We went for brunch, to celebrate a birthday. It was a beautiful day so opted to sit outside on the patio. It's a pretty little space with lots of plants and other greenery. We had a party of 10, so the service team was definitely busy with our group. And I noticed at one point that our waiter was also bartending and making all of the cocktails. It made for slightly slower service, but we weren't in any kind of a rush, so it wasn't really an issue. We started with chips and salsa, which had 3 different salsas and freshly fried corn tortillas, as well as an order of guacamole. The guac came with a beautiful presentation, bordered with thinly sliced radishes and topped with sliced rainbow carrots. It had a nice kick to it and a great slightly chunky texture. I ordered the breakfast enchiladas, and was very happy with my selection. Chicken, poblano pumpkin mole, queso fresco, crema, onions, cilantro, topped with 2 eggs. Huge portions--I ended up taking more than half home. There were some misses with timing as far as the food service but I almost expect that when you have a larger party. One of our people didn't get his food for quite some time; but they did bring us an extra cocktail as an apology. My husband and I tried this place for the first time last night and it was FANTASTIC!!! We are both big foodies and honestly are fairly picky when it comes to nicer restaurants. As far as food in Reno goes, this is now the top of our list and will be our recommendation to any friends looking to come eat downtown. All the fish selections were high quality and very fresh, the food was all cooked perfectly and the seasonings were layered just right to be flavorful and deep with a hint of heat. We ordered many dishes to try as much as we could and here's what we thought of each: Papas bravas - may be our favorite and a MUST to try Ceviche mixto- super fresh and delicious Blue corn bread - I loved it but might skip it next time to get another meat dish Bone marrow - husband liked it well enough, would probably try something new though next time Cilantro creamy rice - super delicious and will always be getting this Wagyu with shrimp (the special) - cooked and spiced well but husband wasn't a huge fan of the red sauce. Short ribs with flour tortillas - so tender and made fantastic tacos Churro cake - A MUST TRY!!!! Ah, Toro Bravo. I expected fireworks, culinary pyrotechnics that would leave my palate singing. Instead, I got a sparkler in the rain. Let's start with the ambiance, which was genuinely lovely. Dark, moody, and romantic, perfect for whispering sweet nothings or quietly regretting your menu choices. Sadly, the food didn't live up to the sultry setting. The carne asada tacos? More like carne a-SAD-a... Overcooked to the point of shoe leather, they lacked the flavor and finesse one would expect from a place so highly praised. The Omelette Mexicano was a generous portion and had some seasoning personality, but still felt like it had wandered in from a different, slightly more competent kitchen. Let's not forget the $3.95 Pepsi (was it vintage? Infused with truffle essence?) and the utterly charming credit card surcharge, a little surprise slap at the end of the meal. Parking? Bring a Sherpa and a strong sense of humor. In the end, Toro Bravas serves up big-city prices with small-town inconsistency. Tried out Toro Bravo and it did not disappoint! We sampled a variety of their meats, a few appetizers, and a couple of desserts. The appetizers were a strong start -- the standout for me was definitely the focaccia bread, warm and flavorful. The entrées were delicious across the board, and I loved that each protein is served with tortillas so you can build your own tacos -- such a fun touch. Of everything we tried, the flank steak and the octopus were my absolute favorites: perfectly cooked, tender, and packed with flavor. We added on a couple of sides as well, though those were just okay compared to the rest of the meal. For dessert, we split the churro cake and the chocolate cake. The churro cake was incredible -- sweet, moist, and full of flavor. The chocolate cake, while still tasty, leaned a little dry for my liking. Service was excellent, especially for a Tuesday night, and overall the experience was wonderful. I'd 100% come back for the steak alone, but the whole menu has a lot worth revisiting. read more

Loved this Mexican steakhouse and its creative flavors. They start you off with some tostadas and salsa, which are both good but I prefer regular tortilla chips. Server recommended the blue corn bread as an app which was amazing and the shrimp tamale was the star of the show. Such a fun take on a traditional tamale I would come back just for this. My wife and I made reservations and visited Toro Bravo on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was clean and welcoming, with Simon greeting us at the door. The restaurant displays lovely woodwork that span across the ceiling and complements the warm ambiance. We first visited the bar for some happy-hour cocktails and were very pleased with their El Chapo Lo-era prickly pear margarita. Our server, Jesus, offered some suggestions for appetizers, and we started with the seafood-stuffed avocado salad. For dinner, there were several delicious options, so my wife requested the Halibut special while I ordered the Prime Skirt Steak with a side of Sweet Potato Gratin. Our meals arrived in about twenty minutes, and they were worth every second. The halibut was perfect and paired well with the sides, while the skirt steak was complemented perfectly by the gratin. We knew dessert was going to feature something irresistible, so we saved our leftovers and dived into the hot apple pie with vanilla ice cream. I'll give them a little grace since they're just opening. Came here for dinner with my mother-in-law and sisters-in-laws. My husband had called ahead to make reservations, but when we got there, they couldn't find them. They ended up seating us in the bar area, which honestly wasn't too bad. I'd been looking forward to checking out Toro Bravo, especially after hearing it took over the Smith and River space and teamed up with La Condesa, a personal favorite. You really can't beat the location, right downtown where Virginia Street meets the Truckee River. The patio is going to be a hot spot all summer long. The space is beautifully designed - modern, cozy, and welcoming, with warm lighting and a relaxed yet polished feel. Our server wasn't very familiar with the menu, and they were out of several drinks we tried to order, so we stuck with water. A little disappointing, but we were excited for the food. We started with appetizers: ceviche de pescado, ceviche mixto, and papas bravas, and they were all excellent. The fish ceviche was bright and citrusy with a perfect balance of tang and spice. The mixed ceviche added even more depth with shrimp and calamari, and the papas bravas were addictively crispy with a smoky, spicy aioli that we couldn't stop dipping into. For entrées, I had the Tamal de Camarón and absolutely loved it. The shrimp was perfectly cooked, wrapped in a soft, flavorful tamal with a rich sauce that pulled it all together. Others at the table ordered the Tostada de Arrachera Prime, oven-roasted Mary's chicken, and sides like the Caesar salad and creamy cilantro rice. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated. Not a single dish disappointed. We asked for a dessert menu and were told they had berry cheesecake, pistachio cake, and some ice cream options. We ordered the berry cheesecake with caramel ice cream, but instead received a matcha cheesecake by mistake. When we mentioned it to another server, he explained they actually only had a Basque cheesecake with berry sauce and the matcha one. We went ahead and ordered the Basque, and it was absolutely delicious. Creamy, not too sweet, and a perfect finish to the meal. They kindly gave us the matcha cheesecake on the house, and to our surprise, everyone at the table really enjoyed that too. Honestly, despite a few hiccups, the food and setting won us over. I love La Condesa. So when I heard Chef Sergio opened Toro Bravo I knew I had to go. Great downtown location right on the Truckee River and Virginia Street. The patio will be hopping all summer. But for this chilly March night the friends chose the back dining room. With seven of us we decided to smorgasbord the menu. Here's our picks- Blue corn bread served piping hot in a mini cast iron skillet was fabulous. Could also double as a dessert. Tamal de camaron was perfection, the sweet corn polenta and creamy garlic sauce topped with large shrimp could be an entree for the light eaters. Sope de barbacoa de res was another perfect appetizer of rich beef carbacoa on a corn cake with tomatillo salsa, and queso. Papas bravas, cubed potatoes drizzled with a smoked jalapeño aioli and Parmesan cheese Empanadas de mariscos, three large pastries stuffed with seafood, salsa and crème. Arroz de mariscos al horno, a hearty dish of octopus, prawns, fish, clams, black garlic aioli, English peas and carrots. Niman lamb shank braised in guajillo chili that literally fell off the bone. Creamy cilantro rice that I would order as a side every visit. Just loved the fluffy rice, light cilantro and pieces of cheese. Frijoles charros a Mexican cowboy bean stew with pork belly and Spanish chorizo. A fabulously hearty dish. Charred Brussels sprouts were just the right crispy with a wonderful balsamic reduction. Ending with a slice of macha cheesecake. Most of the cocktails are tequila based, I wouldn't expect anything less from a Mexican steakhouse. My Maria Bonita was a great sipper with the dinner. Went to Toro Bravo before &Juliet. Mocktails are delicious and innovative. The mocktails are curated, not just "we can make any cocktail a mocktail" (which mocktail imbibers know that is not what we are looking for). The mocktails have thoughtful seasonal ingredients like butterfly pea powder or tajin and watermelon and are both beautiful and delicious. We have eaten at Toro Bravo multiple times and have yet to try appetizer, ceviche, main dish, side or dessert we didn't find delicious. The heavier dishes like Caesar salad or short ribs have a delicious note of acid in them. The food is very well balanced with thoughtful accompaniments such as pickled onions or wafer thin carrot slices that enhance the dish, even the freshness of micro-greens with dessert. The service is excellent as well and well staffed. Each table is positioned so you don't feel like you are dining with another table. If you remember previous restaurants at this locationp that were noisy, somehow this is different. The noise level is compatible for conversations with dinner, a nice plus. We've been excited about coming to Toro Bravo, and finally were able to drop in for dinner on a Wednesday night. We didn't have reservations, but they were able to get us in as we were there pretty early around 5 o'clock. The menu is very interesting and so unique... and there are many different choices that we've never seen before. It's a bit pricey, but so worth it! My hubby and I chose to do a sharing of a variety of plates to try different things. We ordered the polenta shrimp, the seafood empanadas, the creamy rice and the skirt steak tostada. Refer to the menu for their menu names. We loved all of them as the flavors were incredible. Each dish had its own unique characteristics of prep, flavorful ingredients, and beautiful presentation. All delicious! It was plenty of food for the two of us and it was a fun way to try different dishes. The kind service and the dining room atmosphere was great. Casual, beautiful and relaxing. We ate inside and maybe next time we'll try the patio when it's not so windy. We will definitely return and try more on the menu! Though my favorite was the shrimp and polenta! The skirt steak and churro cake were the stars of the show, but everything was good. My only complaint was that the chicken needed more salt, I think. One of the worst dining experiences we've had -- would never return. I don't know how this place rated a 4.7. I am thinking people do not have taste buds or have never had good food before. I would give it zero stars but I am forced to pick one star. We came in for my husband's birthday, excited to try something new, but the night was a total disappointment. Despite being one of only two tables in the whole restaurant, we waited forever just to get a drink. Refills? Only if we asked -- and even then, the water wasn't brought until much later. We ordered an appetizer that was supposed to come with flour tortillas -- none came. When we asked, we were given greasy corn tortillas instead. The server claimed they were a blend, but they clearly weren't. On top of that, we didn't even get plates for the appetizer until we asked again. The entrées were just as bad. The steak was ordered medium well and came out red and undercooked. The birria was swimming in oil -- completely inedible. After nearly two hours of waiting, we were served food we couldn't even enjoy. The service was inattentive and slow, and the food was honestly worse than fast food. We left feeling frustrated, disappointed, and like we wasted a special occasion. We won't be back read more

Mark my words this will be the number one restaurant in Reno this year. Yes it's pricey and you can easily share any of the healthy, delicious, beautifully presented main entries. The Octopus was tender, super flavorful and probably my fave entree. You must try a ceviche too. Mouthwatering experiences await as your melt into each taste with homemade tortillas.
