I've been told from friends and I saw in reviews that this spot is either hit or miss...but nothing in between. Luckily I went on a hit day! Loved this spot!! I went with a group of five and got a high table. Our server (lily) was super sweet, bubbly and very attentive. We had the Brussels sprouts for our appetizer and those were DELICIOUS! Then ended up getting the fish tacos that were a nice size and very filling. I really wanted to try their curry BUT not sure if it would be up to my standards haha. Not as good as it once was. Look this place is a Zoo town staple and absolutely it's great- but not like what it once was. If we didn't know the top hat from 6 years ago.. would probably give it a higher rating. Just to many little problems with this place now. It was one top of our list when taking the gang out.. but now at the bottom. Menu is fantastic, food it still so good. Hats off to the kitchen 100% the service and management always seems stressed and unhappy and it makes for a poor experience. It feels like you an inconvenience being a customer her. Probably just because everyone's overworked and understaffed but there's plenty of other places in town in the same situation, but the vibe of the restaurant is still positive and fun. Most of the times I've been here, it's been pretty alright. Burgers and everything are okay, I mean nothin to die for but, they're fine. Definitely happy they're doin shows here again, because the top hat has always been a better venue than restaurant, really no question there. But anyways, we went here the other day, and I truly think the public needs to know how horrible the damn chicken wings here are. It was kinda just funny how bad they were. 0 flavor, soggy even though they basically didn't really have any sauce on em. I mean all around, they were the worst wings my aunt and I had ever had in our entire lives. So yeah, eating at the tophat is usually fine. And props to them for doing shows again! BUT DO NOT GET THE CHICKEN WINGS. I'm not a religious gal, but I almost prayed to god after eating these, in hopes to maybe have a better chance at avoiding food poisoning. Oh my goodness gracious. We spent 3 days in Missoula and ended up eating two of our dinners here because our first meal was so delicious. Top Hat is located in a prime spot downtown with a large indoor area and a huge outdoor patio as well. It was super hot out so we opted to sit indoors and we had a 30 minute wait on a Monday night. The entire dinner and cocktail menu is extremely tasty-sounding and we had a hard time choosing our meals but went with the ginger pork lettuce wraps and the French dip. My husband started with a beer and I had the rosemary peach cocktail. The drink was perfect, refreshing and with complex flavors from the peach shrub and fresh herbs. Our meals came out and we're absolutely incredible. I haven't had a meal that great in a really long time. I will daydream about those lettuce wraps for many weeks to come. The meat was perfectly seasoned with rich flavors and amazing texture. The French dip also rocked with perfectly cooked sirloin steak in the sandwich. On our next visit, we came on a Wednesday night and we're seated immediately. We ordered the poke (recommended by our waiter) and the cheeseburger and again, we were more than completely satisfied with everything. If I lived nearby, I would go here weekly. I ended up with the poke bowl after being warned that it may be a little spicy. The first bite... I ate a little rice and a whole friggin fresh jalapeño round. It was quite dark, so I couldn't see my food. While I sat and waited for the searing pain to stop, my friends enjoyed their food. I used my light on my phone and picked out the fresh jalapeño. Came here with my girlfriend hoping to have a good bite to eat. Both of our schedules are so busy so it's hard for us to find time to go out to eat with one another. She got a burger with fries for 19$, I got 6 wings for 11$. The wings were dry and were absolutely caked in black pepper. Her burger was over cooked and thrown together in a panic. The food was okay and I don't hate the atmosphere (The bubbles outside are creepy and dystopian, and inside could benefit from a live band), but I get a weird feeling like I'm part of an occupying force when I eat here. I travel a lot and I've never been to a place in America where there is such an obvious divide between visitors/new to town and the actual locals, and around the Top Hat in particular the locals are shockingly hostile and aggressive. There's a weird us-against-them vibes that just walking into the place immediately generates and the locals seem RESTLESS. Decent food but dodgy vibes. It's not every day that all four people at a table express disappointment in the food. This would have been expressed to waitstaff - IF she would have stopped back to the table. Sorry to say, it was not "love at first bite." I ordered the vegetarian curry pineapple dish, with extra veggies as I was skipping the reported not so firm tofu. A pile of rice, a decent LOOKing curry sauce, a few Dole pineapple chunks, and three overcooked quarter-sized broccoli flowerettes (which one was extra?). I couldn't taste any of it. What? The spice level was so high, that any flavor this dish may have had was covered up. I waited a few minutes to ask the waitress for a less spicy dollup, but, nope. No check-ins. I guess placing water on the table means you don't need to head back for refills. The other dishes at the table included a pork dish (too spicy), poke (overly salty), and lettuce wraps. Side of Brussel sprouts came with not shaved almond slivers, but whole almonds. Hmmm. Grapefruit jalapeño margaritas were somewhat tasteless. Kumbucha was 5.50 for small glass - and satisfactory. Ambiance was good. (This was the staging vicinity for shuttles out to a Kettle House concert. Did quality of food take a dip due to concert night crowd? We had the Chimichurri Fried Chicken Sandwich with house-made tator tots on happy hour (3-6pm) and the Sirloin French Dip with Szechuan Beef & Broccoli Soup. We also got the Kettlehouse Fish On (local brew) and another beer with pina colada notes (all drafts on happy hour). We were hungry but regardless the food and the brews were delicious. Probably one of the best fried chicken sandwiches we've had. We sat outside where there was plenty of space and it's on Front Street which is a very fun street to window shop down. Cool little place. On I quick overnight trip to Missoula. I went for a long run/hike, after I wanted to enjoy some greasy food and beer somewhere outside on this beautiful day. There is a surprising lack of outside seating at bars in town. Or at least on a Monday and in the areas I covered. I stopped here only because of their outside tables, they were full but I was hoping to wait out the outdoor occupiers at the bar (never happened). I sat down at the bar and was served by a lovely and informative bartender. She suggested a couple beers I'd never heard of. I ordered the Nashville chicken bites appetizer. They were much spicier than I'd anticipated, I really enjoyed them. Little chicken bites covered in flavorful hot sauce and topped with delicious homemade pickle slices, great little app for the table or dinner for one. They have a very reasonable happy hour, I didn't realize until after I'd ordered and I just happened to order things on it. Great experience, I'll definitely be back if I find myself in Missoula again, and I really hope I do. read more

We were able to take advantage of the happy hour deals, and I got a huge chimichurri fried chicken sandwich with tots for ten bucks! Can we stop for a second and bow down to these tots?
