I enjoyed my tacos from Torchy's but found them, and the experience, kind of average. We ordered in advance and were told it would be about 10 minutes, but it actually ended up being 25 minutes. The restaurant had a fun atmosphere and some outdoor seating so the wait wasn't too much of an inconvenience. I got a few vegetarian friendly tacos. They were super squished up which made them pretty messy to eat. I enjoyed the flavors overall but thought they were a little too spicy which overwhelmed the actual flavors, but I am pretty sensitive to spiciness. The chips were yummy but again the queso was a little too spicy for me. You do get a LOT of chips and plenty of dip in one order which was cool. read more

On a visit to Austin, I'm SO glad we tried Torchy's. Tacos are delicious and the menu has a wide variety to choose from. My personal favorite was the fried chicken taco, with the bacon, egg & cheese being a close 2nd. Tex mex is a must try while in Texas? I'm from San Diego so I've had many tacos. Tex mex is definitely different! I couldn't decide which taco to get so I got the shrimp since it seemed popular. With it being my first visit to Austin, I had to make it a point to stop into Torchy's and give it a try for myself.. especially after hearing the hype. And I'm happy we did. Being in the heart of downtown I thought we were walking into a hotel restaurant/bar but come to find out, there was a tex mex gem behind those doors. And damn good tex mex at that. Very open and spacious space with multiple seating areas from high tops, booths, tables, and/or bar seating. Did I mention they have a full bar? And a beautiful one at that. Food: Inexpensive! With an easy ordering concept and walk up station. Personally, the 'trailer park' taco was by far the greatest item on the menu. The chicken was perfectly fried with this delicious poblano sauce on the side. I could order that every visit and be happy. The Democrat with barbacoa also did no wrong. With a side of queso and it's a party. My one hiccup was with the staff member taking my order. The OG of Torchy's was a must visit while in Austin. Since this is the flagship location it didn't have a full bar or the same vibe as some of the others I've visited but it was cool to check out. You must start out with the hillbilly queso! It's got the perfect combination of flavor and texture paired with the thin tortilla chips adding just the right consistency of goodness. I usually add the chorizo and it's soooo delicious and addictive. It may spoil your appetite before you get your tacos so don't go too crazy. I always order the democrat which has juicy barbacoa, avocado, and cojito cheese wrapped in a corn tortilla. My next favorite is the green chili pork (the name says it all) and enjoy on a flour tortilla. Tastes like moms homemade pork green chili minus needing a spoon. Lastly, if you download the Torchy's app you will unlock secret tacos which are out of this world! I like to enjoy a Torchy's margarita with my tacos and since this location doesn't have the full bar that was my only complaint. read more

A staple to try when you're in town. When I was planning my trip to Austin multiple friends told me to check out Torchy's so this was one of my first stops on the trip. Torchy's is a popular chain so you'll see various ones across the different areas in town. I ended up going to the one on South Congress as well but this location is super close to downtown if you're exploring the area. With a smaller outside seating area, bar seating, and tables inside this place is good for larger groups. I ended up trying: + Queso with chorizo - By far my fave thing we ordered! The portion was great to share with a group of 4. The chips were thin and crispy (think a little like taco bell chips but better) and the cheese was flavorful with the added chunks of chorizo. + The Democrat (barbacoa) - This one was alright in my book. The barbacoa here is a little different than what I was expecting although it was the flavorful. Much like their other options this portion was huge on the flour tortillas. The avocado on top added a nice flavor contrast to the spiciness of the meat. + Classic with bacon, egg, and cheese - Can't go wrong with this one for breakfast! Nothing too special but it was tasty. + Alabama Shake (fried catfish) - This one was one of my other faves! This was a new item so we def had to try this one. The coating was not too thick and the piece of fish was HUGE. The slaw added a nice flavor contrast. ***Add that diablo sauce and you're set. I like that they give you the option to put your taco on a flour or corn tortilla as well. For bang for your buck this is a great place to go. This place was on the 50 things to eat on Spoon university. As soon as we landed from California, we headed to Torchy's for some tacos. We ordered the wrangler and two other tacos which I can't remember the name along with the chips con queso. The tacos were perfect in size stuffed with egg and brisket. They were so good. The queso had a bit of spicy kick to it which made it more addicting to eat. The chips were fried to perfection not soggy of oil just perfect. They had outside seating as well as indoor seating available. Restrooms were also available inside. Customer Service was good. Parking is available along the street. Don't expect street tacos from Torchy's! They are absolutely not made to be "authentic" by any means. The tacos were quite pricey, but they were huge! 2 was way more than enough for me. I enjoyed the Ranch Hand, but could've passed on the breakfast one. That's a personal preference though since I don't like eggs, but if you do, I can see this being an amazing taco! I got a make your own taco what I put in it was beef cheese and avocado. It was nasty they gave me beef strips cheese and a slice of avocado! It was so chewy, I am serious it took me 5 minutes to finish my first bite! The service was okay. I asked the lady what the closest thing was to a beef taco with avocado on it and she made that. God this place is good. I don't care what anyone says. This place inside is so Austin-coded and has different rooms to house many guests. The bar is large and has wide seating. The layout is intuitive and the wait staff is always competent and on task. To the waiters to the hostess the people know their duty and get it done. The cooks inside the kitchen may have loud music if you sit near the bathroom/ kitchen entrance but by god the food never misses. I have gone at least 7 times and it never fails me. I got the Trailer Park (fried chicken) trashy style and Crossroads (brisket) tacos. The trailer park really blew me away with how flavorful and non-greasy it was. My friend got the Republican (jalapeño sausage) and also raved about it. The brisket one was just okay. We were curious about the price but the tacos actually ended up being decent sized portions. Our first stop after arriving in Austin! This location is only indoors, with two to three tables outside, and they have a bar so happy hour is a go here! Our cashier was really nice and patient and gave us a couple of recommendations. After thinking, I ultimately decided to get the Democrat and the Dirty Sanchez. I LOVED the dirty sanchez. It is vegetarian and a breakfast tacos but the green chiles were so flavorful and it tasted even better with the Torchy hot sauce! The democrat was average--there wasn't much flavor and I really ordered it for the avocado. Even after adding some hot sauce, it still didn't compare to the Dirty Sanchez. Overall, pretty good meal for $10. Two tacos are definitely enough to make you full, with a Topo Chico on the side! I personally love extra limes and took some from the limes by the fountain drinks for that extra zing! Also, there is a secret menu that we found out about AFTER we ordered (disappointing!). The server at the bar mentioned it to two ladies and were were definitely straining our ears to hear the different options. We had 4 tacos, I like the democrat and the Baja shrimp, the republican is a bit too wet and hard to hold, but the sausage is absolutely delicious, the Baja shrimp and the fried chicken in the trailer one are crispy outside and chewy inside. Torchy's is not just an Austin staple, but the San Antonio area as well. When I lived in Texas, a Torchy's stop was a must in San Marcos on a road trip between the two larger citites. This location does the franchise much justice with a contemporary storefront and lightning-quick service. If you're not devouring your taco and ordering more in a matter of minutes, you might be doing something wrong. I suggest ordering more queso, personally.... In all seriousness, I adore this corner location. It's spacious without feeling impersonal, warm with splashes of red accents. As with most Torchy locations, servers will give you a sensor to put on your table which helps them send your order as soon as it's ready. Everyone near us, whether a party of four or a few more, was served within a matter of minutes. Every single time we visit, we indulge a bit in the queso. The serving is decadent and generous enough that it warrants a second complimentary basket of chips. My personal favorite orders include the green chile pork, the Brushfire (a Jamaican jerk chicken), the Democrat (resplendent in barbacoa), and the Crossroads (smoked brisket) tacos. In fact, I'm drooling just a bit thinking about them...yum. Please remember that this is a Tex-Mex establishment, so they don't market for authenticity by any means. It is impossible for me to discuss anything relating to the culinary state of Texas without mentioning Torchy's. They have, I swear to you, some of the best queso in the state, and their tacos are at the very least competitive with what you'll find elsewhere. I'm hesitant to review chains, but for Torchy's I'll make an exception. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Great location, great decor, and enough staffing to keep the place humming even when things get busy. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Torchy's sits on the slightly more expensive side of the pricing fence for what are really medium sized tacos, and this accounts for what are some rock solid ingredients and combinations, so I wasn't, for example, at all upset about forking over $4.80 for a Baja Shrimp taco. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? It's good. It's all very very good. The fillings are where Torchy's really comes through, with fresh meats or shrimps of what have you and peripherals that bring their signature tacos together in a way that's hard to find elsewhere. My only gripe is that Torchy's is often weak when it comes to their tortillas and things can at times get a bit dried out as was the case with my Baja Shrimp and Steak tacos this go round.
