Excellent place with very good service. We went on a Wednesday night and the place, while sparsely occupied when we arrived (5:45) was bustling with people waiting when we left. We split taquetos which were very good. Wife had an empanada as her main but thought it mediocre. I had the corn encrusted chiles rellenos; outstanding. We had so-so margaritas which were very overpriced for the quantity and quality. I would not order margaritas again here. The service was very good and it was nice to see the manager checking on us as well. We will definitely return to try other things on the menu. read more

terrible experience.....first ones in the door at opening, had a reservation and we're seated at the kitchen entrance, very unappealing. obviously about 40 other places we could have been placed. Extremely inattentive waitress. At least 20 employees appear busily hurrying past but none appear to be doing anything. Appetizer of incredibly overpriced and bland guacamole served AFTER entrees arrived, only after we asked. Burrito very weird flavoring and jackfruit "added protein" inedible. Chicken in fajitas tasted steamed. Server didn't notice entree hardly touched. Took forever for check to arrive and then to be picked up and then to be returned. Every other Mexican restaurant in the area is better than this at half the price. Will not be back. read more

Wow. This place is a must visit. It has been on my list to visit for awhile but I have hesitated due to the pandemic. We went at an off time and found it to fortunately not be too crowded. We sat on the patio and they have heaters. It was kind of odd to sit at a couch to eat dinner but I appreciated the ambiance. I love the decor and vibe of this place. Vibrant colors and tasteful art work. They give you a generous serving of chips and salsa. I ordered the chicken enchiladas. Large portion accompanied with black beans and rice. The rice was a bit better if you added some salsa to it. The enchiladas had a delicious green sauce on them. We also ordered the fried potatoes and the chipotle sauce was perfect on them. With my large serving, I didn't need the potatoes. The drinks tasted really great, the sangria had a great flavor and I could taste cinnamon. The only improvement is that the drinks seemed weak. I didn't feel like I even had a drink after the sangria. Still tasty though. Can't wait to come back and try the dessert tortillas or chocolate piñata. read more

Los Angeles vibe but the food is meh and expensive. $19 for 5 chicken wings, they put pineapple in the gauc (WHY?) tacos were nothing to brag about better tacos at any other place. This past Saturday was our 5th or 6th trip to Toro. The food and service had always been superb. The waitress took our drink and appetizer order and the apps arrived within a minute or so, leading us to believe everything was already prepped and reheated. Our drinks did not arrive until our apps were finished. When our entrees arrived, the waitress appeared and asked how our entrees were. How would we know that? They just arrived! We never saw our waitress again and had to flag someone down for water refills and a clean napkin. Considering the place was maybe half full, there is no excuse for such awful service. Additionally, the music was unbearably loud, so conversation was impossible. We had recommended Toro to some friends and they said basically the same thing. The waitress was awful and the music was absurdly loud. As much as we loved Toro, I doubt we will be returning anytime soon. read more

Stopped here my last night before leaving Albany and I do not regret it. We were sat at the bar because the tables were full but it was a full service menu so everything was fine. The bartender was amazing (name starts with an "S" but I'm blanking ). Drinks were amazing (strong how I like them) and the food was good. The atmosphere is lively but not obnoxious and everyone was compliant with COVID rules. Everyone was friendly, including other patrons, so it's a nice place to go if you like to have a drink or two at the bar alone. Zero complaints! read more

Anxious to get out of the house, the 4 of us ventured into the newly opened Toro Cantina. What a beautiful place! Bright, spacious, and modern. Not the typical Mexican/American decor I'm familiar with. Every staff member was masked and it was obvious that social distancing was observed. We were immediately led to the patio. From the extensive and enticing menu we started with the "Classic" guacamole. There are 3 to choose from, but my suggestion to try the "Sweet & Spicy" or "Smoky" fell on deaf ears. No worry, because the Classic was excellent! Fresh and chunky. That was the highlight for me. Being a warm and humid evening on the patio, the Watermelon and Shrimp Gazpacho sounded like the perfect appetizer. Watermelon and shrimp with cucumber, onion, mint, cilantro, agave, lime, olive oil, and Mexican crema would seem to fill your mouth with the taste of summer and a hint of South-of-the-Border bold. Where was the spice? It was overly sweet with no firey balance. I added some of the salsa provided with the nachos , but no help. This could have been an outstanding dish but fell flat. Since I am not Mexican and have experienced only what the northern U.S. has to offer in the way of Mexican fare, I have to rely on my taste buds regarding only taste, not authenticity. That being said, the Braised Pork Carnitas Tacos I chose were lacking in both spice and flavor. The waiter was explicit in stating that the pork was cooked in its own fat for flavor, but that only added oil, not flavor. And, the pork itself was surprisingly dry. I initially wanted to try 2 different tacos since there's 2 per order, but that is not an option. I was told to order 2 more of another type because he said they were small, and it looked like "I could handle 4" (?!). I stuck with the 2. My male friend ordered the Lamb Barbacoa Tacos and he said his was also dry. We both opted to add black beans and rice for an additional $5.00. Keeping with the theme, the beans were mixed with, I believe, refried beans which gave them a pasty, dry consistency. My wife and friend's wife both had the Chop Taco Salad and loved it. It was served in a huge edible shell and neither could finish it. Curiously, it states it has iceberg lettuce but came with romaine. But, as I said, they both loved it. No Mexican brewed coffee available, which was a disappointment. Overall, not the best foot forward as far as I was concerned. We will be back when we can have a complete experience of food and drink. The ambiance is very bright, colorful and warming. I enjoyed my lunch. The salsa was not my favorite. It's blended too much. The sweet plantains were delicious. The burrito with the side salad very good. I really enjoyed the watermelon radish that was added to the salad. The burrito was very filling. I ate half for lunch and the other half for dinner. I tried the Toro Rum Punch, it was tasty and smooth. The staff were very friendly. I would definitely return. read more

We wanted to visit the restaurant but Covid-19 had other plans. We were able to try the Take Out menu, however, and it did not disappoint! My husband and I split the Surf and Turf Giant Burrito. He had 2/3 and I 1/3. It was really plenty of food for the two of us and very delicious! The steak was flavorful and tender and the shrimp was a nice size and not chewy. The homemade chips have just the right amount of salt and the salsa is exceptional. We are already big fans and will order again soon. At first I was stymied by the fact that they only sell taco trays for take-out, but I was glad I persisted because the taco tray option was excellent. The chips were just right, the salsas were delicious. They even have 50% corn/50% flour tortillas. They really know what they're doing. Nice decor, good service and tasty food! The chips and salsa are delicious and they give you a giant tray of it. They do a variety of guacamole. The trick is to mix the guac with the different salsas they provide. Trust me, it makes a huge difference. I wasn't a fan of the sweet potato one but the traditional and the pineapple versions were good. I think it needed some salt to enhance the flavors a bit. For the main course, I always get the surf and turf burrito, which is ginormous and can easily feed 3 people. I usually pack it to go and eat leftovers over two meals. They put about 5 large shrimp and a generous portion of steak in the burrito. I was a little disappointed that they forgot to put steak in my burrito the last time i dined in. They had also added too much beans which resulted in me eating a black bean burrito with a little shrimp and rice. I alerted the staff who then started to take my burrito away but i didn't want to waste food so i just asked the kitchen staff to cook me a side of steak. Not ideal, but I'm thinking they were just having an off day. The dessert is where they miss the mark. They have an impressive display of churros in a little "cart" with different dipping sauces. But the texture of it is not quite right. A little too hard and too much sugar. I've also tried the tres leches but the cake is also too... cakey? Again, points for presentation but the cake itself is way too dense and not enough leche. read more

After arriving on time for our reservation we still stood around for 15 mins till they could seat us. The main course was awful. The chimichanga I had was overcooked and had no sauce or sour cream or anything. Dessert was good as you can't go wrong with churros but that was about it. Everything was overpriced as well. This is the second time that we have been to toro and the food is good but each time, the service has been just ok. They need to clear glasses that are empty and plates that have been used. For what you are paying and for the number of bus people they have, they should be trained to take plates that are empty and refill water glasses. The cocktails are delicious and the servers are really nice but they need to take more time to pay attention and ask about more cocktails and again clear off the table. The food is good but a bit hit or miss. Again, for the prices, the service should be a ton better. It just seems that the waitstaff is undertrained. read more

Why, exactly, do restaurants ask you to make reservations ... and then sit you at the single worst spot in the entire restaurant ... when there are empty tables all around ... only to have you hear other people come in without reservations and not get a crappy spot????? At this point, I won't bother to volunteer to get snubbed again. Anyway .... Service was excellent. Chips came with cold, glumpy salsa. La reina margarita wasn't worth the price. Enchiladas we're beautifully presented ... but came with a really funky sweet sauce that was just plain bad. (I tested individual components and it seemed to be the dark green perhaps tomatillo sauce that was off - like Jolly Ranchers off.). Beans were delicious, but cold. Rice tasted off. Food and service were underwhelming for the price. I ordered a margarita and a burrito and paid just under $40. The burrito was basically a Chipotle burrito and the margarita wasn't notable. No chips or anything included. They have a cell phone based menu, ordering and payment system and don't even have waiters/waitresses checking on customers. Spectacularly awful! Our food was so bad, that my wife and I were laughing in disbelief in the parking lot. Look, E for effort. After getting past the hostesses the service was quite good (which is why 2 stars and not 1). Though, our waitress seemed a bit disappointed that I was not at all impressed with her assertion that they "hand-make" their guacamole (am I to believe that is something of an exception in New York? Because, really, it is quite common place elsewhere in the world). No matter, It had been a while since I've had chile rellenos, and their goat cheese rellenos sounded absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the fish tacos. We were both really excited. So, what is the first sign that an "authentic" Mexican food restaurant is not, in fact, authentic? Rest assured, if they bring you tacos in a flour tortilla, you're in for a very inauthentic experience. In fact you may as well just pack it up and head for Chipotle, which is both cheaper and, in this case, actually better. However, neither my wife or I were at all prepared for the deep-fried-battered-fish-in-a-flour-tortilla level of inauthenticity. I wasn't brave enough to taste it, but much as I suspected, my wife said it was truly terrible. Likewise, my chile rellenos, while the presentation was impeccable, the result was a barely warm, cardiac-arrest inducing, failure. Imagine thinking that it's a good idea to eat two entire 8oz. packages of goat cheese for dinner. Again, E for effort because goat cheese isn't exactly cheap, but that doesn't mean I want to eat two packages in one sitting. My rellenos were accompanied by rice and refried beans that, unfortunately, were not, "hand-made." They were, in fact, clearly rice from a box and beans from a can. And look, I wouldn't do any business the diservice of characterizing their food as disgusting if it were not absolutely and unquestionably true, but the rice and beans were absolutely and unquestionably disgusting. In summary, Toro advertises their food as, "Authentic, bold, spirited." Authentic? 100% untrue. Bold? Only in their blatant contempt for a discerning palate. Spirited? Please. read more
