I saw a dish in others' reviews with is a stuffed bean curd with pork, crab and chestnuts and fried crispy on top of thin fried vermicelli noodles. That was absolutely delicious and unique (and garlicky!). I also had the short rib mussaman curry which was out of this world! The flavors of the curry were rich and peanutty, with chunks of perfectly cooked potatoes. The meat was thick and pretty tender. I got spicy level and it wasn't too much for me. Their spice level runs low here. It's served with roti and I got a side of sticky rice. The sticky rice was a very small portion for $4. Hubby had the tofu summer rolls which were fresh and healthy. He got the khao soi coconut noodle soup and the bit that I tried was very yummy. The noodles were bouncy, and the flavors all worked well. Their food and cocktails are presented to impress. Edible flowers, blinks lights in the cocktail... a cute date night spot. We sat inside a tuk tuk! Service was friendly and attentive. I went on a first date here, and when my friend asked how the date went, I kept raving about Khao San Pearl, as dinner here had been the main event, and my friend had to ask, Uh OK but what about the person? This place was just too good for me to not bring it up first! As someone with celiac disease, I felt pretty confident I wouldn't get sick eating here, especially due to the knowledgeable labeling. And fried rice is my favorite dish and I always enjoy it, but I think it's a difficult dish to really set oneself apart in. However, the taste, texture and presentation felt really elevated, yet set at a pretty reasonable price. The service was so good that it was actually laughable: three different servers coming up in a very short period to check on us and pour water. All very nice! read more

My son and I arrived at 4:30pm on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised that Happy Hour was between 3-5pm. We were the only ones in the restaurant and ordered quickly - spring rolls, chicken ping, Chinese broccoli with crispy pork belly and Khao Soi with shrimp, all medium spice. Was visiting Portland just for the day with one of my good friend, this was our 2nd stop of the day and honestly was super good! Presentation wise like WOW they did above and beyond, flavor of everything above and beyond, the ambiance of the whole place was very calm cozy and the decorations were lively. Had walked by this place so many times and finally gave it a try. The interior itself is roomy and spacious with large wood beams and fun Thai decor. We grabbed a couple menus and sat ourselves. Wound up going with the fish cakes and the basil chicken which we split. The food itself was tasty and flavorful. The portions I'd say were about mid range based on the price. We weren't the hungriest so I'd be interested in coming back and trying it another time. Service across the board was solid. We had water brought out immediately when we arrived which was great and the food also came out fast. I was a little confused on where to actually order and pay from since there was a pay here sign at the front but everything else was table service. We had such a great experience at Khao San Thai while visiting Portland. We started with the pork pot stickers and the sauce they came with was absolutely delicious. For our entrées we ordered the pineapple fried rice with pork, the ping skewers, and the pad see ew with chicken, everything was amazing. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful and really made the meal feel special. The drinks were phenomenal as well. On top of that, the service was wonderful -- the staff were incredibly kind and even offered to take photos for us. It made the whole experience feel very welcoming. There are a lot of Thai restaurants in Portland. Khao San is the hidden gem for Thai food in this city and they have been opened for over decades. Foods ; Pretty authentic taste like you eat the local foods in Thailand you might not need to ask any condiments to add on just tell your server what you wanna eat and the level of spice you can handle ..That's it !! Their food presentation is so beautiful, they garnish foods with eatable flowers and greens that make food more fancy and unique. I'd recommend the grilled menus such as Kor moo yang, Gai yang , Crying tiger or Ping, they marinated meats with their sauces and served with the house special dipping sauces moreover if you order smth grills, Do not forget to order papaya salad to eat with grill menu that is good combination like a perfect pair of red wine and steaks in version of dining at Thai cuisine. Other items that I would recommend are Khao Soi, Chineses broccoli with crispy pork belly, Pad thai, Pad see ew, Pad kee mao, Holy basil (Pad kra pow) , Duck curry, Massaman curry with crispy roti, Those items really hit the spot. You won't be disappointed if you order them for sure..!! Cocktails; they have a lot of signature cocktails and mocktails on the drink menu, their cocktails are very interesting, It is combined between Eastern - Tropical ingredients mixed with Western mixology style, for example they make cocktails from Thai tea, Lychee, Green tea and other tropical ingredients that they can find in the US . I was NOT expecting this place to be as good as it was, but as I sit here in my post-meal food coma, I'm happy I stopped by for a late lunch. I had their Khao Soi and it was delicious! The broth was so full of flavor, and then the bowl was overflowing with fresh ingredients, from the chunks of white chicken meat to the egg noodles and veggies. Bonus points for providing such a massive serving, I couldn't make it more than 2/3 of the way through my meal, and I was STARVING when I arrived. Great spot if you're hungry for quick, but still top notch Thai food at a decent price. read more

3 stars cause the service is well...not good. The food was all pretty tasty as it's always been (wings were a tad dry but fry was on point). They only had 2 people working the front which didn't appear to be a short staff issue but just how they do it but hopefully i am wrong. When entering they hand you a menu then point you to a seat instead of walking you there. Took quite a while for the server to then bring waters over so definitely took advantage of them being there to place food order asap. First couple dishes came out but with no sharing plates so used napkins after waiting a bit then next dishes came then lastly plates and rice (is it's own dish as none came with). Would seem best if they just did qr code ordering or have you order at the bar esp since you need to pay at the end at the bar anyway. We didn't get drinks but the table next to use had theirs quite delayed since only 2 people in front so one person would also be bartender and greet people that enter but also had tables. Had a couple dishes come to our table that weren't ours and they didn't seem to know where they were supposed to go. Would be nice if they also had dishes with rice if people aren't planning on family style (not sure if they still have their lunch specials that djd this and were great) and obviously getting their service straightened out. read more

The best way to go at it is to go with a group and share everything family style. Because wow, all of these were a must try. The staff were soo friendly, they got the best staff at Khao San! We got the Hoy Joh and the chicken wings to start (not pictured). Both were crispy and flavorful but the Hoy Joh with the dipping sauce is a must try! The pork and shrimp stuffing was greatly paired with crispy tofu skin. The Crying Tiger was cooked well, but must eat it before it goes cold! The dipping sauce was a perfect pairing. The Khao San Holy Basil Chicken is a signature for a reason. Explosive flavors paired with jasmine rice to tame it out. The Khao Soi is a must if you had to pick one dish! Creamy curry with egg noodles and tender chicken. The papaya salad was solid, and you can never go wrong with mango sticky rice. read more

Disclaimer: I've been here several times previously, and have always had a good experience. The food was great, the service good, and no complaints. So I'm recounting this latest experience as a heads up to the new ownership and my rating is based on that experience. Since I've had a good experience here before and was craving Thai food, I suggested that we meet here when some coworkers wanted to grab lunch. We were greeted and sat promptly, and our drinks arrived quickly. I got a Thai iced tea with coconut cream, and it was delicious. And free refills! The server mentioned that she was having some trouble with the POS system, which was apparently new. She also mentioned that the place was under new ownership as of that day (!) and they were still getting used to a few things. No worries! We placed our order and waited for the food to arrive. The appetizer did arrive in a reasonable time frame, and it was really good - fish cakes served with a sweet and spicy sauce. We waited some more for our entrees, and finally got up to inquire as to their whereabouts after forty minutes had passed and the couple at the table behind us who had sat down just fifteen minutes earlier had received their food. The server (a different server, apparently there was a shift change that wasn't mentioned) claimed that the ticket had never made it to the kitchen; she said it had printed in front instead of the back of house. I found that a little suspicious because both the appetizer and mains were on the same ticket, so how could one item make it out but not the others? Whatever. To her credit, she was very nice and apologetic, and offered to comp most of our food, which we gratefully took her up on. Unfortunately, we had to get the entrees to go since we had waited for so long already. When the rest of the food arrived, one of the dishes was missing. Apparently it was never entered at all? Thankfully the mains were comped as promised, and she even threw in some additional fish cakes as an apology for the hassle, so my friend who never did get his entree at least had something to eat. We didn't have time to deal with it, so we just left. Once I finally got home and went to eat my belated lunch (spicy crispy basil chicken) it was... terrible. The chicken was overcooked, tough, and stringy, and gave my jaw quite the workout. I still ate it because I was starving at that point, but it was pretty awful. I'm not sure if the change in ownership included a change in the kitchen, but I really hope this isn't an indication of future experiences! It would be a shame for this neighborhood spot to fall victim to poor ownership and lack of care in the kitchen. I'd give it another try based on previous positive experiences, but I'll be wary. read more

I came here with a friend right off a flight a few weeks ago. It was awkwardly in the middle of the afternoon, and surprisingly they were still open for lunch service. The place was rather vacant given the hour but the manager(?) was very amiable and sat at our table to converse with us for a bit. I was looking to get the typical pad see ew, when the manager advised to try something more adventurous, and I ended getting the Pad Char Pla which is a fried catfish curry per his recommedation, and the calamari. The catfish was definite a W by the owner. Calamari was just okay. In summary the food was food, but the hospitality was welcoming! Highly recommend! read more

I have only had Thai a few times and while it's not my go-to I can usually find something I like. I had the Garlic Chicken, which had a nice garlicky flavor sauce on it but unfortunately the chicken wasn't the best quality and tasted like it in a rubbery sort of way. When our party of three were ready to head off to the Timberwolves game I went up to cover the bill for 1 appetizer and 3 entrees and was advised that the total came out to $140. It took a few minutes to sort out that we were not the party of six who were still sitting at the booth next to where we were eating and our bill was correctly sorted out. My friends seemed to like what they ordered and said that they would go back in the future but I might try a different place next time. Regardless how friendly and funny the people working there are, there just wasn't anything screaming out to me in happiness that I needed to return for. read more

I had the Spicy Crispy Chicken with Basil and failed to notice the word spicy. The flavor and texture were wonderful, it was just too spicy for me. So if you're a spice wimp like me, make sure you look for the spicy symbol and ask for it mild. My coworkers dishes all looked great, including the fried catfish with veggies, the chicken pad thai, the holy basil fried rice with beef and more. Everyone seemed very satisfied. I'm very eager to go back and try more items from the delicious looking menu, including the crispy chicken with rice, the calamari, the chicken wings, the pad thai with shrimp and more. Oh my yummies. We stopped in here (THANK GOD,) before an event for our school. We met friends here and they had ordered us vegan Nam Khao with tofu and they got chicken. This is NOT on the menu y'all. And for that I say I AM SO SORRY!!! Lol but I wasn't sorry. I wasn't sorry to eat that at all. It was SO full of texture and flavor OH MY YES. The rice was crispy and fried to perfection. The tofu was perfectly cooked - not GREASY at all and it was such a light color you could tell the frier oil was clean and fresh. The cilantro and green onion was so bright and fresh as was the romaine boats we had to make the lettuce wraps with. But to me the lime on top was the chef's kiss. It just gave it the acidity and brought all the flavors together. PERFECTION. And guys. I'm SO sorry for reviewing this dish as it was off menu. But it was SO good. I got a Thai Whiskey which was an old fashioned with Thai whiskey. It was lighter and not as harsh as a traditional Old Fashioned. My husband got a Pataya, which was very good. Fresh and bright which was a take on a mojito. Our two friends had the Lychee Lemonade Martini and LOVED it. Then we had spring rolls which I regret not taking photos of. Because guys they were DELISH. But what knocked my socks off was the peanut sauce. I'm not EVER a fan of peanut sauce. It's too sweet or too thick or too something. But this was a great consistency, and the flavor. OH The flavor. It was peanutty but also coconut notes and a bit of spice? I don't know but it was REALLY good. Finally we got some Coco Potato Fries which were SO incredibly delicious. What surprised me was that these were clearly deep fried but NOT at all greasy. And man the flavor. Sweet and coconut with a delicious dipping sauce. Oh man. The set up inside is SO cute. We sat at a BIG long table right when you come in and we're next to the Tuktuk which was SO cool.
