clean, cool crowd, and somehow I still walked in carrying a cooler like I was headed to a construction site. I ordered the KPS dumpling and the Lafayette salad because I had read some review complaining the salad got soggy and the portions were too big. Folks, if your salad gets soggy because you poured all the dressing on it and let it sit there like a science experiment, that is between you and God. That dumpling showed up hot and smelling so good I forgot my own name for a minute. I looked at it and thought, that ain't gonna fill me up. Ten minutes later I was sitting there defeated, full, and emotionally attached to a noodle. The best move I made was eating the dumpling first and taking the salad home. Boom. Two meals. Problem solved. Einstein level strategy. Great service, fair prices, no wait, and honestly way better than I expected. Whoever gave this place four stars must've been having a personal crisis. Admittedly, I have only had takeout from Rangoon Bistro. I intend to dine in soon, and they just moved locations in SE. Most recently I ordered the Laphet salad and the "KPS" also known as very large dumpling. Both were good. I might actually like them to be smaller, as the dumpling was a little gooey, and the salad took me so long to eat that it got a little soggy. They're very unique flavors that I don't crave all the time, but when I want them, these hit the mark. I'd love to try it their curry, potatoes, noodles, or chicken next time. read more

The crunch of the carrots tossed in a bold lime and fish sauce was balanced with a hint of sweetness and chili spice. The roasted peanuts added more texture to the crunch. It was nice to eat that with the other dishes we got like a crunchy pickle addition. The large dumpling was yummy- it was juicy and bursting with meat. The chili soy sauce it sat in was nice to drizzle on the other food we got. The pork spare ribs just fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. It wasn't too fatty bc it was braised. The cocktails are pre-batched, but don't let that fool you because they were all superb. The bartender did an excellent job bringing out the spices and nuanced flavors in each drink. The fried chicken was a particular standout...VERY crispy and very well-prepared. Parking is street-only, and the area is VERY busy, so be prepared to park a few blocks (or more) away. I'm a sucker for good Burmese food. I always must have my fix when visiting Portland! We stopped by here after hanging around Mt. Tabor since it was conveniently nearby. Rangoon Bistro continues to be our go-to spot for the extended family to enjoy comfort food in a relaxed setting. The Crispy Fried Potatoes are one of the best starch experiences I've ever had. The Tea Leaf Salad is amazing. And, though I'm not an expert on Fried Chicken, the Rangoon version always manages to make it onto our table. Even though it's justifiably popular, their order-at-the-counter business model seems to work for allowing us to always find a table. Really enjoyed my first visit there. There was plenty of nearby street parking and seating on a Tuesday evening. You order and pay at the counter, but get table service for the remainder of the meal. Service was quick and very friendly; ambience is casual and fun. The menu isn't very big, but there were still great choices, even though I don't eat mammals. We ate family style and ordered the Shan Khao Swe (noodles), 5 piece Fried Chicken, Crispy Potatoes and two orders of the Pork Ribs. I've never had anything like it! The fried chicken was juicy and so flavorful. The coconut rice that came with it was also a great touch as the sweetness balanced out the salt in the chicken. Amel Aloo Hnat, Beef And Potato Curry (ntree) was very tender and delicious although not what you think of as a curry. Yogurt marinated beef chuck, slowly braised with burmese spices. Have been coming here since my partner and I moved two years ago and their food is always so delicious and fresh. We always order their cold Burmese tea leaf salad and shan tofu dishes (vegetarian). This place provides a lot of vegetarian options and they can make the tea leaf salad, which typically comes with shrimp floss and fish sauce, vegetarian and still delicious. Don't miss out on their shan tofu dish. This is my favorite dish and it's a cooling chickpea tofu dish packed with flavor. Their tofu nway noodle dish is also amazing and we always order that regardless of the season. This time around we also tried their fried chicken and wow, it was amazing. Tea leaf salad: - Very nicely seasoned and salted. And oiled. Might seem weird to say about a salad, but that stuff is actually still very important. - Great color with the green and purple cabbage. - Really nice textures. The cabbage had a nice amount of crunch and wasn't too bitter. The fried fava beans and peanuts also gave some nice crunch. - I felt like it was missing something though. I was disappointed that the tea leaves didn't really add much flavor. I thought they would, but they didn't. And there wasn't really any brightness or acid. Or sweetness, or spice, or something else to add some "pop". It felt kinda "flat" to me. Granted, I asked them to leave the tomatoes out, but I don't get the sense that the tomatoes would have changed things too much. Pork noodles: - I liked this dish a bit more. - The noodles had some nice bite to them, but could have used a bit more bite. - The pork was pretty good. Some pieces were more fatty, others more meaty. It had like a sweet and savory type of flavor to it. - I really appreciated the texture of the pork. It's a huge pet peeve of mine when meat has chewy connective tissue and pieces of unrendered fat. This pork had absolutely none of that. When there were larger pieces of fat it truly did melt in your mouth as you eat it. - I'm not sure exactly what the sauce was, but it reminded me of the "brown sauce" you get at Chinese restaurants. Savory, some small amount of sweetness, and a little flat. Not as "goopy". - I felt like this dish was missing some "pop" in it too. But similarly, I have to caveat that I didn't include much of that pickled cabbage. I'm not much of a fan of pickled flavors, so I only included a few strands here and there. I think what I loved about this place the most is the quality of the food far exceeds the overall dining experience. It is casual. You order at the counter and it shows up at your table. The tables are basic. The silverware sits in a bucket with some paper napkins in front of you. But that's not what you came for. You came because the moment you walk in the door, the smell is intoxicating. The staff truly cares that you are enjoying the food. And it shows. What we ordered seemed like the perfect balance of their offerings. The very large dumpling, literally what it's called was this silky, smooth rice noodle wrapper, filled with orc, and possibly mushroom goodness. But what was most sublime was the sauce it was sitting in. A combination of sweet soy, chili, crisp, and crispy shallots We also had this shredded cabbage sort of salad that had some sort of nuts in it. Very tasty! And a perfect mid meal bridge to the next item. The fried chicken, with a type of sauce and steamed rice. It was all very flavorful, the perfect temperature, and juicy.
