Every booth, table etc has seen a lot of patrons and as a result shows some character. The food was outstanding! We went to Tornado House to celebrate our family members college graduation. We had a party of 12 so we weren't able to get a reservation until 9pm. Although it was late we were able to check in and have a drink at the neighboring bar and they called us when our table was ready, which was before 9! The restaurant was packed for 9pm. The service was wonderful! We had a birthday in the group and the birthday person was treated to cheesecake following dinner. All of the food was delicious. With the steak you were able to pick soup or salad and a side. The salad was very large and you were able to get French onion soup, very delicious and you can't go wrong! The hash brown was the recommended side and was very large and delicious. Most people's steak was cooked perfectly but two people's were cooked either way too much or not enough, which is why I rated it a 4 stars. We did not make a comment to the server otherwise I am sure they would have greatly fix it. It was a little dark for eating as my mother in law needed a lash light. I ate here for dinner at the recommendation of a work colleague. I arrived to the restaurant with reservations. I was seated after a brief wait. I stated with a Spotted Cow IPA while reviewing the menu. The menu had many steaks to choose from but I chose the house special which was the 20 oz. bone-in tenderloin. I ordered that with the hash browns and spinach salad with bacon and balsamic. The spinach salad was great as the bacon took it to the next level! I was disappointed when I saw many entrée plate as both the steak and hash browns appeared to be burned. I ordered the steak medium and the hash browns extra crispy. I cut into the steak and it was cooked medium well on the inside and was charred on the outside. The bone was a significant portion of the 20 oz. as I ate the steak with no problem. Unfortunately, my hash browns were burned throughout. The service was good here and the restaurant had a nice ambiance but I was stumped when I was told this was the best steak that Madison had to offer. The food price and the food quality earned this place a 2.5 star rating. read more

This is Madison's go-to supper club. It isn't my style because the inside is very dark and cramped. If you need a little more space to dine then this isn't for you. We only had escargot that was brought out to us before the bread. The garlic butter was great for dipping bread in, once it arrived. I have been there for dinner on a week day. I went without reservation, but was able to get a seat in the bar. The first thing kept on my table was a complimentary set of veggies, which was an innovative thing to do. The complimentary bread was warm and nice as well. For my entree I went with Filet au poivre. It was a nice thick steak. It was very tender. Some extra flavor would have been better though. Hash brown side was good as well. The french onion soup was super flavorful and cheesy. We (6 people) were seated at a dimly lit, half booth/ half table and both the chairs and booth seating was badly ripped up, which could have snagged my silk attire, so we had to trade out some chairs. Our food and cocktails were great! We started with the Oysters and Escargot, they were out of the Sea Scallops ;) and the Salmon...we ordered various cuts of the steaks, which they were good, but very heavy peppercorn crust on the Filets. The Cognac cream sauce had capers in it, that we didn't care for and it was cold. I am a California wine drinker and there aren't any CA wines on their wine list by the glass!!! I was the only one who wanted an oak barreled Chardonnay and they don't even have one, very disappointing. Their list is french wines, and no one knowledgeable on describing the flavor of any of the bottles on the list...as we did ask and they were pleasant but no help! When we got home and looked over our receipt, we were charged for a glass of Malbec wine that we did not have. Had to update my review after we visited recently. We sat at the bar this time and that's why I'm adding a star. The bartenders were friendly and on top of things. The bar area is cool and laid-back. Very comfortable seating and everyone was having a good time and relaxed. My husband and I both ordered drinks, which were expertly made. Let me first preference this and say that I don't live in Madison and I only come to Madison a couple times a year for work. But every time I come to Madison I eat here. So the first time I went to this steak house I thought I was walking into some 1970's mobster establishment and someone named Little Franky is going to take me out to the back. Once you get over the fear of getting whacked, you can enjoy the food. Their wines and meat selection are great. I go to steak houses throughout the US and the Tornado Room is within my top 5 steak houses. I now only order the the 14oz filet, and I get it rare as can be. The filet is prepared well and the cut is great. People I go with talk about the sides being great, but all I eat is this amazing steak. Also the pricing is not bad at all. This 14oz filet is like $50 and in other large cities this would be double or triple that. This filet is so good, I would not hesitate paying $150+ for it. Unique in that it wasn't chocked full of cream but still had chunks of crab, egg, and veggies. The duck will never get old. It's a really nice portion. And really the only time I enjoy a protein without other sides with it. The way they do seating sucks for walk-ins though. I tried 3 different times to make a reservation. Really loved my experience here for valentines day in 2023. 2024 was more mixed. No anchovies on Caesar which was disappointing. Prefer the the ribeye to the house cut bone in fillet (?). Thats just on me, cook on the steak was good. Bread and butter were excellent and piping hot. Shrimp cocktail was good, shrimp were a little tough. Didn't love the duck. Sauce running across the plate looked like the duck was bleeding out its juices. Lobster tail was okay. I think the company that owns tornado and tempest do really good work. I feel now really certain now that if you want seafood, just get it at tempest since they always nail. And stick to red meat at tornado. read more
