I have only been using Top Hat Cleaners for about a year, but was referred to them by a neighbor that has used them for something like 20! They are the nicest, most professional people! They do an excellent job with a variety of cleaning jobs, from very fine silk blouses to comforter and sham sets, and their prices are reasonable. I would give them TEN STARS if i could!!! I have waited for ten full laundry/dry cleaning loads before writing this so I would have a reasonably good sample of their work. Here is what i have found... They are everything one could hope for in a laundry/dry cleaners; Professional, friendly, EXPERT, attractively priced, family run, loyal and absolutly AWESOME!!! Let me explain in just a little further detail... I have looked around, and I do mean around; Penninou, Crystal Springs, and many, many strip-mall-based Mom and Pop shops in hopes of finding the Holy Grail of cleaners; expert, affordable, friendly and hopefully family run. Well, I have finally found it in Top Hat. Run by Chester and Elizabeth, who inherited it from, after having worked alongside, their parents, who founded it in 1953 they have managed to put big wins in each of the major columns as well an many minor columns of running a laundry/dry cleaning business. Having spent a professional career as CEO of various companies in cities like SF, Manhattan and London, I have built up quite a wardrobe of hand tailored or generally well crafted garments. I have special considerations for the cleaning of many of my clothes; some are hand cut from tailors on Saville Row or Paris, Milan or Naples, the suit/blazer/trouser fabrics, in general, require skillful handling, professional knowledge and care, also many shirts have thick, mother of pearl buttons, men, if you have them, you know what I mean, shirts that require NO starch - ever, from time-to-time little stain removal emergencies, i seem to have more than my fair share, and of course, the occasional alteration. Chester and Elizabeth's Top Hat Cleaners has met EVERY expectation I have of them, and surpassed many others. For example, a common mistake, that nearly every other cleaner, save Penninou and Crystal Springs, (God Bless Lynette over at Crystal Springs ;) makes - namely, crushing the thick mother of pearl buttons found on the shirts from Borrelli or Barba for example, when they press, Top Hat NEVER HAS, as they they always hand press these particular shirts. They handle french cuffs as if all shirts were made this way. They return forgotten cuff links, left inside said french cuffed shirts ;-O, they ask Questions, all the time. They handle newer, more contemporary designers and their many higher tech fabrics with the same skill and care as they do sea island, super 150s, 180s and 220s. This is one time when there is truth in labeling, their store is aptly named - TOP HAT CLEANERS. After my white lace dress (which was yellowed from age) was rejected by several cleaners, I brought it to Top Hat based on positive yelp reviews. Chester said that he would have to take the spots off by hand, so it would be more expensive, but that he could do it. To me, this defines what's good about America.... he was up front with the cost and not afraid of a little hard work. I just picked up the dress today and it looks brand new. They truly go above and beyond in such a wonderful way...it's such a throwback to good old-fashioned customer service. For example, I have been dry cleaning a favorite sweater of mine for years in LA, and took it in to Top Hat. It has a few (less than well-hidden) moth holes, but alas, it's a favorite sweater, and I refuse to recycle it. Well, one dreary morning, I opted to wear it to work (under a coat, so the holes would be hidden), where lo and behold, I noticed that Top Hat had stitched the holes shut for me!! I typically use a very inexpensive "you get what you pay for" dry cleaner in San Francisco for my blouses and work suits. For my nicer dresses or embroidered / expensive pieces however I wanted to use someone that was reliable and had a good track record. So, based on the Yelp reviews I decided to try Top Hat Cleaners and am so impressed that I am going to start to bring all of my dry cleaning here, even though it is more expensive. I had about 14 items to dry clean and every piece came back clean and wrinkle-free. The gentlemen that was behind the counter when I dropped off and picked up was beyond kind and helpful. This place is a the best cleaners. A little out of the way, but I still will come with my cleaning. I have been coming to Top Hat for years with my cleaning and many more of my clothes needs. Living right down the street Top Hat Cleaner was very convienant and reasonable. I had been going there off and on for a few years.The last time I brought in a pair of carhartt bibs to be altered (shortened). The price was $12.00 which is average. I asked the owner of she needed to measure my inseam, she said she didn't. Instead she had me try them on, cuffed them and pinned them up and said they would be ready in 2 days. I told her my last cleaners would take my inseam size then I would have them take off an extra 2.5 to 3 inches because I put 5 to 10 lbs. of tools in the pockets and it streched the straps. She said she had done bibs before I picked them up and went to work wearing them only to be stepping all over the back of them. I brought them back to her and said they were at least a inch and a half long but asked her to take off closer to 3 inches because I know that when I put tools in them they sag down. She said ok I'm sorry it's my fault I'll fix it for free. Come back tomorrow. I said thank you and came back the next day and picked them up. The following morning off to work I go. I put on my bibs and to my surprise they still dragged on the ground. So after work I head back to top hat and again tell her they were still too long. She said I fixed them. I said I asked you to alter my pants so they didn't drag. 2 times later they still drag. I told her they dragged even before I loaded them up with tools. She then says well I will fix them but this time you have to pay. Dumbfounded I said I already paid you to do it and you've done it wrong twice. Then she started arguing with me right in front of another of her customers. I told her I needed them for work and this had become a great inconvenience for me to which she said that's not my problem. Disgusted and tired I told her fine I'll meet you half way. I'll pay half price even though it was her 2nd time screwing them up. She said no I did it for free the second time this time its $12.00. I explained to her that I paid for her to do it right the first time. She still refused and started to yell at me like it was my fault. I tried to explain the principle of customer service to her. I explained to her that the customer is always right even when not but in this case I clearly was . She then actually started yelling at me. S12.00 $12.00 $12.00 IS WHAT IT WILL COST. Fed up I told her she had the worst customer service and public relations I had ever seen and that she had just lost a customer forever to which she replied I have plenty of customers. When $12.00 becomes more important than good service I write bad reviews. I brought two jackets here. One is dark blue J Crew jacket and the other is white Ann Taylor jacket. When I got home, I saw there are some light blue stains on the back of my white jacket. I brought it back to the store and the Chinese lady agreed to cleaning it up without a charge. But when the day I picked up my jacket, this Chinese lady old my that her brother cleaned it twice to get all the stains off, and he thinks I should pay for it. I asked why and the Chinese lady said the stains came from my dark blue J crew jacket and even told me to throw my $300 jacket away because the color is fading!!! The thing is that I got my J Crew jacket dry cleaned at another store before, and there was no color fading problem at all. Why would the problem arise when I brought it to this place?! I really believe that they used cheap detergent to clean my jacket and made my jacket color fading. Since my car was double parked on the street (couldn't find parking spot), I didn't want to spend too much time to argue over a few dollars, I paid $8.75 for my jacket. Yes, they got me pay twice for cleaning my jacket, but they will never gain my business again!!! Don't be fooled by those fake good ratings!!! read more

Or when pressing it won't help. Who does that? Parking can be kind of a b**ch because it's just street parking but it turns over pretty quick so just be patient. read more

The BEST of the Peninsula! I trust any and all clothing to the gentle folks at Top Hat. They have done sweater repairs and matched the material flawlessly. They noticed a weak button and repaired it for me. In my former life of the 'suit' I trusted all my woolens to them. I have brought in silks with salad oil stains and lipstick smears on white. I would like to start by saying that the owners of Top Hat are lovely, lovely people who are super friendly and welcoming to all their customers. In addition, the quality of their work is quite good. Unfortunately, though, I had to take my business elsewhere because more often than not my clothes were not ready on the date that the owners said that they would be ready on. As a result, I was having to come back over and over again to pick up my clothes. One time they did one of my shirts and asked me to come back later for the other nine! They were of course apologetic each time but unfortunately could not rectify the situation. As I lead a busy life - as many of us do in the Bay Area - I really could not continue to use their services. If you are looking for a solid cleaners, Top Hat is a great choice. I have never been so disgusted and mistreated that I felt compelled to create a Yelp account and write a review. Terrible customer service. They are unprofessional and rude. I used this cleaners for about 2 years. This is the second time that a stain that I pointed out when I dropped off, was not removed. Both times I discovered the cleaning was not done properly when I went to use the garment. I was verbally abused, (yelled at and hung up on) when I called to point out the problem. I went for my refund and was yelled at again and told "I was wasting their time" (what about my time?) and to"Get lost", "I never want to see you again" by Elizabeth. Chester just stood there paralyzed in disbelief. I would not go to this cleaners - they don't do a good job and they respond in an unstable manner when you point out poor quality. Two other customers witnessed this incident in shock. I told my girlfriend, who referred me and went to them for decades, and she is not going back either. I have read more

I just opened up a yelp account so I could write about Top Hat Cleaners. I am from a big city so I have always been used to quick/efficient service (sometimes without the service part). After reading reviews on yelp, I decided to give them a try and have been more than happy with them! Chester and Elizabeth are amazing. They are so friendly, nice, flexible, and always willing to help. I was so shocked that they remembered my name after the first meeting and always appreciate the personal service. Elizabeth is very honest and will tell you if something does not need to be cleaned/cannot be cleaned. Chester is just a sweetheart and it always brightens up my day to see him. Not only is their service good but the prices are reasonable and they are GREEN to boot. I always bring back the wire hangers to recycle them (since we use plastic hangers at home) and they seem to appreciate that. Highly recommend them! read more

I signed up on Yelp to write my first ever review after being inspired by the dedication and attentiveness Top Hat provides for their customers -- they are truly the best dry cleaners I have ever been to! I had recently brought in one of my favorite jackets to be dry cleaned and had noticed today when I was putting it on, that the buckles around the wrists were missing. I took the jacket in and asked Chester if they happened to have them. He said he would look for it and give me a call. When I got home, I found the missing buckles on a different hanger (long story, but I had taken the same jacket in for cleaning a few weeks prior and brought it back again when i unfortunately got a new stain on it - the buckles were on the hanger from the previous dry cleaning!). Literally 5 minutes after I found the buckles, I received a call from Chester apologizing for not being able to find them and offering to have a tailor custom make replacement buckles! I felt terrible for all the effort he and his staff must have gone through looking for my buckles when in fact they were at home in the first place! The fact that he was willing to have a tailor custom-make replacements in the event they were not found speaks to the above and beyond, top notch service they provide to their customers. if you are looking for a new dry cleaners, look no farther than Top Hat! read more
